new NME Special Series — 50 Albums That Built Punk ... Magazine
NME (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
More of a book than a magazine – a special issue of NME that lays out 50 of the most important albums in punk – pretty great reading, on a pretty compelling list that will no doubt spark plenty of controversy! The issue is heavy on interview text and history, plus vintage images too – and in addition to some key classics from the late 70s, the list also includes a few surprises from later years too!

new Uncut Special Edition — Beatles – The Complete Story – Ultimate Music Guide ... Magazine
Uncut (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Uncut covers The Beatles: The Complete Story for this essential issue in their Ultimate Music Guide Series – focusing solely on their years as a band – with both classic interviews and new content from the expert team at Uncut! We saw the cover and wondered how they could pull this off – but they do it quite well, actually, by focusing square on John, Paul, George and Ringo as a band – and saving the solo output for another day. It features reviews of each Beatles era LP, from the raw debut of Please, Please Me to the Phil Spector polished swan song Let It Be – and also the best of later compilations like Past Masters, Anthology and others. Even better are the reprints of classic features from Uncut, Melody Maker and NME and the dozens of classic and rare photos of the group!

Anthony Braxton — 3 Compositions Of New Jazz ... CD
Delmark, 1968. New Copy .... $8.99 12.99
Even at an early age, Anthony Braxton was already experimenting with new forms of jazz composition – and this 1968 debut as a leader is filled with the imaginative approaches to music that would make him a key shaper of jazz in the next decade! The tracks here are all quite long, and although free-sounding, still have an intrisic logic dictated by Braxton's compositional ideals – played by himself on alto, soprano sax, clarinet, flute, and a variety of other instruments – in a quartet that features Leo Smith on trumpet and mellophone, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano and cello, and Leroy Jenkins on violin and viola. In true AACM fashion, all players pick up other instruments as the tunes roll on – percussion bits, kazoo, slide whistle, bells, and more – almost more Art Ensemble-like than some of Braxton's more tightly-controlled environments on later records. Titles include two pieces titled in Braxton's equation-like style – plus "The Bell".

Sonny Clark — Leapin & Lopin (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used .... $18.99
A killer hardbop session from the early 60s – one of Sonny Clark's later sides for Blue Note, and an album that features a great lineup of players that includes lesser-known Blue Note hornmen Charlie Rouse and Tommy Turrentine! The record crackles with the energy and imagination of Clark's best work for the label – leaping and loping along the grooves with a free-thinking approach to the tunes, and coming up with some exotically-tinged takes on the hardbop sound of the time – yet still allowing plenty of space for searing solo work. Ike Quebec joins the group on a few tracks as well, and titles include some of Clark's best compositions – like "Melody for C" and "Voodoo" – as well as the tracks "Eric Walks", "Midnight Mambo", and "Deep In A Dream".

Sammy Davis, Jr. — That's All! ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good 2LP Gatefold .... $1.99
The greatest entertainer ever? We think so – and this 2LP set offers Sammy D in the best possible way to get him: live, and in the very familiar turf of the Sands Hotel. This live album, and it's counterpart (At The Cocoanut Grove, also on Reprise) are, in our opinion, Sammy's best recordings – because they feature him ripping through a bunch of material, doing lots of great impressions and medleys, and really swinging with a tight little combo led by Michael Silva, the drummer. The groove is really jazzy – way jazzier than on some of Sammy's studio LPs from the time – and he runs through a range of material from pop tunes to standards, done in a style that's far different than you'd expect for the titles. The vocals are tight, heartfelt, but also given a professional little finesse that really makes them sparkle. Titles include "Ain't I", "Another Spring", "On A Clear Day", "As Long As She Needs Me", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and 2 fantastic medleys with lots of jazzy songs. Heck, Dean Martin never got a chance to cut a double live album – and Frank really ever did one – so given that Sammy got a chance to do two of them, you've gotta figure the format really worked for him! This is the real Mr. Entertainment, and you owe it to yourself to hear him as he really was.
(Stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and a partially split top seam.)

Dusty Groove — Dusty Groove Easy Tote! ... Misc
Dusty Groove Gear, New Copy .... $2.99
One of the grooviest bags you'll ever hope to own – stylish, practical, and super-durable! This bag's big enough to handle a nice hunk of LPs – you can easily fit 15 to 20 records inside – but it's also tightly-designed enough to work with CDs as well – or books, DJ gear, and even groceries too! The shape is similar to some of those environmentally-friendly bags you'll get at the food store – which means you can fold this one up easily – but the design is a lot more rugged – with straps that go fully around and hug the bottom, extra padding down low, and a laminated finish on the sides – all of which makes the whole thing extra-durable. We've already been test-shopping these bags all around Chicago – and we can promise a long life of fashionable use on your end, too!

