Great earlier stuff from Natalie Cole – actually her third great album in a row – a tremendous early creative and commerical winning streak for Natalie! Thankful has her sweet, soulful voice out from of prodcution by Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy of the Independents, and they give her a nice jazzy sound that made the record one of her best of the 70s. Richard Evans and Gene Barge arranged, which probably had something to do with that, too – but Natalie truly deserves most of the credit of the strength of this set. It includes the standout groovers "La Costa" and"Annie Mae", but the whole record is really sweet – with "Lovers", "Our Love", "Be Thankful", "Just Can't Stay Away" and "Keeping A Light".

A triple pack of early magic from Natalie Cole! Inseparable is Natalie's stunning debut for Capitol Records in the mid 70s – a real surprise, and a set that should have had the singer blossoming even more than she did at the time! As with some of the other Capitol soul sessions of the time, the album's done very firmly under the guidance of Charles Jackson and Marvin Yancey – a pair who give Natalie just the right sort of backing to launch her career – a sound that's full and rich, deeply sophisticated – but also still plenty soulful, almost in the mode of some of Minnie Riperton's work at the time. Given the pair's Chicago roots – and the arrangement help from Richard Evans – that comparison is no surprise, and Natalie rises to the occasion nicely. Titles are all originals too – and include "Needing You", "Joey", "I Can't Say No", "Something For Nothing", "I Love Him So Much", "You", "Your Face Stays On My Mind", and the huge hit "This Will Be". Next up is Natalie – a record that really has Natalie Cole finding her groove – not needing any help from her famous familial legacy, thank you – and instead stepping out with a tight, proud mode that really helped refine the sound of female soul in the 70s! The album's got plenty of influences from the Chicago soul scene – including songwriting and production from the team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy – and work from key session players like Richard Evans and Gene Barge, who worked in the Curtom Studios to craft the grooves on the set! Titles include "Keep Smiling", "Mr. Melody", "Heaven Is With You", "Can We Get Together", "Touch Me", "Hard To Get Along", and "Good Morning Heartache". Unpredictable is an album that reunites Natalie Cole with the smooth soul team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancey – the team who did such a great job with Natalie's Capitol debut, and who really continue the groove here too! The album's got a rock-solid approach through and through – a quality that has Natalie really standing out on her own as a positive young artist in soul – without any need to nod towards her father, as in later years. And Jackson and Yancey bring a nice dose of Chicago soul class to the affair – which turns out to be a perfect match for Natalie's vocals! Titles include "Be Mine Tonight", "Party Lights", "This Heart", "I've Got Love On My Mind", and "Still In Love".

Heavy ballads from Peabo Bryson – a perfect sampling of the style he did so well back in the day, including a few of his famous duets with Roberta Flack and Natalie Cole as well! The set's overflowing with mellow jams from Peabo – the kind of laidback numbers that really helped him lock in his style, and help define a whole new level of maturity for the male voice in soul music. Titles include "What You Won't Do For Love", "Feel The Fire", "I'm So Into You", "Tonight I Celebrate My Love", "All My Love", "Show & Tell", "She's A Woman", "You're Looking Like Love To Me", and "Reaching For The Sky".

A pair of overlooked gems from Ronnie Dyson – both of which show there's way more to love than just his early hits! On Love In All Flavors, Ronnie's older than during his falsetto soul early years – and he's working here with some impeccably mature Chicago soul arrangements by Gene Barge, Gene Page, and Richard Evans. The album's produced by the always-great modern soul dynamic duo of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancey (ex-Independents), and it's got an approach that mixes deeply soulful vocals with smoother backings, kind of in the same mode that The Manhattans were using, but with a bit more of a modern tip that points towards the Capitol work by the Jackson/Yancey team. Tracks include "I Want To Be Where You Are", "Sara Smile", "Don't Be Afraid", "I Just Want To Be There", and "Ain't Nothing Wrong". On More You Do It, Dyson works with the 70s hit soul team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy – the pair who brought great sound to Natalie Cole, and who work some similar magic with Ronnie! The album was recorded in Chicago – partially at Curtom – and has arrangements from Gene Barge, Gene Page, and Richard Evans – all of whom bring a fullness to the record that's a nice change from Dyson's more fragile work of earlier years. Some of the best cuts have a gentle midtempo groove that's almost like Leroy Hutson – warm, and never slick – very personal, and stepping along nicely. Titles include "The More You Do It", "You & Me", "Jive Talkin", "Close To You", "Love Won't Let Me Wait", and "Lovin Feelin".

