No Mirage here – as the album's got a presence that's impossible to deny – a solid, soulful uttering from this key Chicago combo of the 70s! The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Most cuts are instrumental, and recorded beautifully – but one number, "The Ultimate Frontier", also features vocals from Anita Jefferies. Other cuts include "Slinky", "Mirage", "Just a Little Peace", and "March On".

A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers" (again!), "Coldest Days Of My Life", and "I Love Everything About You".

One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance, courtesy the lyricism and delivery of KRS-One. Importance aside, though, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang".

An excellent session for BYG! Anthony Braxton is recorded here with a number of other Chicago AACM players, including Steve McCall, Leroy Jenkins, and Leo Smith. The instrumentation includes an amazing range of oddball sound sources, including Hohner Organ, sirens, logs, mouth organ, sound machine, and chimes, and the set's played with all the sense of humor and adventure you'd expect from some of the young AACM players. The record begins with the extended "Composition No 1", which is a fairly free piece; then it moves into a nice solo by Braxton, and then a set of "small compositions", which have some excellent horn interplay between Braxton and Smith. The LP ends with a cool spoken piece by Braxton called "This Time...". Wild stuff, and a great record from his early period.

Great stuff – and possibly the best album ever by this classic harmony soul group! The style is wonderful – with Brenda's sweet voice in the lead, and backing by the all-male Tabulations. The overall approach was used by Gladys Knight & The Pips for years, but we've always liked Brenda's stuff better – because it's got a deeper soul approach, and much richer harmonies. This CD features all the tracks from the group's rare 1971 album, plus a number of singles that weren't on the record. Titles include "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue", "Don't Make Me Over", "The Touch Of You", "California Soul", "A Part Of You", "And My Heart Sang", "Lies Lies Lies", and "A Child No One Wanted".

A swirling blend of soul, funk, and jazzy grooves – and a super-rare album that we've never seen in the original! Supposedly, backing on the record is by the British Afro-Funk group Assagai – which sounds right to us, because there's a nice rolling conga groove on many of the tracks. Lead vocals are by Charles Hilton Brown, in a nicely raw soul style that reminds us a bit of Otis Redding, and a bit of Mike James Kirkland on some of his early 70s material. The record features vocal covers of a number of soul hits – like "Try A Little Tenderness", "Love Train", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some originals that are even better, like the funky instrumental "GRF", and the tunes "Maddox" and "Tell Me Once Again". Nice and raw, and with a sound hip enough to match the record's cover!

Funky! This oft-overlooked funky number features James shouting "pick up on this" a few times at the beginning – no instrumentation, just shouted vocals, in a great way that's excellent for dropping into a mix! The groove is in that bouncy style he was using in the 75/76 years, kind of like a rubber band grooving again and again!

The album that very firmly put Clarence Carter on the mainstream soul map – thanks to his brilliant version of the title tune! By the time of this set, Carter was already one hell of a soul singer – and really brought amazing sounds to play with classic production from Rick Hall and the Fame Studios gang. But when he pointed those talents towards the country soul story "Patches", he really found his groove – mixing southern roots from both sides of the fence into one really unique groove – and following it up with a host of other well-chosen tunes that really helped establish Carter's unique place in music. George Jackson co-wrote a number of the best tunes – a few with Clarence – and titles include "Patches", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Till I Can't Take It Anymore", "Changes", "Say Man", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", "CC Blues", and "Getting the Bills (But No Merchandise)".

Despite the title of the album, the group's a sharp-edged fusion combo – one that hails from late 70s Japan, and who works here in the best mainstream fusion mode of the time! The tunes are mostly jazz funk with a bit of polish – heavy on guitars from Kazuo Takeda, who also takes off on some pretty nice solos – and also featuring keyboards from Hisao Sakurai and tenor from Mitsuru Kanekuni. The record is never too jamming, nor too smooth – but one number does feature some unfortunate blues vocals from Takeda. Titles include "Spinning Toe Hold No 2", "No Problem", "Wild Cat", "Swamp Boy", and "Fou Fou Gun Gun".

A really compelling blend of sounds – and a set that's billed as a hip hop album, but which is way way more than that – more a wonderful hybrid of global styles, all wrapped up with the crispness of the contemporary Brazilian underground! The set begins with a number that's straight out Afro Funk, the rolls into tracks that really run the gamut – a hip hop number or two, other African styles, and most especially, some of those cool genre-defying moments that we've really come to love from Brazil in recent years. Criolo's vocals are wonderful, especially when he's singing – with a warmth that takes us back to singers of the samba soul generation – and titles include "Bogota", "Mario", "Subirusdoistiozin", "Linha De Frente", "Lion Man", "Sucrilhos", and "Samba Sambei".

Classic 60s pop from Jackie DeShannon – served up here with a massive batch of bonus tracks too! The core album was issued after Jackie's successful run opening up for The Beatles during their first American tour – but more than that easy association with the Fab Four, the record's actually a surprisingly great batch of material with a sweet west coast pop groove – and one that includes a fair number of original tunes written by Jackie herself! Jackie's ability to write her own material really made her stand out amongst sweeter female 60s singers – and it ensured that on an album like this, she'd be working with a depth that went beyond simple pop, and which avoided the over-trodden filler that clogged up too many other albums of the genre. Bonus tracks follow in a similar DeShannon-penned spirit – and the CD features a total of 20 tracks that include "She Don't Understand Him Like I Do", "Should I Cry", "You Won't Forget Me", "Did He Call Today Mama", "When You Walk In The Room", "Oh Boy", "The Prince", "Over You", "Till You Say You'll Be Mine", and "Today Will Have No Night".