PDP Productions, 2006. New Copy .... $8.99
Chicago stepping taken to the next level – in this great follow up DVD to the first Chicago Steppers package! This one's actually a lot better done than the first one – better production values, better image quality, and an overall more classy level of presentation – all of which is good, because the moves here are more complicated than the first time around. In addition to regular instructional footage, the DVD features an interview with legendary DJ Herb Kent – the 50s and 60s soul legend whose career was revived in the 90s steppers scene. Music is by Bobby Hutton, Marzette Griffith, and others – and the DVD also provides introduction to steppers clubs like the 50 Yard Line, Taste Entertainment Center, and others.

Environments — Environments–Disc 1 ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good Gatefold .... $3.99
We have to admit we find these records to be a lot of fun, but no one could possibly buy the spiel in the liner notes about their "effect on the imagination and subconscious of the listener". Two extended soundscapes here: side one is "The Psychologically Ultimate Seashore", side two is the "Optimum Aviary". As the notes say, play at any speed, for different psychological effects.

Hot Peas & Butta X Big Pimp Jones — Kodoja – Terror Mountain Showdown (CD & 7inch) ... CD
Record Breakin, 2012. New Copy CD & 7inch .... $16.99
An inventive project from Hot Peas & Butta and Big Pimp Jones – one that's similar to some of the soundtrack-styled funk we've heard before from the latter act – but with a vibe that's definitely deeper, too! The music here is written for an imaginary thriller – based around a secret government project – and the results are quite similar to the grooves you might hear on some classic 70s soundtrack for a film with a equally-compelling plotline! Drums are heavy, and there's lots of bold deep funk energy at the core – but there's also some richer sounds too – touches of orchestrations here and there which really shade things in nicely, and make you feel like the record is more of a high-budget studio recording than a simple deep funk effort. Titles include "Terror Mountain Showdown", "Night Over The Harbor", "Battle In The Sky", "Epilogue Of Chaos", "Descending Upon Monsters", and "The Military's Kiss". Comes with a bonus 7" single – feature three more tracks not on the CD!

Jaga Jazzist — Jaga Jazzist Live With The Britten Sinfonia ... CD
Ninja Tune (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
The often cinematic sounds of Jaga Jazzist, given an extra orchestral sweep – working beautifully well with the Britten Sinfonia chamber orchestra! It's a match made in jazzy, proggy, soundtracky heaven. Jaga Jazzist has a sprawling sound even at their core – with soul jazz, prog and contemporary club sounds delivered in a way that's brilliantly unique to the group – so surely stands to reason that they could adapt quite brilliantly in a grander concert environment. Well, it's even greater than you'd expect! The guitar, vibes, percussion, horns, synth and piano of Jaga Jazzist is complemented beautifully by Britten Sinfonia's strings, flutes, clarinets, bassoon and additional horns and percussion. Includes the slow-building, epic 15+ minute opener "One-Armed Bandit", plus sweet symphonic takes on "Kitty Wu", "Prungen", "For All You Happy People", "Toccata", "Bananfluer Overalt", "Music! Dance! Drama!" and "Oslo Skyline". Recorded at Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo and at the Baribican in London in fall and summer 2012.

Elvin Jones — Live at the Lighthouse Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $15.99
Easily the most hard-hitting of Blue Note's 2LP Lighthouse Live series from the early 70s – and a record that really lets Elvin Jones and his group stretch out and play! The setting is a perfect one for Jones – given the boundless energy already present on his studio sessions for Blue Note at the time – really fierce work that goes beyond even his classic Coltrane performances – pushing the limits in a sweet blend of rhythm and reeds! The group here is Elvin's razor-edge combo from the early 70s – the one that features Gene Perla on fat funky bass, and both Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman playing choppy reeds along with the grooves – really amazing hornmen at this point in their career, blowing here with interplay that's simply fantastic! Jones' leadership both draws from his years with Coltrane, yet also takes the music to key new levels – increasing the energy without blowing the top off, and creating a vivid new groove that so many others would try to cop later in the 70s – but never do this well. Titles on this first volume include "Fancy Free", "Sambra", and "The Children Save The Children".

