new Jerome Richardson with Nicola ConteWay In Blues (Nicole Conte rmx)/Minor Flute (Panoptikum rmx) ... 12-inch
Cosmic Sounds (UK), 2003. Near Mint- (pic cover).... $5.99
The genius of Jerome Richardson – remixed! Richardson's funky flute and searing tenor work have appeared on some of our favorite jazz groove classics – both European and American – and here, two of his tunes are made by Nicola Conte and Panoptikum! Conte uses a host of extra musicians – vibes, piano, alto, and vocals – to expand Richardson's "Way In Blues" with an incredibly groovy and snapping sort of sound. Schema jazz meets the classic MPS groove – with incredible results! Panoptikum go for a more modern approach with "Minor Flute" – snapping the beats a bit more, but still allowing plenty of space for Richardson's wonderful work on flute!

Various — Nicola Conte Presents Viagem 4 – Lost Bossa & Samba Jazz Classics From The Swinging Brazilian 60s ... CD
Far Out (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $16.99
A fresh, breezy and brilliant compilation of rare Brazil – wonderful material from the early 60s through the end of the decade – the fourth in the Viagem series compiled by Nicola Conte, and it's the best yet! Viagem celebrates the jazzier side of 60s Brazil – bossa, samba and rawly rhythmic Afro-Brazilian grooves inspired by the best and freshest jazz of the US and European scenes. It's deep stuff, too – with a lot of great material we're hearing for the first time! We always expect the moon from Nicola Conte – whether it's his own modern, though classic jazz-inspired grooves – or in his role as a masterful, generous compiler. The man delivers every damn time! Includes "So Balanco" by 7 De Ouros, "Consolacao" by Myrzo Barroso, "Outra Vez" by Bossa Jazz 3, "Balumba" by Anilza Leoni, "Cute" by Bwana Trio, "Ponto De Vista" by As Compositoras, "Batucada Surgiu" by Marcos Moran, "Saudade Vem Correndo" by Bossa Nova + 5, "Te Quero Assim" by Rosana Tapajos, "Gusto Do Que E Bom" by Shirley E O Tuca Trio, "Pandeiro Triste" by Betinho Do Vibraphone and more. 17 tracks in all.

new Various — Spiritual Swingers – Presented By Nicola Conte – Deep Afrocentric Modal Jazz ... CD
Universal (Germany), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spirit, swing, and a whole lot more – a mighty collection of music all hand-picked by the legendary Nicola Conte! There's a deeply soulful groove to the whole thing – and a touch of the exotic as well – and the package really reminds us a lot of the great Gilles Peterson Universal collections that were out a few years back – full of deep tones and rich colors, and proof that when you've got the right guy at the helm, a collection of older jazz tracks can be way more than just the sum of its parts! In addition to Universal label work – originally issued on Decca, Emarcy, and other labels – the package features some Fantasy/Prestige tracks too – including some great gems we might have missed otherwise. Almost 75 minutes of music – with titles that include "Taboo" by Dorothy Ashby, "New Delhi" by James Clay, "Big P" by New Jazz Orchestra, "Juan-Les-Pins" by Staffan Abeleen, "Subo" by Klaus Weiss, "Spanish Castles" by George Gruntz, "Modette" by Roy Haynes, "My Favorite Things" by Sound Of Feeling, "Jungle Fantasy" by Yusef Lateef, "Feeling Good" by Pat Bowie, "The Hooter" by Ernie Wilkins, "Afro Blue" by Abbey Lincoln, "Bogota" by Ahmad Jamal, and "Baltimore Oriole" by Lorez Alexandria.

