An easy going set of tunes from Ramsey – still going quite strong after all these years, and getting some vocal help from Nancy Wilson on a number of tunes! The format is surprisingly lean, clean, and simple – with most tracks played by a small combo that features Ramsey on acoustic piano, plus supporting keyboards, guitar, and a bit of horns. There's a great cover of "Slippin Into Darkness" that takes the tune to places that Ramsey didn't reach in the 70s, and Nancy joins in on the titles "All This Love", "Give Me Something Real", "In The Name Of Love", and "Lost Up In Loving You". Other titles include "Ooh Child", "In My Life", and "One True Thing".

The record has her working with arrangements and production by Gene and Billy Page – who give the record a great smooth 70s soul finish, and a feel that's a lot more unified than some of her other efforts from the decade. Nancy sings some great versions of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" and "Come Get To This", plus the original tracks "Houdini Of The Midnight Hour", "Like A Circle Never Stops", "Boogeyin All The Way", and "Happy Tears".

A sweet set of soulful numbers from Nancy Wilson – tracks that offer up a perfect fusion of her jazzy roots and soul-based styles of later years – wrapped up in lush arrangements from Japanese jazzman Masahiko Satoh! The record follows a similar approach to Wilson's Keep You Satisfied session – which Satoh also handled – and offers up a great format for the maturing Nancy to keep on burning with the mature, sophisticated sound she first brought to music during her 60s years at Capitol – yet with a definite 80s twist here. A pair of stunners from Nancy Wilson – back to back in a single set! Music On My Mind is an overlooked gem from Wilson's excellent 70s run on Capitol Records – a set that goes way beyond the spirit of some of her earlier records, and features a very unified vibe overall! The set was done in heavy collaboration with producer/composer Clarence McDonald – and features all original album penned for the date, most of which has a sublime blend of strings and soul that really pushes Wilson into even more sophisticated territory than before! Nancy's really on a par here with Marlena Shaw at her 70s best – even though Wilson had hit some of the territory years before – and the set's overflowing with great little numbers – including the funky classic "I'm In Love", plus "Let It Flow", "I'm Gonna Let Ya", "Music On My Mind", "He Makes Me Feel Good About Myself", and "Light". Life Love & Harmony is a killer from Nancy – very different than most of her earlier work, and proof that she was still growing as an artist on Capitol! The record's arranged and produced by Larry Farrow – who gives the session a jazz funk feel that brings Nancy into a whole mode, a smooth modern one that's kind a perfect fit for the rich character of her vocals – a much-needed update of the classy sound of her late 60s work, in territory that still shows that Wilson can hit this sort of groove better than anyone else! The standout cut is the massive "Sunshine" –a sparkling jazzy groover with a monster hook and some wonderful stepping arrangements – and other tracks include "You're The One Wrapped Up In The Comfort Of Your Love", "Heaven", "Here's To Us", and "Life, Love, & Harmony". CD also features bonus single mixes of "Sunshine" and "Life Love & Harmony".

The setting is nice and laidback – a live date with a core combo that features Joe Henderson on tenor, Chick Corea on piano, Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass, and Lenny White on drums – plus steller vocals from Wilson, who's really at home in the setting – stretching out beautifully on the long tracks, and coming into play with the soloists at a level that's quite different from her more polished studio records. Clarke's bass is a delight, too – a great reminder that his talents didn't always lie in the electric realm during the 80s – and Henderson, as you might guess, provides some soulful undercurrents that reallyg round the whole proceedings. Titles include "500 Miles High", "Round Midnight", "Rhythm A Ning", "My One & Only Love", "Them There Eyes", and "I Want To Be Happy".

A pair of great Nancy Wilson albums from the mid 70s in a single set! All In Love Is Far is a sophisticated album of soul tracks arranged and produced by Gene Page, in a string-heavy, slightly-funky style that reminds us of Gene's work with Barry White at the time. The tracks are all pretty hip – and include titles written by Stevie Wonder, Johnny Guitar Watson, Thom Bell & Linda Creed, Billy Page, and Tennyson Stevens. No standout singles, but plenty of nice moments, and a good side of Nancy's career that isn't always given that much exposure. Titles include "Tell The Truth", "Try It, You'll Like It", "All In Love Is Fair", "There'll Always Be Forever", and "You're As Right As Rain". Come Get To This is a real sweet soul gem from '75. One of the greatest Nancy Wilson albums of the 60s – a small combo jazz date, done with a style that's different than some of Wilson's larger sessions of the time! The group has a relaxed, easygoing feel – and Wilson slides in with a style that's a lot more laidback and subtle than on other Capitol dates – almost the mellow feel of a late 50s Dakota Staton date, but still song with all the careful class that Nancy brings to her vocals! The group's a quartet, led by pianist Hank Jones – and featuring Gene Bertoncini on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – on titles that include "Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe", "Do it Again", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Supper Time", and "I Thought About You".

