Association — Complete Warner Bros & Valiant Singles Collection ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99
Mindblowing music from The Association – a heady double-length package that features every single the group ever cut for the Valiant and Warner Brothers label – which together make for an amazing evolution in sound! Although best remembered for their few soft rock hits, The Association were a hell of a group who never stopped growing back in the 60s – from sublime folksy harmonies at the start, to more complicated baroque pop as years went on, to some psych elements, and even a return to rootsier sounds they never had in the first place – always delivered with qualities that were head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and perfectly put together in the best LA studio styles, with help from giants like Curt Boettcher, Gary Paxton, Bones Howe, and others. The group also became quite skilled in the studio themselves – as you'll hear in the book's copious notes and comments from members themselves – all a perfect package for a set that features 37 mighty tunes that include "Six Man Band", "Goodbye Columbus", "Like Always", "No Fair At All", "Standing Still", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", "Looking Glass", "Birthday Morning", "Makes Me Cry", "PF Sloan", "Just About The Same", "Traveler's Guide", "I Am Up For Europe", "Hear In Here",a nd "Forty Times" – not to mention some bigger hits!

Association — Insight Out (expanded mono edition) ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99
Fantastic dreamy pop! Despite the fact that this one yielded the super-huge hits "Windy" and "Never My Love", the album's also filled with great 60s pop tunes that you've probably never heard before – all as fantastically well-crafted and delicately strung-out as the big hits. The Association were truly one of the greatest 60s pop harmony groups to come out of the LA scene – and even a big hit album like this is the kind of gem that you'd spend years digging through rare vinyl to hope to find! Other titles include "Happiness Is", "On A Quiet Night", "We Love Us", "Reputation", and "Requiem For The Masses". This great expanded mono edition has 10 bonus tracks (!!!): "Autumn Afternoon", "Windy (Mono 45)", "Requiem For The Masses (Mono 45)", "Sometime (Instrumental)", "We Love Us (Instrumental)" and more.

Daughters Of Albion — Daughters Of Albion (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fontana/Now Sounds (UK), 1968. New Copy .... $13.99
Pretty great pop-psych from Daughters Of Albion – a set that mixes the sing-song nature of the tunes with some deeper LA production from Leon Russell – all in a great blend fo styles that's really made the album a standout over the years! The group's a duo – Greg Dempsey and Kathy Yesse, both of whom have such long hair, it's hard to tell who's who – both singers who come from a folksy background, yet bring in that mix of Sunshine Pop modes that so many post-folkies on the west coast were using at the time – a great ear for sweet harmonies and catchy tunes, but with an undercurrent of darkness too! Titles include "I Love Her And She Loves Me", "Still Care About You", "Yes Our Love Is Growing", "Candle Song", "Lady Fingers", "Sweet Susan Constantine", "Well Wired", and "John Flip Lockup". CD features two bonus tracks too – "Well Wired (mono 45)" and "Story Of Sad (mono 45)".

Knack — Time Waits For No One – The Complete Recordings ... CD
Capitol/Now Sounds (UK), 1966/1967. New Copy .... $13.99
Not the power pop phenom Knack of "My Sharona" fame – and not the mid 60s UK Knack. This is the mid 60s Sunset Strip Knack – and one of at least 3 great band to have that name that we've been hipped to so far! This particular Knack was fairly short-lived. They signed with Capitol and released 4 strong singles back in the day – and all 8 of those sides are on this CD from Now Sounds UK – along with 5 previously unreleased tunes. It's strong, hooky Cali-bred take on post Brit Invasion grooves – well worth the discovery! Titles include "Time Waits For No One", "I'm Aware", "Pretty Daisy", "Softly, Softly", "The Spell", "Freedom Now", "The Girl With The Dark Brown Eyes", "Once Upon A Cheek", "No Show Today", "Merry Go Round" and more.

Mamas & Papas — People Like Us (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dunhill/Now Sounds (UK), 1971. New Copy .... $13.99
The early 70s last hurrah for the Mamas & The Papas – who still deliver rich harmonies and a surprisingly creative breadth of styles on this long-delayed final album! The Cali rock scene, and the world at large, were both quite different in 1971 than they were in the late 60s – and to the Mamas & The Papas credit, they're really not out to replicate past glories. The vocals are still sweet and soaring, and there's an upbeat vibe, but it's a more laidback one. It's got a bit of an early 70s soft rock vibe, which we love! Includes "People Like Us", "Pacific Coast Highway", "Shooting Star", "European Bluebody", "I Wanna Be A Star", "Step Out", "Snowqueen Of Texas", ""No Dough", Blueberries For Breakfast" and more. This Now Sounds CD edition has a bunch of bonus tracks: "No Dough (Honeymoon) (Alt. Mix)", "April Anne", "Andy's Talkin' Blues (Demo)". "Revolution On Vacation (Alt. Mix)", "Me And My Uncle (Jack Of Diamonds)" and more.

MC Squared — Tantalizing Colours – The Reprise Recordings ... CD
Reprise/Now Sounds (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy .... $13.99
Glittering sunshine pop throughout! MC Squared has a name that may sound like a weak late 80s crossover rapper, but the group's a killer harmony act from late 60s Reprise Records – produced to perfection by Lenny Waronoker, and given the same mix of tight studio and hip undercurrents that you'd find in the hippest of the late 60s Warner generation – that slightly sinister edge that can always make LA pop of the time go a lot deeper than you might expect! This package is a true treasure trove of the group's work – their one full album for Reprise, plus bonus tracks from singles – all with a sound that you'd stack proudly next to work by artists like Roger Nichols or Paul Williams at the time. Titles include "The Dolphins", "Adults Only", "Bornatzatt", "Ghost Of Man", "Miss Abercrombie", "Do You Care", "Smilin", "Karneeval", and "Tantalizing Colours". Bonus tracks include "Or Something", "SST", "My Mind Goes High", "Smilin (mono)", and "Time Will Equalize".

Del Shannon — Home & Away (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99
A surprisingly trippy record by Del Shannon! The set is way different than the simpler pop you may know from Shannon's bigger hits – and the album's a rare late 60s gem with great British touches that include production by Andrew Loog Oldham and backings by Arthur Greenslade! There's a compressed psychedelic approach going on here that's served up with mellow organ, baroque orchestrations, and standout instrumental touches that would almost be enough, even without Shannon's vocals. But Del's presence is really what holds the whole album together – bringing in a sense of sweetness from past years, but also showing a strong desire to move into more mature themes that creates a really great sort of tension. Tunes include a few originals by Del, plus a number of other great ones by Andrew Rose and Billy Nichols – with titles that include "Led Along", "It's My Feeling", "Mind Over Matter", "My Love Has Gone", "Cut & Come Again", "Runaway 67", and "He Cheated". CD also features 5 bonus tracks too – mono singles mixes of titles on the album!

Various — Book A Trip – The Psych Pop Sounds Of Capitol Records ... CD
Capitol/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99
Groovy psychedelic pop on Capitol – showing how strangely, yet appealingly pop could stretch out with the resources of Capitol Records at the disposal of groups, producers & arrangers at a fruitful and furiously creative time in pop music! It was a period when David Axelrod, Ken Mansfield and other pioneering production wizards were at Capitol, and the set is filled with rarities – a number of which have never been reissued before, and stuff that could (or should) have made superstars of some of these cats! Great stuff from groups like This Side Up, Tuneful Trolley, The Four Preps, Sidewalk Skipper Band, Moorpark Intersection, Carnival Connection and more. 26 tracks in all: "Book A Trip" by This Side Up", "Lady In Lace" by Stained Glass, "Cynthia At The Garden" by Sidewalk Skipper Band, "Mr Sun" by The Lettermen, "Yours Till Forever" by Griffin, "Don't Take The Night Away" by Pleasure and more.

new Sugar Shoppe — Sugar Shoppe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool Capitol quartet from the end of the 60s – every bit as Sunshine Pop sounding as you'd guess from their name and image on the cover! There's a style here that's a bit different than some of the sweeter pop of the time – a slight undercurrent of darkness that's hard to peg easily, but which comes a bit from the way the male and female voices interact – and from the slightly unusual arrangements, which seem to rely heavily on some of the bluer notes in the spectrum. Vocals are arranged by Peter Mann, the leader of the group – and the instrumentation is by Mort Garson, whose presence is always appreciated. Titles include "Take Me Away", "Privilege", "Hanging Together", "The Candy Children Song", "Papa Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You", "Baby Baby", "Let The Truth Come Out", and "The Attitude". CD features lots of bonus tracks too – acetate takes of "Easy To Be Hard" and "Save The Country, a live version of "Charlie & Fred", and mono versions of "Let The Truth Come Out", "Privilege", and "Skip A Long Sam".

