A great lost performance from Michael Jackson – finally brought to light! And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely!

We know, we know, you're wondering "Why is this here?". And truthfully, if it weren't for the fact that Quincy was at the top of his game when he produced this version of The Wiz, we'd write it off as total crap too, but there are a few moments peppered in here and there that will make this worthwhile to some of you out there! Skip past "Ease On Down The Road" to the "Emerald City Sequence", "Poppy Girls", 'So You Wanted To See The Wizard" and "Home".

Bold work from saxophonist James Carter – soulful one minute, modern the next – and definitely the sort of session that shows the full range of his mighty powers! Carter's possibly best known for his work on tenor, but the date also has him playing flute, baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet – all in ways that really shifts the mood of the record from track to track, yet never with a too-schizophrenic feel. Producer Michael Cuscuna's got a great ear for the most classic tones in Carter's horn – or horns – and the other players here include Dwight Adams on trumpet, DD Jackson on piano, Rodney Jones on guitar, and Victor Lewis on bass. Titles include "Bro Dolphy", "Sussa Nita", "Rapid Shave", "Bossa JC", "Tenderly", "Hymn Of The Orient", "Shadowy Sands", and "Dodo's Bounce".

A slinky set of organ jazz & soul by The Filthy Six for Acid Jazz – modern combo with a profound love for and mastery of mid-to-late 60s funky organ combos – as sly as can be The Fox! This is a group that knows what they want and what they can do – delivering vintage style, though modern relevance. The originals are great for showing the group's skill at a number of classic Hammond organ styles, be it jazzy or funky – and there's a couple of cool covers, including adaptations of Off The Wall and J5 era Michael Jackson – Girlfriend" featuring guest vocalist Brendan Reilly plus "Never Can Say Goodbye". Bold 80s soul from Jermaine Jackson – a set that's heavy on beats and keyboards, but which still leaves enough space for his gentler-toned vocals! The upbeat tracks here sometimes get a bit dramatic, which makes us like the ballads more – sweeter-styled numbers that are much better suited to Jermaine's singing approach – but even those upbeat numbers show the Jackson family ear for crossover soul! Titles include "Give A Little Love", "Precious Moments", "Our Love Story", "I Think It's Love", "Voices In The Dark", "Words Into Action", and "Do You Remember Me". CD features lots of bonus tracks – including "Do You Remember Me (Bruce Forest rmx)", "Closest Thing To Perfect (ext)", "I Think It's Love (ext rmx)", "Do You Remember Me (Michael Omartin rmx)", and "Do You Remember Me (Jellybean rmx)".

A poppy record, but a great one too – and a surprisingly enduring pleasure from the Streetwise scene of the 80s! This is the album that started it all – the wave of younger groups that would come into play in 80s soul strongly by the latter half of the decade – New Edition with its now-classic lineup that includes a young Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, and the Bell, Biv, Devoe trio! The album's really the brainchild of producer Maurice Starr, who's also working here with a fair bit of help from Michael Jonzun and a bit of guidance from Arthur Baker – all of whom serve up tunes that are sweet and catchy, and which are almost an 80s update of the sound of the Jackson 5 or Five Stairsteps from a decade before – given a hipper, more streetsoul undercurrent. Titles include "She Gives Me A Bang", "Pass The Beat", "Ooh Baby", "Popcorn Love", "Candy Girl", "Should Never Have Told Me", and "Gimme Your Love".

It's a few years after Freda's big hit "Band of Gold", and she's recording here in a very different mode! The record is produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland, with arrangements by a number of different talents, like McKinley Jackson, Tony Camillo, and Michael Smith – and the overall sound is much more sophisticated than on some of Freda's earlier work. The vocals are especially sharp – quite mature, and almost in a mode that points towards later work by singers like Jean Carn or Marlena Shaw during the late 70s. Includes the nice midtempo groover "We've Gotta Find A Way Back To Love", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Mood For Love", "Reaching Out", "Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right", "Mother Misery's Favorite Child", and "Right Back Where I Started From".

Greg's definitely showing off all his chops on this one – working with help from a huuuge array of famous guest stars – including The Pointer Sisters, James Ingram, Howard Hewett, Jackie Jackson, Michael Jackson, Robbie Nevil, and others. And while the bulk of the record really shows the influence of these mainstream 80s soul artists – and not always in a good way – the record also sports a brilliant tune done with Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, the sweetly grooving "Lazy Nina", which sounds like the best work off Fagan's Nightfly, and has Greg and Don duetting on vocals! Jr Parker gets some great help from Ray Parker – not that Ray's a family member or anything like that – he's just got a great ear for the kind of groove Jr's going for in his music! Ray produced and plays sweet guitar and keyboards on most tracks – giving the music that great Raydio bounce – which turns out to be a wonderful fit for the youthful Jr's vocals – almost styled in a Michael Jackson mode at points, but a bit deeper at other times too! Titles include "I Was Made For Dancing", "Too Young To Fall In Love", "If It's Love You're After", "Treat Me Right", "Mr Telephone Man", and "Bad Girls".

