Blaze — 25 Years Later ... LP
Motown, 1990. Very Good+ .... $18.99
A fantastic bit of soul and house that was woefully overlooked at the time of its release – and one of our favorite albums of the past 25 years! The Blaze production team had been hitting the underground club scene hard for a few years with their raw New Jersey house singles – then Motown grabbed them in the studio, and had them cut this classic album of soul tracks that pays homage to a set of greats that runs from Leroy Hutson, to Donnie Hathaway, to Norman Harris, and a host of others – all with a sense of soulfulness and depth that goes way past their standard work for the clubs! The dancefloor tracks are great, but the album's also got some wonderfully mellow moments too – with tracks that include "So Special", "We All Must Live Together", "Missing You", and "Get Up".

Dazz Band — Invitation To Love ... LP
Motown, 1980. Very Good- .... $2.99
A killer start to the 80s for the Dazz Band – with great tunes in a funky mode as well as more measured group soul numbers – and it all adds up one of their best albums ever! Tunes like the opener "Shake It", plus "Shake It Up" and "Magnetized" bring the funkier vibes – with a vamping guitar, thumping bass groove, punchy horns, and top notch vocals from the group – while tunes like the title track and "Beyond The Horizon" have a more soaring arrangement of horns and some strings, still with an impeccable core groove. It's not as smoothed out in the production booth as some of their later grooves of the 80s – a total gem! Other titles include " Skate Lovers", "Carry On", "Do It Again", "Do It Again", "Sooner Or Later" and "Beyond The Horizon".
(Cover has a promo sticker, cutout notch, some wear, and creasing.)

DeBarge — In A Special Way ... LP
Motown, 1983. Very Good .... $2.99
A surprisingly great album from DeBarge – proof that the group really had something great at the start! Much as we'd like to dismiss DeBarge for their dated costumes and silly covers, the group still stands as one of the strongest pop acts from early 80s Motown – and have an undeniably catchy groove that still has appeal after all these years! Of course, part of the strength of this one is actually the mellower numbers – sung in a wonderfully sweet harmony mode that was instantly timeless. The best of these is "Stay With Me", sampled to great effect, and a tune elevates this album above all the rest – but there's plenty of other tasty numbers too, including "Time Will Reveal", "Need Somebody", "Be My Lady", "Love Me In A Special Way" and "Queen Of My Heart".
(Cover has light staining and waviness in the corners.)

Four Tops — Still Waters Run Deep ... LP
Motown, 1970. Very Good .... $4.99
Possibly the last big hit that the Four Tops ever cut for Motown – and proof that they could still turn out strong material, as was later proven by their work at ABC. The title cut – "Still Waters (Run Deep)" – is one of those always enjoyable, surprisingly sophisticated little pop soul tunes – and the record features a lot of other nice moments like "Love Is The Answer", "Reflections", "I Wish I Were Your Mirror", "Bring Me Together", and a reprise of "Still Waters". Nice use of moog, too!
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Four Tops — Yesterday's Dreams ... LP
Motown, 1968. Very Good .... $0.99
A mix of pop and soul – but in the hands of the Four Tops, just about any song takes on a new soulful life! The record features their minor hit "Yesterday's Dreams" – plus groovy versions of "Sunny", "Never My Love", "Daydream Believer", and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Also includes nice lesser-known material like "Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind", "Once Upon A Time", and "I'm In A Different World".

Thelma Houston — Devil In Me ... LP
Motown, 1977. Sealed .... $2.99
Thelma's one of those singers who must have been waiting years for disco to come around and help her find a reason to sing! Her career was slightly ill-timed in the beginning, coming along with a baroque soul beginning that was great, yet somewhat out of place in the early 70s. But enter a record like this – which takes Thelma's beautiful voice and fills it up with strings and disco rhythms – and you've got a well-done set that suddenly makes her whole sound make sense! Arrangements are surprisingly great, and relatively cliché-free on the best numbers – handled by Kim Richmond, James Carmichael, Greg Wright, and Michel Rubini. Titles include "I'm Here Again", "Triflin", "I've Got The Devil In Me", "Give Me Something To Believe In", "Memories", "Your Eyes", and "I Can't Go On Living Without Your Love".

Michael Jackson — Got To Be There ... LP
Motown, 1971. Near Mint- .... $7.99
Early Michael Jackson at his best – a brilliant solo album that sparkles with honest warmth and sweet soul energy! There's a gentleness to the tunes that's quite striking, but never childish – a simple and effective approach to the material that's sung in a manner that's years beyond Michael's young age – produced to perfection by The Corporation, with lots of great 70s soul touches. Titles include nice versions of "Ain't No Sunshine", "Got To Be There", and "I Wanna Be Where You Are" – plus the nice Willie Hutch tune "Girl, Don't Take Your Love From Me", and the unfortunate novelty cut "Rockin Robin".