new Harpers Bizarre — Feelin Groovy (mono edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A dream – and the fab first LP by Harpers Bizarre! The group were one of the strangest pop ensembles operating in the seminal LA scene of the mid 60s – ostensibly a sweet harmony vocal group, but with a strangely childish approach that also had an ear open for the mind-blowing production styles of the Brian Wilson era. Van Dyke Parks was a big supporter of the group – and they perform a sublime version of his tune "Come To The Sunshine" as the leadoff track on the album – and even though Van Dyke didn't handle the arrangements of the record, the style of the music is very similar to his own, with guitar, bass, and drums coming into play with strings, woodwinds, and baroque orchestral touches. The record is as dark as it is sublime – one of those pop gems that hit big, but which has a brooding depth bubbling underneath the sugary coating – ala Pet Sounds. Tracks include "Happy Talk", "The Debutantes Ball", "I Can Hear The Darkness", "Raspberry Rug", and their huge hit version of "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin Groovy)". This Now Sounds UK CD edition includes the mono version of the album with a whopping 17 bonus tracks – the instrumental versions of several tunes, mono 45 mixes and 7 tracks by the pre-Harper's Bizarre group The Other Tikis. 26 tracks in all!

new New Wave — Little Dreams – The Canterbury Recordings ... CD
Canterbury/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
No, not the New Wave of French cinema and not the new wave of post punk pop errata in the late 70s and early 80s – this New Wave is a pretty great, yet poorly remembered LA soft rock group 'circa '67 – with laidback vocals and warmly soaring arrangements by the great Gene Page! The vocals are soft and harmony laden, with groovy 60s west coast songs lushed up with vibes, harpsichords, oboes, strings and lightly layered psych flourishes! This great Now Sounds UK CD features the group's original self-titled Canterbury album in both the original stereo and mono versions in full – plus 5 bonus tracks! Includes "Little Dreams", "The Shade Of The Sun", "Live For Today", "Not From You", "Where Do We Go From Here" and more – with bonus tracks "Tightrope", "Kiss The Mountain", "You Never Said I Love You" and 2 more.

new Every Mother's Son — Come On Down – The Complete MGM Recordings (Every Mothers' Son/Every Mothers' Son's Back) ... CD
MGM/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of Every Mothers' Son – two full albums, and a bonus single too! First up is the self-titled Every Mothers' Son album – filled with cool, catchy numbers that have a wonderfully sunny feel overall – and a spare approach that's a bit different than most of the group's contemporaries! The drums seem much more up in the mix than usual for this sort of work – snapping with a jaunty quality amidst guitar that's a bit more laidback, and harmonized vocals that have that perfect folk-into-pop mode that other Sunshine Pop groups were using at the time. There's a few blue notes here and there, which give the music some of the darker undercurrents you might hear in The Left Banke – and titles include "Come On Down To My Boat", "For Brandy", "I Won't", "Allison Dozer", "Sittin Here", "Come On Queenie", and "Didn't She Lie". The second album is a great step forward for Every Mothers' Son – a set that's got all the catchy charm of their debut, yet a deeper sound overall! There's a great maturation in the music going on here – as some cuts show a love of pop-psych elements, which comes off in fuller backings that swirl strongly around the lyrics – while other tracks have a leaner quality and more acoustic elements, almost into the territory of Beau Brummels on Reprise, especially given the way the vocals come across. The whole thing's a 60s pop treasure – filled with great original tunes that include "Rainflowers", "Dolls In The Clock", "Only Child", "Sally (Life Story #3)", "Put Your Mind At Ease", and "Larry's Birthday Party". CD also features a bonus mono single mix of "No One Knows".

new Harpers Bizarre — Anything Goes (mono edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Bizarre is right – and incredibly hip too! This was the group's second album – and while it has a lot of similarities with the first, it's also a lot deeper of an expression of their strange blend of harmony vocals, sweet 60s pop, and the nostalgia for the early 20th century that was running through the Burbank Warner scene that included a young Van Dyke Parks, Randy Newman, Lenny Waronker, and other LA underground of the mid 60s. The whole record fits together beautifully – beginning with an old-timey radio kind of announcer, then sliding into sublimely crafted harmony tunes that include originals from the LA luminaries and the group, plus a few other surprising covers. Titles include the hit version of "Anything Goes", plus "The Biggest Night Of Her Life", "Milord", "Virginia City", "High Coin", "Jessie", "This Is Only The Beginning", and "You Need A Change". This deluxe and expanded edition from Now Sounds UK includes the original mono album plus 9 bonus tracks: "Malibu U (Non-LP 45)", "Cotton Candy Sandman (Sandman's Coming) (Mono 45)", "The Biggest Night Of Her Life (Instrumental)", "Snow (Instrumental)", "Jessie (Instrumental)" and more.

Josh Berman — There Now ... CD
Delmark, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 16.99
Seminal Chicago sounds from cornetist Josh Berman – and a record that's not just a key example of his talents, but of the whole energy of the Windy City scene as well! There's a nice gag in the "His Gang" on the cover of the record – but it's also somewhat well put, too – as Berman's definitely got ears for the old-time sounds such a name might imply – yet always has ways of making those older modes come out with freshly modern energy! The balance is amazing – and really shows Josh's ear for trad jazz, mixed with his contemporary avant expressions – a pan-historical jazz mode that's hardly ever been handled this well – except maybe by Jaki Byard at a few moments. At some level, the instrumentation reads like an old trad band – cornet, clarinet, trombone, bass clarinet – but the sounds here are definitely 21st Century – played by a great "gang" that includes Guillermo Gregorio on clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Keefe Jackson on tenor, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on bass, and Frank Rosaly on drums. Berman's arrangements are wonderful – very offbeat, but swinging too – and titles include "Sugar", "Mobile & Blues", "Liza", "Cloudy", "One Train May Hide Another", and "Jada".

Booker T & The MGs — Original Album Series (5CD set) (Green Onions/Soul Dressing/And Now!/Hip Hug-Her/Doin' Our Thing) ... CD
Stax/Atlantic (UK), 1962/1965/1966/1967/1968. New Copy 5 CDs .... $28.99
Sublime sounds from Booker T & The MGs – the group's first five albums, laid out in one totally package! The progression in Memphis soul here is wonderful – as the package starts with the initial Green Onions set – a record that grew out of a famous jam from Book and the group in the studio – then moves through Soul Dressing, And Now, Hip Hug Her, and Doin Our Thing – records that get funkier and funkier at each new spin – showing how the group really tightened up their style, and helped transform the sound of instrumental soul in the process! Loads of great Hammond from Booker T, mixed with killer guitar from Steve Cropper – and a motherlode of great cuts that include "Green Onions", "Comin Home Baby", "Can't Be Still", "Home Grown", "Think", "Soul Jam", "Taboo", "One Mint Julep", "Plum Nellie", "Outrage", "Night Owl Walk", "Double Or Nothing", "Sunny", "Pigmy", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Hip Hug Her", "Soul Sanction", "The Beat Goes On", "Blue Or Green", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Never My Love", and "I Can Dig It". new James Carr — Complete James Carr – Vol 2 ... CD
Goldwax, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $7.99 11.99
James Carr is really maturing here – stepping forth with a sound that's every bit as great as his early Goldwax singles, yet also hitting a newly sophisticated vibe that helps take southern soul to a whole new level! Recordings were done both in Memphis and Muscle Shoals – and in addition to opening up a few more bluesy sounds in his style, James also brings in some of the more adult modes that he'd really help inspire in other singers in years to come – that open, honest attitude that really comes through in the more heartbreaking numbers. Titles include the classic "Dark End Of The Street" – plus "You Don't Want Me", "Hit & Run", "Bring Her Back", "Stronger Than Love", "More Love", "Gonna Send You Back To Georgia", "The Word Is Out", and "What The World Needs Now Is Love".