new Nicola ConteJet Sounds (full LP) ... LP
Schema/Fez (Italy), 2000. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Wonderful wonderful wonderful – and one of the best albums we've ever heard of modern bossa and soundtrack grooves! For years, Nicola Conte has been a seminal force in the new Italian scene – working as a DJ, promoter, producer, and sometimes recording artist under the odd 12" single. This album marks his first full effort – and after years of bubbling under in the Italian scene, Nicola emerges as one of the most perfect-formed artists we've heard in years. The whole album's a breathtaking mix of 60s bossa, soundtrack, and easy themes – put together with never a dull moment, and always a focus on the kind of mid and uptempo grooves that have been pushing the Italian and German scenes for the last 5 years. The record features great mixes from a few of Nicola's 12" singles, plus a wealth of excellent new material that really expands his groove wonderfully – with a totally real, totally honest sound that pushes past the gazillion retro remix throwaway albums that you'll find stuffing the listening stations at the megastores! Tracks include "Il Cerchio Rosso", "Dossier Omega", "Trappola Mortale", "Jazz Pour Dadine", and "Bossa Per Due".

new Nicola ConteOther Directions ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2004. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". Imagine the best work of Schema or Compost done in an all-organic, all-natural mode – and you've got the beautiful sound of this set!
(Very unique package, too – like getting 2 classic Blue Note albums together at once!)

new Nicola ConteRituals ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2008. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A sublime album through and through – and another essential slice of work from the legendary Nicola Conte! Conte's only given us a few full length sets under his own name, but they've all been amazing, and this album's no exception – a record that mostly features live jazz instrumentation, turned towards some of the groove-heavy modes that Conte forged from his earliest sides on Schema Records – a style that was clubjazz before anyone was using that tag, but which also has done plenty to revive a huge range of classic modes from decades past! The record's got echoes of bossa, modal jazz, and more – served up by combos with players that include Timo Lassy on sax and flute, Fabrizio Bosso and Till Bronner on trumpets, Pietro Lussu on piano, and Conte himself on guitar. Vocals are by Alice Ricciardi, Jose James, Chiara Civello, and Kim Sanders – and the album's got an even deeper feel than Conte's previous album on Blue Note. Tracks include "Karma Flower", "I See All Shades Of You", "Black Is The Graceful Veil", "Caravan", "Rituals", "Macedonia", "The Nubian Queens", and "Like Leaves In The Wind".

new Nicola ConteJet Sounds Revisited (2 x 10 inch LPs) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2002. New Copy 2 x 10" .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
The genius of Nicola Conte gets the remix treatment – in this wonderful new album that steps off heavily from his massive Jet Sounds set of a few years ago! If you know know Nicola, he's the wunderkind behind the Schema label – and, probably more than anyone in the world right now, one of the few producer/musicians who can really handle a retro-sounding groove. Conte's steeped in classic jazz, soundtracks, and bossa nova – all of which come into play in his music – and this set has him working with a host of able talents who help to take his unique creative vision even farther than before! This double 10" package is totally cool – with a total of 5 tracks from the full LP, laid out over double DJ-friendly vinyl. Each track takes on a whole new life, as lots of new elements are added to the music, and most of the tracks are almost completely remade – and titles include "Jazz Pour Dadine" remixed by The Dining Rooms, "Arabesque" done by Micatone, "Forma 2000" reformed by Les Gammas, "Dossier Omega" redone by Espen Horne, and "Trappola Mortale (traffic replay) done anew by The Freeform Arkestra.