Jackson 5 — Looking Through The Windows ... LP
Motown, 1972. Near Mint- .... $7.99
Pure genius – like just about every other early Motown album by the Jackson 5! The vocals are sublime – almost even more perfect than on the first few records – and the group have some great help in the studio from arrangers like The Corporation, Willie Hutch, Johnny Bristol, and and James Carmichael – all of whom really help the quintet find their groove! Titles include "I Can Only Give You Love", "E Ne Me Ne Mi Ne Moe", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", "Lookin Through The Windows", and "To Know".

new Mandre — Mandre ... LP
Motown, 1977. Very Good .... $8.99
We have to admit we've passed this album up for years and years, as it seems to be rather ubiquitous in these parts, and boy were we mistaken! Side one is mostly instrumental, and sounds like a lost Dexter Wansel album, with sophisticated, spacey post-fusion arrangements and a quasi-futuristic vibe. Side two changes up the vibe a bit, with vocals and a slightly slicker approach, with a kind of Bootsy-esque funk vibe creeping in just a bit. 9 tracks in all, including the sublime "Solar Flight (Opus I)" and "Third World Calling (Opus II)", plus "Keep Tryin", "Masked Music Man" and "Masked Marauder".
(Cover has a bit of light wear.)

Originals — Down To Love Town ... LP
Motown, 1977. Very Good .... $4.99
The Originals are hitting more of a dance-oriented groove here – a mix of disco, soul, and uptempo funk arrangements, but still maintaining their harmony sound, in the manner of other Detroit groups at the time, like The Fantastic Four or Detroit Emeralds. Titles include "Call On Your Six Million Dollar Man", "Hurry Up & Wait", "Been Decided", and "Down To Love Town".
(Cover has ring & edge wear and a sticker.)

new Billy Preston & Syreeta/David Shire — Fast Break ... LP
Motown, 1979. Sealed .... $3.99
Billy Preston & Syreeta handled the music for this slightly-lame, kind of strange Gabe Kaplan vehicle from the late 70s. The music is relatively fine, although the album lacks any totally funky moments. Instrumentals include "Books & Basketball", "Half Time", "The Big Game", and "Welcome To Cadwaller". Also includes regular and disco versions of "Go For It", the theme of the movie.
(In the textured cover, with a cutout notch.)

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas — Anthology ... LP
Motown, 1960s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP .... $6.99
Martha and the girls' entry into Motown's well-done series of 70s multi-LP collections – this one only a double-length set, but still filled with plenty of great bits by the group! The set features a solid decade's worth of work – material from the trio's 1962 start at Motown, up to some of their even better albums for the label in the early 70s. Titles include "Bless You", "Honey Love", "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things", "My Baby Loves Me", "Honey Chile", "Jimmy Mack", "I Promise To Wait My Love", "Benjamin", "Tear It On Down", "In & Out Of My Life", "Live Wire", "Wild One", "Motoring", "Nowhere To Run", "Quicksand", "Love Is Like A Heat Wave", and "I'll Have To Let Him Go".

new David Ruffin — Everything's Coming Up Love ... LP
Motown, 1976. Very Good+ .... $3.99
David Ruffin teams with Van McCoy for this sweet little set – and the result is a great batch of grooves that swell with Ruffin's soulful sound of the 70s, but sway with the warm McCoy dancefloor modes of the time! Van wrote nearly all the tracks in the set – and handled all arrangements and production – but the record's far less disco than you'd guess, thanks to cracklingly earnest vocals from Ruffin, who's still given plenty of space to shine center stage on the record. The balance is essential, and is carried off here in a manner similar to the best Philly soul albums of its type. Titles include "First Round Knockout", "On & Off", "Good Good Times", "Ready Willing & Able", "Everything's Coming Up Love", "Discover Me", "Until We Said Goodbye", and "Let's Get Into Something".

new David Ruffin — My Whole World Ended ... LP
Motown, 1969. Very Good .... $11.99
David Ruffin's first solo album after leaving The Temptations – and a record that's as great as anything he ever recorded with the group! The album's got the general feel of Ruffin's lead vocal work on "I Wish It Would Rain" from the Temps years – with plenty of baroque soul orchestrations, cut through nicely by Ruffin's raspy soulful vocals. "My Whole World Ended" was a bit of a hit – but everything else on here's just as strong, and tracks include "Pieces Of A Man", "Everlasting Love", "My Love Is Growing Stronger", "We'll Have A Good Thing Going On", and "World Of Darkness".
(Deep groove pressing.)

Supremes — Let The Sunshine In ... LP
Motown, 1969. Very Good+ .... $4.99
Groovy late 60s work from Diana Ross & The Supremes – a record that has them breaking the Motown mold a bit, and hooking up with a nice variety of modder soul and pop modes! Tracks on the set include a few Motown-penned numbers, but the trio also tackle hits like "Everyday People", "Hey Western Union Man", "Let The Music Play", and a great Hair-inspired medley of "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In"! But the Motown material here is almost even better – and titles include the slightly funky "No Matter What Sign You Are", which has a nice kick in the bottom – as well as "Discover Me", "The Composer", and "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted".
(Original pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

Syreeta — Spell ... LP
Motown, 1983. Very Good+ .... $0.99
Syreeta's a bit past the point of her early genius here – still singing in that warm and sweet style we love so much, but working with Jermaine Jackson, in a setting that's sometimes a bit too cold for her magic to fully take place. Overall, the album's got a few nice numbers – and is probably worth picking up if you're a big Syreeta fan – but we'd probably also point you more towards her earlier records if you're just getting started. Titles include "Forever Is Not Enough", "Once Love Touches Your Life", "Freddie Um Ready", "The Other Me", "Fall Apart", "To Know", and "Freedom".