Cherrelle — Fragile (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1984. New Copy .... $16.99
Nothing Fragile here – as Cherrelle comes across with plenty of power on this debut LP – thanks to sharp production from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on some of the best cuts, and an overall groove that's right on the best side of early 80s soul! The Jam/Lewis tracks are heavy on keyboards and beats – but still have a nicely early, un-commercial sort of sound overall – never too poppy, and more in an indie soul club sort of groove. Other production is by Michael Everitt Dunlap and Isaac Suthers – who bring in some slightly softer sounds that show off Cherrelle's more sensitive ballad side. Titles include the hit "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" – plus "When You Look In My Eyes", "I Need You Now", "Who's It Gonna Be", "Like I Will", "Fragile Handle With Care", and "Stay With Me". Great reissue – with a book-like cover, lots of notes, and bonus tracks that include "Like I Will (Tokyo mix)", "Fragile Handle With Care", "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (edit)", "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (special rmx)", and "When You Look In My Eyes (special version)".

Dam-Funk — Toeachizown Vol 1 – Latrick ... LP
Stones Throw, 2009. New Copy .... $9.99
Galactic funk & synth soul from Dam-Funk – his epic full length debut Toeachizown for Stones Throw – and a record that should be a game changer for the southern Cali ambassador of cosmic funk beats, heavy bass and synth grooves! Dam-Funk is part throwback to the electro era – his vintage synths, bass and drum machine grooves are strongly rooted in the end of the 70s and first few years of the 80s vibe, but he's putting his own modern spin on the sounds, keeping it vital and fresh, and quite likely to be bitten by a bevy of superstar producers to come! Occasionally with slow jam or tripped out vocals, but with longer instrumental jams, Dam Funk's fusion of old school and future funk is in a cosmic realm of its own! Vinyl version was originally released as a 5LP set – and now it's available in separate volumes. Vol 1 includes: "Toeachizown", "Mirrors", "On & On", "Latrifying", "Let’s Take Off, Far Away!", Tunnels" and "Searchin' 4 Funk's Future".

Manu Dibango — Electric Africa ... LP
Celluloid, 1985. Near Mint- .... $19.99
While we have more or less dismissed a lot of the Celluloid world music productions from the 80s in the past, we look back now and realize that was pretty much just purist snobbery. This Laswell produced album of funky afro grooves doesn't have the same hard African funk that we dig so much about Dibango's early work, but it's more than just a respectable outing, and the 80s electro feel that's creeping in on a number of tracks sounds even better today. Most of the cuts are mid to down tempo, with playing that's a bit more smooth from Dibango's sax, and when you look at the crew Laswell assembled, it's quite the all star cast: Herbie Hancock, Bernie Worrell, Wally Badaru and Aiyb Deng alongside Dibango's Soul Makossa Gang. Four lengthy tracks: "Pata Piya", "Electric Africa", "Echoes Beti" and "L'Arbre A Palabres".

new Dan Greer — Beale Street Soul Man – The Sounds Of Memphis Sessions – 22 Lost Southern Soul Masterpieces From The Renowned Writer, Producer & Artist ... CD
Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
The first-ever tribute to this overlooked genius of southern soul – a set that brings together the rare early 70s singles from Dan Greer, plus a huge amount of unreleased work as well! Dan recorded these cuts for the Sounds Of Memphis label, in a style that really shows the changes in southern soul taking place at the time – that rich move forward you'd hear in the music of Sam Dees, Jimmy Lewis, and other key contemporaries who, along with Greer, really helped shake free of some of the 60s cliches of the genre – and stepped forth strongly with a sense of pride and power that's really amazing! The music's definitely got a Memphis vibe, but also echoes a bit of Nashville and Jackson soul as well – and Greer's slight lyrical twang is a really great fit for the slight bite in the way he puts his songs together. Titles include "Hook Line & Singer", "Shell Of A Man", "Thanks To You Girl", "How Does It Feel", "Bless You", "Voodoo Woman", "Share", "So Good To Be Young", "Any Moment Now", "Natural Reaction", "Only The Beginning", and "I'm A Lucky Guy".

Stax, 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 15.98
The first full length collaboration between blues, soul and rock slide guitar eclecticist Ben Harper and harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite – and it's win for both – with a vibe that's rooted in many traditions, but feels right at home in both Harper's and Musselwhite's wheelhouses. We expected a blues & soul covers set when we first heard that this project was in the works – and while the prospect of these 2 fellows working together on the classic Americana songbook sounds like a pretty good idea to us – we're actually all the more impressed with this all originals take on classic styled craft. A bit of blues and blues rock, a bit of gospel, and a bit of southern styled folk soul – and a bunch of great songs! It's a full band set up for the most part, too, as opposed to a spare duos set – and the titles include "Don't Look Twice", "I'm In I'm Out And I'm Gone", "We Can't End This Way", "You Found Another Lover (I Lost Another Friend), "I Ride At Dawn", "Get Up!", "She Got Kick", "Blood Side Out" and "All That Matters Now".

Eddie Harris — Plug Me In ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
Killer stuff – and an amazing album that not only showcases the varitone sax talents of Eddie Harris, but also features some fantastic arrangements by Chicago soul genius Charles Stepney! Harris plugs in right from the start – blowing an electric sax that comes up with some groovy groovy sounds – perfect for Stepney to work with on the backdrops – mixing together funky orchestrations, off-kilter strings, and even some prepared piano, ala John Cage – similar to the mode he used with Ramsey Lewis at Cadet! Tunes are wonderful – offbeat, funky, and plenty darn soulful – and titles include "Live Right Now", "It's Crazy", "Winter Meeting", and "Theme In Search Of A TV Commercial".

Hawthorne Headhunters — Myriad Of Now ... CD
HVW8/Plug Research, 2012. New Copy .... $9.99
Electro funk, boogie soul and spacey hip hop from Hawthorne Headhunters – completely delivering on the promising earlier EP and rivaling the best of their similarly-traveling peers – particularly Plug Research labelmate Shafiq Husayn, along with leftfield leaders Dam Funk and Georgia Anne Muldrow – and we do not take those comparisons lightly! The Hawthorne Headhunters started as more of a freewheeling collective, though here as more of a partnership between Coultrain and Black Spade. 70s jazz funk, 80s synth soul and otherwise spacey sounds and the insistent underlying bounce of the best hip hop continue to inform the sound. Titles include "Sum People Don't Change", "Collage" feat Rockwell Knuckles & Tef Po, "Luv Galactic" feat I Am, "Teleport", "Yellow Cougar", "Whirlwind", "Ghostfields", "Fairweather" feat Von Pea & Haz Solo, "Hole In The World", "Tribute" and more.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns — Sahara Swing ... CD
Now Again, 2008. New Copy .... $12.99 14.98
One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! Titles include "Followed Path", "When The Sun Breaks Through", "Sahara Swing", "Jabore (part 3)", "Debere", "Transition", "Mystical Brotherhood", "Toure Samar", and "Passau Run".

Heliocentrics — 13 Degrees Of Reality ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too.

new Bobby Hutcherson/Carmen McRae/Earl Klugh — Blue Note Meets The LA Philharmonic ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $15.99
An oft-overlooked gem from 70s Blue Note – and a great little record that's especially nice for the Bobby Hutcherson material! As you'd guess from the title, there's a larger orchestra working with the artists here – and in Hutcherson's case, this creates the same sort of soulful, sophisticated feel as his excellent Conception The Gift Of Love album – vibes mixed with strings, underscored by hip rhythms, and coming off as a wonderful extension of Bobby's earlier 70s work. His group features Manny Boyd on tenor and soprano, and George Cables on piano – and arrangements are by Dale Oehler, on tracks that include "Now", "Slow Change", and "Hello To The Wind" – all numbers co-penned with Eugene McDaniels, but done here as instrumentals. Carmen McRae sounds great in the setting too – similar to her other excellent Blue Note sides of the mid 70s – with Bill Holman arrangements on tunes that include "With One More Look At You", "Star Eyes", "The Man I Love", and "Sunday". Earl Klugh rounds things out with his own sweet guitar, plus keyboards from Onaje Allen Gumbs – set to Dick Hazard arrangements of "Angelina", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Cabo Frio".

Rikki Ililonga — Sunshine Love ... LP
Sepiso/Now Again, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 19.98
A fuzzy, freaky little set – and one that shows the Zambian scene really moving into some heady sounds for the second half of the 70s! The set's a standout effort from singer Rikki Ililonga – an artist who's now much more of a fully-fledged rocker than in previous years – singing with a bold style, and hitting lots of heavy notes along the way – thanks to backing by lots of fuzzy guitar that feels like it was lifted from some lost indie psych album from the late 60s US scene. There's much more darkness on the set than the sunshiney title would imply – and the haunting mix of modes is a perfect illustration of the strength of Zamrock at its best! Titles include "Working On The Wrong Thing", "Lovely Woman", "Lock Mice Elf Away", "Ulemu", and "Angel Black".