Erkin Koray — Arap Saci ... CD
Turkofon/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99
The Jimi Hendrix of Turkey? That may well be the case with the legendary Erkin Koray – a musician who may not have had the pure chops of Hendrix, but who definitely helped transform the guitar sound of an entire generation! Erkin's got this massively wicked groove – rooted in years of Turkish tradition, yet electrified too – and often laid out over rhythms that are hypnotic and exotic – a perfect fit for the tripped-out production of the tunes! This excellent double-length collection brings together material from rare singles and albums by Koray – and really stands as a perfect introduction to one of the coolest cats in the Near East during the 70s – music that really defies description, not to mention the boundaries of language and nation as well. Titles include "Sevince", "Anma Arkadas", "Eyvah", "Arap Saci", "Komsu Kizi", "Timbilli", "Sana Birseyler Olmus", "Silinmeyen Hatiralar", "Yagmur", "Mesafeller", and "Feshuphanallah".

Femi Kuti — Africa For Africa ... CD
Knitting Factory, 2011. New Copy .... $13.99 14.98
Turns out, it DOES run in the family – a great talent for Afro Funk grooves, with the same deeply soulful elements that made Fela Kuti's music so great back in the 70s! This smoker from Femi was recorded at the legendary Afrodisia studios in Lagos – with a nice degree of edge in the mix, which really helps preserve all the grit in the grooves you'd hear in classic Afro Funk from years back! There's none of the too-polished, too-contemporary sounds that might otherwise hurt the energy of the group on record – and instead, all the best bottom bits of the percussion, the snakeyness of the keyboards, and the raspiness of the horns comes through beautifully. Titles include "Dem Bobo", "Nobody Beg You", "E No Good", "No Blame Them", "Make We Remember", "Can't Buy Me", and "Bad Government".

Prince Paul — Psychoanalysis (What Is It?) (2LP pressing – with poster) ... LP
Tommy Boy/Get On Down, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $16.99 18.98
Prince Paul's first solo set – with the same dope production and sense of humor that have made all his other projects classics – even if this one's way overlooked in his canon! It's a bit of a concept album – with tracks that play out as chapters in the state of a messed-up hip hop mind state – over timeless beats with that slightly off kilter Prince Paul approach. 18 tracks in all, counting the interludes, including "Drinks (Escapism)", "Psycho Linguistics (Convergent Thought)", "Vexual Healing (Vacillation)" "Introduction To Psychoanalysis (Schizophrenia), "Beautiful Night (Manic Psychopath), "Open Your Mouth (Hypothalamus)", "That's Entertainment!? (Aversive Conditioning)", "In Your Mind (Altered States)" and "Booty Clap".

Sun Ra — Continuation ... LP
Saturn, 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival".

Frank Rosolino — Turn Me Loose ... CD
Reprise (Japan), 1961. New Copy .... $15.99
One of the rarest albums by Frank Rosolino – and a surprisingly great vocal set as well! The tunes are short, but Frank manages to both sing and turn in his usual trombone solo work here – and while the latter is great, we especially love the former! Frank's vocals have a raspy, playful quality that's a bit like Jack Sheldon's singing – and as with some of the later Sheldon albums, this one's a great illustration of the under-recorded side of some of the talents of players on the LA scene – their "entertainer" personas that were often used when working the bandstand in a live environment. And if you're suspicious about the vocals, don't be – because Frank is really great here, and manages to transform the tunes heavily – taking old standards and playfully inflecting them with new life and a rough edge – a bit similar to work by Bob Dorough or Johnny Watson (for his Chess session) on similar material. The rest of the group is a quartet that features Charles Berghofer on bass, Victor Feldman on piano, and Irv Cottler on drums – and titles include "It Had To Be You", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Whatcha Gonna Do On Monday", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "It Had To Be You", and "Please Don't Bug Me".

Nino Rota — Prova D'Orchestra ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1978. Near Mint- .... $24.99
A very strange album, and one of our favorite scores by Nino Rota! Written for a film in which a disfunctional orchestra stands in as a metaphor for the Italian government, the music has a lot of stopping and starting and talking and disruption – all of which has a very comical effect. The main theme is very compelling, in the usual Rota way, and the record comes together in a nice messed-up pastiche of vein attempts to try to play together.

