✨✧ Wax PoeticsIssue #63 – Gary Clark Jr/Raury – Autumn 2015 ... Magazine
Wax Poetics, 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wax Poetics is pulling out a big talent roster this time around – covers with Raury and Gary Clark Jr – and inside articles on Leon Bridges, Boz Scaggs, Marilyn McLeod, Kamasi Washington, Onra, John Simon, and others! As usual, the coverage is as eclectic as the artists included – great features on talents both classic and contemporary, but who are often sometimes a bit far from the spotlight – and brought to light with the crate-digging commitment that's always made WP so great! Photos are great, text is rich, and there's hardly any ads in the magazine either! Magazine

Konrad AgnasRite Of Passage ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2023. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
A really compelling blend of jazz and electronics – served up here in a way that's very different than any other project of its nature! This isn't one of those records where reed improvisations mix with free analog electronics, yet it's also not one where electric rhythms provide the base for jazz samples – as Konrad Agnas criss-crosses all sorts of lines and styles with the record – sometimes reveling in the acoustic warmth of the saxophone work of Per Texas Johanssen, other times letting rhythms get crisp and crackling from his own drums, informed with work on an OP1 synthesizer! Torbjorn Zetterberg provides some amazing bass – almost funky at times, and certainly some of his most soulful work on record – and the group also features Hammond B3 and piano from Johan Graden. Titles include "Manech Och Vargen", "Bismillah", "Half Year Song", "Siwa", "Untitled 1972", "Don Rythmicon", "Rite Of Passage", and "Arthur & Jeremiah". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Truffle (Austria), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A completely mesmerizing performance from these three avant giants – all working in longform territory that owes a lot to Tony Conrad's sense of sound – but at a level that really draws plenty from the contributions of all three players! Jim O'Rourke handles harmonium, cranking the instrument at a constant level to create these beautiful tones – next to some sharper lines from Arnold Dreyblatt on equally drone-like violin – matched with these long bowed sonic passages from Conrad on cello. The album features a full 41 minute performance, recorded at Tonic in New York – split over both sides of the record. LP, Vinyl record album

Shamley, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
We don't know much about these guys, but the set's as groovy as you'd guess from the cover – a bit garagey, a bit psych, oddly spiritual, and very well-produced with this swirling vibe that really makes the most of the group's guitars and harmonized vocals! Van Dorn handles lead vocals, and wrote the songs on the set with JC Phillips – who produced half the album – on titles that include "Find Me", "Take A Friend", "Love Train", "No Number To Call", "Talk To The Soldier's Son", and "The Pot Starts To Boil". ✨✧ Moonrakers BandMoonrakers Band ... LP
EMI/Afrodelic (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A funky psychedelic nugget from the Nigerian scene of the 70s – a record that's got more of a lean small group take on some of the bigger ensemble modes of the period, in a way that really seems to give the Moonrakers Band lots of flexibility with their sound! Some numbers might be a bit more guitar-heavy, others will have more organ – and the rhythms shift between rock, funk, and maybe even a bit of inspiration from Jamaican music – as the group serve up lyrics that are mostly in English, but with a definite offbeat vibe. There's occasional currents that resonate with Zamrock work of the decade, while other moments are straighter Afro Funk – on titles that include "Cut Your Coat According To Your Size", "We Got To Live", "What We Did Today Is Gone", "Wait For Me", "Little Sister Of Line", and "Enia Se Pele". Bill EvansWe Will Meet Again ... LP
Warner, 1979. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the few larger group Bill Evans sessions from the later years – an album that features sax and flute from Larry Schneider and trumpet from Tom Harrell – in addition to core trio instrumentation from Bill on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes. Bill plays a bit of electric piano on the set – especially beautifully on the track "Only Child" – and other titles include "Comrade Conrad", "Peri's Scope", "We Will Meet Again", "Bill's Hit Tune", "Laurie", "Five", and "For All We Know". ✨✧ Milt JacksonMilt Jackson Quartet ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1955. Used ... $7.99
A slightly different take on the Modern Jazz Quartet sound of the early years – as the album features Milt Jackson's vibes in the company of MJQ bandmates Percy Heath and Connie Kay, but also includes Horace Silver on piano – in the spot normally reserved for John Lewis! The presence of Silver on piano gives a bit of a harder edge to the set, one that almost recalls some of Jackson's work on Blue Note in the early 50s, yet which is rounded out here by a few lighter and more lyrical touches on rhythm. The set includes a great reading of "Moonray", the Jackson original "Stonewall", and the tracks "Wonder Why", "I Should Care", and "My Funny Valentine". CD