Mindblowing work from Booker Ervin – one of our favorite albums ever from his years at Prestige, and a record that really earns its haunting title and cover image! Book's definitely headed out to space on this one – working in a freer mode than on some of his Texas tenor-styled albums – and getting great accompaniment in his journey from Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. The Davis/Dawson team is a delight throughout – soulful and in the pocket, yet working with enough sense of space to allow Ervin and Byard to really take off on their solos! The album features 4 long tracks – and titles include "There Is No Greater Love", "Number Two", "Mojo", and "I Can't Get Started".

A spacey bit of 70s jazz gets some great mixing here from Finnish studio maestro Didier – and the result is a tune that's almost as dark as some of his original work under the Didier's Sound Spectrum banner! "Ufology" begins with lots of weird analogue electronics – clearly enough to make you think you're having a Close Encounter – but then a really hard drum break comes into the mix, muted slightly at the bottom, and larger jazz orchestrations build over the top! The whole thing sounds like a great funky electronic 70s soundtrack number – and it's presented with some great bonus beats on the flip. Single also includes the track "No Comments" – another great tune from the 70s, done here with a really funky mix of electric rhythms and big band soloing!

Their classic, with the great long version of "Float On", which is a monster soul cut that stands tall with steppers and rappers alike. It's probably the best track they ever did, and it's all here in a version that's nearly 12 minutes long – with loads of samples that you'll recognize from numerous recent records. Also includes a number of other great, mellow 70s soul numbers, like "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Everything Happens For A Reason" and "No Stronger Love".

This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. A dozen hard early 60s Latin numbers – performed by Rene Grand and his combo, with some occasional vocals by Frankie Rodriguez – but also a number of great instrumentals with a sweet jazzy finish! The groove is very strong, with lots of mambo jazz in the mix, and a hard New York groove that really keeps the set lively – especially on the numbers that feature some smoking sax work! There's a bit of charanga moderna playing by the group, which creates some cool rhythms on the best cuts – and the album's a very unified session overall. Titles include "Cool", "Go Go Mambo", "Siga La Gente", "Sabroson", "Chacho", "Ahora No Pare", and "Going Cha Cha".

The full length debut of Mayer Hawthorne for Stones Throw – with both classic Motown and 60s & 70s Detroit indie soul influences, done the right way, and all of it wonderful and true to his heroes – after some promising early singles, we can now say emphatically that Mayer Hawthorne is indeed the real thing! On some of this material, Hawthorne is a one man soul band, with the tunes stripped to a gritty, raw soul essence – and on other tunes he gets some assistance on brass, strings and keys – pulling off a number of modes with equally excellent results. He evokes Curtis Mayfield when he gets the falsetto going, but other touchstone influences are apparent – a couple of the more uptempo tunes sound like they could be late 60s Temptations b-sides. Mayer may look like Dwight Schrute on the cover, but don't be fooled – his love for soul music is true and unironic, and he has the chops to pull it off! Roland plays moody jazz versions of some of the biggest soul hits of the early 70's – including tracks like "What's Going On", "Mercy Mercy Me", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some other nice originals which sum up his take on "blacknuss". Titles include "Blacknuss", "Which Way Is It Going", and "One Nation". Billy Butler is on guitar, and the great Sonelius Smith is on piano on a number of tracks. Roland even sings a bit, too!

Great work by a great singer – the far under-recorded Irene Kral, a lovely lady who really bridges a number of different camps in the vocal jazz world! At one level, Irene's got the coolness of a Christy or Connor, but at another, she's got a more open, swinging, and soulful style – one that comes off with none of the hoke of Anita O'Day, and which is a perfect balance between class, cool, and easy going honesty. The trio of Junior Mance provides the backings, and titles include "Better Than Anything", "The Meaning Of The Blues", "Passing By", "No More", "Nobody Else But Me", "This Is Always", and "It's A Wonderful World".

Bettye Lavette's best record yet for Anti- – a modern classic from a bonafide legendary southern soul singer – and she sounds as wonderful as she has in years! If her voice has picked up some grit over the years, it's no less beautiful – and the experience only enhances the material. The song choices are terrific – kicking off with the somewhat overlooked Dylan treasure "Everything Is Broken" – and several others eclectic, classic-level songs that span a number of genres – adapted masterfully into a timeless sound that's distinctly southern, but it eschews he retro revival style, for a unique vibe of it's own. A jazzy soul masterpiece from Webster Lewis – light years away from the rougher funk he cut at the start of the 70s! The album's beautifully put together – almost perfect at all points, at a level that we'd rank right up there with the best work by Leroy Hutson, Roy Ayers, or other contemporary maestros in the studio. Unlike some of the more commercial artists of his generation – who also came to soul through jazz – Webster doesn't push the hooks too hard, nor try too much for a hit. And instead, he's more than happy to stay in his own righteous space – with a sound that's smooth, but never slick – tight, but not uptight. He's got some great help on the record – including keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Skip Scarborough, guitar from David T Walker, and percussion from Willie Bobo – all of whom keep things cool. Vocals are handled by a number of singers, including Webster himself – and titles include "Bout The Love", "Let Me Be The One", "Love Won't Harm No One", "El Bobo", "Kemo Kemo", "A Quiet Thing", and "Flying High". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Reach Out" and "Boston".

