✨✧ Willie RodriguezMi Montuno ... LP
Fonseca/Andale, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Willie Rodriguez at his 60s best – driving his combo with a fire and fury that few other Latin leaders could match! The grooves here are raw and tight, right from the start – a recasting of Cuban descarga modes into an even tighter combo setting – with percussion leading the way on just about every cut, topped with some sweet horn solos and vocals by a young and soulful Adalberto Santiago! The album's a real shining jewel in the early catalog of Fonseca Records – and titles include "Mi Montuno", "Mozambique", "Cimarron", "Colorin Colorado", "El Ritmo Lo Traigo Yo", and "Monte Adentro". Les Baxter & 101 StringsLatin Holiday (aka Que Mango) ... LP
Alshire, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
A repackaged version of the album Que Mango – a later album, but one that still features Les doing some great Latiny bits – heading up the 101 Strings ensemble, for a sweeping and groovy kind of sound! The whole album's very similar to some of Les' Capitol work from the early 60s, but has a slightly more modern twist – including the use of electric bass underneath the arrangements, which creates a really nice gently loping groove! One of Les' best – despite the late date – and with tracks that include "Jungle Montuno", "Que Mango", "Bocha Chica", "Affair In Aruba", and "Tropicando". Very groovy, baby! LP, Vinyl record album
(Quad-Spectrum pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ Ricardo RayThree Dimensions – A Goza With Ricardo Ray ... LP
Fonseca/Andale, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99
Amazing early work from Ricardo Ray – material that's got a lot more fire than some of his better-known sides from the 70s! The album's a stone cooker all the way through – played by a tight young group with lots of descarga energy in their blood, and some of the pre-Latin Soul styles that were creeping around the New York scene – that cool combo sound that Joe Cuba was getting with his own group. Bobby Cruz is already with Ray at this point, and he does a great job on the vocal numbers on the album – but the real treat is Ricardo's group – who play with a hard jazzy intensity on the best tracks. These include the descarga "Here Comes Richie Ray", the jazz mambo "Jango", the jazz descarga "Theme", and the storming "Mi Guaguanco". Other cuts include "Summer Love", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and "El Montuno De Hoy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SapoSapo (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Bell/Big Pink (South Korea), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer bit of Latin funk from the west coast scene of the 70s – the only album we've ever seen from Sapo, but a set that almost blows away the efforts of bigger groups like Malo or El Chicano! There's a bit more funk in the mix here than in some of the group's contemporaries – a leaner, more soulful sound that's totally great – and topped with these cool compressed vocals from singer Richard Bean, who's got a very distinctive approach! The rhythms are wonderful – and the album explodes with great tracks that combine equal parts Latin, funk, and soul – all in a way that really lives up to the best promise of such a combination – and never falls too heavily on one or the other side of the fence. Titles include the killer break track "Been Had", the slamming electric jam "Ritmo Del Corazon", the fast modal groover "It's The Music", and the massive "Sapo's Montuno", with some very lively solos! Other cuts include "Nina", "Get It On", and "Can't Make It". CD

✨✧ Lyman Woodard OrganizationLive At Last – 1974 to 1993 ... CD
Uuquipleu, 1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer live work from the Lyman Woodard Trio – and a split set that shows much much the group kept grooving on the Detroit scene, even after their initial early 70s fame! The first half of the CD features material from 1974 – recorded at JJ's Lounge in the Shelby Hotel in the Motor City – very jazz-based, with soaring organ from Lyman himself, guitar from Ron English, and drums from Leonard King. The whole thing's nicely recorded, with a strong focus on that sweet and super-dope tone that's always made Woodard so great – as you'll hear on the cuts "Even Today", "Jumpin The Blues", "If You Could See Me Now", and "ESP". The second half of the set is from 20 years later – recorded in 1993 at Sully's Roadhouse – with the same trio, equally tight and funky! In fact, the 1993 set's almost funkier, as it's got some originals by Woodard that are mighty nice – the titles "Lyman's Montuno" and "Belle Isle Daze" – next to the cuts "I Got A Woman", "Drown In My Own Tears", and "A Fine Romance". ✨✧ VariousCult Cargo – Salsa Boricua De Chicago ... CD
Numero, Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible third coast salsa from the late 70s – amazing stuff from the orquestras of Carlos Ruiz and his Ebirac label – made by singers and players in Chicago's Puerto Rican community of the period that stands up just as well today! Chicago salsa, unlike more nationally popular styles, was rooted in the city's rich Puerto Rican community. They cover material adapted from traditionals and more, done with less pan-Caribbean derived sounds than the Cuban-rooted salseros of NYC and Miami. As fondly remembered as the players of the Chicago salsa scene are by the older Puerto Rican community, records by Orquestas La Justicia, La Solucion, Juventad Tipica '78, Tipica Leal '79 and others are terribly hard to find. Not only has Numero managed to compile a terrific batch of songs, the sound quality is impeccable, too! Titles include "Plena Matrimonial" by Ebirac All-Stars featuring La Calandria & Ramito, "Stone Flower", "Alegre Jibarito", "Guaguanco Coroco" and more by La Justicia, "Afro Theme" and "Ano Nuevo Y Reyes" by Juventud Tipica '78, "A Bailar Son Montuno", "El Gordo Y El Flaco" and "Mini Minoso" by La Solucion, "Mozambique" by La Solucion featuring Mongo Santamaria, "Donde Estabas" by Tipica Leal '79 and more, plus the bonus "Ebirac Radio Spot". The booklet is lavish, too – full of notes and photos that that make it all the more revelatory – providing a historical perspective that can't be overpraised! CD
(Includes slipcover and large booklet.)