Per Texas JohanssonOrkester Omnitonal ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2023. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A compelling chapter in the long and wonderful career of reedman Per Texas Johansson – a set that features a larger ensemble interpreting his ideas, and working with a really incredible combination of horns! The group perform three longer compositions under the direction of Johan Siberg, and there's an insane criss-crossing of instruments throughout – a variety of clarinets from Per, plus other reeds from Johan Horlen, Astrid Le Clercq, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Alberto Pinton, and Linus Lindblom – plus trumpets from Joakim Agnas, Emil Strandberg, and Karl Olandersson – and trombones from Mats Aleklint, Mats Agelid, and Lisa Bodelius! The horns really shape the sound here, but there are some other elements in the mix – vibes from Mattias Stahl, bass from Par Ola Landin, piano from Rasmus Borg, and drums from Konrad Agnas – but all elements that really step back at many points and let the woodwinds and brass direct the music. Titles include "Livet I Tre Delar", "Klarinet", and "Orosmoln". CD

A relatively recent effort by Eddie, but also one of his best albums in 25 years! The record's a beautiful batch of Latin jazz instrumentals, played with a lot of fire, but also a lot of maturity and creativity. The compositions are great, and Eddie's in top form on piano, with backing by Donald Harrison, Conrad Hewig, and Brian Lynch. Titles include "Palmas", "Doctor Duck", "Bouncer", and "Slowvisor". Recorded in the 90s, but with a beautifully classic sound! CD

A Capitol classic from Dakota Staton – and the record that made her a real leading lady at the label in the years before Nancy Wilson's rise! The set's got a wonderfully laidback feel that's in keeping with the title, yet it also swings nicely too – kind of a new level of soul in jazz vocals that really points the way towards 60s recordings by Gloria Lynne, Etta Jones, and others. Backings are by Van Alexander, and include solos from Hank Jones on piano and Jonah Jones on trumpet – plus some great un-credited vibes and guitar – and titles include "The Late Late Show", "Give Me The Simple Life", "Moonray", "Ain't No Use", "Misty", "Summertime", and "What Do You See In Her". VariousAndy Votel Presents Brazilika – Non Stop Subtropical Psychedelia From The Vaults Of Brazil's Som Livre & RGE ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds! The tracks here are much grittier than the work we're used to hearing from the Far Out label – as Votel's dug through the 60s and 70s vaults of RGE/Som Livre Records to come up with rare Brazilian rock, funk, and other heavy styles from back in the day! As with Votel's reissues on Finders Keepers, there's a sound here that's informed by beathead record collecting – a love of older grooves directed by current musical developments – all with a definite ear for the wilder side of the sound spectrum. Most tracks have a pretty heavy groove – and the styles run from psychedelic rock through Tropicalia-inspired tunes, to post-bossa, Bahian sounds, and more. Titles include "Funga Funga" by Trio Soneca, "Careta" by Betinho, "Modulo Lunar" by Os Brazoes, "Terra Livre" by Abilio Manoel, "Os Bichos" by Trio Soneca, "De Vera" by Novos Baianos, "Ciladas" by Pery Ribeiro, "Se Voce Pensa" by Moraes Moreira, "Flores Belas" by Tim Maia, "1974" by Gerson Conrad & Zeze Motta, "Gamboa" by Brazilian Octopus, "Deixe Entrar Um Pouco D'Agua No Quintal" by Os Mutantes, "Periscopio" by Azimuth, and "Gotham City" by Os Brazoes. ✨✧ George ColemanMy Horns Of Plenty ... CD
Birdology (France), 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare moment in the major label spotlight for George Coleman – an early 90s session for Verve, and one that should have gotten him the same sort of ongoing recognition as contemporary sessions at the label by JJ Johnson, Randy Weston, and Joe Henderson! The format here is spare, but nicely varied – with Coleman on a tenor, soprano, and alto saxes alongside a trio of Harold Mabern on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. With a rhythm section that strong, you could almost throw just about any player up against them and get something great – but Coleman's also really pushing to the forefront of the tunes on most numbers, blowing with a deep voice and strong sound that almost recalls some of the work that Eric Alexander did in later years with Mabern. Titles include "Old Folks", "Lush Life", "Conrad", "My Romance", "You Mean So Much To Me", and "The Sheik Of Araby". CD