Temptations — Song For You ... LP
Motown, 1975. Very Good .... $1.99
A tightly funky set from The Temptations – a record that has the group still standing strong in the post-Norman Whitfield years – working here with producer Jeffrey Bowen in a groove that's almost got some P-Funk touches at times! Things are somewhat polished, but still in the best mainstream funk mode of the time – and in a way, the record's almost a blueprint for the style that so many California groups would pick up in the next few years – upbeat grooves, often driven with some heavy bass at the bottom, but still with enough room for well-crafted vocals on the top. Arrangements are by James Carmichael on most tracks – and the backing group includes Wah Wah Ragin and Eddie Hazel on guitar, both of whom get plenty of space to work out on the set. Tracks include the instrumental "Happy People" – plus "Glass House", "Shakey Ground", "The Prophet", "A Song For You", "Firefly", and "I'm A Bachelor".
(Original pressing in the die-cut cover. Cover has light wear and a promo sticker.)

Mary Wilson — Mary Wilson ... LP
Motown, 1979. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A post-Supremes disco effort from Mary Wilson – but one that comes off relatively well, especially considering how a session like this could flop if done poorly! Mary's getting some top-shelf help on the album – Hal Davis on production, Art Wright on arrangements, and a set of original material by Frank Busey and John Duarte – all of which keeps the record from being just a disco filler kind of set. But the real strength here is Wilson's vocals – which are strongly soulful, and never overwhelmed by the backings. And while we're not ready to say that Mary's a great club diva, we're surprised at how well she does fit into this mode. Titles include "Midnight Dancer", "Red Hot", "You Make Me Feel So Good", "Pick Up The Pieces", and "I've Got What You Need".

Stevie Wonder — I Was Made To Love Her ... LP
Motown, 1967. Very Good+ .... $8.99 Just Sold Out!
Excellent work from Stevie Wonder – and a record that really has him emerging strongly as an adult soul singer! The set's got a joyous power that's undeniable – a sense of pride and place that really points the way at the Stevie of the 70s, and which has Wonder stretching out wonderfully on his vocals. Titles include the stellar "I Was Made To Love Her" – a cut with a choppy groove that made it one of the more unique crossover tunes of the late 60s, and with a complicated mix of vocal and musical bits that still always blows us away. Other tracks include "Baby Don't You Do It", "A Fool For You", "I'd Cry", "Send Me Some Lovin", and the ill-titled "Every Time I See You I Go Wild".
(Early Tamala pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout notch, some ring & edge wear, and some splitting on the bottom seam.)

new Commodores — Hot On The Tracks ... LP
Motown, 1976. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of funk and sweet soul, done with an incredibly well-crafted approach, and enough of a blend of the two styles to keep things interesting! The album's got a wonderfully tight quality – never slick or too smooth, but just nicely put together – commercial, but not so much so that it loses its soul. Titles include "Quick Draw", "Just To Be Close To You", "High On Sunshine", "Let's Get Started", "Can't Let You Tease Me", "Come Inside", and "Thumpin Music".

new Dynamic Superiors — Pure Pleasure ... LP
Motown, 1975. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet set of vocal group tunes from the Dynamic Superiors – arranged with a bit more of a high stepping groove than some of the other Motown work of the time. Backings are handled by a range of talents that includes Paul Riser, William Eaton, Al Gorgoni, and Horace Ott – but the real charm is the way the group's innocent harmony style puts over the lyrics, all of which are very strong tunes written by the team of Ashford & Simpson. Titles include "Face The Music", "Hit & Run Lovers", "Deception", "Pleasure", "Nobody's Gonna Change Me", "Feeling Mellow", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", and "Don't Give Up On Me Baby".

new Marvin Gaye — Here, My Dear ... LP
Motown, 1978. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together".

new Michael Jackson — Music & Me ... LP
Motown, 1973. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic early work by Michael Jackson – a record that has him stepping away from the Jackson 5, and really hitting a personal feel with some of the ballads – quite a surprise, given that his standout later solo work would be more focused on groovers! As with the Jackson 5 albums, the album was recorded with arrangements by some of Motown's best at the time – Freddie Perren, Gene Page, and James Carmichael! There's no real standout hits here, but the album's got some really great mellow soul numbers that have Michael stretching out from the sound of his group with his brothers – and titles include "Up Again", "Euphoria", "Doggin Around", "Morning Glow", and a nice version of "All The Things You Are".

