Herbie Mann — Standing Ovation At Newport ... CD
1966. New Copy .... Around June 26, 2013
Herbie got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! The album's one of the few to feature Mann in the company of pianist Chick Corea – who steps out here with some hard, soulful, Latin-inflected energy that's totally great – and which really makes the group cook. Other players include Dave Pike on vibes and Patato Valdes on congas – and the great Ben Tucker joins the group on an extremely popular 10 minute version of his composition "Comin Home Baby", one of Herbie's all-time hits. Other tracks are equally long and jazzy – and titles include "Mushi Mushi" and "Patato".

Heaven & Earth — Refuge (with bonus tracks) (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Ovation/Lion, 1973. New Copy Gatefold .... $13.99
A beautiful early 70s psych folk set from the angelic vocal and songwriting duo of Pat Gefell and Jo D Andrews – their Refuge album for Ovation in 1973 – highlighted by their gorgeous vocals, but committed with lovely, lightly soaring arrangements! Save for a solid cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin penned "Sixty Years On", Gefell and Andrews wrote the songs here, and it's remarkably strong stuff! The duo vocals and harmonies are especially sweet. The Chicago-based production wisely leaves ample space in the arrangements for them to sort of loosely, emotively embellish with their voices – with string arrangements by co-producer George Andrews and an impressive roster of session players including bassist Phil Upchurch, drummer Don Simmons and percussionist Bobby Christian. Includes "Jenny", "Voice In The Wind", "To A Flame", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", "Refuge", "Song For Craig", "A Light Is Shining", "Feel The Spirit" and more. This great CD edition on Lion is really loaded up with bonus tracks – single mixes, B-Sides, alternate takes and more! Those include "Joy", "Hawg For You Baby", "Country Woman (OV/1038) (Single B-Side)", "Jenny (Single Mix)" and many more. 25 tracks in all.

Bonnie Koloc — After All This Time ... LP
Ovation, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $6.99
Righteous earth mama vibes from our hometown sweetheart Bonnie Koloc. Bonnie was part of the original folk cabaret scene around old town here in Chicago, and this is her first album, with her gutsy, folky vocals and songwriting underpinned by a groovy rock-inflected backing band, that features Phil Upchurch on bass! Titles include "Don't Leave Me", "After All This Time", "new York City Blues", "Devil's Nine Questions", "Another new Morn", "Rainy Day Lady", "Jazz Man", "Victoria's Morning", "Got To Get What You Can", and "One Sure Thing".

new Hollins & Starr — Sidewalks Talking (with bonus tracks) (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Ovation/Lion, 1970. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing little record – easily one of the coolest albums ever on the legendary Ovation label – and a set that has the small imprint almost hitting the heights of their Chicago neighbor Cadet Records! The core sounds here are from the folksy duo of Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr – but their music is really expanded with some key studio touches – jazzy inflections from session players, some slight fuller arrangements – and an overall vibe that carries the same sense of hope and new voice that you'd find in records by Terry Callier or Rotary Connection! The dawn of the 70s was a great time to push the boundaries of what could be done with folk and psychedelic trappings, and these guys really find a great little space – balancing trippy lyricism, lots of ethereal atmosphere, and a few heavily percussive jams! Titles include "Talking To Myself", "Krishna Dov", "Cry Baby Cry", "Twin City Prayer", "John Hurt", "Hard Headed Women", "Lovable", "Digress", "Staying High", "Sidewalk's Talkin'", and "Feelin' Good". CD features bonus tracks that include a 9 minute outtake of "Hard Headed Woman" – plus single versions of "Feelin Good" and "Lovable".

new GQ — GQ Two (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Completely sublime grooves from GQ – a second set that's almost even better than their first – thanks to perfect production, and wicked rhythms that are right on the money, track after track! The group start the set with a flurry of upbeat grooves that really show the full potential of ensemble funk at the end of the 70s – tight cuts that steer far from any disco or dancefloor cliches, and which have a bass-heavy sound that's completely infectious! Then, they flip things over with an equally great batch of ballads – mellow cuts that show that the group can handled the slower side of the tempo scale too – a perfect balance that really earns them the class you'd guess from a name like GQ. The set features a killer remake of Billy Stewart's "Sitting In The Park", plus the cuts "Standing Ovation", "Is It Cool", "Someday In Your Life", "Lies", "GQ Down", "Don't Stop This Feeling", and "Reason For The Season". CD features great bonus tracks – "Reason For The Season (12" version)", and "Standing Ovation (single version)".

new Jimi Hendrix Experience — Electric Ladyland ... CD
MCA/Experience Hendrix, 1968. Used .... $6.99
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that include s"Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower".