new Nicola Conte & Others — Modern Sound Of Nicola Conte – Versions In Jazz-Dub ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A long-overdue collection of all the mixes, side-projects, and rare "Nicola Conte version" tracks that have cropped up in the past decade or so – work that's every bit as great as the material Conte includes on his own albums and singles! Nicola Conte's not a remixer – he's a re-imaginer – and when he sets out to serve up his own version of a track, he often starts from scratch – using his own band, his own arrangements, and his own key elements – all of which turn any projects for other artists into grooves that are very Conte-directed – the kind of classic jazz-infused gems that Nicola's been laying down on his own Schema Records label for over a decade! This double-disc set is filled with amazing work that Conte's done for other folks – and it also include a few rare and unreleased tracks under his own name as well – a massive helping of music that's really mindblowing throughout – sure to please any fan of Nicola, as well as anyone who digs the artists included in the package. Nicola Conte tracks include "Castles In The Rain", "Charade", "New Blues", "When I Wish Upon A Star", "Solo", "Black Is The Graceful Veil (acoustic version)", "Groovy Samba", and "All Or Nothing At All", which features vocals by Jose James! Other cuts include Conte mixes and reworks of "Stolen Moments (Midnight Mood rework)" by Mark Murphy, "Yellow Daisies" by Fertile Ground, "So Danco Samba (Nicola Conte rework)" by Til Bronner, "Terra De Ninguem" by Sabrina Malheiros, "Take Off (Campi's Idea version)" by Marco Di Marco, "3 Corners (For Friends & Relatives version)" by Five Corners Quintet, "You Are" by Povo, "Our Love" by Luisito Quintero, "Healing Blue (shape of jazz to come version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Lotus Sun" by Maki Mannami, "Heaven (west coast vibes rmx)" by Bitter:Sweet, "Quiet Nights (out of the cool version)" by Re:Jazz, "Elevated States" by Thunderball, "Mood Indigo" by Akiko, "Take Five (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Roberto Roena, and "Kerma Elastica (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Bobby Hughes Combination.

new Nicola Conte & Gianluca Petrella — New Standards/Tema Per Hi-Fi ... 12-inch
Schema (Italy), 2001. New Copy (pic cover).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Genius work from one of our favorite artists! Both tracks sparkle with the kind of retro-jazzy intensity that we've come to expect after Conte's brilliant Jet Sounds LP – a perfect blend of classic bossa grooves and modern dancefloor production, in a mode that blows away all the competition! "New Standards" has a strong bassy bossa beat – with a warmly lyrical trumpet solo over the top, sweet soulful, and very well played! "Tema Per Hi-Fi" has some great vibes and piano – grooving away in a mode that feels like it was lifted from some classic Quincy Jones soundtrack on Mercury!

Balanco — Bossa & Balanco ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1997. New Copy .... $9.99
Mindblowing work from the early years of Schema Records – a set that really helped set a whole new tone for a generation – and which still sounds wonderful all these many hears later! Balanco work up a perfect blend of bossa rhythms and soulful jazz – all wrapped up with the kind of slinky, sexy vibe the Italian scene first perfected back in the 60s – when they were borrowing lots of Brazilian elements for their best soundtracks! Balanco's sound here really recalls those glory days – mixing together sweet female vocals, lively bossa rhythms, and great work on Fender Rhodes – all under the guidance of Nicola Conte, who manages to make everything sound beautiful together. Highlights include versions of Morricone's "Metti Una Sera A Cena" and the classic "Cinnamon & Clove" – and the vinyl version features 4 more tracks, "Balanco", "Fantasia", "Aguadream", and "Blue Skat Samba".

Rosalia De Souza — Brasil Precisa Balancar ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy 2LP .... $15.99
The best work so far from Rosalia De Souza – a session that features production and guitar from bossa legend Roberto Menescal, and a sound that's deeper and even more classic than any of Rosalia's other work! Most of the instrumentation here is in an older acoustic mode – piano, percussion, and horns arranged by Menescal with that beautifully lighter than air style that he first pioneered in the 60s – an approach that lets Rosalia's vocals drift along on wonderfully gentle rhythms, and dominate the record even more than before. Given that the set's on Schema, there's still a nicely rhythmic component to most numbers – but overall, the record's a bold step forward even for the label – similar to the all-acoustic move made by Nicola Conte in his own recordings! Marcos Valle joins in on vocals on "Que Bandeira", and other tunes include "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", "Voz Da Lapa", "Jogo De Roda", "Rio De Janeiro", "Mar Amar", "Um Novo Dia", and "Vivo Sonhando".