Melvin Sparks — Sparks/Akilah ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970/1972. New Copy .... $15.99
2 great ones from funky guitarist Melvin Sparks – back to back on a single CD! The Sparks album is a killer – one of the best from Prestige during the runaway classic years of the early 70s! Melvin Sparks is a genius guitarist, with a talent as rich as that of Grant Green, who's probably his most immediate precursor. He'd played in the groups of Lou Donaldson and Jack McDuff during the late 60s, but by the time of this release, he was breaking out on his own as one of the hottest funk guitarists in jazz. The group's an excellent one – and features Idris Muhammad on funky drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet, and the great Leon Spencer on organ. The tracks are nice and long, especially the original "The Stinker", and the cool cover of "Spill the Wine". Also includes a great funky cover of Sly Stone's "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf". Akilah is an album that was cut for Prestige during the years when they were expanding the lineup on the albums a bit past the usual soul jazz quintet format – but even with a bigger group, the album's still got a great array of players, including Leon Spencer on organ, Idris Muhammad on drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet, Dave Hubbard on tenor, Hubert Laws on flute, and Sonny Fortune on alto. Melvin's single-line guitar work is incredibly great – very much like Grant Green's during the early 70s – and titles include "Love the Life You Live", "Akilah", and "All Wrapped Up".

Sonny Stitt — Broadway Soul ... CD
Colpix (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99
A lost Sonny Stitt session from the 60s – but wonderfully swinging, and with a groove that really works well! The album's a set of Broadway tunes played jazz-wise – but in the hands of Stitt, they come up wonderfully – stretching out with soulful intensity that's mighty nice, amidst a larger ensemble that makes for a nice contrast from some of Sonny's smaller group sessions! Stitt plays both alto and tenor – and the group features some excellent other hornmen in the lineup – Zoot Sims, Jerome Richardson, and Budd Johnson on tenor saxes, Phil Woods on alto, and Thad Jones on trumpet – plus Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. Stitt's in the lead here – blowing cleanly and confidently, much more soaringly than on earlier records, and without the tricks of later electric ones. Titles include "Gimme Some", "Night Song", "Better All The Time", "You'd Better Love Me", and "Loads Of Love".

Rhonda Thomas — Listen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Rhonvocals, 2010. New Copy .... $11.99
Rhonda Thomas sounds better than ever – soaring out in that wonderful mix of jazz and soul that's always made her music so great! We've been following Rhonda for years, and the journey's been a delight at every step – but this time around, the rewards are even greater – as Thomas steps off with a deeply soulful quality that almost reminds us of Maysa at her best, but delivered with some of the leaner flair of the Atlanta scene, of which Rhonda is a very big part! Instrumentation is warm, but never mellow – and there's a nice crisp edge to the rhythms, yet all without resorting to any broken beat styles, or overdone cosmic modes. The album's filled with Thomas' personality and sense of goodwill – overflowing with positive energy from the very first note! Titles include "Listen", "Just Us", "When Music Was Good", "Do Your Thing", "Darfur Woman", "Peppermint Leaves", "Something For You", and "Unmerited Favor". This version includes 3 bonus tracks "The Light (Al Ross rmx)", "Best Intentions (DJ Kemit & Alex Lattimore rmx)", and "Darfur Woman (inst)".

Earl Van Dyke — Earl Of Funk ... LP
SOUL, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $5.99
Fierce funky instrumentals from Motown keyboardist Earl Van Dyke – a set that's overflowing with great original tracks, plus some sweet funky covers too! The style here is quite different than Earl's previous work – and quite different from most of Motown too – with a hard-edged approach to the grooves that's much more like the work going on in the funky 45 underground on other labels – especially on the drums, which often snap nicely and give the album a great breaking sort of sound! The set was recorded live at the Hi Chapparal club in Detroit, with audience noise dubbed in later – and titles include "The Flick", "Cissy Strut", "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again", "Fuschia Moods", "The Stingray", "The Whip a Rang", "Someday We'll Be Together", and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye".