✨✧ Pierre DorgeSoundscapes ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. Anderson's bass is great – nicely pointed at the best moments, and a great contrast to Dorge's strings – and all tracks are originals, with titles that include "Lullaby For Sun Ra", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Afrikaa Mbizo Dyani", "Sim Sim Ba", and "Alligator In Paradise". ✨✧ Jerry FieldingJerry Fielding Plays A Dance Concert (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend, 1953/1954. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great early jazz work from Jerry Fielding – an artist who's probably much better known for his soundtracks of the 60s and 70s, but who sounds equally great here in a big band setting of the 50s! Fielding's style is heavy on modes blossoming in the LA scene of the time – modern, swinging, tight ensemble playing, but often with standout soloists like Conrad Gozzo, Buddy Collette, and Gerald Wiggins. The style isn't so much "dance" as it is swinging big band work – and titles include "Young Man's Fancy", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Song Of The Bayou", "Carefree", and "Cheerful Little Earful". ✨✧ Frank Lacy & Mingus Big BandMingus Sings ... CD
Sunnyside, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning reinvention of the music of Charles Mingus – still very much with all the fire and spirit of the great one's original intent – but taken to new territory here in the hands of Frank Lacy! Lacy is every bit the same sort of visionary leader as Mingus – and although he plays a hell of a trombone, he acts here mostly as a singer and director of a sublime large ensemble that features Jack Walrath and Lew Soloff on trumpets, Wayne Escoffery and Craig Handy on tenors, Conrad Herwig and Earl McIntyre on trombones, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and David Kikoski and Helen Sung on piano. Frank's voice is warmly raspy, and deeply personal – just right for the straining tension that often comes from the best Mingus music – that yearning for expression that continues to make his sound so powerful. Lyrics here are penned by Mingus himself – plus Langston Hughes, Joni Mitchell, and Elvis Costello – and titles include "Weird Nightmare", "Consider Me", "Eclipse", "Chair In The Sky", "Noonlight", "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", and "Sweet Sucker Dance". Warner, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A 60s rock and roll soundtrack, but one that's also a cut above the usual mixed-bag bunch – thanks to a nicely cohesive set of charts from arranger Frank Perkins! About half the tracks here are by Frank – and they're nicely groovy instrumentals that have a jot of jerk and twist rhythms beneath the bigger horns – which are then offset by some surprisingly decent vocal numbers that balance out the record and give it a nice depth. Instrumental tunes include "Palm Springs Scramble", "Go Go Devil", "Palm Canyon Bossa Nova", and "Prescription For Recovery" – and vocal tracks include "What Will I Tell Him" by Connie Stevens, "Live Young" by Troy Donahue, "Ox Driver" by Modern Folk Quartet, and "A Little Bit Of Give" by Robert Conrad. ✨✧ Cecil TaylorMusic From Two Continents – Live At Jazz Jamboree 84 ... CD
Listen Foundation (Poland), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious Cecil Taylor projects of the 80s – a special project performed by a large ensemble at a jazz festival in Poland – an incredible group who really expand the vision in Cecil's music! Make no mistake, Taylor is definitely the leader here – his piano and vocalizations really direct the entire set – but the music brims over with contributions from giants who include Tomasz Stanko and Enrico Rava on trumpets, Conrad Bauer on trombone, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Frank Wright and John Tchicai on tenors, Gunter Hampel on bass clarinet and vibes, and William Parker on bass. The performance features one long piece, but graced with all these really beautiful themes amidst the freer improvisations – coming across with a global vision in jazz that's maybe not unlike some of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music projects, but freer and bolder overall! ✨✧ Agnas Flaten Stahl TexasAll Slow Dream Gone ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The sound here is wonderful – a combination of elements from players we already love, but in a different way than some of their other records! One of the most distinct elements of the set comes from the work of Per Texas Johansson – who plays a variety of clarinets throughout, and evokes a sense of postwar modernism, especially as he combines with the vibes of Matthias Stahl – which are every bit as delightful here as on other records, yet again nicely different. Ingebrigt Haker Flaten has a lot more space and gentle swing than usual – and we're guessing a lot of credit for the record goes to the work of drummer Konrad Agnas – whose open style on the kit only seems to increase the sense of late 50s modernist experimentation on the record. Titles include "Slow", "Gone", "Tea", "Foolin", "Skin", "Deep", and "All". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Warren BarkerHawaiian Eye ... LP
Warner, 1960. Good ... Out Of Stock
A great blend of exotica, crime jazz, and dreamier themes – one of the first truly groovy soundtracks of the 60s! Warren Barker always brought a bit of a whimsical flair to his records, and this album's no exception – a playful mix of original numbers and a few familiar tunes that are sung by different members of the cast – not in a showy way, but in a laidback style that fits very nicely with the instrumentals! As you might guess from the Hawaii setting of the show, there's a fair number of tunes that have percussive exotica bottoms – and these are blended with some more traditional soundtrack numbers that still show Barker's nice light arranging touches, especially on the strings. Vocal numbers include "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" sung by Robert Conrad, "Let's Do It" sung by Connie Stevens, and "When My Dream Boat Comes Home" sung by Poncie Ponce – and instrumental numbers include "Hawaiian Eye", "Cabbie Kim", "Lopaka's Beat", "Cricket's Corner", and "Rumba Rhapsody". Mira/BGP (UK), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a James Bond cash-in record – and instead an ultra-hip jazz session from the west coast scene of the 60s! The James Bond at the helm of the record is actually Jimmy Bond – the great bassist who worked on some key sessions of the late 50s and early 60s as a sideman, and who turns out to be a surprisingly great leader on this rare mid 60s date! The record is more jazz than anything else – played with a crime/spy bent, to be sure – but also flowing with really great solos and a fair bit of a bossa influence in the rhythms! The group here is more than hip enough to make the record work – with Harold Land on tenor sax, Bobby Bryant on trumpet, and Buddy Colette on flute and tenor – all working in a sextet led by Bond, with plenty of round, warm, almost modal lines on his bass – punctuated nicely by piano from Joe Parnello and drums by Joh Guarin. Arrangements are by Dick Groove – who keeps things very groovy – and many of the tracks here are actually original numbers written by Bond and Warren Baker, titled after Ian Fleming books that had not yet been made into movies at the time of this album! Titles include "Casino Royale", "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only", "007 Theme From Dr No", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Diamonds Are Forever", and "Live & Let Die". CD