Gerardo Frisina — Notebook – A Journey In Sound – The Remixes ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2007. New Copy .... $16.99
Remixes and rare tracks from the mighty Gerardo Frisina – easily our second favorite Italian groover next to the mighty Nicola Conte! The set's a great counterpart to some of Frisina's other full albums on Schema – because it not only presents a few previously unreleased tracks, it also offers up some of Gerardo's great remix work for other artists in recent years! Frisina's got a great way of imbuing a current track with a classic Latin vibe – mixing acoustic percussion, driving rhythms, and jazz-based instrumentation together with incredible sharpness and energy – a no-nonsense approach to a groove that shows that's almost a distillation of the best older elements. This approach is heard wonderfully on Gerardo's own tracks "Tokyo's Dream (07 version)", "Alborado", "Es Diferente", "Calle De Candela (vibes version)", and "Zanja" – but it also comes through on remix tracks that include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac (G Call remix)" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Dis-ka-ndombe" by Jorge Graf, "Black Forrest Stomp" by Hipnosis, "Windly Coast" by Idea 6, "Guarapiranga" by Toco, "Stardust From Tomorrow (dissociated mood version)" by Sun Ra, and "Ghetto Stomp" by Combo Moderna.

new Sergio Mendes — Bom Tempo Brasil – Sergio Mendes Remixed ... CD
Concord, 2010. New Copy .... $3.99 18.99
Remixed cuts from Sergio Mendes' Bom Tempo album – a record that's already pretty strongly pointed at the dancefloor, making it a perfect fit for a project like this! Many of the tracks here are very heavily remixed – using only key hooks and vocal elements from the originals, much in the style of the Verve Remixed series – although a few of our favorite mixes here keep more of the core flavor intact, or even bring something new and rich to the table. Perhaps the best cut in this way, is the great Nicola Conte Zona Sul Version of "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" – which is a warm bossa number that could almost come from Conte's own Schema Records. The set also features some remixes of cuts that weren't even on the original Bom Tempo record – and tracks include "Pais Tropical (Roger Sanchez release yourself mix)", "Magalenha (Moto Bianco rmx)", "Orpheus (Funk Generation mix)", "Ye Me Le (Chuckle rmx)", "Maracatu Atomico (Paul Oakenfold club mix)", "You & I (Cutmore rmx)", "Mas Que Nada (Nervo rmx)", and "The Real Thing (Bimbo Jones rmx)".

Gaetano Partipilo — Besides – Songs From The Sixties ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2013. New Copy .... $19.99
Just a few of the songs here are from the 60s, and many of the rest are written by Gaetano Partipilo himself – and mixed with a few Brazilian numbers as well – all to round out a wonderfully rich sounding album that really lives up to the best Schema tradition! Instrumentation is mostly live jazz – played by Gaetano on alto sax, as well as Nicola Conte on guitar, Pietro Lusso on Fender Rhodes, Pasquale Bardaro on vibes, and Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet – but maybe best of all are the vocals, which shift a bit over the course of the record, and include raspy soul lines from MR Natural, and warmer female vocals from Alice Ricciardi, Heidi Vogel, and Rosalia De Souza. Half the tracks are instrumentals, and the mix of modes really makes the album great – never settled too far into one comfortable corner, and really taking the listener on a great journey overall! Titles include "Essa Mulher", "Se Voce Pensa", "Beyond The Days", "Jive Samba", "Right Now", "13 Death March", "Wall & Water", "Atras Da Porta", "The Sticks", "Moon Flower", and "Ocean Dance".

new Gerardo Frisina — Join The Dance ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2010. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Modal brilliance from Gerardo Frisina – possibly his greatest album ever, and a set that really shows his true transformation into a jazzman! The set's got a wide range of acoustic jazz instrumentation played live, and features none of the rhythm programs you might get on earlier Frisina records – a shift that has him moving in the same classic jazz space as labelmate Nicola Conte! As with Conte's recent records, there's a warmth and soul here that's undeniable – a feel that wraps up 50s Blue Note, 60s Italian jazz, and 70s MPS with ease – delivering something new and fresh for a younger generation in the process. Core instrumentation includes vibes, piano, tenor, flute, and trombone – and the set features guest vocals by Norma Winstone on one track, and Francesca Sortino on another. All other titles are instrumental, and tunes include "Titoro", "Joy Shout", "Will You Walk A Little Faster", "Tata Somba", "Mille E Una Notte", "High Hat", "Bubbly", and "Another Waltz".