new Bobby M — Blow – Rick James Presents Bobby M ... LP
Motown, 1982. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bobby M is Bobby Militello – a sweet-blowing saxman who did some great studio work back in the day – and who steps out here with some nicely grooving arrangements from Lenny White and Bernard Wright! The set's a strong blend of soulful fusion and 80s groove – just the kind of record you might expect when turning the Rick James name on the cover towards a more instrumental sound. But that doesn't mean that the whole album's instrumental – as Jean Carn sings on one cut, and Keely Curtis on another. And although Bobby's work on alto, tenor, and soprano sax is pretty nice, it's almost the keyboard work of Bernard Wright that really makes this album great – as the set's almost an extension of his classic GRP sessions from the same time! Titles include "Alto Man", "Let's Stay Together", "Redliner", "A Little Song For You", "Charlie's Backbeat", "Rome Tones", and "Blow".

new Mary Jane Girls — Only Four You ... LP
Motown, 1985. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lasting classic from the funky female foursome who were one of the biggest acts on Motown in the mid-80s – working here with super tight production and arrangements from Rick James – who also wrote all the songs on the record too! The girls' look is a bit dated, but their sound has surprisingly strong staying power – partly because of Rick's crossover version of funk in the rhythms, but also because of the way the vocal interplay still stays nice and catchy! The album's definitely commercial, but doesn't have that clunk that makes other efforts of this time from the time fall flat – and titles include "In My House", "I Betcha", "Girlfriend", Wild & Crazy Love", "Shadow Lover", "Break It Up", and "Lonely For You".

new Switch — Switch II ... LP
Motown, 1979. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the best album ever from Ohio funky soul combo Switch – and certainly proof that the hope of Motown in the 80s was in ensemble group funk! This second album holds up really well, and thanks to some sweet production by Bobby DeBarge and Jermaine Jackson, the record's got a warm soulful groove that hooks on the popular styles at the end of the 70s, but which keeps the group fresh and point to possibilies for the new decade. We really wish more singers and groups followed suit in the early part of the 80s! Titles include "Calling On All Girls", "I Call Your Name", "You're The One For Me", and "Go On Doin What You Feel".

new Various — Save The Children ... LP
Motown, 1973. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
This one was kind of Motown's answer to the Wattstax albums – a double live set, recorded in Chicago during the Push Expo, headed by Jesse Jackson. The tracks here are more of a mixed bag than some of those on the deeper soul Wattstax albums, but there are some nice moments overall, buried in the large mix of music and artists – many of whom didn't normally record for Motown. The tunes are familiar, but they're presented here in some nicely different live takes. Titles include "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers, "Country Preacher" by Cannonball Adderley, "This Child Of Mine" by Zulema, "Everybody Plays The Fool" by Main Ingredient, "Give Me Your Love" by Curtis Mayfield, "I've Gotta Be Me" by Sammy Davis Jr, "I Wanna Be Where You Are" by The Jackson 5, "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye, "Close To You" by Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager, "On A Clear Day/Killer Joe" by Roberta Flack & Quincy Jones, and "Sunshine" by The O'Jays. Also features some dialogue by Jesse Jackson.

new Commodores — Natural High ... LP
Motown, 1978. Used .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
A pivotal album for The Commodores – still very funky here, with a sound that stays true to their roots – yet also able to reach out into some of the mature mellow ballads that would make them a huge crossover act in years to come! James Carmichael arranges and produces here – really helping the group to find that key focus, and make some important use of the vocals of Lionel Richie. Mr R steps out strongly on the crossover hit "Three Times A Lady" – but the whole group more than holds their own on the funky killers "X Rated Movie", "Fire Girl", and "I Like What You Do" – as well as the great mellow groover "Say Yeah".

new Crusaders — Crusaders At Their Best ... LP
Motown, 1973. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
A really mixed bag of grooves from the Crusaders – but still an album that's quite tasty if you dig their work on the Chisa label! The record appears to be a greatest hits collection – with the "best" in the title – but it's more a summation of the styles they'd been digging on previous records, as some tracks feature a tight funky groove, others have a mellower electric one, and still others have a straight jazz approach. Highlights include the African-sounding "Time Has No Ending", the Sly Stone cover "Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin", and a nice reading of Wilton Felder's "Way Back Home".

new Grover Washington Jr — Anthology ... LP
Motown, Mid 70s/1981. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
A tasty 2LP set that brings together some of the best soul jazz tracks from Grover's years at the Kudu label! As is well remembered by beatheads, Grover had an amazing style at the time – a snakey electric groove that was perfect for the sounds of the early 70s – playing soprano sax in a spare yet funky way, working perfectly with arrangements by Bob James, and some killer bass and drum riffs that are forever being sampled and re-discovered today! The record picks a nice batch of hits and LP tracks, and all cuts are long and open-ended – in the tightly produced funky style that Grover pioneered. Tracks include "Mister Magic", "Feels So Good", "Trouble Man", "Snake Eyes", "Inner City Blues", "Mercy Mercy Me", and "Summer Song".

new Commodores — Nightshift ... LP
Motown, 1985. Used .... $0.49 Out Of Stock
By this point in their career, The Commodores have lost Lionel Richie and any sort of funk credibility they had from their early years – but they also somehow manage to reemerge with a great new talent for a sweet mellow groove! The title tune "Nightshift" was one of those tracks that crossed over massively at the time – but to our ears, it also kind of redeemed the group too – as it's got a surprisingly soulful quality that really got the group past the soppiness of their ballads and love songs – gliding along with an almost-righteous quality that makes it a nice later cap to an earlier Motown 70s groove. Other tunes on the album don't always fare as well, but there's still some nice moments here – tunes that benefit from some Dennis Lambert production and hit just the right kind of mellow groove to follow up on the spirit of the single. Tracks include "Nightshift", "Slip Of The Tongue", "Lay Back", "Lightin Up The Night", and "The Woman In My Life".