Various — Light On The Southside – Photographs Of Chicago Southside Nightlife 1975 to 1977 (hardcover book with 2LP set) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/2009. New Copy 2LP & Book .... $52.99 59.98
Quite possibly the most beautiful record we've ever seen from the folks at The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the quality of all their top-shelf releases! This beautiful edition features a hardcover book of vintage black and white photographs taken on Chicago's south side in the mid 70s – images of patrons and proprietors from long-lost nite spots that include Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, and The Showcase Lounge – all the kind of clubs that were likely to feature the sort of Chicago funk and soul that Numero's been reissuing for the past few years! The images are amazing – a really rare look into the community that supported this sort of music – caught far far from the mainstream, in placed that were almost even private, compared to more well-travelled entertainment outlets. Photographs come from the collection of Michael Abramson – and are beautifully reproduced on LP-sized pages, in a book that also features some vintage flyers, posters, and business cards from the clubs! And if that's not enough, Numero also throws in some great notes of their own, and a bonus 2LP set with music that includes "I'm A Streaker Baby" by Arelean Brown, "No Better Time Than Now" by Ricky Allen, "The Same One" by Malcolm Simmons, "You Made Me Suffer" by Andrew Brown, "This Is My Prayer" by Lady Margo, "It's A Dream" by Little Ed & The Soundmasters Band, "I Sayed That" by Slim Willis Band, "Bring It Down Front" by Hugh Hawkins, "Womans Lib" by Lucille Spann, "Gimmie Some Of Yours" by Artie White, "Baby" by Walter Butterball Davis, "Is It Because I'm Black (inst)" by Syl Johnson, "Goose Walk" by Little Mack, "Young Blood" by Detroit Jr, "California Lady" by James Kinds & Stack, and "I Learned My Lesson" by Willie Davis. The albums are packaged in their own Numero-like cover – then nestled in a slipcover with the book – a hell of a sweet set at this price, and it also comes with an introduction by Nick Hornby!

A wonderful compilation of the Microsolutions 12-inch series on the always edible Soul Jazz Records – A scatter-shot mix of the electronic underground – from glitchy house to jazzy broken beat to left-field hip hop and back again. The common thread here is the absolute abandonment of anything straightforward – each number drops a heavy dose of heady experimentation in the mix! Tracks include "Humbaba" by Kit Clayton, "We Got It 303 (Live Acid edit)" by Secondo, "Tranzit" by Rekid, "BBQ Plate (Telefon Tel Aviv mix)" by AmmonContact, "Discoetique" & "Sunday Love Of Kind" by A Greenman, "Mouth Party" & "Boulez' Toes" by Sutekh, "On Bellflower (Smyglyssna mix)" by AmmonContact, "Sunkissed (Daedelus mix)" by Hu Vibrational, "Batmen" & "Banana Peel" by Kid 606, "Enkidu" by Kit Clayton, "Friends & Gardens (Corker/Conboy mix)" by Hu Vibrational, and "Body Ginger" by Tim Exile.

Various — Princess Nicotine – Folk & Pop Sounds Of Myanmar Vol 1 ... LP
Sublime Frequencies, 1960s/1970s. New Copy Gatefold .... $18.99
Incredible sounds from Burma – a really under-tapped musical legacy, finally brought forth by the always-great efforts of Sublime Frequencies! The sound here is unlike anything else we've ever heard – a very weird mish-mash of Southeast Asian elements, but always moving away from our expectations just when we think we've got a handle on it! There's some soulful vocals that remind us a bit of recordings from the subcontinent – but at other times, there's some very noisy, very percussive passages that remind us of the intense side of Indonesian gamelon – and at still other points, there's the weird sort of cultural crossroads that you'd get in frequently passed-through territories like Vietnam or Cambodia. But this hardly even gets at the surface of the whole thing – and as usual, you're best just putting your ears in the hands of Sublime Frequencies – as they blow your mind with cuts that include "Burmese Golden Drum" by Bo Hein, "Really Strange & Weird Things" by Sein Sah Thin, "Beautiful Town" by Mar Mar Aye, "Elephant Dragon" by Luan Moe, "Good Time" by Yi Yi Thant/Aung Heina, and "The Tune Of The Second Entertainment" by Yangon Sein Kyi Moe.

Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2CDs .... $24.99
A crucially important slice of work – and maybe one of the most striking sets in this all-great Spiritual Jazz series! The focus here is on some of the great American players working in Europe during the late 60s and early 70s – often in collaboration with equally forward-thinking Europeans, and with results that are still musically amazing all these many years later! The collection has American flautist Sahib Shihab working with Swiss guitarist Pierre Cavalli, sound library maestro Johnny Hawksworth with west coast giant Hampton Hawes, Don Cherry working with Krzysztof Penderecki, a rare version of "Enlightenment" by Sun Ra in France and other legendary European recordings by Albert Ayler, Billy Gault, and Lee Konitz – a wonderfully rich blend of players. Brainstorm — Funky Entertainment (with bonus tracks) ... CD
1979. New Copy .... Around October 7, 2013
Funky Entertainment is right – as Brainstorm move into a bass-heavy groove that's every bit the sound of late 70s mainstream funk! The group still have some of the smooth dancefloor style of earlier records, but the emphasis here is much more on the bottom of the groove – popping and snapping with a heck of a lot of energy, forging a funky ensemble groove that became the group's calling card. Jerry Peters produced, and the whole thing's pretty soulful – and titles include "Popcorn", "Funky Entertainment", "A Case Of The Boogie", and "You Put A Charge In My Life".