One of the coolest, most unusual albums ever from the great John Cale – a set that draws strongly on his roots in the New York underground of the mid 60s – including time spent with Tony Conrad and other experimentalists! The record is almost all instrumental – and has Cale mixing modes that include spare passages that are very evocative and contemplative, with fuller orchestral outbursts that are somewhere in the territory of his material with Terry Riley, but more freewheeling and less minimalist overall. Piano is the main instrument on many numbers, and Cale stuns us with his command of the keyboard – and the album features one striking vocal performance on the song "King Harry", alongside other titles that include "The Philosopher", "Brahms", "Legs Larry At Television Centre", "John Milton", and "Intro/Days Of Steam". A pretty sublime album from Bill Evans – one that has him playing both Fender Rhodes and Steinway, overdubbed together, for an effect that's laidback and completely wonderful! The Fender Rhodes was a natural choice for Evans – given his fluid lyrical style, and on this set (and on his equally great record for MGM) Bill opens up with an approach that really suits him well. Each track features him shifting back and forth between electric and acoustic modes, dancing from one to the other in a way that makes the instruments come together beautifully – supported by some incredibly soulful bass work by Eddie Gomez, and drums by Marty Morrell. The players including Jon Scofield on guitars, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Stefon Harris on vibes, Dave Holland on bass, Jack Dejohnette on drums, Conrad Herwig on trombone – plus guest vocalists Chaka Kahn on on number and Sting on another. Henderson's take on Porgy & Bess is respectful to the source material, but he makes it his own, a slow rolling, unfussy take on the material that goes over really well. Act I is made up of a brief intro, plus "Summertime", "Here Come De Honeyman/They Pass By Singin" and "My Man's Gone Now", Act II includes "I Got Plenty Of Nothin", "Bess, You Is My Woman Now", "I Love You Porgy" and more, and Act III wraps it up with "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York" and "Oh Bess, Where Is My Bess". ✨✧ Per Texas JohanssonDen Samsta Losningen Av Alla ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that's quite unlike anything else we've ever heard from this great European reedman – a set that seems to have Per Texas Johansson working in deeper tones, richer colors, and a bolder sense of music than before – more focus on the overall sound of the group, yet still with plenty of improvisations from individual members! There's often a strong bottom to the record – sublime work on bass from Petter Eldh, who's one of the secret heroes of the date – and who also seems to inspire bolder piano work from Johan Graden too – in a lineup that also features Mattias Stahl on vibes, Konrad Agnas on drums, Josefin Runsteen on viola and violin, and Johan Linstrom on pedal steel. Yet the real master of color here is Johansson – who blows oboe, bass clarinet, tenor, and other reed instruments – opening up with a sense of majesty that we're not sure we've ever heard before! Titles include "Var Ar Musiken", "Sent I Livet", "Mardrommen", "Dem Sista Isen", "Det Meningslosa", and "Stor Radila". CD

