Dr John — Locked Down ... CD
Nonesuch, 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
The best record in years – maybe decades – from the legendary Dr John – and a set that stands up strongly next to the messed-up Crescent City vibe of his 70s classics! Big thanks are due to Black Keys' guitarist Dan Auerbach – who produced and supervised the whole recording – and helped create the kind of rootsy studio proceedings that make for just the right vibe to help the Doctor hit all his best classic modes! Leon Michels brings in some great keyboards, too – and an undercurrent of El Michels funk – and Dr John's vocals really sparkle in the setting – stepping out with all the weird raspy elements we love so much. Titles include "Ice Age", "Getaway", "Kingdom Of Izzness", "You Lie", "Eleggua", "My Children My Angels", "Locked Down", and "Big Shot".
Also available: Locked Down (plus CD) ... LP $21.99

Caetano Veloso & David Byrne — Caetano Veloso & David Byrne Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Nonesuch, 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 18.98
A legendary pairing of two amazing artists – a once-in-a-lifetime performance from Caetano Veloso and David Byrne (and we don't mean that as a Talking Heads pun, either!) The album's got a stripped-down, acoustic feel that really lets both singers open up and dominate the proceedings – Caetano at first, in a presentation of some of his own songs – then Byrne on some of his music – all in an instrumental setting that features guitars from both singers, plus cello from Jacques Morelenbaum, and percussion from Mauro Refosco – starting from gentle spareness to more focused energy, a bit like the style used by Byrne in Stop Making Sense, yet still acoustic overall. The singers come together as the set moves on – clearly comfortable in a warm friendship – and titles include "Sampa", "Coracao Vagabundo", "Mahata", "The Revolution", "And She Was", "She Only Sleeps", "Life During Wartime", "Road To Nowhere", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para Bloco De Ile", "Terra", "Nothing But Flowers", and "Heaven".
Also available: Caetano Veloso & David Byrne Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD $8.99

new Caetano Veloso — Caetano Veloso (1986) ... LP
Nonesuch, 1986. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully spare album from Caetano Veloso – one of his greatest albums of the 80s, and quite unlike anything else he did in the decade! The sound here is almost a bit like Joao Gilberto's classic 1973 album for Polydor – mostly just acoustic guitar and vocals, recorded with a slight echo and a really warm feel overall – a quality that offers up a whole new side of Veloso's genius, with only a bit of added percussion on a few tracks. Caetano's vocals are wonderful – personal, intimate, and very rich, despite the quite setting – and titles include "Get Out Of Town", "Terra", "Nega Lauca/Billie Jean/Eleanor Rigby", "Luz Do Sol', "Trilhos Urbanhos", "Odara", and "Saudosismo".
(Includes the lyric insert.)

new Various — Africa – Witchcraft & Spiritual Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1975. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A second volume of ethnographic field recordings – an intriguing portrait of music not often captured on tape. While the title describes the rituals the music was meant to accompany as "witchcraft", the ceremonies are healing and, in some cases, celebratory, such as weddings and ritual circumcision. The music features a variety of percussion and tuned drums, as well as chants and ceremonial vocal refrains, and was recorded in Kenya and Tanzania. 16 pieces in all, including "Matondoni Wedding", "Tuken Moral Songs", "Giriama Spirit Dance", "Pokot Dance", "Song Of Dawn" and "Nyatiti".

new Various — Burundi – Music From The Heart Of Africa ... LP
Nonesuch, 1974. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful document focusing on the aboriginal musical traditions of Burundi in Central Africa. A variety of folk forms are showcased, from solo performances to ensemble pieces, many with vocals. The instrumentation is quite varied, unlike some of the other Nonesuch volumes, including flutes, one-stringed fiddle, a variety of drums and thumb piano. Like other traditional African music, the songs are built up on spiraling repetitive patterns, with rich folk melodies and themes overlaid on vocals. Includes "Yes I Love Micombero", "Bernadette", "Shepherd's Flute", "Walking Song", "Take Me Back to Mabayi", "Warriors Of The Drum" and "Walking Troubador", twelve songs in all.

new Saka Acquaye — Voices Of Africa – High-Life & Other Popular Music ... LP
Nonesuch, Mid 60s. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Interesting album. Although most Nonesuch Explorer sessions were ethnographic ones, recorded in the field by the label's engineers – this one's a studio session, recorded in New York by a group that's reputedly from Ghana, but which seems to be kind of a "fake" one from our perspective. Why? Well, because Charles Earland's playing tenor, for one – and although his native Philly was kind of far away from New York, we never heard it referred to as "Ghana"! Other players here are US-based jazz ones, too – like drummers Sonny Morgan and Robert Crowder, vibist Garvine Masseaux, and bassist George Brooks. The set's still got a strong High Life sound to it – but it also has jazz flourishes, too, in the way that was used some of the Art Blakey Afro-Drum experiments from the same time. Titles include "Ebony", "Bus Conductor", "Saturday Night", and "Sugar Soup".
(Cover has some wear, tape on the spine, WGN marker on back, and a bit of pen.)

new Charles Wuorinen — Time's Encomium ... LP
Nonesuch, 1969. Used .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
"Time's Encomium" is an extended work for synthesizer recorded at the Columbia-Princeton Music Center – and it's got some cool processed sounds that have a nice early computer music approach to them. A bit arty, but not without its darker moments!
(Cover has some tape on the spine and WGN marker on back.)

new Signal To Noise — Issue 63 – Spring 2012 ... Magazine
STN, 2011. New Copy .... $4.99
These guys always get our attention with something cool – and this time around, it's a great tribute to the Nonesuch Explorer Series – finally giving credit to the label's rich contribution to global sounds in the 60s and 70s! On the cover and inside, Loren Connors nods away in blue – as part of a nice long feature – and the issue also looks at the improv scene in Houston and the great Tim Berne! Lots of reviews and news – and plenty of nice ads too.