Two wonderful sessions from pianist Nils Lindberg – easily one of the most important Swedish modernists at the start of the 60s! The first half of the CD features a jazz symphony, commissioned by Swedish TV for a European broadcast in 1963 – and penned by Lindberg with a really amazing depth of tone and musical ideas! There's kind of an initial Kenton-esque approach to tone and color, especially in the way the reeds come together – but the whole thing opens up with a spacious swing, and really extensive sort of vision – really going beyond simple 50s modes, and maybe coming closer to some of the best large-form works of the 60s by Americans like Oliver Nelson or Gary McFarland. Key players include Lars Gullin on baritone, Jan Allan on trumpet, Ake Persson on trombone, Rolf Billberg on alto, Harry Backlund on tenor, and of course Lindberg on piano. Next is another unusual TV performance – Jazz From Studio A, a 1961 live date that features a small combo with the mighty Benny Bailey on trumpet, plus Ake Persson on trombone, Rolf Billberg on alto, Bjarne Nerem on tenor, and Georg Ridel on bass. Tunes are mostly familiar, but swung with a nice edge – some of the modern tones you'd expect from the horn players, pushed out strongly through Lindberg's nice arrangements. Titles include "What's New", "Topsy", "I Remember You", and "Straight No Chaser".

The mighty James Cotton is on the cover, blowing up a storm – in an issue that also features big articles on Big Daddy Stallings and John Dee Holeman! The issue also features a very handy guide to blues festivals in 2013 – as well as a huge number of reviews, and key blues news too!

A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child".

A great little album from Pat Lundy – an enigmatic talent who crops up a number of times over the years – but always on different record labels, and always with a slightly different sound and style! This album's one of Pat's best – and has her working in a sophisticated soul style that's a lot like Marlena Shaw, with but some deep soul undercurrents too – a really great blend that was way ahead of its time when first issued back in 1973 – and a set that's still unlike most other records we can think of! Burt Keyes handles the arrangements, and he gives the whole thing a great sense of class right from the start – but also knows how to hit some funkier moments too, which really let Lundy unlock the bolder side of her vocals. Titles include "Only Love Spoken Here", "What Is Love", "Friend Of Mine", "Love Child", "He's The Father Of My Children", "No More Tears To Cry", and "I've Never Been A Woman Before".

A wonderful record by Bobby Lyle – and a genius blend of jazz, soul, and lots of other righteous sounds! Lyle started out as a keyboardist, but this album really has him taking off as a vocalist too – working in a sweet Roy Ayers-styled groove – one that blends mellow rhythms with warmly jazzy inflections – with roots in fusion, yet a tighter soul finish overall! Lyle's still got a few keyboard flights – of the sort heard on The Genie – but with Wayne Henderson at the production helm, things are a bit tighter overall – given a really wonderful focus that makes Bobby sound better than ever. Titles include the great funky number "Groove (Ain't No Doubt About It)", the warm stepper "Good Inside", and cool keyboard grooves like "Star Traveler", "Missing Your Love", and "Inner Space".

Classic work from Hugh Masekela – and the album that pushed him over the top! The record features his version of "Grazin In The Grass", a runaway instrumental hit when it was issued – and a sly little groover that was based upon some earlier South African pop melodies that Hugh copped from his roots. The group's a tight little quintet with Al Abreu on tenor and soprano sax, William Henderson on piano, Chuck Carter on drums, and Henry Franklin on bass. The whole thing's great – and tracks include "Stop", "Bajabula Bonke", "There Are Seeds To Sow", "Vuca", "Almost Seedless", and "No Face, No Name, and No Number".

A smashing 2CD set – one that features two very compelling albums from the lovely Maysa! First up is a self-titled album from 1964 – one of Maysa's first efforts ever, and done in the sweet style of the legendary Elenco label! The set's a live one, and features light bossa arrangements by Eumir Deodato – played by a combo that includes Deodato himself on organ and piano, plus vibes by the engimatic Ugo! Maysa's vocal tone still has some of the drama of later years, but the bossa arrangements really give the whole thing a lighter, livelier feel – one that we really love! Titles include "Demais", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Dindi", "Bouquet De Izabel", "Fim De Noite", and "Bom De Tristeza". Ando So Numa Multidao De Amores is a great one from 1970 – a record that features some great arrangements by Luiz Eca and Roberto Menescal, both of whom give the album a gentle glide that offsets the emotive quality of Maysa's vocals nicely. Titles include "Que Eu Canse E Descanse", "As Praias Desertas", "Quando Chegares", "Bonita", "Suas Maos", "Eu", "Assim Na Terra Como No Ceu", "Molambo", and "Yo Sin Ti". Plus, the CD also features a number of bonus tracks too – including "Historia De Amor", "Homem De Bem", "Depois De Tanto Tempo", "Tema De Simone", and "Nosso Caminho".

A genius group from the glory days of the New York avant scene of the 70s – yet one who haven't been nearly as well-documented as some of their contemporaries! The lineup here is legendary – a quintet with Charles Brackeen on tenor, flute, and soprano sax, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, William Parker on bass, Roger Blank on drums, and Tony Waters on percussion – working in ways that are really a bridge between the starker sounds of the ESP generation, and some of the looser, more collaborative energies of the loft jazz scene that was on the rise! This recording from 1974 is some of the only surviving work by the group – a well-recorded radio performance that has the group working through a number of compositions in sequence, often with very spiritual results. The package features rich recollections on the quintet by Ahmed Abdullah, and some great vintage images as well – and titles include "Face Of The Deep", "Redemption/Consecration", "Above The Cross/My Divine", and "Time & Money".

A great collection of hard-to-find work from Milton Nascimento – compilation tracks, guest appearances, and special projects all recorded over the past decade or so – most of which are almost better than material from albums recorded under his own name! There's a number of wonderful duets on here – showing Milton's strong spirit of reaching out to a larger musical community – and a few solo numbers too – often surprising song choices that really show his skill as an interpreter. Ain't No Big Thing captures the group near the beginning of their career – when they were sort of a funky soul army, featuring the instrumental talents of The Nite-Liters, the vocal strength of a number of excellent members, and the raw production skills of the great Harvey Fuqua! This album's one of their best-ever – and it features a great mix of soul and funk, with some sweet cuts, and other nice harder numbers, all done in the warm spirit of the group when they were in their prime. Includes "Honeybee", "Oh What a Feeling", "How Good It Feels", plus groovy covers, like "I Want to Make It With You" and "Never Can Say Goodbye". Coming Together is an excellent early album by New Birth – with a good straight ahead soul style, and some nice arrangements by Vernon Bullock, Harvey Fuqua, and Bert De Coteaux. The tracks are a mix of originals and covers, and the band is great throughout – grooving hard in a souful way that makes the record glisten with an honest intensity that's missing from some of the group's later work. With "African Cry", "Don't Knock My Love", "All the Way", "Two Kinds of People", "Yesterday I Heard The Rain", and "I Don't Want To Do Wrong". A tough one to find, and the album that will make you love the band!