Rikki Ililonga — Zambia ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 19.98
The sound of Zambia, circa 1975 – a heady brew of psychedelic styles and deeper African roots – served up in the unique blend of modes that would come to be known as Zamrock! The album's got a dark feel right from the start – one of those records where it feels like something's a bit off, psychically – but in a great way that really keeps things compelling throughout – and which makes the music way more interesting than some of the other 70s African hybrids that were aiming for a much more mainstream market. Instead, the sounds of Rikki Ililonga and group are very much their own thing – sticking to territory that's very sharp and bracing – as you'll hear on cuts that include "The Hole", "Shebeen Queen", "Zambia", "Hot Fingers", "The Nature Of Man", and "Sansa Kuwa".

Isley Brothers — Twist & Shout (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wand/Sundazed, 1962. New Copy .... $18.99
Hard soul genius from The Isley Brothers – a set that has the group sounding quite different than their smooth hits from later years – with a hard-burning quality that's mighty nice all the way through! The vocals are still tremendous – and in fact, given that these guys are usually moving at a pretty darn fast clip, the way they trade sounds is even more amazing – grooving to sounds that are even more upbeat than most Northern Soul – and presented with a great garagey edge! Titles include the familiar monster "Twist & Shout" – but all cuts are great, and include "Spanish Twist", "I Say Love", "Hold On Baby", "The Snake", "Don't You Feel", "Never Leave Me Baby", "You Better Come Home", and "Right Now".

Bruce Johnston & Terry Melcher — Best Of Bruce & Terry ... CD
Columbia/Sundazed, Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 18.98
Rare work from the west coast mainstream pop underground of the 60s – that magical musical place where cats who had bigger gigs were able to make some special sounds in between the chart singles – groovy little records that often got lost amidst the shifting sands of time! Two of the biggest talents on that scene of the time were Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and producer Terry Melcher – both of whom worked on much bigger projects, especially in later years, but also cut some cool stuff here together as a duo. The music here is heavy on the harmonies you'd expect from a duo with their experience – but most vocals are duo mode, not quartet or quintet – set amidst some totally sweet hot rod and surf-styled music – produced mostly by Melcher with this cool squished-up studio sound! The set features rare singles, a few unissued numbers, mono cuts, and even some work by the related Rogues – 20 whopping titles that include "Come On Let's Go", "Hawaii", "Summer Means Fun", "Raining In My Heart", "Roger's Reef", "Yeah", "Thank You Baby", "Halfway", "Four Strong Winds", "Look Who's Laughing Now", "Come Love", and "Custom Machine".

Les Maledictus Sound — Les Maledictus Sound ... CD
Mucho Gusto (Canada), 1968. New Copy .... $19.99
Psychedelic easy listening! This groovy late 60s instrumental session features fuzzy guitars, squeaky moog, heavy drums, and lilting strings – a bit like Pierre Henry, a bit like Francis Lai, and a lot like some of the best Italian sound library themes from the time – pretty weird and wonderful, and the sort of record that almost sounds better now than it did when it first leapt on the market! There's a very cool sound here that's a bit like some of the grooviest "jerk" records from the fuzzy French scene of the 60s – and titles include "Radio Pirat Program", "Am Stram Gram", "Kriminal Theme", "The Whistler", "Inside My Brain", "Concerto Genocide", "Crazy Circus", and "Heathcliff Y Cry Your Name". All instrumental – save for some weird electronic voices!

Little Willie John — Complete Hit Singles – A's & B's ... CD
King/Real Gone, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $17.99 18.98
Amazing sounds from one of the all-time greats – the legendary Little Willie John – not only a key inspiration to James Brown, but one of the formative forces in soul music at the start of the 60s! The material here was cut by King Records at the height of its R&B years, but it also stretches forth towards something new, too – a deeper, more expressive sound that really blows us out of the water, even all these decades later – vocals that are incredible, and virtually a blueprint for the style that would come to be known as deep soul in later years. The package brings together all of Little Willie John's hit singles for King, but also features the much more obscure b-sides too – making it an essential document of these legendary years – with a whopping 32 tracks that include "Now You Know", "Flamingo", "Spring Fever", "I'm Sorry", "My Nerves", "Do Something For Me", "Leave My Kitten Alone", "Let Nobody Love You", "Fever", "Tell It Like It Is", "Letter From My Darling", "Don't Leave Me Dear", "Right There", and "All Around The World".

Claudine Longet — Hello, Hello – The Best Of Claudine Longet ... CD
A&M/Rev-Ola (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99
Dreamy vocals, catchy tunes, bossa rhythms – it's gotta be Claudine Longet! During the late 60s, Claudine first warmed ears in America with a lovely take on the gentle sounds of the Astrud Gilberto era – a French-accented approach to mellow vocal pop, often touched with a bit of jazz or Brazilian rhythms in the arrangements, and often delivered on a pillow of sensuous sound by master arranger Nick DeCaro! Claudine got her fair share of bad press in later years, but on this set she's at the height of her early brilliance – working with a lighter-than-air approach to vocals, and a simple, almost naive style that makes even the lyrics of familiar tunes resonate with youthful freshness. CD features 25 tracks from Claudine's years at A&M Records, including some great non-LP tracks – titles that include "Hurry On Down", "Hello Hello", "White Horses", "The Look Of Love", "Small Talk", "Snow", "I Don't Intend To Spend Christmas Without You", "Creators Of Rain", "A Man & A Woman", "Meditation", "Both Sides Now", and "Walk In The Park".

Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton — Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton ... CD
Impulse/Celeste (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $28.99
One of the grooviest albums of the late 60s – a lost vocal treasure from the team of Dave MacKay & Vicky Hamilton! The pair were sort of like a hip version of Jackie & Roy – usually singing together on their tracks, with a mixed male/female vocal approach that sounds totally great – and which really fits the breezy mood of the tunes on the set! Dave himself plays Fender Rhodes and piano on the album – along with an odd little combo that includes flute and tenor played by Ira Schulman, percussion by Francisco Aguabella, and guest sitar by Bill Plummer. The whole thing's got an amazing feel that's equal parts groovy jazz and sunshine pop – and tunes include a great reading of Tom Scott's "Blues For Hari", Flip Nunez's classic "See You Later", and the original tracks "Jacques The Junkman", "Samba For Vicky", "Now", and "Moon Rider".

Albert Mangelsdorff — Legends Live – Audimax Freiburg June 22, 1964 ... CD
Jazz Haus (Germany), 1964. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Brilliant sounds from trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – a rare live set that captures the modern jazz giant at the height of his powers! The set was recorded around the same time as Albert's famous Now Jazz Rammwong record – and it's got a very similar feel, with lots of elements from Eastern and Indian music styles – touches of the exotic intertwined with modal rhythms, soulful solos, and some occasional freer jazz moments! The blend of sounds is completely captivating, and the recording quality is excellent – sharp enough to make the whole thing feel like some lost Saba/MPS gem from these incredibly creative years in German jazz. In addition to Mangelsdorff's trombone, the set also features tenor and soprano sax from Heinz Sauer, alto from Gunter Kronberg, bass from Gunter Lenz, and drums from Ralf Hubner – on titles that include "Sakura Waltz", "Raknahs", "Now Jazz Ramwong", "Oakaka", "Theme From Pather Panchali", "Burungkaka", and "Far Out Far East".

Jimmy McGriff — Soul Sugar ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing him – as the drums are tight, bass is great, and the overall groove is fantastic! The record's a little like Jimmy's Electric Funk album, but harder, with more breaks and basslines – and a non-stop groove that's a pure delight for any fan of deep funk! Great stuff, with "Ain't It Funky Now", "The Now Thing", "Fat Cakes", "New Volume", and "Bug Out".