✨✧ Per Texas JohanssonOrkester Omnitonal ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johan Lindstrom SeptettOn The Asylum ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great change in the music of Swedish guitarist Johan Lindstrom – music that expands the vision of his previous record, and also explores some more song-based territory – while still allowing for lots of musical contributions from other players we love on the Moserobie label! You know something's different when Elvis Costello steps in on the first track for a bit of spoken lyrics to a song he wrote with Lindstrom – and things continue to move in other ways throughout – with vocals from Sofie Livebrandt on two tracks, amidst work from Jonas Kullhammar on saxes and flute, Per Texas Johansson on clarinet and tenor, Jesper Nordenstrom on piano and organ, Mats Aleklint on trombone Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass, and Konrad Agnas on drums! Most tracks are relatively short, but work together well – and there are definitely moments of improvisation amidst some of the more structured elements of the record – on titles that include "What What", "Homeward", "Trombone Interlude", "Edwards Chacone", "Music Orbit Box", "Septet Serenade", "Echoes Across The Dunes", and "Worms Of Underground". ✨✧ Henry ManciniBest Of Mancini Vols 1 & 2/Concert Sound/Mancini Salutes Sousa (plus bonus track) (SACD quadrophonic multi-channel) ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The super-sound of Henry Mancini, served up here in a special SACD set! The first half of the package features cuts from two different RCA albums that collect together some of the best of Mancini's music from the 60s – key soundtrack numbers and other instrumentals – in a lineup of tracks that includes "Charade", "Hatari", "Peter Gunn", "Lujon", "Breakfast At Tiffany's", "The Brothers Go To Mothers", "Pink Panther", "Dear Heart", "Cheers", and "Baby Elephant Walk". Concert Sound has Mancini working with larger orchestrations than usual, in an expansion of his usual 60s groove! The tracks here are all somewhat long – suite-type numbers made up from smaller songs wrapped together in new Mancini arrangements that have a really cool feel in this setting! The orchestra is somewhat large, with strings and woodwinds – but in true Mancini fashion, there's also key solos from players who include Pete Candoli and Conrad Gozzo on trumpet, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto sax, and Jimmy Rowles on piano. Titles include "Peter Gunn Meets Mr Lucky", "The Music Of David Rose", "Academy Award Selections", and "A Tribute To Victor Young". Mancini Salutes Sousa is a very weird one – as Henry Mancini pays tribute to the work of John Philip Sousa! As you'd expect from Sousa's marches, most of the work has a parade band military sound – and Mancini, despite his grooviness, hardly breaks format to change the style of the work. The approach has touches of some of Mancini's more military soundtrack work – and the recording quality definitely has a classic Hollywood approach – but overall, it's still Sousa. Titles include "The Gladiator", "Washington Post", "National Fencibles", "The Thunderer", and "Drum Corps". CD set also features the rare bonus track "Man Of The World" – originally only on a 7" single! CD