Kashif — Condition Of The Heart ... CD
Arista, 1985. Used .... $11.99
An 80s soul classic from Kashif – an artist who really helped transform R&B at the time, all without the benefit of a last name! The album's completely arranged and produced by Kashif himself – cementing the reputation he'd begun working behind other artists in the earlier part of the decade before going onto greater fame as a solo act on his own – a rock-solid approach to soul music that bristles with the best innovations of the 80s soul generation. Most tunes are heavy on beats, but use them in just the right ways – and keyboards provide a good amount of the rest of the instrumentation, but fleshed out strongly so that they work well next to the vocals. Tunes are a nicely balanced blend of mature male soul and some slightly catchier groovers – and titles include "Botha Botha", "Dancing In The Dark", "Movie Song", "Say You Love Me", "Stay The Night", and "Condition Of The Heart".

Ovations featuring Louis Williams — One In A Million – The XL & Sounds Of Memphis Recordings ... CD
MGM/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
Sublime southern soul from The Ovations – a group with a really unique approach to their music! Unlike other southern groups of the time, The Ovations had a somewhat sweet style overall – one that was informed by their great love of the older music of Sam Cooke, and turned onto a hipper, more 70s-styled Memphis groove overall! Lead vocalist Louis Williams has a style that's as equally charming as Cooke, although with his own great touches overall – and the backings on some of the cuts add in a nice southern soul component, although still with the same sort of polish that Cooke might have appreciated. CD features 21 tracks in all – including their rare album for MGM, plus other singles for the Sounds Of Memphis and XL labels – as well as 6 previously unissued tunes, and one rare single for Chess! The package is a long-overdue tribute to this wonderful group, and titles include "Hooked On A Feeling", "One In A Million", "Touching Me", "So Nice To Be Loved By You", "I Can't Believe It's Over", "Having A Party", "Don't Say You Love Me", "I'm In Love", "Pure Natural Love", "Sweet Thing", "I Care For You", "Till I Find Some Way", "Hangin On", "You're My Little Girl", and "Gotta Get Free".

Various — Can't Be Satisfied – The XL & Sounds Of Memphis Story Vol 1 ... CD
Sounds Of Memphis/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
An under-discovered treasure trove of southern soul – incredible early 70s work from the Sounds Of Memphis label – arguably a hipper imprint than Stax Records at the time! Sounds Of Memphis, and related XL imprint, were a perfect showcase for the growing sophistication in southern soul at the time – the generation of artists who were shaking off the cliches of soul that played big with crossover crowds in the 60s, but which were holding back development of the music in the following decade. The styles here are every bit as rootsy as before, but they offer up new sounds, new styles, new subjects, and new singers – plus some older artists who shine even more brightly in this setting. The package is a great counterpart to the other Sounds Of Memphis set on Kent – that based on Barbara & The Browns – and the production, presentation, and care of this set is every bit as great as that one. Titles include "I Can't Be Satisfied" by Spencer Wiggins, "Last Mile Of The Way" by The Minits, "You're Welcome Back" by Ann Hodge, "Tell Him Tonight" by Rudolph Taylor, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Love" by Lou Roberts, "Talking About The Love I Have For You" by George Jackson, "Hook Like & Sinker" by Dan Greer, "You Can Lead Your Woman To The Altar" by William Bollinger, "Take It From Someone Who Knows" by The Ovations, "California Dreamin" by The Jacksonians, "Let the Movement Last" by Vision, and "Play Thing (alt mix)" by Barbara & The Browns.

Various — Contemporary Guitar (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Takoma/4 Men With Beards, 1966. New Copy .... $14.99 18.98
Contemporary guitar, circa 1966 – an amazing document of the acoustic innovations going on at the time – served up in a really free-thinking batch of tracks! The music here isn't really straight folk, and definitely isn't acoustic rock or blues either – and instead really represents the forefront of the acoustic underground headed up by John Fahey and the Takoma Records scene – music that's had an undeniable impact on the sounds of the past few decades – and which sounds as fresh today as when it was released 50 years ago! Most tracks are relatively long, with amazing phrasing, tone, and timing that really sets them apart from the pack – stone gems that include two "Raga" numbers by Max Ochs, "The Fahey Sampler" by John Fahey, "Water Verses" and "Children's Dance" by Harry Taussig, "The Thousand Incarnations Of The Rose" by Robbie Basho, and "Old Man Walking Blues" by Bukka White.
(Heavy vinyl – in a sweet tip-on cover!)