A pretty great record from Sammy – one that has a groovier feel than most of his other work from the time! The cover has Sammy hanging out with a bunch of hippies, and that feel is certainly carried through to the music – arranged by Billy Strange and George Rhodes, with bouncy production by Jimmy Bowen that takes Sam way past his years at Reprise. Kicks off with a great version of "Spinning Wheel", and includes the tracks "You Better Sit Down Kids", "For Once In My Life", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", and "In The Ghetto".

A later entry in the 60s run of classic live albums by Motown's bigger artists – and a set that shows Smokey and the group really opening up from their studio sides! There's still a bit of Motown soul here, but the Miracles also sing strongly on work that ranges from jazz to classic vocal group material – all given a hip late 60s twist! There's some relatively full backings on the set, but the vocals are upfront in the recording – and titles include "Up Up & Away", "Valley Of The Dolls", "Once In A Lifetime", "Mickey's Monkey", "Yester Love", "Poinciana", "Up Up & Away", "I Second That Emotion", and "Ooo Baby Baby".

new Gordon Staples & The String Thing — Strung Out ... LP
Motown, 1970. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A damn funky record – way more so than you might expect from the "string" in the title! The group's kind of an answer to the Soulful Strings ensemble headed by Richard Evans for Cadet/Concept in Chicago – and like that group, it mixes up funky rhythms with some sweet large orchestrations – in a style that's almost a precursor of blacksploitation funk to come in the 70s! Paul Riser handles arrangements – very much in the same spirit of Evans – and he picks up a hip Motown groove that bridges sweeping soul and gritty funk – all played to perfection by an ensemble led by Gordon Staples, and featuring players from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra! There's lots of funky nuggets in the set – and titles include excellent originals like "Strung Out", "Toonie", and "Sounds of the Zodiac" – plus "The April Fools", "The Look Of Love", "Get Down", "If Your Love Were Mine", "Someday We'll Be Together", and "From A Heart That's True To Only You".

Tony Bennett — For Once In My Life ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good .... $4.99
A record that has a Motown hit for its title, but the album's got a depth that marks Bennett as one of the most complex singers of his generation – way past the broad belter of ballads from the 50s, and an all-adult male vocalist whose sound was essential to the sophistication of the mainstream in the late 60s. Many tunes are standards, given lush arrangements by Torrie Zito and Marion Evans – sung by Tony with that deep voice that nobody else could ever hope to match! Lamont Dozier — Out Here On My Own ... LP
ABC, 1973. Very Good- .... $9.99
Fantastic soul from Lamont Dozier – his first LP as a solo artist, and one of the best debuts of the 70s! The record has a quality that's impossible to describe accurately – but it's kind of a post-Motown full-on approach to soul that mixes strings, piano, and that wall of sound groove that was one of Dozier's biggest contributions to the Motor City. Surprisingly, the album's produced by McKinley Jackson – leader of The Politicians, who provided regular backing for Dozier's HDH productions of the time. The real strength, though, is Dozier's voice – which is produced here in a compressed way that brings up the better raspy qualities of his style, juxtaposing them with the tightness of the arrangements in a mode that's similar to Bobby Womack's work of the time. However, Dozier's songwriting is way way better than Womack's by this point – and the album's filled with anthemic soul cuts like "Fish Aint' Bitin", "Out Here On My Own", "Take Off Your Make Up", "Trying To Hold Onto My Woman", and "Let Me Make Love To You".

Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People".

Marvin Gaye — In Our Lifetime ... LP
Tamla, 1981. Near Mint- .... $5.99
Marvin Gaye's last album for Motown – and a wonderful cap to a great run of sexy soul for the 70s – filled with great mellow grooves that rival the genius of his earlier work in the decade! There's a glowing, slow-burning feel to some of the best numbers here – a vibe that's right out of the I Want You era, with touches of Let's Get It On too. But there's also a slightly more mature approach too – a bit more cautious, even when confident – no doubt informed by the struggles of his Here My Dear album, which also echoes somewhat in this set. The record's more proof that even when not coming across with a classic hit, Marvin's still very much at the top of his game – an artist that stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries – with none of the too-commercial or too-dated modes that held other folks back! Titles include "Life Is For Learning", "Praise", "Funk Me", "Far Cry", "Love Party", and "Love Me Now Or Love Me Later".

Honey Cone — Take Me With You ... LP
Hot Wax, 1970. Very Good .... $24.99
A brilliant early set from Honey Cone – and a perfect illustration of the way the trio really moved past simple girl group modes of the 60s! There's a bold, proud, righteous tone to the record right from the start – thanks to these soaringly soulful vocals from the girls, and these fuzzy arrangements from Tony Camillo – who seems to borrow a bit from the more righteous modes of Norman Whitfield at Motown, then give things a bit more of a girl soul twist! The combination is amazing, and the album's rock-solid all the way through – filled with great original tunes that really keep a unified feel throughout – and titles include "Are You Man Enough", "Take Me With You", "Girls It Ain't Easy", "While You're Out Looking For Sugar", "The Feeling's Gone", "Sunday Morning People", and "Take My Love".