The set's got a feel that's more in the Build An Ark/Carlos Nino camp than anything else we've heard on the Tru Thoughts label – and Menagerie's a very cool ensemble with Ferguson on guitar, plus tenor, flute, trumpet, soprano sax, Fender Rhodes, and lots of percussion – and added vibes from Roy Ayers on one key track! Alexander O'Neal — Alexander O'Neal (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1985. New Copy 2 CDs .... $19.99
The start of a legendary run for vocalist Alexander O'Neal – and a set that really helped redefine the sound of male soul in the 80s! O'Neal got his start in an early version of The Time, and he's working here with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis – but the sound of the record is way deeper than all of those references put together – a careful, classy set that definitely lives up to the vintage look of Alexander on the cover! Jam and Lewis play tightly in the group, handling most of the key instrumentation – often with a restrained style that's quite different than their pumping hits, which lets O'Neal's great vocals flow out with an undeniably soulful power. Rhythms often hit the best sort of groove for Alexander's style – which sounds best in a mellow or midtempo mode – and the set's filled with classics, including "A Broken Heart Can Mend", "If You Were Here Tonight", "Innocent", "What's Missing", "You Were Meant To Be My Lady", and "Look At Us Now". 2CD version features a cool book-like cover, new notes, and lots of bonus tracks – including "Are You The One", "Innocent (dance rmx)", "If You Were Here Tonight (soft version)", "You Were Meant To Be My Lady (ext dance rmx)", and "What's Missing (dance rmx)".

Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder — Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder ... LP
A&M, 1985. Very Good+ .... $1.99
The overlooked collaboration between Human League singer Philip Oakey and producer Giorgio Moroder! The duo initially worked together on the outstanding "Together In Electric Dreams" single – a surprise hit from Moroder's soundtrack for a forgettable movie – and given The Human League's move towards a dancefloor sound around the same time, the timing was perfect! Moroder lays down a soulful synth backdrop that rarely lets up – in fact, the first five tunes flow together almost like a continuous suite! Ultimately, this is a sweet, largely forgotten slice of quintessentially 80s sounds – in a style that's endured – especially when you consider its influence on groups like Passion Pit a good 25 years later! Other tracks include "Now", "Why Must The Show Go On", "In Transit", "Goodbye Bad Times" "Brand New Lover (Take A Chance)", "Be My Lover Now", "Valerie" and "Shake It Up".

Steve Parks — Movin' In The Right Direction (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solid Smoke/Shout (Japan), 1981. New Copy .... $24.99
A completely unique little set from singer Steve Parks – a set cut in the Bay Area scene of the early 80s – but done with a righteous 70s vibe that mixes jazz, soul, and bits of Latin influences as well! The overall approach is definitely soul, but there's plenty of jazz inflections in the vocals and instrumentation – a vibe that's not unlike the best sound of Jon Lucien on RCA, but which is carried here by Parks with a bit more force – and these undeniably fluid vocals sounds that really blow us away! Instrumentation is right on the money – warm, jazzy, and never hokey at all – with lots of great acoustic percussion at the core. Titles include the massive sample track "Movin In The Right Direction" – plus "All In A Day", "Everything's Gonna Be OK", "Don't Stop Now", "The Golden Key", and "Sadness In My Samba". CD features an insane number of bonus tracks – 9 more numbers that include "Wrong Decision", "Should've Been Wishing", "Wonderful", "Stop Drop Everything", "You Make It Easy For Me", and "Shimmy & Jive".

Instrumentation is heavy on percussion and organic elements – and the tunes do a great job of blending freewheeling performance with more focused grooves – an Afro-avant mode that really lives up to the group's legacy, carried off here by players who include Kenneth Nash on drums and percussion, Kimathi Asante on bass, Kash Killion on bass and cello, Bradie Speller on congas and electronics. Titles include "Memory Ritual", "Time Capsule", "What The World Needs Now", "Nebulosity", "Otherworldly", "Boundless Eternities", "Cloud Rider", "Uttering Sacred Words", and "They Came From Chicago".

Paul Rutherford — Gentle Harm Of The Bourgeoisie – Solo Trombone Improvisations (with bonus track) ... CD
Emanem (UK), 1976. New Copy .... $15.99 19.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by trombonist Paul Rutherford – an important talent on the British jazz scene of the 70s, and every bit as creative a player on his instrument as Albert Mangelsdorff or George Lewis! Like those players, Rutherford has a freely inventive quality that unlocks unexplored sounds in the trombone – but not in a way that's gimmicky or showy, which would be easy on the instrument – and instead possessed with a gentle soul and really coherent vision – heard wonderfully here in a spare solo setting, which gives Paul a lot more exposure than some of the larger group recordings in which he was a key participant in the earlier part of the decade. Titles are all live solo performances, and include "Noita Neila", "Esuni Setag", "Lonescariso", "Osirac Snol", and "Er Player Blues Now". CD features the bonus track "The Funny Side Of Discreet".

The Sisters Love sound is a great blend of funky rhythms, hard soul vocals, and soaring harmonies on the chorus – in a way that's almost a cross between the work of Lyn Collins at People Records with the best sounds of Sweet Inspirations over at Atlantic – but even more righteous overall, thanks to production work by the likes of Willie Hutch, Gloria Jones, Gene Chandler, and Monk Higgins! The set brings together singles recorded for Motown and A&M – all recorded over a period of 6 years, but tremendously unified overall – with a badass soul sound that rivals the legendary album by The Jackson Sisters. Titles include "Give Me Your Love", "My Love Is Yours", "The Bigger You Love", "Blackbird", "Ring Once", "Mr Fix It", "You've Got To Make Your Choice", "You've Got My Mind", "Now Is The Time", "Forget It I Got It", "Ha Ha Ha", "I Know You Love Me", and "Try It You'll Like It".

Stark Reality — Acting Thinking Feeling – The Complete Works 1968 to 1978 (3CD set) ... CD
Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3 CDs .... $28.99 29.98
Amazing sounds from The Stark Reality – an obscure group from the early 70s, but one who've really risen to fame over the years – thanks to their groundbreaking ear for new music, and their freewheeling way with a funky groove! This package brings together all the incredible work recorded by the group in the late 60s and early 70s – a mindblowing assortment of funky and fuzzy jazz tracks – almost all of which are graced by the offbeat vibes work of Monty Stark! Stark often adds a bit of distortion into his instrument, which makes for a very tripped-out approach to vibes – one that blends perfectly with the heavy funk of some of the rhythms, and the freaky guitar lines added to most tracks by a young John Abercrombie. Yet at other times, things are very laidback and chilled-out – balanced beautifully from track to track, in a way that illustrates the larger picture the group were always going for in their music. This massive package brings together everything Stark Reality ever recorded – their famous Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album, the Acting Thinking Feeling live performance, the Roller Coaster Ride/1969 album, and lots of rare singles too – more than enough music to please any fan of the group, and blow the minds of anyone who's just getting a first taste. Titles include "Roller Coaster Ride", "On Being Black", "New World Generation", "Theme To Say Brother", "Dreams", "Clouds", "All You Need To Make Music", "Rocket Ship", "Cooking", "The Old Prospector", and "Junkman's Song". Great package too – with two LP-styled CD sleeves inside a larger case, plus a big booklet of notes and photos!

The package is a great introduction to this important stretch in music – and features recordings that are every bit as mindblowing now as they were over 50 years ago – really revolutionary sounds and tones that went onto have an undeniable impact on modern music, yet which still sound even more amazing here in the original source recordings. Includes "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "Voile D'Orphee" by Pierre Henre, "Diamorphoses" and "Concret PH" by Iannis Xenakis, "Studie Nr 1" and "Gesang Der Junglinge" by Karlheinz Stockhausen, and "Cinq Etudes De Bruits" by Pierre Schaeffer.

Supremes — Reflections (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $41.99
One of the later Supremes albums with Diana Ross as the headliner – and the final Supremes album with Holland-Dozier-Holland pulling the strings – and led of by the incredible title track! "Reflections" is a straight up incredible tune – one of those late 60s Motown production that allowed some of the sunshine and leftfield touches of the Pet Sounds era bubble underneath – and the huge, glorious chorus you'll be humming forever. Load of the slowbuilding hooks on this one – with tracks that include "Forever Came Today", "I Can't Make It Alone", "In And Out Of Love", "Bah-Bah-Bah", "What The World Need Now Is Love", "Up, Up And Away", "Then", "Misery Makes It's Home In My Heart" and "Ode To Billy Joe".