Jackson 5, move over – because the folks at Numero Records have uncovered a whole host of rare kid soul acts from the 70s – most of them a fair bit funkier than their Motown contemporaries! The tracks here all clearly follow the lead started by Michael and his brothers at the end of the 60s – but the music is way more than just a simple copycat of Jackson modes – as each of these artists have a really individual approach, and a heck of a lot of personality in their music – despite their youthful years. In true Numero fashion, most of the cuts here are from tiny little labels – issued only as singles back in the day, but produced with a great deal of enthusiasm for the music – and a confident, competent sound that's quite striking, given the age of the performers. A really great look at Impulse Records – one that gets past the obvious iconic elements of the label, and really shows the true spectrum of amazing music it handled during the 60s and 70s! Unlike other Impulse sets, which often stick close to the big-name recordings of the 60s, this one stretches way up to the mid 70s – to show the really inventive, creative sounds the label put forth in the post-Coltrane years – music inspired by the great one, and moving past him as well – even into some of the more funky territory you might have found over at Blue Note or Columbia! Long live tracks from pianist Michael Garrick – and some of his most boppish recordings – thanks partly to bold work on tenor from Don Weller! The format's a bit like some of the Ronnie Scotts material of 60s vintage – familiar tunes, but played in an open, relaxed way – so that both Garrick and Weller get plenty of room to solo, often with a quality that evokes the New York scene of the 50s. Rhythm players Chris Laurence on bass and Alan Jackson on drums help to add a bit of 70s lyricism to the proceedings – and Garrick definitely unleashes some of his modern edges at times – on titles that include "Like Someone In Love", "Third Floor Richard", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Michael's Song".

A great set from Rebbie Jackson – a batch of 80s groovers that's way different than work from siblings Michael or Janet – and done with a percolating sort of vibe that's quite different from some of the core projects of the rest of the Jacksons universe! Wayne Henderson handled most of the production for the set, and brings in a nice sense of class that pushes the work far from too-commercial soul – that strong balance that always makes his name on a record one key reason to check it out! There's still a bit of Jackson influence on the vocals – as Rebbie gets help from Michael, Tito, and Randy Jackson – alongside additional guest vocals from Gary Glenn, Patryce Banks, Maxie Anderson, and The Weather Girls. Titles include "Centipede", "Play Me", "Open Up To My Love", "Hey Boy", "Come Alive It's Saturday Night", "Ready for Love", and "A Fork In The Road". An amazing look at the music of Leon Ware – one of our favorite soul artists of the 70s! Leon's got a warmly mellow style that's totally great – heard most famously in collaboration with Marvin Gaye on the classic I Want You album, but equally noteworthy on Leon's own records – and on a host of other projects he's done with top-shelf soul artists over the years! A good number of those projects are collected here – the cream of the crop of Ware-associated cuts from the 70s and early 80s – tunes penned, produced, arranged, or even featuring Leon himself – all brought together here in a really wonderful little collection. Each track is a treasure, and the whole thing is a sublime mellow soul masterpiece – filled with musical moments that sound even better in the company of each other – pulled from other records, and rewoven here in a new tapestry that stands as a rich tribute to Ware's mighty talents. Killer work by this fab Chicago soul group – a bunch of young kids, ala The Jackson Five, with sweet soul sound that actually predates the work of Jermaine and Michael and Tito, and which paved the way for countless 70s groups to come! The Five Stairsteps were first discovered by Curtis Mayfield – who wrote and produced a number of tracks on the set – but they had a strength of their own (thanks in part to a young Keni Burke, who was in the group), and continued to grow over the years, changing their sound to fit their expanding ages, and the changing material they needed to cope with the growth in soul in the early 70s. The set's filled with classics – including the super-huge hit "Ooh Child", plus "The Girl I Love", "Behind Curtains", "Come Back", "World Of Fantasy", "You Waited Too Long", "We Must Be in Love", "Oooh, Baby Baby", "Don't Waste Your Time", "Something's Missing", and the break-heavy "Don't Change Your Love".

Maybe not dynamite, but an album that definitely has an explosive feel right from the start – thanks to some 80s grooves that really help re-ignite the solo career of Jermaine Jackson! Jermaine's soaring vocals are right at home in these beat-heavy arrangements – sparkling with a sense of soul and a great ear for a catchy chorus, yet somehow never sounding too commercial overall – really a great surprise, given what you might expect from the album! That trademark Jackson ear for a tune is right on the money – and the set features a few duet cuts – including "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" with Michael Jackson, "Take Good Care Of My Heart" with Whitney Houston, "When The Rain Begins To Fall" with Pia Zadora, and "Escape From The Planet Of The Ant Men" with Randy and Tito Jackson. Solo cuts include "Dynamite", "Sweetest Sweetest", "Oh Mother", "Come To Me", and "Some Things Are Private". CD features 5 bonus tracks that include "Sweetest Sweetest (US rmx)", "Come To Me (12" rmx)", "Do What You Do (12" rmx)", "Dynamite (12" rmx)", and "When The Rain Begins To Fall (12" voc with breakdown)".

A key European appearance for saxophonist Oliver Lake – captured here at the tail end of a strong rise on the US scene in the 70s! The music here is almost a fair bit freer than some of Lake's other sides from the time – long tracks played by a trio that includes Michael Gregory Jackson on guitar and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums – alongside Lake's own tenor, alto, and soprano sax. Jackson's guitar lines have a mind of their own – often running out in frenetic ways that diverge strongly from Lake's own solo inspirations – but in a way that further adds to the energy of the set. Titles include "5/1", "Zaki", "Clicker", and "Shine".

Another party record, not a straight hip hop record. "Where Brooklyn At?" is above average for this type of track, combining a bunch a samples naming Brooklyn from Ol Dirty Bastard, Biggie, Stetsasonic, MC Lyte, etc with a sample of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". Forget about the b-side, it sounds as weak as the title suggests.