An amazing collection of music from legendary bassist William Parker – 6 CDs' worth of performances, all of them unreleased, packaged together in a limited edition box set with a detailed booklet as well! The scope of the sounds is amazing – almost like finding the full career of a jazz musician in one space – even though it's only a slice of the rich contributions that Parker has made to music over his decades in jazz! A number of the tracks features important large ensembles that push forward ideas from the loft jazz generation – with players who include Daniel Carter on saxes, David S Ware on tenor, Jemeel Moondoc on alto, Charles Tyler on baritone, Roy Campbell and Raphe Malik on trumpets, Billy Bang on violin, and Rashid Bakr and Dennis Charles on drums. Other tracks feature sparer pairings that are especially haunting – duets between Parker's bass and the alto and trumpet of Daniel Carter, a trio with David S Ware on tenor and Dennis Charles on drums, and two long duo tracks with tenorist Charles Gayle! The whole thing's amazing – worth far more in music than its hefty price tag – and a huge discovery throughout!

The Wicked Pickett takes his groove up to Philly – and comes up with a whole new sound in the process – a raw new style for the 70s, and one that's almost even more compelling than his Muscle Shoals groove! The album was recorded at the early Sigma Sound studios in Philly – and features arrangements from Bobby Martin, Lenny Pakula, and Roland Chambers – all artists who really help bring in a northern vibe to Pickett's music, yet still let those amazingly raw vocals do their thing! In a way, it's this mix of raw and smooth that almost sets the scene for Philly International gems to come a few years later – especially since a lot of the tunes are penned by Gamble & Huff – and instrumentation is provided by Thom Bell on organ, Norman Harris and Bobby Eli on guitars, Ronnie Baker on bass, Earl Young on drums, and Vince Montana on vibes and percussion. Mighty funk & hip hop from Buffalo's Pseudo Intellectuals and Scott Down & DJ Cutler! "No Money Mo Problems" is a rugged & raw hip hop number from Pseudo Intellectual – with a jazz funk bass groove at the heart of it, and a conversational flow from the MCs. The funky hip hop remix "Blue Collar Funk" spun by SD & DJ C is a straight funky number at the core – cut up with heavier drums and hip hop vocal bits. It's a busy, disjointed funk jam in the best sense of the word!

A smoking little EP from Quasimode – proof that these guys pack more into a short space than most other groups do into a full album! "Summer Madness" isn't the 70s classic, but a jazzy groover with Japanese lyrics – soaring over a Rhodes-heavy groove that's also got plenty of horns. But 70s fans, have no fear – as the set also features a great version of the Johnny Hammond classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" – served up in a sweet mix of acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, with the same sort of snapping drums that made the original so great! The CD's completed by the Latin groover "OK Take Off" – a nice number with tight percussion at the bottom.

Brilliant work from Sun Ra – and one of his rarest LPs! This double LP set was recorded with only a quartet – John Gilmore on tenor, Michael Ray on trumpet, Luqman Ali on drums, and Ra on keyboards. The album's got a number of tracks that are relatively straight – at least for Ra – and which are played with a wonderful edge that makes them instantly compelling, sounding almost like obscure indie soul jazz sides from the east coast underground of the mid 70s. The feel on most numbers is very different than Ra's usual work, and the record sparkles with a genius that makes us wish someone would get the Horo catalog reissued sometime soon! Includes the sublime vocal tune "When There Is No Sun", plus the original tracks "The Horo", "Moon People", "Rome At Twilight", and "Friend & Friendship" – plus a very nice cover of "My Favorite Things"!

Spy themes galore – a full CD of famous James Bond tunes, paired with a whole bonus CD of additional work from Brit maestro Roland Shaw! Back in the 60s, Shaw recorded a host of great spy-styled sets for Decca – two albums of work with Bond on the cover and in the title, and two more with additional spy and secret agent themes! Cool quirky post-punk work from The Waitresses – a group who maybe were never as big as Blondie or Romeo Void, but shared a very similar space at the time! This album's best known for the classic "I Know What Boys Want" – a naughty little number that got plenty of dancefloor and radio play back in the day – but the whole album's an equally enjoyable romp, with lots of jagged guitars, sharp-edged rhythms, and cool snot-nosed vocals from Patty Donahue! Mars Williams blows some mighty reeds in the group – and titles include "I Know What Boys Want", "Wise Up", "It's My Car", "No Guilt", "Heat Night", and "Go On".

At some level, we have to admit, we've always been a shade disappointed in this record, no matter how many times we go back to it. It must be that the music doesn't quite live up to what the Efram Wolff cover image implies is within, and perhaps it's that Walker hasn't fully brought himself up to speed with the times to get with the hip righteousness that was going on in the Detroit scene of the early 70s. But there's a few ringers here, with some numbers arranged by Willie Hutch, Gene Page and James Carmichael, and Walker was hip enough to include a Leon Ware penned number, so though this album falls somewhere between Walker's signature gutbucket R&B sound that put himonthe charts and the heavy soul you'd hope for, it's got a few nice moments. Includes "It's Alright, Do What You Gotta Do", "Soul Clappin'", "Gimme that Beat (parts 1 & 2)" and "Peace & Understanding Is Hard To Find".