new Philly Joe Jones — Trailways Express (aka Mo' Joe) ... LP
Black Lion, 1968. Very Good+ .... $6.99 Just Sold Out!
A killer session that matches the talents of American drum genius Philly Joe Jones with some of the leading lights in British jazz! The set was recorded in London in 1968, at that perfect moment when the Brit jazz scene was turning towards new ideas of modernism, but hadn't yet strayed too far from the tight swing that characterized most of its playing since the postwar years. Philly leads a group that includes Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Chris Pyne on trombone, Pete King on alto, and Harold McNair on tenor and flute. King and McNair are some of our favorite players ever, rarely reissued on CD or LP – and the set gives them plenty of free reign to solo madly in a bop-heavy environment. Titles include "Gone Gone Gone", "Trailways Express", "Mo Joe", and "Ladybird".
(Cover has some wear, a cut corner, a bit of sticker residue, and small stains along the top seam and opening.)

Sun Ra — Continuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 19.99 Just Sold Out!
Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness".

new Melvin Sparks — Sparks/Akilah ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970/1972. Used .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!

Capitol, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning! This is David Axelrod's rare suite of tracks dedicated to saving the enviroment with a set of jazzy funky grooves! The record's probably his most baroque album ever, with a big group of jazz players that mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – plus a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends. The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves!

Columbia, Early 50s. Used .... $48.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Duke Ellington albums, and a sometimes-overlooked work that stands as one of his best compositions from the time. The whole 10" LP stands as one extended suite of tracks commissioned by the Liberian government for their centennial celebration in 1947. The piece starts with the haunting "I Like The Sunrise", with vocals by Al Hibbler, then leads into 5 "Dances", with solo work by Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, and Tyree Glenn. Beautiful stuff, and one of the few essential Ellington LPs.

There's some pretty nice moments on Jerry Goldsmith's great score for the film A Patch of Blue (so many, in fact, that the score was later re-cast by Sun Ra and Walt Dickerson). The overall approach is orchestral – but there's a lot of moments when the instrumentation gets odd, and when the instruments fall out and recombine in interesting ways. Nice titles include "Bead Party", "Help Me", and "Selina's Walk".

Nice set that brings together the best moments from Eddie Jefferson's Muse years! Eddie's one of our favorite jazz vocalists of all time – and even though he got his start in the bebop years, these 70's recordings are still fantastic stuff. In fact, they may even show him in his best light ever, as the decade was a time when he was being rediscovered by younger fans and players, which added a heck of a lot of energy to his work. The CD includes a range of material – from straight jazz numbers like "Night In Tunisia", "Keep Walkin", and "Ornithology", to stranger 70's funky ones, like "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again", "Freedom Jazz Dance", and "Zap! Carnivorous".

A groundbreaking record from Kraftwerk – a set that unified the 70s worlds of analogue electronics and prog rock – yet somehow managed to set the scene for a whole new sound to come! The album's a treasure all the way through – slow-building, and with beautiful bubbling moments that have these surprisingly simple hooks – heard to best effect in the album's classic title cut "Autobahn" – but echoed nicely through the album's other longer tracks too – "Kometenmelodie 1 &2", "Mitternacht", and "Morgenspaziergang".

Smoking salsa from La Protesta – a group who really benefits from the lead trumpet lines of Tony Pabon, who also sings on some of the record too! The group have a tight sound that's right on the money – a groove that's right up there with the best Fania salsa combos of the time, but perhaps even leaner too – less overblown with any superstar sensibilities, and delivered here with a nice amount of youthful fire. An ultra-hip set from bassist Tyler Mitchell – a player who doesn't often record as a leader, but really makes his mark with this live performance from Smalls! Mitchell's group here is a great one – a really cohesive quintet with Josh Evans on trumpet, Abraham Burton on tenor, Spike Wilner on piano, and Eric McPherson on drums – all players who come together on the album's original compositions, and who have the inventiveness to keep things spontaneous and flowing on the very long tracks – all tunes that go well past a dozen or more minutes in length. Wilner's especially nice – bold, yet sensitive – and a great bridge between the leader and hornmen. Titles include "A Time Called Now", "La Tendresse", "Caton", "Taking It With Me", and "Taj's Theme".