Charles Tolliver — Charles Tolliver Big Band – Mosaic Select (Music Inc/Impact/previously unreleased) ... CD
Mosaic, 1970/1975/1979. New Copy 3CD .... $44.99
Early and mid 70s big band masterpieces from Charles Tolliver for Strata East – plus a brilliant batch of German recordings from 1979 with Hamburg's great NDR group that was never legitimately issued before now – in an amazing 3CD set from Mosaic! Disc One features the classic Impact – the first album by his legendary group on Strata East – a core quartet that features Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums and percussion – all augmented by some larger backings for the session! The core sound is amazing – with free lines that trade back and forth wonderfully, filled with life and a great lyrical sense of energy that Tolliver never had on some of his later sessions. The larger group hardly gets in the way at all – and they're mostly there just to shade in the background, but often drop out during the solos – giving full center stage exposure to Tolliver and Cowell! Tracks include "Ruthie's Heart", "Abscretions", "Household of Saud", and "On the Nile". Disc Two features Impact – an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Music Inc – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Titles include great versions of the Tolliver classics "Plight" and "Impact" – plus "Mother Wit", "Lynnsome", and "Grand Max". Disc Three is a hidden gem from Tolliver's career – 1979 radio broadcast sessions with the NDR big band that includes Benny Bailey on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Lukas Lindholm on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. Here Tolliver plays some of the Strata material with these great European players who really seem to relish the opportunity – with each contributing brilliant solos. Includes "Ruthie's Heart", "Mother's Wit", Grand Max", "Impact" and more.

Ventures — Wild Things ... CD
Dolton/Sundazed, 1966. New Copy .... $14.99 16.98
Heady sounds from the late 60s Ventures – as the group take on some of the fuzzed-up rock sounds of the time – most of which was arguably influenced by their own experiments earlier in the decade! There's actually a fair bit of original numbers on the set – some killer tracks that are heavy on guitar fuzz, and which would be right at home on the best biker soundtracks – stripped down here to the core sort of elements that really make them cook! Heavy drums, rumbling bass, and two sweet guitars over the top – on cuts that include "How Now Wild Cow", "Wildcat", "Wild Trip", "Fuzzy & Wild", "Wild & Wolly", and "Wild Child".

We Five — Make Someone Happy ... LP
A&M (Japan), 1967. Very Good .... $2.99
Sublime sounds from We Five – and a record that really takes the group past the pop styles of their debut! There's some nicely sinister echoes of the San Francisco scene going on here – more electric guitar than previously, used in edgey ways – and this more "arch" style on the female vocals from Bev Bevins – almost a slight Grace Slick aspect creeping in at the bottom. These elements are subtle, but really transform the sound of the record – and titles include "The First Time", "Our Day Will Come", "What's Goin On", "Poet", "You Let A Love Burn Out", "What Do I Do Now", and "High Flying Bird".
(Cover has some wear, with minor splitting on the spine.)

Witch — In The Past ... LP
Now Again, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 19.98
Tripped-out and wonderful sounds from Witch – served up in this excellent early record from the Zamrock kings of the 70s! Lyrics are in English, and have these dark tones that work perfectly with the group's offbeat guitar and organ lines – sometimes mixed here with acoustic guitar that changes things up from the fuzzier sound of their debut a bit – yet which still maintains a definitely trippy feel! The style isn't really psyche, but isn't Afro Funk either – and almost has some of the unique criss-crossing of modes you'd find in the hippest South American groups of the time. Titles include "Mushed Potatoe", "It's Alright", "Chance", "Young Lady", "Living In The Past", and "She Is Mine".

Witch — Lazy Bones ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 19.98
Global psychedelic grooves from Zambia – the tripped out sounds of Witch! Witch works in a killer rock groove on Lazy Bones, with furious rhythms, heavy drums and fuzzed out guitars. It's all nice and raw and done with a really heady and fierce sense of groove – but there's some more delicate moments with acoustic guitars, and a focus on melody, too – but most tunes bring the a raw, echoing fuzz groove. The lyrics are in English and many of their influences are western, but the African rock groove is in full effect, particularly in the insistent rhythms. Titles include "Black Tears", "Motherless Child", "Strange Dream", "Havoc", "October Night", "Off Ma Boots", "Lazy Bones", "Little Clown", and more.

The fourth album from Zambian psych-prog-funk greats Witch! Lukombo Vibes finds the group conjuring up more African sounds than on their earlier records – but it's still stirring it up from a globally flavored cauldron. The keyboards as spacey and out there as ever – done with a proggy funk feel that's totally great. The bass lines are killer too, and overall they're blending Afro rhythms with global rock as compellingly and uniquely as ever here. Tracks include "Thou Shalt Not Cry", "Bleeding Thunder", "Devil's Flight", "Blood Donor", "Nasauka". "Evening Of My Life", "See-Saw" and "Kangalaitoito".

Witch — We Intend To Create Havok – Complete Works 1972 to 1977 (4CD set) ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD .... $32.99 34.98
Amazing sounds from Witch – a Zambian group of the 70s, and easily one of the heaviest things happening in Africa at the time! Witch stands for "we intend to create havoc" – and the group's style here definitely gets that vibe right – serving up a heady brew of fuzzy guitars, rumbling bass, and dark rhythms – all very much in the best mix of psych and funk you'd find in the Zamrock scene of the time – but with an even prouder, louder feel overall – as if the group were poised to dominate the global market of the 70s – even though it's taken them decades longer to finally get the attention of ears in the Northern Hemisphere! The mix of sharp rhythms and deep bottoms puts the group somewhere in the territory of Cream or T Rex at their best – but they've also got a looser, freer, and more honest vibe that almost pre-figures 80s indie rock in the US – a vibe that's almost Homestead moving into Sub Pop, yet with a rougher production style that really keeps things interesting. A few of the group's albums have been reissued over the years, but this full-length package is simply mindblowing – a box set, with detailed notes, featuring their complete mid 70s recordings – including the albums Lukombo Vibes, Introduction, In The Past, Lazy Bones, and Including Janet – plus a whole bonus set of rare 7" single material too. Now again have really raised the bar with this sweet package – and trust us, the whole thing's an amazing discovering in 70s rock – a real special event of Mojo-like proportions!

Phil Woods — Greek Cooking ... LP
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $24.99
Great stuff! Phils Woods plays reeds over a cool crazy band of Greek players who are trying to do a "jazz meets Zorba the Greek" thing here. Sounds crazy, but the record's actually great, and has a mix of styles that comes together in an amazing way. We always used to pass this up, but now we love it – not only for the crazy cacaphonous sound of the greek players, but for the sweet right-on solos by Woods. Tracks include "Zorba The Greek", "Greek Cooking", "Nica", and "Got A Feelin".

Various — 94 Baker Street Revisited – Poptastic Sounds From The Apple Era – 1967 to 1968 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99
A rich array of underground sounds from late 60s London – most of which appear here for the first time ever! The set follows on the previous 94 Baker Street collection – and like that one, features obscure English singer/songwriters under contract to Apple – fresh talents signed up in the hopes that they'd later break big – lost to the shuffle of years amidst the misworkings of the company. Now, though, the folks at Cherry Red have done a great job of reconstructing this lost history – and have come up with a really great assortment of tracks pulled from rare demos – but mostly done at a level that's right up there with all the commercially-released British rock of the time. Most of these tracks have never been issued before – and titles include "Hold On" and "Sailing" by Joker, "You've Got A Hold On Someone" and "This Little Man Mk 1" by George Alexander, "Windy Love Affair" by Robert & Miles Priestley, "It's You" by Buddy Britten, "Any Day Now" by Coconut Mushroom, "Who Needs A King" and "Something New Every Day" by Timon, "How Does It Feel" by The Perishers, and "Kingfisher" by Barry Alexander.

Schema (Italy), 1999. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99
The start of a legend – and a key compilation to document the rich reworkings of Brazilian sounds in the 90s global scene! The collection is the first in the legendary series – and has a wider range than some of the others – as Schema moves past just their own recordings, and incorporates some key sounds from other labels as well – a number of which are now out of print. Given that most numbers here – at least these mixes – were only around on 12" singles, the collection is especially essential – and filled with gems that stand up well – and really set the blueprint for grooves in years to come! Titles include "Atabaque" by Jazzanova, "Servus Mr. Bond" by Les Gammas, "Outboard Jeopardy" by Modaji, "What's Your Number" by Ian Pooley (remixed by Jazzanova), "The Will Of Life" by DJ Matsuoka, and "Galacia" by Rainer Truby Trio.