A stunner from Nicole Willis – her second album to date, and head and shoulders above the first! The record's a wonderfully dark set of soul tunes – done in a mode that's similar to that of much of the American underground work in recent years – but touched with lots of cosmic and trippy touches that belie her connection to the Scandinavian scene. Jimi Tenor had a hand in a number of the tracks on the set – as can be expected – but the album's got a more soulful finish overall than any of Jimi's own work, and really showcases Nicole as a strongly-growing vocalist and songwriter. The book's a co-production with The Wire – and definitely lives up to the thoughtfulness you'd expect from that association – as editor Rob Young pulls together work on Scott from a number of different fronts – served up first in chapters on specific records, each written by a different artist and commissioned for the book – then moving onto other interview material too. Given the strength of Gary's own work for Verve at the time, it's no surprise that he's a perfect accompanist for Getz on the session – working with just the right amount of space to let Stan stand out from the pack, and really creating a great blend of Brazilian rhythms and some of the modder 60s styles at Verve. An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California".

A landmark LP! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement. The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB stuff, with crazy production and a great sense of humor that still keeps the whole thing fresh today. Caetano Veloso contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Great stuff all 'round!

A legendary album! This previously unreleased album by Os Mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an English speaking market – but for years it's only been talked about in hushed whispers, and has only been heard by a lucky few! The record was recorded in Paris in 1970 – and it's ALL IN ENGLISH! (Not that we're biased against Portuguese, mind you – but since we're English speakers, it's kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) The record features a number of tunes from the Mutantes first two albums – redone here with translated lyrics, and in a compressed pop style that's a bit smoother than the original albums, but still very nice! In fact, the record's a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite – had the boneheads at Philips actually decided to release the record! No use crying over spilled milk, though – because the album's out now, and it's filled with loads of nice tracks like "Panis Et Circensis", "Batmacumba", "Tecnicolor", "El Justiciero", "I'm Sorry Baby", "Saravah", and a sublime reading of "Baby", a track that was virtually the manifesto for Tropicalia!

Unbelievable! This is one of the rarest Sun Ra records we've ever seen – and it's also one of the most compelling. There are no tracks listed on the label (although the Sun Ra discography lists them as "Sometimes The Universe Speaks", "Pleiades", "Third Heaven", "When There Is No Sun", "Halloween In Harlem", and "Shadow World") – and the sound is very very unusual. The first two tracks feature lots of spare reed work, mixing flutes, oboe, and clarinet with some occasional percussion. Then, the record shifts into an all-vocal number – almost like one of Ra's older doo wop tunes, but with a very strange sing-song lyric about the cosmos. Side two moves into larger group sounds, more in keeping with the mid 70s style of the Arkestra, and featuring some very firey solos mixed with a bit of synth. Great stuff, and the Arkestra at its most mystical!

One of the great albums that Pee Wee Russell recorded for Impulse during the late 60's, when they brought him back for some great comeback LPs in a number of different settings. This one has him playing as the main soloist with Oliver Nelson's orchestra. As with most of Nelson's work from the 60's, the arrangements are fresh, inspired, and leave lots of room for soloing. Russell's tone is fantastic, and it's no surprise that he's been named as an influence by a number of important reed players. Not trad stuff really, but more some swingin large band stuff, with nice pinched clarinet solos. Tracks include "This Is It", "Six & Four", "Pee Wee's Blues", and "Bopol".

The only compilation of 60s female soul trio The Apollas we've ever seen – beautiful tunes with sweet and soulful vocals, big emotions and excellent arrangements – fantastic stuff from the trio, earlier material recorded as The Lovejoys and solo numbers by singer Leola Jiles! We'd love to say we've been fortunate enough to have heard more than a handful of the great Loma and Warner 45s, but that isn't the case – so this compilation from Kent as rewarding for us as just about anything they've put together in recent years – which is really saying something! A number of the tracks are should-be anthems that really allow the girls to sing big – backed by brass and tight arrangements to suit. That said, they're diverse talents, and there's some sweeter girl group styled tunes here that come across just as strongly. Glorious! Titles include "You're Absolutely Right", "Who Would Want Me Now", "Jive Cat", "See The Silver Moon", "Pretty Red Balloons", "I'm Under The Influence Of Love", "Baby I'll Come", "My Soul Concerto" and more from The Apollas proper, plus "He Ain't No Angel" and "Wait 'Round The Corner" by The Lovejoys, "I've Got So Used To Loving You" and "Why I Was Born" by Leola Jiles and more. 25 tracks in all.

One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance, courtesy the lyricism and delivery of KRS-One. Importance aside, though, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang".

No throwback here – as the music is a bold step forward in the career of Leroy Burgess – previously unissued tracks from his glory days in the New York club scene, and work that's as great as any of the material that was formally issued on the market! Burgess has a great ear for a compelling groove – and the tracks here were all recorded privately during the period when he was at the height of his boogie years – working under the names of Phreek, Aleem, Logg, and Convertion – in a real flurry of great work that seemed to hit the scene with a new single month after month! The tracks are slightly less polished, but not in a bad way – as they've got a style that's even more personal than some of Burgess' other music – keyboard parts that are very spontaneous, and vocals that have a nice edge. Tracks are mostly upbeat, and titles include "Hold Up", "Scandal", "In The Moment", "Keepin On", "Midnight In The Streets", "It's So Easy", "Fly Girl", "Moment Of My Life", "All Into U", "Under Da Radar", and "You Are My Number One".