Various — Hurst Selection 2 ... CD
Soulandjazz.com (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
A smashing selection of soulful tunes from the Hurst series – all contemporary numbers, all underground, with plenty of gems you've likely not heard before! As with the first volume, the ear for a great track is key to the set – a really well-chosen batch of tunes that goes past the obvious heavy-hitters in the Neo Soul scene, to present some key up and comers, as well as a few familiar talents in some new mixes. Titles include the excellent 12" gem "1960 What (Gerardo Frisina Cuban soul mix)" by Gregory Porter – plus "Hit The Devil" by Room 56, "Pay Day" by Milan Ring, "Be Free" by Moonchild, "I'm Waiting On You" by Michon Young, "I'll Take You There" by Boukou Groove, "Everything I Need (ext mix)" by Maz, "Renovation" by Jazz Collective, and "Freedom" by Gabriele Poso.

Various — Memphis 70 – The City's Funk & Soul In The Decade After Otis 1968 to 1977 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $15.99
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale.

new Various — Complete Goldwax Singles Vol 1 – 1962 to 1966 ... CD
Goldwax/Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by the mighty Memphis-based Goldwax Records – material that shows the roots of the label's famous deep soul style, and a wide variety of other modes as well! From the start, it's clear that the ears at Goldwax really knew what they were doing – as even the more pop-oriented recordings here have something very different – a care and quality that makes digging through the label's catalog on a single-by-single basis just as great as doing the same with work from Stax/Volt! As with that company, you can first hear Goldwax getting their start in a few different styles – some of which were issued on other labels at the time – then settling into a classic mode pretty quickly, that massive Memphis soul style that easily made Goldwax one of the most important southern soul imprints of the 60s. The package features a whopping 58 tracks in all, plus full notes too – both a and b-sides of early singles, with titles that include "Toddlin" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "It's Wonderful To Be In Love" by The Ovations, "I Can't Make It" by James Carr, "Arabian Jerk" by The Merits, "I Can't Fight This Much Longer" by Eddie Bond, "That's How Strong My Love Is" by OV Wright, "Our Last Quarrel"by Bobby McDowell, "Will I Ever Be Free" by Jeb Stewart, "The Day The World Cried (parts 1 & 2)" by Oboe, "A Thousand Vows" by Bobby McDowell, "Spoonful" by The Playboy Five, "Rhythm Marie" by Phillip & The Faithfuls, "Country Style" by Dorothy Williams, "Have You Seen Jean" by Al Vance, "Lover's Crime" by Spencer Wiggins, and "My Motor Bike Balked" by The Lamars.

new Various — Complete Goldwax Singles Vol 2 – 1966/1967 ... CD
Goldwax/Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary work from Goldwax Records – pulled from a stretch when the Memphis imprint was really going strong! By the time of these tracks, Goldwax was really coming into their own – picking up some of the best soul currents of the Memphis scene – and rivaling the Stax/Volt powerhouse in terms of quality – especially on the deep soul tracks that Goldwax seemed to do better than anyone else! This 2CD package is a wonderful overview of these golden years for the label – and it features every single single, both a and b-sides intact – presented with detailed notes on each release. Some of the work is the stuff of Memphis soul legend – mixed in with some more unusual, lesser-known bits from the scene – including a few rock, blues, and country numbers as well. 54 tracks in all – with titles that include "Anything You Do Is Alright" by Spencer Wiggins, "Don't You Believe Him" by Ivory Joe Hunter, "Cry Me A Hand Full" by The Terrys, "Say You Need It" by Barbara Perry, "Lovable Girl" by James Carr, "When You Look In The Mirror" by Eddie Jefferson, "What Time Ye Got" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Little Things" by Jeannie Newman, "Forgetting You" by James Carr, "Hello Daughter" by Leroy Daniel, "I Can't Forget You" by The Yo Yos, "Good Times" by George & Greer, "Walking Out On You" by Spencer Wiggins, "Qualifications" by The Ovations, "Liquid Mood" by Timmy Thomas, "Call On Me" by Percy Milem, "Me & My Imagination" by The Ovations, and "The Wife Of The Life Of The Party" by Kathy Davis.

new Various — Complete Goldwax Singles Vol 3 – 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Goldwax/Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Smoking 60s soul from the Memphis scene – and quite possibly the best collection so far in this Goldwax series! The cuts here come from a point when the Memphis sound had really come together – grown in earlier years by labels like Goldwax and Stax on the local scene, now spilling out strongly to influence generations around the world. And although most of the Goldwax recordings on this collection never got the circulation enjoyed by other Memphis imprints, they definitely follow in spirit to some of the bigger hits of the time. The mix here is about 2/3 soul, with touches of country and funk on some of the other singles – although still a pretty hip variant on those genres too – and like the other volumes, this one presents both a and b-sides of all Goldwax singles, in numerical order. Titles include "Love Me Tonight" by Carmol Taylor, "Lonely Man" by Spencer Wiggins, "He Called Me Baby" by Jeannie Newman, "You Name It I've Had It" by Willie Walker, "She's About A Mover" by Percy Milem, "A Message To Young Lovers" by James Carr, "It's My Life" by Timmy Thomas, "You Had Your Choice" by The Ovations, "Soul City USA" by Spencer Wiggins, "Ticket To Ride" by Wee Willie Walker, "That's The Way Love Turned Out For Me" by James Carr, "Love Me Tonight" by Carmol Taylor, and "He's Too Old" by Spencer Wiggins. 56 tracks on 2CDs!