One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses!

Tamla, 1970. Very Good- .... $8.99
A sweet groover from the Marvelettes – and a record that completely re-casts their sound for the Motown of the 70s! The group's still got the great soprano harmonies that made their early hits so wonderful, but the arrangements on the set are deeper and more sophisticated – taking them into hipper adult soul territory that we really love. Smokey Robinson produced, and wrote a lot of tracks for the set – and the backings are the work of Wade Marcus and David Van De Pitte – both well matched, and giving the album a fully unified sound. Titles include "So I Can Love You", "Marionette", "A Breathtaking Guy", "Uptown", "Someday We'll Be Together", and "Our Lips Seem To Rhyme Everytime".

Rare Earth — Get Ready ... LP
Rare Earth, 1969. Very Good .... $6.99
The first really major album from Rare Earth – issued on their own self-named subsidiary of Motown! The set's a perfect blend of the rich undercurrents of the heady Detroit scene of the late 60s – at one level a tripped-out rock record with styles that almost hint at MC5, at another level a batch of blue-eyed funky soul, with keen appreciation for the grooves coming out of the headier end of the Motor City indie spectrum! There's lots of tripped-out guitar work on the set – reminiscent of contemporary work by Dennis Coffey and George Clinton – mixed with a Mitch Ryder, R&B-inspired vocal style that actually comes across pretty darn well. Added to this is the group's flat-out ability to jam – showcased best in the side-long title cut "Get Ready" – a massive jammer which runs for nearly 22 minutes, and takes up all of side two! Other tracks include "Train To Nowhere", "Magic Key", "Tobacco Road", and "In Bed".

Ruffin & Kendrick — Ruffin & Kendrick ... LP
RCA, 1987. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A late 80s duo set from former Temptations David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks! The Ruffin & Kendrick album for RCA (we didn't leave the -s off Eddie's last name, that's how he was billed at the time) finds both in excellent form vocally, and rather than making a neo-classic Motown vibe for the record, the production is very much in the 80s modern soul mode of bigger hits of the day. It's got bright synth soul, a bit of boogie, and other other mid-to-late 80s modes that should have made this one a real win commercially – especially given the soulful weight and importance of the singers and genuine emotion in their performances. Temptations — Temptations Greatest Hits 2 ... LP

During the late 60s, the Temptations career really started to take off – and the group emerged to become a landmark vocal ensemble with a groundbreaking effect on the history of soul and funk. Working with Norman Whitfield, they forged a righteous heavy soul sound that was quite different than that of their Motown contemporaries – filled with politics and social consciousness, laid out in a blend of heavy basslines and full fuzzy guitars that really kicked ass. This second volume of the Temps' greatest hits dips heavily into those key years – and it includes killer cuts like "Cloud Nine", "Ball of Confusion", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Run Away Child, Running Wild", "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down", "I Wish It Would Rain", and "Psychedelic Shack".

new 21st Creation — Break Thru ... LP
Gordy, 1978. Very Good .... $3.99
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a strident uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson – and you can hear the group's style to best effect on tracks like their remake of Marvin Gaye's "After The Dance", Willie Hutch's "You Gotta Dance To My Music", or the hard grooving "Thanks For Saving Me". new Various — Boy Meets Girl ... LP
Stax, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold .... $11.99
A classic set from 1969 – issued as a special project by Stax in their first year after parting with Atlantic, almost as a message to that label that they were more than capable of handling things on their own! The double-length set brings together the label's best male and female artists, each in duets that largely only ever appeared on this LP. Other soul labels – like Vee Jay or Motown – had had good luck with the male/female duet sound, but the quality of Stax's singers puts them right up there with the top of the genre – as singers like William Bell, Mavis Staples, Carla Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd all seeem to work perfectly together. Titles include "All I Have To Do Is Dream" and "I Need You A Woman" by William Bell & Carla Thomas, "Love's Sweet Sensation" and "I Thank You" by William Bell & Mavis Staples, "Ain't That Good" and "Piece Of My Heart" by Eddie Floyd & Mavis Staples, "It's Unbelievable (How You Control My Soul)" and "I'm Trying" by Pervis Staples & Carla Thomas, "It's Our Time" and "Don't Make Me A Storyteller" by Eddie Floyd & Carla Thomas, and "Soul-a-Lujah", sung by the whole group. 22 tracks in all.