Brilliant early work from a young Willie Colon – a true hustler if there ever was one! The album has an amazing energy that really bridges a number of Latin scenes – it's part descarga jamming, part Latin soul, and part traditional Latin – put together with a no-nonsense approach that makes the whole thing come off like magic. A young Hector LaVoe is on lead vocals, but the real star here is the group – who have a lean, mean, stripped-down sound that's really great! Includes the jammer "The Hustler", plus "Eso Se Baila Asi", "Havana", "Guajiron", "Montero", and "Que Lio".

The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time. The second set of tracks was recorded for a unique big band session led by Art Blakey – featuring a core group with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop Jr, and Wendell Marshall on some tracks – plus a larger lineup on a number of others. The CD brings together a whopping 27 tracks from these sessions, including some great alternate takes – and titles include "Midriff", "Tippin", "The Outer World", "The Kiss Of No Return", "Pristine Take", and "Oasis" – a previously unreleased track!

An incredible collection of work from the great Johnny Copeland – way way way more stuff from the early years than we ever knew he recorded! Johnny's one of the few Texas singers of his generation who kept the flame burning brightly over the decades – but it's this stuff that's still his best work – amazing southern soul tracks handled in a mode that's unlike anything else – no Memphis or Muscle Shoals cliches here, and instead a really deep, personal approach to the music that makes tremendous use of Copeland's vocals! There's some slight undercurrents of blues at points, but the music is definitely soul – sometimes inflected with jazz on the mellower cuts, ala a Duke/Peacock recording – although the tracks here were for the Jet Stream, Wet Soul, and Wand labels – mixed here with a number of previously unreleased tracks. The 2CD package really hones in on Johnny's greatness – and serves up a whopping 43 tracks recorded between 1965 and 1971 – titles that include "The Invitation", "Why Don't You Make Up Your Mind", "Somebody's Been Scratchin", "Every Dog's Got His Day", "Wizard Of Art", "I Waited Too Long", "The Hip Hop", "Four Dried Beans", "Mother Nature", "You're Gonna Reap Just What You Sow", "Dedicated To The Greatest", "I Wish I Was Single", "Danger Zone", and "Slow Walk You Down".

An excellent batch of soulful and funky instrumental tracks – super-dope 70s work from funky arranger Monk Higgins! The album grooves in the best blacksploitation soundtrack mode – as Monk plays tenor sax and organ in the set, over slinky stepping arrangements that feature Paul Humphrey on drums, and Freddy Robinson on guitars – all coming together with Monk in a sweet LA style of early 70s funk! The groove is funky, yet laidback at the same time – and with some soulful backing vocals behind the instrumentation on a number of cuts – really the perfect sort of approach for a hip crime or action soundtrack. Tracks include "Little Mama", "If", "Highway No 101", "Walking In My Sleep", "Can't Stop", and the classic "Black Fox"!

Jellyfish take off from the Beach Boys' Stack O Tracks concept of an instrumental record – and offer up no-vocal versions of the albums Bellybutton and Spilt Milk! These aren't "stripped off" versions of the records – but complete instrumental readings of the music, recorded at the same time as the original records – issued here for the first time ever! Jellyfish's pair of early 90s albums are almost defiantly in the way they ignore the era's alt-rock boom in favor of classic psych and power pop – which is something they earned our respect for, both then and now – and you get to hear just how intricately-layered their sound is here on the instrumentals. It has the feel of late 60s and 70s rock film scores in a way – and it's really cool stuff – truly worthwhile to have sans vocals! 22 tracks on 2CDs: Bellybutton titles include "The Man I Used To Be", "That Is Why", "I Wanna Stay Home", "She Still Loves Him", "Now She Knows She's Wrong", "Bedspring Kiss", "Calling Sarah" and more – and Spilt Milk titles include "Hush", "Joining A Fan Club", "New Mistake", "The Ghost At Number One", "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late", "Brighter Day".

One of the best collaborations between Puerto Rican bandleader Kako and swingin' Panamanian vocalist Azuquita – and one of the seminal albums from the amazing late 60s era of West Side Latino Records! The record's got a number of nice tracks written by Louie Ramirez, including a few groovy boogaloos like "Panama's Boogaloo", "Aunque No Tengo Dinero", "Shingaling Shingaling", and "Cool Jerk", which is a Latin cover of the Capitols' hit. The title track "Live it Up" is, on top of being one of the most apt titles for a record we've come across in a while, a real pounder of Latin soul track with vocals by Bobby Marin. The whole thing adds up to one of those driving, heavily percussive Latin gems that we would surely have a hard time living without – and a real joy to see repressed on vinyl!

A jazzy soul masterpiece from Webster Lewis – light years away from the rougher funk he cut at the start of the 70s! The album's beautifully put together – almost perfect at all points, at a level that we'd rank right up there with the best work by Leroy Hutson, Roy Ayers, or other contemporary maestros in the studio. Unlike some of the more commercial artists of his generation – who also came to soul through jazz – Webster doesn't push the hooks too hard, nor try too much for a hit. And instead, he's more than happy to stay in his own righteous space – with a sound that's smooth, but never slick – tight, but not uptight. He's got some great help on the record – including keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Skip Scarborough, guitar from David T Walker, and percussion from Willie Bobo – all of whom keep things cool. Vocals are handled by a number of singers, including Webster himself – and titles include "Bout The Love", "Let Me Be The One", "Love Won't Harm No One", "El Bobo", "Kemo Kemo", "A Quiet Thing", and "Flying High". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Reach Out" and "Boston".

A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child".

70s work from Machito – still very much in the mode of his classics from earlier years, but with an undeniable punch on a few numbers, thanks to the smoking salsa groove of the Coco Records label! The album's got one really standout track entitled "Macho" – a 13 minute descarga number that spins out with lots of different changes, and which features some nice electric jazzy touches! Harvey Averne produced the entire session, with a nice undercurrent of Latin soul – and the album also features Charlie Palmieri on both organ and piano. Other tracks include "Mi Ritmo Llego", "Soy Salsero", "No Seras Para Mi", and "Desilusion".