Jazzy goodness from Eddie Palmieri – a recent set that shows him still burning strong after a stunning 50 years in Latin music! The arrangements are spare, but extremely creative – well-penned jazz charts that allow Eddie plenty of modern moments on the keys of the piano, but which also always swing into a tight Latin groove when needed. Other players include Brian Lynch on trumpet, Conrad Herwig and Doug Beavers on trombones, Donald Harrison on alto sax, and John Benitez on bass – and titles include "Nica's Dream", "In Flight", "Listen Here", "Vals Con Bata", "Tema Para Eydie", "EP Blues", and "Mira Flores". Funky soundtrack tunes from the early 70s – a great mix of lesser known album cuts and a few other rare gems pulled from Universal's Soul Cinema series! The groove is wah-wah funk, fast riffing drums, tight "chase" theme grooves, and even a bit of soul – and tracks include "Monkey Hustle" by Jack Conrad, "It's Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" by GC Cameron, "Fat Poppadaddy" by Quincy Jones, "I'm Gonna Catch You" by The Hues Corporation, "The Boss" by James Brown, "Bus Stop" by Harry Betts, "King George" by Roy Ayers, "Give It To Me" by Isaac Hayes, "She Did It" by Barbara Mason & Monk Higgins, and "It Sure Is Groovy" by Gil Bernal. 13 cuts in all! ✨✧ Agnas Flaten Stahl TexasAll Slow Dream Gone ... CD
CD

A warmly wonderful blend of hip hop and contemporary soul from the LA scene – not the first record we've heard from Duckwrth, but one that definitely marks him as being at the best level the city's been giving us in recent years! There's a genre-breaking quality that's effortless here – part of that contemporary scene that no longer needs to draw the lines between hip hop and R&B that were so important in decades past – and are instead free to swim in the best elements of both, charting the way forward for urban music in the farther reaches of the 21st Century. The set features guest appearances from Jordan Ward, Destin Conrad, and Phabo – on titles that include "We Outside", "Make U Go", "4K", "Mask Off", "Link Up Time", and "Clueless". Prestige, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

A really great meeting of minds – as legendary Finnish saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen records here with a host of American players – all with a sound that's far more bold and timeless than you'd guess from the dated look of the original cover! The lineup here includes a few musicians that Eero worked with on a previous New York date – Ron McClure on bass, Jack De Johnette on drums, and John Scofield on guitar – alongside fresh partners Conrad Herwig on trombone, Dave Kikoski on piano, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – all musicians who really follow the lead of Koivistoinen, as he serves up some really beautiful original compositions for the set. A young Bugge Wesseltoft also adds in a bit of electronics on a few cuts – and titles include "Kabuki", "Altered Things", "Everblue", "Film Noir", "Clear Dream", "Maghreb", and "BLT". Not Two (Poland), 2020. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A set of recordings that must have left every single member in the group completely exhausted – as the 6CD package brings together material recorded over three great nights in early 2020 – all of which feature Barry Guy at the head of a unique version of his London Jazz Composers Orchestra! The material follows very strongly in that mix of structure and free improvisation that Guy pioneered with the LJCO many years back – and the lineup here is a mix of British giants and younger musicians from the European scene – the latter of whom bring some great life to the idea of the group! Guy is at the head on bass – and the larger group plays together on the final two CDs, but then breaks into different groupings on the first four CDs – combinations of players that include Augusti Fernandez on piano, Michael Niesemann and Jurg Wickihalder on alto, Simon Picard on tenor, Torben Snekkestad on tenor and soprano, Julius Gabriel on baritone, Konrad Bauer and Alan Tomlinson on trombones, Henry Lowther and Martin Eberle on trumpets, Phil Wachsmann on violin, Bruno Chevillon on bass, and Lucas Niggli on drums and percussion. The smaller groups work on CD1 through CD4, recorded at Alchemia – and CD5 and CD6 feature full LJCO performances at Manggha Hall on the last of the three nights. CD