Overlooked genius from Nancy Wilson – a pair of gems, back to back on a single CD! Can't Take My Eyes Off You is a really great album from Nancy Wilson – a set that still has her working with the jazzy undercurrents of her best 60s work for Capitol Records – yet also moving into some hipper, more sophisticated soul styles too! There's a really strong adult vibe to the record – not that Nancy didn't have one before, but this time around there's even more sense of personality and experiential depth that really comes through in the choice of songs – and in Wilson's wonderful treatment of them. Tunes that might be stiff in the hands of someone else are really transformed here – with added thanks to Phil Wright for great arrangements on the record. Titles include a version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne", Burt Bacharach's obscure "Waitin For Charlie To Come Home", and the tracks "Trip With Me", "This Girl Is A Woman Now", "Mixed Up Girl", and "Words & Music". Now I'm A Woman is a really unique moment for Nancy – one in which she leaves the LA sound behind, and gets some special treatment from the young Philly crew of the Gamble & Huff studios! Arrangements on the set are by Thom Bell, Lenny Pakula, and Bobby Martin – and the style's an interesting mix of Nancy's pop jazz vocals with some of the lighter, sweeter sounds of the Philly scene at the start of the 70s. The result is a surprisingly wonderful album – quite different for Nancy, and with the kind of backings that really break her out of the sound of the 60s – and pave the way for the sophisticated style of the 70s. Titles include "Now I'm A Woman", "Let's Fall In Love All Over", "Lonely Lonely", "Joe", "How Many Broken Wings", and "The Real Me". CD features three bonus tracks – "Go Away & Find Yourself", "When You're Alone", and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me".

Nancy sings a nice set of sophisticated jazz and pop tunes, with arrangements from the hands of Billy May, Olver Nelson, and Sid Feller. There's a bit less of a swing than on other albums, but Nancy's fragile and soulful voice comes through loud and clear – and the track list includes some nice lesser-known material like "River Shallow", "Free Again", "Only The Young", "The Right To Love", and "Over The Weekend".

The Sound Of Nancy Wilson is mighty darn groovy – a wonderful blend of upbeat late 60s modes, and some of the more compressed class of her earlier years! Arrangements are by Jimmy Jones, who finds just the right balance of jazz and soul to work perfectly with Wilson – so that when things are bouncy and swinging, she's got the punch to beat all the younger soul singers who were copping her game at the time – and when they're mellow, she shows that she can still blow anyone else out of the water on a sad-tinged ballad! Familiar tunes are reworked wonderfully by Jones – who definitely gives them all the sound of Nancy here – and titles include the righteous "Black Is Beautiful", plus "Below Above", "The Rules Of The Road", "Peace Of Mind", "The Other Side Of The Tracks", "It Only Takes A Moment", "Alone With My Thoughts Of You", and "This Bitter Earth". Nancy is a self-titled set from Nancy Wilson – and a record that definitely lives up to everything the Nancy name meant at the end of the 60s! The album's got a depth that can take on comers from all corners – enough class and sophistication to match the modes of Marlena Shaw or Dionne Warwick, but also enough punch to tackle the heavier soul styles of singers like Aretha Franklin or Fontella Bass – thanks to some heavier groovers on the package! There's loads of fresh numbers on the record – many given a great blast of jazz and soul by arranger Jimmy Jones – and titles include "Prisoner Of My Eyes", "Looking Back", "You'd Better Go", "What Do You See In Her", "We Could Learn Together", and "Player Play On".

Nancy Wilson turns her wonderfully sophisticated vocal style towards a batch of hits from Hollywood films of the 40s, 50s, and 60s – arranged and conducted by Jimmy Jones, in that classy blend of jazz and soul that suited Wilson so well in the 60s! The style is really a cut above the usual – handled with great poise by Nancy throughout, but also done in a mode that's relaxed enough to get past some of the stodgier sounds of records like this. The mellower tunes are actually some of the best here – personal, reflective, and echoing the "Guess Who I Saw Today" sound of Wilson in the 60s. Titles include "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Almost In Your Arms", "When Did You Leave Heaven?", "My Shining Hour", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Wild Is The Wind".

One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by pianist Ronnell Bright – a player best known for his accompaniment behind famous vocalists, like Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson! This rare date was cut in Paris – at a time when Bright was visiting the city with Vaughan – and it's a stripped-down trio date with a nicely relaxed feel – one that has Bright really opening up on the keys, in ways you don't always hear on his material with singers. Other players in the trio include Richard Davis on bass and Art Morgan on drums – and titles include "Johnnie Pate's Blues", "Sail Em", "Doxology", "Chasing Sarah", and "R&R Groove".

One of the more obscure chapters in David Axelrod's years at Capitol – a record featuring comeback vocals from singer Ann Dee – a talent from earlier years, getting a bit of an update here from Ernie Freeman on arrangements and Axelrod on production. There's no standout funky numbers, but Axe's production gives the record a nice degree of space that pushes it pas the usual pop styles of the time – kind of in the realm of some of Nancy Wilson's more sophisticated sides. Titles include "Woman In A Man's World", "Free Again", "The Look Of Love", "The Sun In My Life", and "Your Zowie Face".