A stone classic from The Manhattans – still going strong long into the 70s with a classic harmony approach! The title tune sets the whole album up perfectly – and is the kind of a sad, slow ballad that the group was always perfect at – a number that grabs you with a compelling title, and follows up with a sublime lyric that holds on for the entire track! The rest of the set follows in a similar sweet ballad mode – served up with impeccable Bobby Martin production that's smooth, yet still lets the vocals come to the forefront in a classic harmony mode. Titles include "There's No Good In Goodbye", "Share My Life", "Am I Losing You", "Happiness", "You're My Life", "Goodbye Is The Saddest Word", "Everybody Has A Dream", and "Movin".

Easily one of the best albums ever cut by this oft-overlooked bop trumpeter – and a clean, clear, no-nonsense session played with some great modern touches! The session really steps off from McGhee's earlier work nicely – and is noteworthy not only for Howard's great trumpet work, but also for the presence of baritonist Sahib Shihab in the group, making a great small group appearance here and really dominating the session with his strong sound. Other players include Duke Jordan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – and titles include a good number of originals by McGhee. Tracks include "Tweedles", "Tahitian Lullaby", "Rifftide", "Oo Wee But I Do", "Transpicious", and "Don't Blame Me".

The title's an apt one, because after frustrations experienced working for Columbia and other labels, Mingus is finally allowed the freedom here to present his own ideas in all their unfettered glory – working with a bracingly tight quartet that features Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet and Ted Curson on trumpet! A number of the tracks here are familiar in their titles from other records, but the versions here stretch out far longer – moving past 10 minutes on 2 of the album's 4 tracks, and approaching that limit on others. But even more noticeable is the spareness of the sound – as the smaller group versions allow for a tremendous amount of solo space, really letting the focus fall on the two horn players, with the bass of Mingus and drums of Dannie Richmond shading in the space behind and beyond. Titles include "Folk Forms No. 1", "All the Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother", and the original uncensored version of "Faubus Fables".

An excellent CD reworking of the original Mobley hardbop classic, and one that restores a number of tracks that were originally recorded for the album's session, but which showed up on other Blue Note albums. The whole thing's got 8 cuts in all, some of which didn't appear on the orignal album, and all of which are killer modal hardbop numbers, of the sort that Mobley was perfecting during this key point in his career. Lee Morgan's on trumpet, and pianist Andrew Hill makes a rare "straight" appearance on the album. Titles include "Comin Back", "Me N You", "Syrup & Biscuits", "Carolyn", and the classic "No Room For Squares".

A totally massive set from One Way – a record that has them sounding even better than ever – drawing on all the strengths of the previous few records, and really knocking it out of the park! Although the group's got a great way with a groove, the mellow cuts here are equally nice – including the sublime title number, which begins the set as a sweet stepper – then lets the grooves pick up pace as things move on. Everything's nicely restrained – no overdone boogie modes, or too-funky rhythms that would usually show up on a set like this – and if anything, One Way should be given plenty of props for not just going for the dancefloor – and really coming up with a richly-voiced album like this! Titles include "Love Is", "My Lady", "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Push", "I Didn't Mean to Break Your Heart", and "All Over Again".

A stunner! High Plains Drifter collects material from the mighty Lee Perry during the crucially creative and fertile period between 1968 & 1973 – in which he founded the Upsetter imprint and had some chart success. It was such a productive period, resulting in hundreds of singles and a number of albums, that a whole bunch of incredible music made during it has been pretty badly overlooked over the years! This set on the always great Pressure Sounds puts together 20 of those – many of them simmering with quite a funky sound! Killer organ grooves and smoking rhythms highlight numbers by Val Bennett, The Mellowtones, The Ethiopians, Junior Byles and, of course, the amazing Upsetters! Glen Adams and Winston Wright handle those organs, sax by Tommy McCook, bass by Aston Barrett, trumpet by Bobby Ellis and other legendary instrumentalists, plus Lee Perry on percussion and production. Hard to go wrong with Rene & Angela at this point in their career – as they're super tight, always upbeat, and plenty darn soulful – no matter what the groove! The album's a perfect example of 80s groove at its best – a reworking of mainstream soul modes with a slight modern dancefloor touch – still never disco cliches, nor some of the too-poppy modes used by some of their contemporaries – and a blend that's always right on the money for the vocals of Angela Winbush to shine! Titles include the groover "Can't Give You Up", the mellow number "My First Love", and the cuts "Take Me To The Limit", "When It Comes To Love", "Bangin The Boogie", "Rise", and "Keep Runnin". Nice groovy instrumentals from one of the best little combos of the 60's. The record includes their big hit "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)", plus a number of other tracks that have a similar "TV commercial" feel – like "Chiquita Banana", "Pizza Parlor", "What's In the Bag, Goose", and the groovy "Sippin N Chippin".