new David Ruffin — So Soon We Change ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ .... $2.99 Just Sold Out!
Warm and wonderful soul from David Ruffin – key proof that the singer could keep on going strong, long after his earlier fame at Motown! The record's got a new sense of sophistication that really breaks David into new territory – a style that's nicely different than the backings Ruffin got from Van McCoy in his later Motown years – and which opens up a more mature sound, courtesy of producer Don Davis – who's casting Ruffin in the same blend of rough and smooth that worked so well for The Dramatics! There's a sophistication here that's completely sublime – a sound that's right up there with Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware – and most tunes hit a mellow or midtempo mode that's totally great! Tracks include "Chain On The Brain", "Break My Heart", "Morning Sun Looks Blue", "Let Your Love Rain Down On Me", "So Soon We Change", and "Sexy Dancer".
(Cover has a factory sticker and promo stamp.)

new Marvin Gaye with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi — Marvin Gaye & His Girls ... LP
Tamla, 1969. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic batch of Motown duets from Marvin Gaye and some of his best female co-stars – with a few contributions apiece from Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell! Although other artists explored the male/female duet mode back in the 60s, few did it as well as Marvin – thanks in part to a warmly sensitive vocal approach that made his duets come across as personal, loving conversations – and not the too-gimmicky modes used to push the big stars over at other labels. Marvin & Mary Wells sing "Once Upon A Time", "What's The Matter With You Baby", "Together", and "Deed I Do". Marvin & Kim Weston sing "I Want You 'Round", "What Good Am I Without You", and "It Takes Two". And Marvin and Tammi Terrell sing "Your Precious Love", "Little Ole Girl, Little Ole Boy", "I Can't Help But Love You", and "Good Lovin Ain't Easy To Come By".
(Original Tamla pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a cut corner, seam splitting, some wear, and some marker.)

new Marvelettes — Sophisticated Soul ... LP
Tamla, 1968. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic girl group soul by one of Motown's best uptown groups. Tracks include "My Baby Must Be A Magician", "Your Love Can Save Me", "What's Easy For Two Is Harder For One", "Here I Am Baby", and "You're The One For Me Bobby". Nice stuff, and unlike a lot of other Motown LPs from the time, this one's not filled with covers of other tracks, and has a lot of nice original material.
(Cover has some wear, a bit of seam splitting, staining along the top, and pen on the front and back. Labels have some pen.)

new 100 Proof Aged In Soul — 100 Proof Aged In Soul ... LP
Hot Wax, 1972. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stone burner from 100 Proof Aged In Soul – a group who really take off with this tight second record! The album's a classic from the days when soul music ruled AM radio on both sides of the tracks – and the rest of the album is equally great – packing that tight post-Motown punch that made the Hot Wax label one of the best proponents of Detroit soul in the 70s! Arrangements are by a huge amount of early 70s heavyweights – McKinley Jackson, Paul Riser, and HB Barnum – and the set was produced by General Johnson and Greg Perry, in a style that soars along with the Chairmen Of The Board albums of the time. Titles include "Words", "I Don't Care If I Never Get Over You", "Everything Good Is Bad", "Ghetto Girl", "Nothing Sweeter Than Love", and "Don't You Wake Me".
(Cover has some wear, splitting on the top and bottom seams, and a cutout notch.)
Also available: 100 Proof Aged In Soul (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD $26.99

new Parliament — Rhenium ... LP
HDH (UK), Early 70s. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fuzzy and funky soul from Detroit! This LP compiles the group's first incredible album – Osmium – plus some other singles from the time. Parliament at this point are much closer to earlier Funkadelic than on their later work – rocking hard with a very guitar-heavy groove, sounding a lot more tripped out than when they're riding the mothership, and forming a key link between the Motown soul tradition and that of Detroit noise rockers like MC5 or The Stooges. Cuts include "Loose Booty", "Little Old Country Boy", "My Automobile", "Red Hot Mama", "Come In Out Of The Rain", and "I Call My Baby Pussycat". Very trippy, very acidy, and very very wild!

new Barrett Strong — Love Is You ... LP
Coup, Late 70s. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An gem of a later album from early Motown hero Barrett Strong – a set recorded back in Michigan, but with the same warm modern soul groove of his album on Capitol! The album's surprisingly great – with loads of original tunes that showcase a side of Strong's writing skills that we wouldn't have expected – and overall, the grooves here mix upbeat numbers with some even better mellower ones, in a style that sounds a fair bit like Johnny Bristol's work at the end of the 70s. A great indie soul set, and one with a great bit of depth! Titles include "I'm So In Love With You", "You're A Mighty Good Lover", "You Are My One & Only Love", "All I Wanna Do Is Be With You", "You Turn Me On", "When You're Truly In Love", "You Make Me Feel The Way I Do", and "Love Is You".

new Temptations — All Directions ... LP
Gordy, 1972. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Temptations going in all directions – and all of them pretty darn groovy too! The set's still heavy on the solid, righteous sound of Norman Whitfield – who gives some of the best cuts that psychedelic soul imprint he really perfected with the group – a quality that has a lot more funk than other Motown acts were getting at the time – yet still lets the harmonies soar! A few other numbers showcase a more mature ballad style – different than the sweet soul of their roots, and definitely with an adult vibe we really love. Titles include heavy funk on "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On", and their great cover of Isaac Hayes "Do Your Thing" – some mellow mature covers like "Love Woke Me Up This Morning" and "First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" – plus the long version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and the tracks "Mother Nature" and "Run Charlie Run".