new Sun Ra — Heliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra Vol 3 – The Lost Tapes ... CD
ESP, 1965. New Copy .... $6.99 17.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Previously unissued work by Sun Ra – tracks recorded during the sessions for his Heliocentric Worlds 2 album for ESP, but lost to the sands of time for nearly 40 years! Like that previous album, this one features a smaller version of the Arkestra than usual – an octet that has Ra working with core hornmen Pat Patrick, John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Walter Miller, and Robert Cummings – supported by a rhythm section that includes Ronnie Boykins on bass and Roger Blank on percussion. Apart from a lot of added percussion by various members of the group, the instrumentation overall is relatively straightforward – even if Ra's compositions are not. The set kicks off with the 17 minute "Intercosmosis" – a relatively free, stretched-out tune – then is followed by shorter numbers that travel along darker, more introspective pathways. These titles include "World Worlds", "Interplanetary Travelers", "Mythology Metamorphosis", and "Heliocentric Worlds".

Secret Stash, 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early to mid 70s Persian Funk – a nicely compiled set featuring some of the funkiest music released on Iran's Ahang Rooz label from the early-to-mid 70s! It's got instrumental stormers and vocal numbers – in Farsi and English – funk and soul steeped Persian grooves from an incredible period for modern music in the Middle East! Ahang Rooz rose up during a much different period in Iran, when government's Ministry Of Culture nurtured the label and grew to release albums by the biggest acts in the region. From the outset, the label produced music that blended regional folk styles and instrumentation with globally popular genres. Secret Stash celebrates the funky stuff for Persian Funk – be it straight forward or global pop and psych infused. new Various — Sounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray.

The piece starts with the haunting "I Like The Sunrise", with vocals by Al Hibbler, then leads into 5 "Dances", with solo work by Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, and Tyree Glenn. "Tone Parallel To Harlem" is added to the album, taking up all of side two, and is another beautiful extended work – the kind that really showed tremendous growth in Ellington's style.

new Eddie Jefferson — Things Are Getting Better ... CD
Muse, 1974. New Copy .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – a real standout classic that shows him retooling his sound for the 70s! After years of writing lyrics to James Moody and Charlie Parker tunes, Eddie lays out some crazy lyrics for modern jazz standards like "Freedom Jazz Dance" and "Bitches Brew", as well as "Night In Tunisia", which he'd never done before – and also offers up a great take on Cannonball's "Things Are Getting Better", not to mention Sly Stone's "Thank You Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Again"! There's a few more standard bop number in the mix too – like "Billie's Bounce" and "I Just Got Back In Town – and support is from a great group that includes Billy Mitchell on tenor, Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Mickey Tucker on keyboards.

new E Parker McDougal — Initial Visit – Chicago Hard Core Jazz ... LP
Grits, 1975. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of the rare few albums cut by E Parker McDougal – an underground Chicago tenor player in the tradition of the city's great undiscovered talents, like Von Freeman, Tommy Jones, Cozy Eggelston, and others. This obscure 1975 recording has him playing with a good group of southside players, in a relaxed boppish groove, such as you still might hear in one of the city's small jazz lounges. The material's fairly straight, and nearly all tracks are originals. The band includes Willie Pickens, Wilbur Cambell, and Steve McCall (playing in a non AACM environment) – and the tracks include "Foxxy Minor", "The Skeleton", "Mackin", and "Valse Grits".

new Tree People — Human Voices ... LP
Guerssen (Spain), 1984. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Tree People's second album – still growing strong, deeply rooted and flute flavored psychedelic folk well into to the 80s! This one has the feel of the first record from the late 70s, a really good thing given the tinny strange sound of folk and folkish records made in the 80s. The Oregon combo still brings with the earthy, sometimes spare and haunting, and at others nicely rollicking vibe. Titles include "Human Voices", "Grandfather", "Opus II", "Things Fall Apart", "Thomas", "Rain Rain", "Dance", "If That's Entertainment" and "Sketches".

new Various — Jazz Funk Revival ... CD

Way more than just a jazz funk revival – given that all of the tracks here are from the mighty Muse Records, one of the coolest companies going back in the 70s! The set does a great job of mixing straighter funk with some more righteous numbers – showing two key sides of the label's genius at the time – and really blowing our mind with the range of wonderful music in the set! There's loads of overlooked gems here – packaged nicely in one cool little set – and titles include "Mean Streets No Bridges" by Jimmy Ponder with John Patton, "Chameleon" and "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again" by Eddie Jefferson, "In the Middle of It All" by Neal Creque, "Mystery Of The Ages" by Carlos Garnett, "In The Meantime" by Kenny Barron", "Walk That Funky Dog" by Stan Bronstein, "Philadelphia Bright" by Walter Bishop Jr, "and both "Let Us Go" and "Black Love" by Carlos Garnett.