This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s! A warm and wonderful tribute to the late, great Elis Regina – a special live performance that features some of her best songs ever, performed by a host of artists – including key contemporaries of Regina, and some important younger singers influenced by her music! The musical setting is great – inflected with all the best jazzy elements to rival Regina's best modes from the 70s – tight, but never too commercial – and done in just the right way to remind us why these singers are so wonderful. Incredible work from one of the greatest deep soul labels ever – the legendary Goldwax Records, a smaller company that languished in the shadows of Stax and Hi Records during their glory years! Like so many small labels in cities that were important to soul music, Goldwax seemed to have an amazing talent for picking up all the bits that Stax and Hi left behind – recording artists who were every bit as good as the bigger stars from Memphis, but who also seemed to benefit even more from the personal sound, and richer recording quality they got from the label. The most legendary figure to record for Goldwax was James Carr, and the work on this set follows very much in Carr's tradition – a deeply burning, extremely heartfelt approach to southern soul – one that even leaves some of the bigger names of the scene in the dust! The set features 24 tracks in all, including a number of unreleased tracks – and it's packaged with a great set of notes on this legendary imprint! An amazing look at the music of Leon Ware – one of our favorite soul artists of the 70s! A fantastic follow-up to the legendary Mutant Disco compilation on Ze Records – one that's newly put together by the revived label, but which features some of the company's best club cuts from the late 70s and early 80s! The "garage" in the title is a sly reference to the fact that Larry Levan's work at the Paradise Garage helped break some of the best Ze tunes on the New York scene – and overall, there's a definite early 80s downtown groove to the tracks on the package – a wonderful blend of post-disco and punk-funk elements, all served up with the usual Ze sense of style and whimsy! A classic slice of Jamaican roots! No collection of Lee Perry's work is complete without this chapter, which has been hard to get in spite of being reissued in a number of different formats. This version features a slight twist on the original cover art, but is an expanded double LP set with a bonus disc of later self-produced material. On the original album, recorded at the Black Ark in 1976, Cedric Mytton teams up with Roy Johnson on harmony vocals, with Lee Perry steering the Ark with a heavyweight supporting crew, for a true milestone in Jamaican music, and a classic of universal proportions. The legendary lost album by Stax/Volt female soul combo the Emotions – officially issued for the first time ever, with a wealth of bonus material! The Songs Of Innocence & Experience album was slated for release in 1972, and for whatever reason, the album didn't come out – leaving a number of the tracks to filter out as singles, and onto other LPs throughout the 70s – and still others to languish in the vaults until now! These cuts have more of a rootsy edge than their later disco era work, with all of those solid trio harmonies and catchy vocal hooks, and arrangements centered on drums, piano, bass and horns – but still with a very clean, lovely sound thanks to the indelible vocals! 23 tracks in all, including "Shouting Out Love", "Gee Whiz", "I Wanna Come Back", "Swearing Out A Warrant", "Baby I'm Through", "Put A Little Love Away", "Innocent", "Somebody Will If You Won't", "Ain't No Sunshine", "I Really Miss You" and lots more!

One of those records you hear and say "man, why wasn't this a classic?" – a tremendously well-conceived bit of British psychedelia from the end of the 60s, served up in a clear and focused style that holds up beautifully well over the years! There's a lean, no-nonsense quality here that really makes the record sparkle – a sense of a tune that makes each different number on the record come up with new delight – showing that The Fox were hardly just some happy accident in the studio, but a really great band that could've, should've gone onto much greater fame. But rather than ponder the might-haves in the group's career, let us just say that we're plenty darn happy to have this great LP – a real standout, even from a tremendous time in modern music – packaged here with great sound, notes on the group, and even a few bonus demo tracks! One of Aretha's sadly overlooked 70s gems – a great little session produced by Lamont Dozier, with a mix of smooth soul, driving rhythms, and just the right amount of rough edges to keep things real, very much in the tone of Lamont's own strong work for the ABC label at the same time. Lamont also wrote a fair number of the tunes – and titles include "Sunshine Will Never Be The Same", "Touch Me Up", "A Tender Touch", "No One Could Ever Love You More", and "When I Think About You".

Late 50s material by the incomparable Serge Gainsbourg – studio and live recordings from 1958 and 1959 – plus tunes from singer Juliette Greco's EP of Gainsbourg songs from the same period – really wonderful stuff all the way! A number of the tunes feature wonderful arrangements by Alain Goraguer, with Serge's earlier, less nicotine stained vocals a bit smoother, but no less charismatic. Titles include "Le Claqueur De Doights", "Mambo Miam Miam", "Indifferente", "L'Amour A La Papa". "La Jambe De Bois", "Agioisse". "La Licorne". "Tension Mambo" and more by Serge Gainsbourg, plus "Il Etait Eune Oie", "Les Amours Perdues", "Amour A La Papa", "Defense D'Afficher" and more by Juliette Greco.

A fantastic album by Slide Hampton – one of his best, and one of his rarest! Like a number of other important players of his generation, Slide got his start on the American scene, but moved to Europe during the 1960s – where he really began to open up. This excellent session was recorded in Paris in 1962, and it features Slide leading an octet through some of the most complicated arrangements of his early years. Players include some great underground American players, like trumpeter Richard Williams, bassist Butch Warren, tenorist George Coleman, and trombonist Benjamin Jacobs-El, whose frequent co-tromboning with Hampton always made for an excellent sound. As on Slide's Atlantic sides, the group swings like a mofo – staying tight on the choruses, but really breaking out from the pack with some amazing solo work. Titles include "Star Eyes", "Straight No Chaser", "Confirmation", "Exodus", and "A Moment's Notice".

2 late 60s sides by Groove Holmes – back to back on one CD! The Groover is a nice one from the days when Groove was playing with guitarist George Freeman! The core of the tracks on here feature a trio of Holmes, Freeman, and drummer Billy Jackson – and the trio knows how to cook nice and nicely, especially on the original cut "The Walrus", a groovy number written by Freeman, with his usual off-kilter approach. Other cuts include "My Scenery", "Blue Moon", and "I'll Remember April". That Healin Feelin is a tight, no-nonsense set of hard grooves featuring a quartet that includes Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, and Herbie Lovelle. There's a strong bottom sound to the session – picking up from the Misty days, when Groove learned that he could take just about any track, and make it groove like a mofo! Because of this, the album's selections – "That Healin Feelin", "Irene Court", "Castle Rock", and "On a Clear Day" – all sound night and tight, as Groove would have delivered the tunes playing before one of his many well-attended audiences at the time!