✨✧ Corporacion LatinaTry It & You'll Like It ... LP
Ultra Music Gem, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great bit of Puerto Rican salsa from the 70s – one of the few albums we've ever seen from this 70s group! The set looks like a boogaloo album from the outset – from its TV-joke title, and its cool cover that sports a die-cut looking into the belly of a bikini-clad model – but overall, the sound is pure 70s all the way, a mix of montuno and guaguanco tracks. Includes the driving percussive number "Invocacion A Los Espiritus", plus the tracks "Siciliana", "Venezuela", "Vagabundo", and "Amigo". Arrangements by Johnny Delgado, Angel Cruz, and Ramon Lozada. ✨✧ Ebirac All Stars & OthersEbirac All Stars ... LP
Ebirac/Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic salsa sounds from Chicago – a city that's never been as well-known for the music as others on the coast – but which was home to the tiny but great Ebirac label – whose work is collected on this set! The package is an imagined compilation of key cuts that were only issued as singles – a format that dominated most of the label – and styles are heavily in the Puerto Rican side of the spectrum, as most of the groups here share that cultural legacy – as well as a few common players as well! Titles include "Donde Estabas" by Tipica Leal 79, "Las Frutas Del Pais" by La Justicia, "Plena Matrimonial Contraversia" by Ebirac All Stars, "A Bailar Son Montuno" by La Solucion, "Ano Nuevo Y Reyes" by Juventud Tipica 78, and "Under The Sun" by Under The Sun Orchestra. ✨✧ MantecaRitmo Y Sabor ... LP
GRC, Late 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful album of Latin percussion – tone of few we've ever seen from Cuban percussionist Lazaro Pla, aka Manteca – a date recorded in Miami in the 70s, and filled with lots of raw percussion jams! There's a massive amount of bongo work here, mostly in a very spare setting – but some of the most compelling cuts also have a bit of funk too – added drums and basslines that kick things wonderfully, and make the record even more worth seeking out. Despite the 70s date, the whole thing has a raw descarga approach all the way through – just tight jamming in a real old school mode, without any vocals or polished production. Titles include the killer break tracks "Afro Funky" and "Cosas De Manteca" – plus "Abacua", "Son Montuno", "Rumbon En Casa De Cando", and "Gozando El Timbal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray Perez Y Perucho TorcatThey Do It ... LP
Pyraphon/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really raw cooker from the great Ray Perez – an album that's overflowing with heavy percussion, hard-edged piano, and some mighty soulful vocals from Perucho Torcat – all with a vibe that feels like some lost New York indie Latin session from the mid 60s! The arrangements are nice and lean, with this great downturning sense of darkness on the piano at many spots – echoed by these really wonderful vocals from Perucho, who's often produced with a bit of echo – which makes some of his spoken expressions sound especially great! The record has a very lively, spontaneous vibe throughout – and titles include "Reproche", "Muchacho Loco", "Rompelo", "Son Montuno", "Palo Binito", "Lenga De Hacha", and "Echatelo Al Hombro". Excellent collection of tracks from Salsoul's great Latin series from the mid 70's! Despite the "disco" in the title, most of the tracks on here are straight salsa, and the LP features tracks like "Bamboleate" by Libre, "Trompeta En Montuno" by Chocolate, "Adelante" by Cachao, "Kimbo Kimbisa" by Graciela, "Anabacoa" by Grupo Folklorico, and "Chico & The Man" by Joe Bataan.