new Caravan — Man & Buffalo ... CD
Strawberry Rain, 1975. New Copy Gatefold .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Important work from the youth uprising years in mid 70s Thailand – a time when the group Caravan were central to some of the bigger protest themes against the nation's restrictive government! According to the notes, the power of this music led to group members' later exile – but to our western ears, which can't understand the lyrics, the album's got a totally different appeal – these beautifully-spun tunes that have slightly folksy undercurrents, but lots of dark shadows around the corners – almost like some psych group got too tripped-out, and turned to acoustic instrumentation to regain their cool. Most guitars are acoustic, and there's also some slide guitar too – alongside violin, harmonica, and local instruments phin and wut. Vocals are often a lot more melancholy than you'd expect for a protest record – but that also adds to the charm of the set a lot!

new Kare Kolberg — Electronic Works 1970 to 1973 ... LP
Prisma (Norway), Early 70s. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Pretty amazing sounds from this experimental Norwegian composer! Side one of the record features the groundbreaking "Nova" – a piece originally composed for a multi-media installation in 1972, with a message on the way we were destroying our planet! The dark sounds come from tape loops, changing slowly – installed as large speakers in a space with stringed panels, tires, and paper – all set to music that has an eerie, pre-industrial sort of feel. Next is "Omgivelser" – another environmentally-related piece – and with an equally electronic style – almost somewhere between early musique concrete, and later industrial sounds of the late 70s underground. Last is "Keiserens Nye Slips" – more electronic, in a less abstract way – with these beautiful melodic moments that almost glisten and glimmer like electric rain drops!

new Erkin Koray — Erkin Koray (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Istanbul/World Psychedelia, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
The first full album of work by Erkin Koray – a Turkish rocker from the late 60s and early 70s, and one who did a lot to fuse American rock styles with "arabesk", a Turkish version of Arab popular music! Erkin started out in the beat group years, and some of the earlier tracks here show that influence – but as time goes on, the guitars get heavier and mix more with traditional instrumentation to create a sound that's really unique – almost an eastern take on progressive modes of the west, played to best effect by Koray on the electric baglama – a weirdly tuned stringed instrument that's a bit like a trippy version of the lute! Some tracks here have vocals, others are more heavy on the instrumentals – and the CD features 20 tracks that comprise most of the singles recorded by Koray for Istanbul Records. Titles include "Istemem", "Cicek Dagi", "Nihansin Dideden", "Mesafeler", "Yagmur", "Ilahi Morluk", "Dost Aci Soyler", "Zulehya", "Belki Birgun Anlarsin", and "Silinmeyen Hatiralar".

new Sun Ra — What Planet Is This? (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vinyl Lovers/Lilith (Italy), 1973. New Copy 2LP .... $32.99 39.98 Out Of Stock
The early 70s Arkestra at the height of their power – recorded in a brilliant live set from 1973, one that showcases the bold soul of the Impulse years! There's a resonance here with other spiritual jazz experiments going on in the US at the time – and Ra and the 25 members strong group seem firmly committed to exploring new freedoms in jazz, yet still work with messages that can reach out to a larger group – themes explored vocally on versions of "Astro Black", "Enlightenment", and "Space Is The Place", juxtaposed by longer instrumental passages that have a cohesiveness that's sometimes missing from other live sets. Other titles the 2LP version include "What Planet Is This? Opening Improvisation", "Love In Outer Space", "The Shadow World", "Watusa/Egyptian March", and "Discipline 27" and "What Planet Is This? Closing Improvisation".
(180 gram vinyl. Please note: the 2LP version features alternate artwork and differently titled improvisational pieces than the 2CD version from Golden Years UK, and a bit less running time overall.)

new Paul Humphrey — Paul Humphrey Sextet ... LP
Discovery, 1981. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Very different work than usual for superdrummer Paul Humphrey – a warm, acoustic set of soul jazz – with a very different approach than his 70s albums! Humphrey's really stepping out here as a strong straight jazz leader – working with a group that includes west coast hornmen Buster Cooper, Oscar Brashear, and Herman Riley – arranged by the pianist in the group, Llew Mathews. The tunes are nearly all originals – done with a post-Horace Silver style that mixes the soulful and the introspective, and which slides into lots of warm tones and colors, all while still keeping its groove. Titles include "My Mind Is Free", "Thiago", "Snap", "Roundabout", and "Return To The Nightsong".