A tremendous sophomore set from Donna Washington – working perfectly here in the hands of Capitol soul maestro Chuck Jackson! Jackson's touch is wonderful here – just the right blend of cool and class, groove and grace that he brought to some of the label's best at the time – including Natalie Cole! And like Cole, Washington's got a hell of a great voice when someone points it in the right direction – which it definitely is here, in a blend of warm mellow groovers and a few more upbeat tracks – numbers that push Donna into an 80s groove mode and avoid any of the clunky disco cliches that another producer might have tried. The balance is wonderful – and carried off by a range of top-shelf studio players like Patrice Rushen on keyboards and Ndugu Chancler on drums – on titles that include "I See Home", "Scuse Me While I Fall In Love", "I Want You Tonight", "Share Your Love With Me", and "Going For The Glow". CD also features a bonus track – "Scuse Me While I Fall In Love (single mix)".

Smooth and soulful club from the mighty Capitol Records – one of the few major labels to really understand a groove at the end of the 70s! The 2CD package is a wonderful tribute to the hipper soul coming out of Capitol at the time – a set that features some hits, some album tracks, and a fair bit of rarities that we've never seen on CD before – some lesser-known club cuts that sit beautifully here next to the bigger names in the collection. But big or small, the artists here are all pretty darn great – much more soul artists heading for the clubs in the late 70s than quickie disco acts just looking for a buck. Brother of Jesse Jackson, ex-lead of The Independents, Chuck Jackson moved on as a solo act at Capitol when he and Marvin Yancey (also ex-Independents) started working with the label as producers for Natalie Cole. The pair handled some of Cole's best work of the 70s, and Jackson hits a similar sophisticated style on this solo album from 1978. Production's by Yancey and Gene Barge –and Yancey also wrote most of the cuts with Jackson. Good lost late 70's Chicago soul, with the tracks "Love Of You", "I Really Want You", "Passionate Breezes", and a remake of "Ooh Child". Great Capitol modern soul from Charles Jackson – stepping out here in his role as a solo artist after early fame with The Independents! Although Jackson himself was becoming a key force in production and songwriting for other Capitol artists (most notably Natalie Cole), this second set for the label has Chuck working with Gavin Christopher in a warm west coast groove. Christopher produced and wrote a good number of the tracks on the set – and Jackson's style here is a bit more bouncy and buoyant than before – not really 80s groove, but sliding into a slightly more uptempo mode. Titles include "At The Party", "I'm Gonna Get Your Love", "I Finally Found My Love", "I'm Through With You", "I Love You Only", and "Just For Your Lovin".

An all-star tribute to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald – one that features a number of contemporary singers trying to recapture the magic of Ella's best work from the 50s and 60s! We'll be honest in saying that we were a bit suspicious of this one at first, but the quality is surprisingly strong – mostly in an acoustic, swinging, jazzy mode – with arrangements predominantly by Rob Mounsey, and most singers really doing their best to hit a Fitgerald sort of groove. It's interesting to hear some of these vocalists doing their best to match Ella's phrasing, on titles that include "Blues In The Night" by Ledisi, "The Lady Is A Tramp" by Queen Latifah, "A Tisket A Tasket" by Natalie Cole, "Lullaby Of Birdland" by Chaka Khan, "Angel Eyes" by KD Lang, "Reaching For The Moon" by Lizz Wright, "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Gladys Knight, "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me" by Etta James, and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Ella Fitzgerald & Stevie Wonder.

An all-star effort from Sergio Mendes – one that follows nicely on the comeback energy of his previous Timeless set! Like that one, this album has Mendes dipping heavily into contemporary soul modes – picking up a bit of R&B, bits of hip hop, and bits of a few other styles – then folding them back into music from his Brazilian roots! The blend is almost a 21st Century update of the mix of soul and bossa that Sergio forged in the 70s after his initial Brasil 66 work on these shorts – and the balance struck here is surprisingly strong – possibly even better than the sound of Timeless. Guests include Will I Am, Siedah Garrett, Ledisi, Carlinhos Brown, Vanessa Da Mata, Gracinha Leporace, Natalie Cole, and Lani Hall – and titles include "Catavento", "Morning In Rio", "The Look Of Love", "Dreamer", "Lugar Comum", "Odo-Ya", "Waters Of March", and "Funky Bahia".