new Undisputed Truth — Smokin' ... LP
Warner/Whitfield, 1979. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Undisputed Truth and their late 70s space funk mode! They may have moved away from their Motown pop soul roots, but they're still getting production from Norman Whitfield, who knows how to keep the stormin sound that always worked best with the band. Players on the session include Wah Wah Watson, Walt Downing, and Jack Ashford – and the uptempo tracks have a nice, clubbier vibe that's a bit of an update of the band's approach of the preceding few years, not really disco, but more of an extended dancefloor groove hat's still pretty funky! There's also some nice moogy touches on this one!
(Cover has a cutout notch and some light wear.)

new Stevie Wonder — Stevie Wonder Greatest Hits ... LP
Tamla, 1968. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of 60s Stevie Wonder work for Motown – almost a greatest hit of the label's greatest hits series – given how wonderful most of the tunes are! The set does a great job of moving through the full range of Stevie's 60s talents – from instrumental groovers heavy on drums and harmonica, to vocal tracks that show the growing power of Wonder's appeal – a maturing, magnificent style that would set a whole new tone for soul in the 70s! Titles include "Contract On Love", "Fingertips Part 2", "I Was Made To Love Her", "Work Out Stevie Work Out", "Uptight", "Castles In The Sand", "Hey Harmonica Man", "I'm Wondering", and the always great "Hey Love".
(Tamla pressing. Cover has light wear and a small split on the top seam.)

new Stevie Wonder — Talking Book ... LP
Tamla, 1972. Used Gatefold .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the classics, and an album that's filled with a sense of majesty and power that will knock you dead – despite the stupid cover of Stevie sitting on a hill, playing in the dirt! By this point, Stevie knows he's on top of the world – and he's honing the sophisticated experiments of the previous few albums into a tightly woven pop sound that would pay Motown a huge dividend for letting him take chances with his music! Includes the big hits "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" and "Superstition", plus the amazing mellow synthesizer classic "You've Got It Bad Girl" and the fuzzy funky "Maybe Your Baby". Great stuff, and one that won't let you down!

new Marvin Gaye — Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye (Natural Resources) ... LP
Tamla/Natural Resources, 1961. Used .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing early work from Marvin Gaye – a set that's more jazz than soul, with a really unique sort of sound! Marvin's vocals are sublime, but in a completely different way than on his later hits – almost a bit broken at times, next to some very broken-down piano lines used in the album's spare instrumentation – an off-tune keyboard that makes for a very heartfelt feel to the record, one that's more indie charm than Motown polish! Gaye's got a hint of Nat Cole at times, Sam Cooke at others – although without the poise of either – and although we'd love the record on its own, it's even more amazing as a key starting point for one of the most soulful evolutions of the 60s. Titles include "How High The Moon", "Love For Sale", "Always", "Easy Living", "Witchcraft", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "Never Let You Go".
(Late 70s pressing on Natural Resources. Shrinkwrap has a small hole in front.)

new Rose Royce/Norman Whitfield — Car Wash – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MCA, 1976. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
A solid bit of heavy funk – and one of the last strong-selling soundtracks of the blacksploitation era! Sure, you know the hit "Car Wash", but there's plenty of other great numbers that rank the 2LP set right up there with the best of its genre. There's a lot of nice instrumentals on the album that feature a tight smooth funky sound – with good work on clavinet, wah wah guitar, and horns – all quite different than the usual work of Whitfield and Rose Royce at the time. The group do a good job on the vocal cuts, working in that soulful early 70s Motown mode that Whitfield was working on with other acts – and the whole album's as great a debut for Rose Royce as anyone could have hoped for. Features the hit title cut, plus "I Wanna Get Next To You", "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is", "Zig Zag", "Mid Day DJ Theme", "I'm Going Down", "Crying", "Doing What Comes Naturally", and "Righteous Rhythm". The Pointer Sisters sing on one track, "You Gotta Believe".

new Leon Ware — Inside Is Love ... LP
Fabulous/TK, 1979. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
This one's post-Motown, pre-Elektra in Leon's career – and it's a nice batch of grooves that has Ware operating in the modern soul style he'd use to greater fame on bigger cuts a few years later. The best cut on the album is "What's Your Name" – an extremely catchy two-step number, with a hook that will ring in your head long after the track is over. The whole thing's pretty nice, though – and we always love Leon's approach to writing a sexy soul number. Titles include "Try It Out", "Club Sashay", "Inside Your Love", and "Love Is A Simple Thing".
(Cover has a cutout notch & ringwear.)

new Stevie Wonder — Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits Vol 2 ... LP
Tamla, 1971. Used .... $2.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet set of late 60s groovers – some of Stevie's best work for Motown, and proof that even at a young age, his talents were rich enough to warrant a second volume of greatest hits! Titles hardly need introduction – as the album includes classics like "Heaven Help Us All", "My Cherie Amour", "Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Da Day", "Signed Sealed Delivered", "For Once In My Life", "If You Really Love Me", and "Yester Me, Yester You, Yesterday".
(Cover has some wear, aging, and some marker in one corner, with some splitting on the spine and bottom seam. Label has some marker.)
