Mose AllisonAutumn Song ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1959. New Copy .... $4.99 11.98
Mose Allison's last album for Prestige Records – before moving onto even bigger fame at Columbia and Atlantic during the 60s! Unlike Allison's later sets, this one is mostly instrumental – but there are a few sweet vocal tracks that bring out the hip, rootsy lyrical modes that would make Mose a big hit with the mod scene overseas – including the classic "Eyesight To The Blind", plus "That's All Right" and "Do Nothing Till You Here From Me". The remaining piano trio sides have a great rollicking groove – rootsy, yet slightly modern too – with bass by Addison Farmer and drums from Ronnie Free – on titles that include "Promenade", "It's Crazy", "Strange", "Autumn Song", and "Groovin High".

Mose AllisonWord From Mose Allison ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1964. New Copy .... $15.99
The word from Mose is mighty darn hip – served up here in a sweet Atlantic Records session that seems to really hone into all the mod influences his music would have in the 60s! The rootsy quality of Allison's earlier records is still firmly in place – but the group also has a tighter feel that's almost more soul jazz – thanks, in part, to work from Ben Tucker on bass – in a groove that's similar to some of his own contributions to 60s jazz. Titles include a great version of "Foolkiller" – one of Mose's greatest tracks – plus "One Of These Days", "Days Like These", "Your Red Wagon", "Look Here", "I'm Not Talking", and "New Parchman".

new Mose AllisonDown Home Piano ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1958. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Just Sold Out!
An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've only heard Allison's better-known numbers with singing, you'll really be floored here at his skills as an instrumentalist – particularly in the way he manages to play the piano with deep-down roots, yet also hit some stunningly modern tones as well! Accompaniment is by Addison Farmer on bass, plus either Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Dinner On The Ground", "Crepuscular Air", "Mule", "Creek Bank", "Town", "Devil In The Cane Field", "The Minstrels", "Moon & Cypress", "Carnival", and "Mojo Woman".

new Mose AllisonWestern Man/Mose In Your Ear ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1971/1972. New Copy .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
2 very groovy records by Mose Allison – both recorded during the early 70s, when he was hipping up his bag a bit! Western Man is a really amazing record – with some good funky tracks! The real key here is the fact that Mose plays electric piano and is working in a hip trio with Billy Cobham playing some funky and soulful drums! We don't know what kind of piano Mose is using, but on the tracks where he's playing the electric, it's got a jagged and raw kind of sound, almost recalling the one used on the Atlantic albums by Eugene McDaniels. Includes the great funky track "If You Only Knew", which has a real McDaniels kind of feel – plus the cuts "Western Man", "Mountains", "Ask Me Nice", "Night Club", and "Meadows". Mose In Your Ear is a live set – one that's a bit more back-to-basics than the first, but still grooving with a unique blend of New Orleans soul and Northern jazz influences, his own particular brand of music, timeless from the day it was born! The setting here is a live one, and Mose is playing with a trio that includes Clyde Flowers on bass and Eddie Charlton on drums. The album features a number of strong originals – including "Look What You Made Me Do", "Powerhouse", "I Don't Worry About A Thing", and "Don't Forget To Smile" – plus versions of "The Seventh Son" and "Fool's Paradise".
(CD case has a cutout notch.)

Al Cohn & Zoot Sims — Al & Zoot ... CD
Coral (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $9.99
Tremendous horn interplay from the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – and a record that may well be one of the best illustrations of their famous magic together in the 50s! The record's got a way of focusing energy, yet letting each player state themselves clearly and cleanly – almost a perfect small group variation of the larger jazz modes of a generation before – carried out here by Cohn and Sims with a great balance of tone and timing, modernism and swing! There's an excellent rhythm group on the date – Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulus on drums – who almost bring in a slightly soulful undercurrent, which works especially well on Sims' solo moments. Tracks include "Two Funky People", "Just You Just Me", "The Wailing Boat", "You're A Lucky Guy", "Brandy & Beer", and "Chasing The Blues".
Also available: Al & Zoot ... LP $19.99

new Don Cavalli — Temperamental (with bonus CD) ... LP
A Rag (France), 2012. New Copy LP & CD .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
Raw raspy work from Don Cavalli – a weirdly offbeat singer that grooves in sort of a 60s mix of blues and soul and rock! There's some nicely rootsy touches to the music, but things are still pretty groovy too – almost mod in execution, yet never with a straight 60s feel – almost as if Mose Allison and Georgie Fame are being filtered through the aesthetics of an earlier generation, then thrown back into some weird sci-fi version of mid-century! The approach is a bit hard to describe in words (in case you can't tell!), but it's pretty catchy throughout – especially when the tunes bubble with keyboards, steel guitar, and even a bit of banjo. Titles include "Birthday Suit", "You & My Zundapp", "Gonna Love You", "The Greatest", "Santa Rita", "Me & My Baby", and "Garden Of Love".
(Includes CD version of the album as well!)

new Al Cohn & Zoot Sims — You N Me ... CD
Mercury/Universal (Japan), 1960. New Copy .... $10.99 Out Of Stock
One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the sharp, thoughtful mode that marked both Cohn and Sims' sessions – but also a bit more earthy, too – possibly because they've got Mose Allison in the combo on piano. The album includes the incredible spare sax-only track "Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones", which is an extremely haunting track that sounds unlike anything the pair had ever done together – and other titles have the full quintet playing, tunes that include "The Opener", "The Note" and "You N Me".