Blue Note (Holland), 1960s/1970s/2005. New Copy 2 CDs .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
If there's anyone we'd trust with a trip through the Blue Note catalog, it's Jazzanova – as the group have been a key force in the jazz-inspired sound of the global dancefloor for many years! This set's the 4th in Blue Note's "Trip" series – and it may well be the best, as Jazzanova really know their way around a groove – and manage to get way past the obvious in their selection of tracks from the Blue Note catalog of the 60s and 70s. The hits are pushed aside for some lesser-known gems that stretch out with a wonderfully fluid approach to a jazzy groove – mixing together fusion, Latin, and soul jazz influences with ease – all in a double-length set of tracks that features one mixed batch on each CD! 2CD version features the tracks "You Make Me Feel So Good" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Yu Yo" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Afreaka" by Lee Morgan, "Beatrice" by Sam Rivers, "A Time For Spring" by Nicola Conte, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Congalegra" by Horace Parlan, "Song Of Will" by Eddie Gale, "Hello To The Wind" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Morning Side Of Love" by Chico Hamilton, "Sitting Here All Alone" by Waters, "Quantrale" by Curtis Fuller, and "Baltimore Oriole" by Sheila Jordan.

new Pietro Lussu Trio — Northern Lights ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2011. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A trio set by the pianist from Nicola Conte's group – and a wicked little record that both lives up to his previous efforts, and has us hearing Pietro in a whole new light as well! There's a bold rhythmic pulse to most of the numbers here – energy that's totally great – and which seems to come as much from Lussu's touch on the piano as it does the bass and drums – which are almost used equally, and wrapped up together – sort of in the manner of Robert Glasper's best music in recent years! Lussu plays both piano and Fender Rhodes – and other group members include Vincenzo Florio on bass and Marco Valeri on drums. Titles include "Freak E", "Dakota Song", "Afro-Centric", "She Knows The Ropes", and "Northern Lights".

Foreign Exchange — Dear Friends: An Evening With The Foreign Exchange (CD & DVD) ... CD
Foreign Exchange, 2011. Used CD & DVD .... $15.99
A double disc CD & DVD package showcasing one of our favorite souful acts on the contemporary landscape – Nicolay & Phonte's brilliant and ever-evolving Foreign Exchange project! Dear Friends showcases an acoustic concert performed for a private audience –- the great touring lineup that includes Zo!, Sy Smith, and singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly. From the get go, we've been impressed by both the original songwriting from Foreign Exchange as well as the way they filter diverse influences into their own unique vibe – and this acoustic setting really gets to the heart and soul of it. This is an essential document for fans of the group, but it's also a fine intro if you're just now coming aboard! The live set includes "Fight For Love", "All Roads", "Take Off The Blues", "Lose Your Way", "Greatest Weapon Of All Time", a nice cover of James Taylor's "Something In The Way She Moves", "Laughing At Your Plans", "Daykeeper", "House Of Cards", Zo!'s "Greatest Weapon Of All Time" and "I Wanna Know". Vittorio Sicbaldi Four Mour Quintet — Way ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2009. New Copy .... $22.99
A really classic-styled set – as you might guess from the Art Blakey homage image on the front cover – a cracker of a session that features some great players from the contemporary Italian scene! There's a bold hardbop vibe to the whole thing – a mode that hangs right up there in the best Blue Note modern mode of the late 50s – no surprise, given the set list, which includes compositions by Sonny Clark, Art Pepper, Eric Dolphy, and Frank Rosolino! Things swing straight overall, but there's a really nice edge to the record – thanks to the work of horn players Danilo Pala on alto and Andy Gravish on trumpet – both musicians we've never really heard before, but who come together beautifully – especially Gravish, whose edgey alto would definitely make Dolphy proud. Other group members include Luca Mannutza on piano, Nicola Muresu on bass, and leader Vittorio Sicbaldi on drums – and titles include "Melody For C", "Candy", "Arrivin Soon", "Bijou The Poodle", "Sorino", "Sad Eyes", and "Blue Daniel".