Some very nice pop soul tracks by this lovely vocalist from the 60s! The record features a core group of backing by the Ronnie Brown trio, plus some larger arrangements by Lincoln Mayorga. The sound is nice and soulful, with a bit of a jazzy touch – in the manner of some of Nancy Wilson's work at Capitol. Includes a cover of Percy Sledge's big hit, with the gender reversed as in the title, plus the tracks "It Hurts So Bad", "Nice & Easy", "Are You Ready For A Woman", and "Till The End Of Time".

A nicely done compilation of pivotal work from the great Ramsey Lewis – focusing on his work for Columbia/CBS Records from the 70s and early 80s – and very well chosen at that! Of course the title comes from Ramsey's iconic album of the same name, and this 2CD set features a few tracks from that one, but it's also got numbers from Tequila Mockingbird, Ramsey, Three Piece Suite, Love Notes and other great records, plus choice live work, his album with Nancy Wilson and other standouts. It kind of focuses on the sunny electric jazz and fusiony soul groovers, and Jazz FM does a great job with the selections! 32 tracks on 2CDs: "Spring High", "Caring For You", "Tambura, "So Much More", "Lynn (Live)", "Hot Dawgit", "Paradise", "Expansions", "Sun Goddess", "Sassy Stew (Live)", "Whisper Zone", "Camino El Bueno", "All The Way Live", "Intimacy", "I'll Always Dream About You" and more.

Marlena Shaw's first-ever album – and while not as all-out righteous as some of her later work, still a really unique record that quickly put Marlena head and shoulders above the rest of the pack! The record's a mix of jazzy vocal numbers and heavier soul tunes – arranged by Richard Evans with a hiply swinging sound that bridges modes nicely – and which offers a deeper, more sophisticated take on the kind of territory explored by Nancy Wilson on Capitol during the 60s. Tunes are a real mix of material, but all transformed nicely in this setting – so that standout session tunes like "Ahmad's Blues", "I've Gotten Over You", and "Nothing But Tears" sit very nicely next to more familiar numbers like "Matchmaker Matchmaker", "Alone Together", and "The Eyes Of Love". Also includes a great reading of "Somewhere In The Night"!

On the surface, the record's a combination of jazz and soul tracks in the same mode that you'd find on some of Nancy Wilson's albums for Capitol during the same time – but digging deeper, you'll find an undercurrent of politics, feminism, and social commentary delivered with surprising intensity. Marlena Shaw's voice is generally sweet, but she's set up in some extremely powerful arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney that recast even the simplest phrase into a whole new setting of strength and pride – and Bobby Miller of Dells fame also helped make the record what it is, and helped write some of the best songs on the record. The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one!

A bit of soul, a bit of jazz, and some nice funky touches at the bottom – a killer little set from the great Spanky Wilson! Wilson's got a really unique place in music – at one level a soul singer with enough sophistication to rival the sound of Marlena Shaw or Nancy Wilson – but at another level, an artist capable of really letting loose – hitting heavier, funkier modes that neither of those singers could ever touch! This set may well be Wilson's masterpiece – put together with excellent production and arrangements from the great HB Barnum – here coming off a great run of work for other artists in the 60s, and focusing all that experience on making Spanky sound great. Titles include "If I Could", "You", "Don't Mess With Bill", "Light My Fire", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Hurtin", and "The Love That A Woman Should Give To A Man".

They might well call this a Beginners Guide To Blue Note Jazz Funk – given that most of the tracks here are from the hip 70s run at Blue Note Records! The vibe is wonderful – funky and soulful, but definitely with jazz at the forefront – as older soloists were finding new ways to reach their audiences through electric grooves – and younger players were making a huge name for themselves through a very inventive approach to their work! One of Carmen McRae's great 60s albums for Atlantic Records – a set that's still strongly jazz-based overall, but which seems to have an extra dose of soul at the bottom! The approach is a bit like the best late 60s sides by Nancy Wilson or Marlena Shaw – rooted in jazz, but hipper with some soulful elements in the backdrops – penned in this case by Jimmy Jones and Shorty Rogers, both of whom do a great job with the arrangements. The crispness of Carmen's voice works perfectly in the setting – and titles include "Watch What Happens", "Sound Of Silence", "MacArthur Park", "Can You Tell", and "Gloomy Sunday".

A beautiful album of baroque soul from Verdelle Smith – a singer who was destined to score big in the mid 60s, but somehow only managed to cut a handful of records before dropping out of secular music forever! Verdelle's got an unusual style that's halfway between Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson – sharing the sophistication of both, but also coming across with a fragile quality at times – one that's almost a maturation of the girl group ethos, turned onto a more adult world of pop. The approach is a bit similar to the changes going on in the Walker Brothers near the end of the trio's time together – and it's no surprise that Scott Walker did a tremendous version of the tune "Alone In My Room" himself. But we love Verdelle's original take on the track – a sad and dreamy little tune that makes wonderful use of organ and creates one of the saddest moments in 60s pop that we can think of! This beautiful CD features that great cut, plus 21 more numbers that represent everything that Verdelle recorded apart from gospel – mostly titles done for Capitol, plus a few Columbia singles as well.