Brownswood (UK), 2010. Used Gatefold .... $12.99
Hard to believe that Gilles Peterson is up to the 6th volume of his excellent Bubblers series – and maybe even harder to believe that the music continues to be this great! You might think that Gilles P would run out of goodies by now – but no, the man with the golden ears proves once again why he's been one of the most important folks to turn us onto new sounds over the past 20 years! The vibe is nicely contemporary throughout – and even when artists are playing with classic references, they've got a way of turning them into something new – often with that 21st Century Soul vibe that Peterson first proclaimed in the 90s – finally come to fruition on releases like this. Titles include "No Clear Reason" by Gang Colours, "Finest Hour (Planas rmx)" by Submotion Orchestra, "Here On The Plains (iambic rmx)" by Half Seas Over, "Intervales Theme" by Javelin, "Reality & Fantasy (Gilles Peterson rmx)" by Raphael Gulazzi, and "Let's Do It Again" by Great Weekend.

new Various — Buttons – From Champaign To Chicago ... CD
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $15.99 18.98
Numero Group does it again – and manages to pull together all the best bits from the crucially overlooked powerpop scene in the Land Of Lincoln – a wealth of wonderful groups from the 70s and 80s, all of whom recorded great indie sounds in Illinois! Sure, you've heard of Cheap Trick, and maybe The Kind – but Illinois was also home to handfuls of other great groups – many of whom never found national fame, due to lack of access to the kind of A&R that groups on the coast were getting. The sound here is wonderful – razor sharp guitars, super-tight drums, and tuneful lyrics that still burst forth with plenty of power – a great reminder that not all the hot energy of the late 70s was going into punk rock. As usual, Numero's overdone themselves with the package – lots of info on the groups, and the kind of stylish package that even goes way beyond most of the original records too. Titles include "At Practice" by Band Jocks, "Get Away" by Julian Leal, "I Wanna Make You" by Prettyboys, "Midnight Girls" by Eyz, "Where Are You Now" by Tom Orsi, "More & More" by Lay Z, "See You Tonight" by Contra-Band, "Kyle" by Loose Lips, "Total Insanity" by The Kind, "So Lifelike" by The Jerks, and "I Have Always Loved You" by Paul.

Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy LP & Book .... $26.99 29.98
Mellow soul heaven – and one of the greatest compilations of this style we've ever heard! This is exactly the kind of laidback, tripped-out soul we totally love – a host of rare ballads and love songs pulled from the 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – sometimes by groups who are better known for funky tracks, other times by overlooked harmony groups and solo singers who rival the greatness of east coast artists like The Moments or Whatnauts! And while the music is totally great on its own – the sort we're usually content to have someone slip us on a dodgy CD – the whole package is even more incredible – a huge 80 page book that features loads of photos, record images, and notes on these obscure giants – really a Numero-level sort of presentation for these amazing tracks. Titles include "I Don't Think I'll Ever Love Another" by Darling Dears, "Slippin Around" by Thomas East, "Since You've Been Gone" by Little Janice, "Love" by Black Conspirators, "What Am I Waiting For" by Black Exotics, "Who Do You Think You're Fooling (part 1)" by Symphonic Four, "I'll Find A True Love" by Lee Bonds, "Young Girl" by Jazzie Cazzie & The Eight Sounds, and "Is It Me You Really Love" by Black Velvet. Various — Now's The Time – Deep German Jazz Grooves 1956 to 1965 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $19.99
The cream of modern jazz in Germany during the postwar years – the kind of amazing music that never made it over to our side of the Atlantic, but which was really marking some great jazz development on the European scene of the time! As Germany picked itself up from the ashes of the war, it also experienced an amazing cultural rebirth – in film, literature, and especially music – music like this, which bursts forth with a freshness and urgency that still sounds as creatively compelling here in the 21st Century as it did back at the end of the 50s! The vibe is very much a precursor to better-known sounds from the Saba/MPS scene, and many of these artists later recorded for that label too – but here, the work is nicely early, and pretty darn great – a selection of titles that includes "Domicile" by Joki Freund & Albert Mangelsdorff, "Minority" by Michael Naura, "Lover Man" by Inge Brandenberg, "Night Bounce" by Attila Zoller, "Ease It" by Albert Mangelsdorff, "Madam B" by Die Deutschen All Stars, "Mike's Blues" by Michael Naura, and "Meeting At The Barberina" by Horst Jankowski & Rolf Kuhn.

Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $15.99
70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! Steppin Muzak, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy .... $9.99
The vibe gets wider and wider with each new entry in this classic series – no surprise, given the depth of sounds the Chicago steppers have been getting into! Some of the cuts here are almost of vintage that hits the starting time of the collection, while others reflect the growing love of 80s and 90s grooves among steppers – the careful selection of tracks from those decades, with a definite ear for a sweet mellow sound! Titles include "Golden Girl" by Jakarta, "Love On The Line" by Janice, "Please Be True" by Sof Touch, "Lost In Loving You" by The McCrarys, "42nd & 6th" by Till Bronner, "Now You Know" by Billy Butler, "Forever Yours (rmx)" by 101 North, "Thief" by Lil Louis, "Something Real" by Mikki Blue, "Love High" by Jeff Redd, "Commitment" by Scott Scheer, and "Girl's Gonna Get'Cha (rmx)" by Steady B.

new Felt — Felt (180 gram presing) ... LP
Nasco, 1971. Near Mint- (reissue).... $11.99 Just Sold Out!
Rare early 70s psychedelia from Felt – led by an Alabama teenager named Myke Jackson (not to be confused with the late 70s-80s post punk Felt) – as far as we know, it's the only Felt record and it's really good one! The group has something of a grounded basis, steeped in psych influences – particularly flavored by swirling keyboards – but there's a song-based, solidly emotional southern inflection to the material. Jackson sounds like an experienced cat, too – not a boy of 17! Titles include "Look At The Sun", "Now She's Gone", "Weepin' Mama Blues", "World", "The Change", and "Destination".

new Doris Allen — Shell Of A Woman – The Legendary Playground Sessions ... CD
Soulscape (UK), Late 60s/Mid 80s. Used .... $10.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Powerhouse soul from singer Doris Allen – who made a bit of a splash in the late 60s southern soul scene with duet partner Big John Hamilton – but who's own work from that time and a couple decades later have been under acknowledged in the digital era until now! The first half of the CD features the late 60s work, and it's wonderful – produced by Finley Duncan at Duncan's Playground Studios – featuring a couple of the Hamilton duets, but it's Doris's show. She can both shout out soulfully to the heavens and reign it in for more delicate numbers, and the often gritty soul backing of drums, organ and horns are of the finest caliber. The second half of the set jumps to the mid 80s, and the cleaner, smoother sounds of that era – still produced by Duncan – and Allen's voice as impeccable as earlier. Titles include "A Shell Of A Woman", "Kiss Yourself For Me", "Let A Little Love In", "A Place In My Heart", "Them Changes", "Bright Star", "Candy From A Baby", "Treat Me Like A Woman", "Full Time Fool", "Night Time Is The Right Time" and more, plus 9 previously unreleased tracks, including "Clean Up Woman", "Birmingham Jail", "Ashes Won't Burn" and more. 23 tracks in all!

Direction is by Jan Williams, and the performance features the Maelstrom Percussion Ensemble, plus assorted artists working turntables, radios, and other source recordings!

new Cherrelle — Fragile (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabu (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue).... $28.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
(Comes with bonus download card – but only works for non-North American customers.)

new George Clinton — R&B Skeletons In The Closet ... LP
Capitol, 1986. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
We kept hoping and hoping throughout the 80s that Clinton would get back into the funk of things, but it seems he never quite hit his stride, with the exception of the "Atomic Dog". And though we can't hold this up anywhere near his best work, it's a reasonably solid effort, given that we're now looking back on those 80s keyboard sounds, cheesy drum machines and bass heavy grooves with a bit more fondness these days. By this point, his band included former Headhunter Blackbyrd McKnight and former JB's Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker, plus the inimitable Bootsy Collins, and they cut seven grooves for you here, including "Electric Pygmies", "Do Fries Go With That Shake?" and the "Mix Master Suite".