new Roy Ayers — I'm The One (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1987. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A late 80s effort for Columbia from the legendary Roy Ayers – his third and final album for the label from the early-to-mid 80s – a time that found Roy applying his classic smooth, jazzy soul style to a more profoundly modern vibe – and it works as well on this set as it did on any of his Columbia efforts of the period, if not better! Roy was never shy about embracing innovation, and here he's blending straight up 80s smooth soul with jazzy vibes galore, as well as some post-Future Shock electro touches, particularly on the dancefloor ready title track – but this the mellow, sultry numbers that really make this one a win. Titles include "I'm The One", "Don't You Ever Turn Away", "Let Me Love You", "Marlon", "Word", "Crack Attack", and "I Once Had Your Love". This 2011 CD edition from Soulmusic.com includes the bonus "I'm The One (Extended Dance Mix)".

Sublime Frequencies, Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Exciting music from Arabic guitar legend Omar Khorshid – material recorded in Beirut from 1973-1977 – instrumentals filled with impeccable playing by Khrorshid, who also plays Moog and synth, backed by percussion and some accordion for a really full, transcendent sound! Khorshid got little attention outside the Arab world, which is a real injustice if the music here is any indication. It's feverish stuff recorded at Polysound Studios with the latest production innovations of the time at their disposal – electronics are brought into the sound with grace and subtly, and none of the progressive elements compromise the influence of the great Arab composers who influenced Khorshid. Sublime Frequencies never disappoints, but this material is wonderful by any standard. Includes "Guitar El Chalk", "Wadil Muluk", "Sabirine", "Hebbina Hebbina", "Ah Ya Zaman", "Sidi Mansour", "Enta Omri", "Warakat Ya Nassib", "Taksim Sanat Alfeyn" and more.

new Ovations — Goldwax Recordings ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A long-overdue look at one of the greatest vocal groups on the southern scene of the 60s – the amazing Ovations, a trio with a sound like nobody else! The group were noted for a strong love of the music of Sam Cooke – and they worked in the years after Sam's death in a blend of sweet and smooth harmonies that were not only a loving tribute to the Cooke genius, but which also show the way that Sam's style might have changed in the 60s. Lead vocalist Louis Williams has a warm and crackling vocal mode that's very much in the Sam Cooke mode, but the use of additional harmonies from the group really changes the overall sound quite a bit – making for a warmer, smoother style that's very much the group's own, especially when it's being pushed by some heavier Memphis soul touches. The CD features 26 tracks in all, plus great notes on the group – and titles include "I've Gotta Go", "Don't Cry", "I Miss You Baby", "You Had Your Choice", "Happiness", "I'm Living Good", "Qualifications", "It's Wonderful To Be In Love", "You & Tom", "Won't You call", "Peace Of Mind", and "I Know You Don't Want Me".

new Various — Goldwax Story Vol 2 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the greatest deep soul labels ever – the legendary Goldwax Records, a smaller company that languished in the shadows of Stax and Hi Records during their glory years! Like so many small labels in cities that were important to soul music, Goldwax seemed to have an amazing talent for picking up all the bits that Stax and Hi left behind – recording artists who were every bit as good as the bigger stars from Memphis, but who also seemed to benefit even more from the personal sound, and richer recording quality they got from the label. The most legendary figure to record for Goldwax was James Carr, and the work on this set follows very much in Carr's tradition – a deeply burning, extremely heartfelt approach to southern soul – one that even leaves some of the bigger names of the scene in the dust! The set features 24 tracks in all, including a number of unreleased tracks – and it's packaged with a great set of notes on this legendary imprint! Titles include "I Never Loved A Woman" by Spencer Wiggins, "Crying Baby Baby Baby" by Percy Milem, "Welcome Home Baby" by Barbara Perry, "Peace Of Mind" by The Ovations, "Country Style" by Dorothy Williams, "Good Times" by George & Greer, "Toddlin" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "I Ain't Gonna Cheat On You No More" by Wee Willie Walker, "When You Look In The Mirror" by Eddie Jefferson, "The Side Wind" by The Lyrics, "Darling" by The Vel Tones, and "A Man Needs A Woman" by OB McClinton.