Hatology (Switzerland), 2004. New Copy .... $9.99 19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title might give you some hint of the feel of the set – as it's got a relatively complex quality, one that definitely fits its naming with a difficult formula – although the music itself is anything by formulaic! The group's headed by tenorist Ellery Eskelin, and features a round of New York stalwarts that includes Andrea Parkins on piano and accordion, Jim Black on drums and percussion, Marc Ribot on guitar, Melvin Gibbs on bass, and Jessica Constable on voice – all working together in the mix of free jazz and more offbeat, art-based sounds they can create. Through it all, Eskelin's tenor brings a nice degree of soul to the set – and titles include "If Not Now", "Tell Me When", "Anyone's Guess", "Say It Again", and "More Than That".

new Four Seasons — Genuine Imitation Life Gazette ... LP
Philips, 1969. Used Gatefold .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wild little concept album from the Four Seasons – one that's packaged in newspaper-style cover, and which presents tunes that almost have that late 60s British "snapshots of life" approach to pop – particularly that put forth by The Kinks on Village Green Preservation Society. The album's a true genius effort from Bob Gaudio – now risen to the ranks of producer for the group, and also the key songwriter for the album too – working here in tandem with the great Jake Holmes, a wonderful choice for a record like this! Arrangements are inventive, playful, and definitely at a level that shows some influence from Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers – but there's also a focused, all-pop approach to the tunes too – one that's hook-heavy even when trippy, and which shows that the Four Seasons were as great at psychedelic and Sunshine Pop as any of the groups they'd inspired over the years. Titles include "Saturday's Father", "Wall Street Village Day", "Wonder What You'll Be", "Soul Of A Woman", "Something's On Her Mind", "American Crucifixion Resurrection", and "Mrs Stately's Garden".

new Jackie Gleason — Silk N Brass/The Now Sound ... CD
Capitol/Vocalion (UK), 1966/1969. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of late 60s gems from Jackie Gleason – back to back on a single CD! Silk N Brass features smooth groovy sounds from Jackie Gleason – a set that definitely serves up the silk and brass promised in the title – but which also features some nice solo work too – thanks to tenor from Charlie Ventura and trumpet from Pee Wee Ervin! There's a slight mid 60s groove to the record – one that's different than the sleepier sounds of Jackie's work from the previous decade – and arrangements by George Williams have a nice bounce at points. Titles include "Real Live Girl", "Girl From Ipanema", "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place", "Begin To Love", "It's Such A Happy Day", and "Starry-Eyed & Breathless". The Now Sound is a record that's definitely after our own heart – in case you couldn't tell from the title! The set has Jackie Gleason expanding his bag a bit for the late 60s – moving from the easy sound to the "Now Sound" – with the help of some cool electric sitar, pictured on the front of the set – and other hip instrumentation from Tom Scott on flutes, Milt Holland on tabla, and Emil Richards on a range of exotic percussion! The album's as totally wild and exotic as similar efforts on Impulse or Verve, but the record's still a great batch of "establishment hip" instrumentals – which shows Jackie trying to get a little hip for the times. George Williams handles arrangements, still with lots of the trademark Gleason strings – and titles include "Live For Life", "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You", "It Must Be Him", and "I Won't Cry Anymore".

new Heliocentrics — 13 Degrees Of Reality ... LP
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy .... $18.99 19.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too.

new Pat Martino — Starbright ... LP
Warner, 1976. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spacey electric work from guitarist Pat Martino – a record that seems to be as concerned with sound overall as it is with the jazz stylings of Martino's guitar! The older modes of Martino's 60s soul jazz work are very far gone by now – but in their place is a new sense of space and tone, one that makes him a completely different player altogether! A few cuts get hard and funky – pairing Martino with the fierce keyboard work of Gil Goldstein – while others are mellower and atmospheric, with lots of moody sounds floating along. Titles include "Fall", "Nefertiti", "City Lights", "Blue Macaw", "Prelude", and "Masquerade".

new Alexander O'Neal — Alexander O'Neal (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabu (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue).... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rhythms often hit the best sort of groove for Alexander's style – which sounds best in a mellow or midtempo mode – and the set's filled with classics, including "A Broken Heart Can Mend", "If You Were Here Tonight", "Innocent", "What's Missing", "You Were Meant To Be My Lady", and "Look At Us Now".

new Nancy Wilson — Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You/Now I'm A Woman (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from Nancy Wilson – a pair of gems, back to back on a single CD! Can't Take My Eyes Off You is a really great album from Nancy Wilson – a set that still has her working with the jazzy undercurrents of her best 60s work for Capitol Records – yet also moving into some hipper, more sophisticated soul styles too! There's a really strong adult vibe to the record – not that Nancy didn't have one before, but this time around there's even more sense of personality and experiential depth that really comes through in the choice of songs – and in Wilson's wonderful treatment of them. Tunes that might be stiff in the hands of someone else are really transformed here – with added thanks to Phil Wright for great arrangements on the record. Titles include a version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne", Burt Bacharach's obscure "Waitin For Charlie To Come Home", and the tracks "Trip With Me", "This Girl Is A Woman Now", "Mixed Up Girl", and "Words & Music". Now I'm A Woman is a really unique moment for Nancy – one in which she leaves the LA sound behind, and gets some special treatment from the young Philly crew of the Gamble & Huff studios! Arrangements on the set are by Thom Bell, Lenny Pakula, and Bobby Martin – and the style's an interesting mix of Nancy's pop jazz vocals with some of the lighter, sweeter sounds of the Philly scene at the start of the 70s. The result is a surprisingly wonderful album – quite different for Nancy, and with the kind of backings that really break her out of the sound of the 60s – and pave the way for the sophisticated style of the 70s. Titles include "Now I'm A Woman", "Let's Fall In Love All Over", "Lonely Lonely", "Joe", "How Many Broken Wings", and "The Real Me". CD features three bonus tracks – "Go Away & Find Yourself", "When You're Alone", and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me".

new Witch — We Intend To Create Havok – Complete Works 1972 to 1977 (4CD set) ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. Used 4CD .... $22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Now again have really raised the bar with this sweet package – and trust us, the whole thing's an amazing discovering in 70s rock – a real special event of Mojo-like proportions!

new Various — London Is The Place For Me Vols 5 & 6 – Afro-Cubism, Calypso, Highlife, Mento, & Jazz – The Music Of Young Black London ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $20.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
London's always been one of the hippest cities in the world – but back during the postwar years, there was an especially wonderful outpouring of music on the scene – a rich array of new sounds and styles pulled from around the globe – as so many residents from crumbling British empire came to live in the UK! Musicians and listeners arrived in London with plenty of cultural baggage on hand – influences from the Caribbean, West Africa, and India too – plus other smaller scenes that once fell under the British banner, all now the fuel for the cultural fire that was happening in England! The title here tells plenty about the music being made in this newly-formed scene – bits of African highlife, Jamaican calypso, American jazz, Cuban Latin, and more – all filtered into the modernism of the 50s, and given a new twist that was decidedly urban as well. The package may well be the most impressive so far in this legendary series – and is certainly the one that moves the farthest past any sort of easy expectations or cultural conventions. Titles include "Women Police In England" by Mighty Terror, "My Sorrow" by West African Swing Stars, "Cricket Umpires" by Lord Kitchener, "Jordhu" by Caribbean Swing Band, "Trumpet Highlife" by Shake Keane, "Calypso Mambo" by George Browne, "Cuban Nightingale" by Buddy Pipp's Highlifers, "Kitch" by The Quavers, "Tabu" by Mona Baptiste, "King Jimmy Foo Foo" by Tejan Sie with The West African Rhythm Brothers, "The Escape" by Dizzy Reece, "Mambo Contempo" by Ginger Johnson, "Life In Britain" by Mighty Terror, "Sway" by Buddy Pipp's Highlifers, "Song Of Joy" by Rupert Nurse's Calypso Band, "Joe Louis Calypso" by Lord Beginner, "Uncle Joe" by Fitzroy Coleman Quintet, "Me Donkey Want Water" by Tony Johnson, "Belly Lick" by Eric Hayden, "Nigeria Odowoyin" by West African Rhythm Brothers, and "Football Calypso" by King Timothy.

La Ti Da (Canada), 2011. New Copy (pic cover).... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Cool stuff from Vancouver's Ballantynes – the Hammond-heavy, moddish stormer "The Message" and the equally driving "Railtown Abbey" on the flip! The group does a pretty sweet job of building on 60s dancefloor rock & soul sounds without stepping too deep into a throwback vibe. Each of the group's 7 core members has a percussion credit and 5 of the 7 are credited with vocals – which clues you in on the stomping, clapping, sing-a-long kinda garage soul sound. A nice introduction to the group!
