Not all cuts are great, but there's some nice funky tracks on here that make this one worth having, and which keep it from being a disappointment, like some of the other Reprise albums. A later one by the Meters, and a record that shows signs of their morphing into the Neville Brothers, but still a darn good batch of New Orleans funk, although with less of the spare hard scratchy sound as their early records. Allen Toussaint produced, and the group has a nice guitar heavy sound. Cuts include "Middle Of The Road", "Out In The Country", "Love Slip Upon Ya", "Running Fast", and their classic "Fire On The Bayou". Incredibly cool saturated orange psychedelic cover of the boys on the bayou with "The Meters" written in fire letters.

A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do".

Love the drums on this one – all skittish and snapping at the beginning – really setting the scene perfectly for the Afro Funk-styled horns that top off the tune and really set the tone! The track's like some lost Nigerian 45 from the 70s – and given excellent production to really suit the mood! "Ghost Walk" isn't nearly as spooky as it sounds – and has this amazing bassline that dips down in ways you wouldn't expect – kind of like The Meters, but as if they're messing themselves up a bit on purpose – all to set up a groove that's equally savage as the a-side, but completely different in sound!

Raw funk from Diazpora – a contemporary cut, but one with the same sort of gritty edge you'd expect from the Tramp label's usual rare funky 45s! "Non Sports" has an odd title, but an incredible groove – a right-on-the-money blend of fast drums, blasting horns, and riffing guitars – backed by the even greater "Kate", which has this romping groove, and a nice dose of organ – almost like a Meters' cut, but lots weirder with these strange horn passages!

A hip little look at Lee Dorsey's best music of the late 60s and 1970s – and a set that features some really great surprises! The core of the collection is some of Lee's funky work recorded with Allen Toussaint on production, and the Meters helping out in the backing – the kind of gritty New Orleans grooves that forever made Lee one of the leading lights of the Crescent City scene. Later tracks are a bit more polished, but pretty great too – numbers that show an evolution of the original Dorsey groove, often still in the hands of Toussaint. CD features 16 tracks in all – including the great "Radio Commercials", which features 2 numbers recorded for Coke – plus "My Babe", "What Am I Living For", "Sneakin Sally Through The Alley", "Night People", "Behind The 8 Ball", "Great Googa Mooga", "Ya Ya", "You Better Tell Her", "Lonleyology", "Yes We Can", and live versions of "Ride Your Pony", "Lottie Mo", and "Working In The Coal Mine".

Funky funky funky! The Duke Of Burlington were a lost Italian combo from the 70s – but on their best cuts, you'd swear they were an American group like The Meters or The Nite Liters! The band mix up hard heavy piano, funky drum breaks, choppy guitar, and some nice soulful flute solos – and the overall sound is just great! This album includes the incredible breakbeat classic "Flash", sampled many times over the years – but darn great on its own! Also includes some nice covers – like "Soul Clap 69", "Viva Tirado", "30 60 90", and "I Want You Back" – plus some really great original material, like "Criss Cross", "Slot Machine", and "LSD". Great stuff – and what a piano sound!

Surprisingly fantastic bit of funky sitar tracks! The project's a recent one, but it's got a classic 70s global crossover funk sound that's very much in the vein of the weird Indian-funk work of Ananda Shankar or The Dave Pike set. The record's got a raw Meters-esque groove at the base – which makes for a very tight funky sound – and Ravi plays these cool sitar licks over the top, in some very tasty riffs! Includes a bunch of great originals, like "Funky Sitar Man", "Path of the Blazing Sarong", and "Ravi's Thing" – plus great covers like "Look A Py Py", "Same Beat", and "Pass the Peas". Really good stuff, and way better than we expected it to sound!

Some real cage-rattling funk from the Jive Turkeys – combo who come together in a bracingly bold blend of organ, guitar, bass, and drums! There's a real Meters-like simplicity to the groove on "BA" – rompingly soulful, with a loping line we totally love – pitched a bit differently than classic New Orleans funk, but with a very similar spirit! "Chickenfoot" follows suit in a similar way, but with a slightly faster, modder-styled groove – still with plenty of organ and guitar in the lead!

There's a real Meters-like simplicity to the groove on "BA" – rompingly soulful, with a loping line we totally love – pitched a bit differently than classic New Orleans funk, but with a very similar spirit! "Chickenfoot" follows suit in a similar way, but with a slightly faster, modder-styled groove – still with plenty of organ and guitar in the lead!

A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years!

Cold, hard, and funky! This might be the greatest album ever by this legendary 70s funk band – and it's got a killer sound that has the tightness of the JBs, the rawness of the early Meters, and the frenzy of a rare funky 45! Includes the incredible "Afro Strut" – worth the price of the record alone, as it's got this screaming sax riff that's completely insane! Other nice ones include covers of "Shaft" and "Them Changes", plus "Brand X", "Baker's Instant", and "Respect To The Other Man".

A great album filled with hard breaks, tight choppy guitars, and a deep funky sound. This is one of the best early albums by the Nite Liters, and it's filled with great grooves like "Funky-Doo", "Stinkin Charlie", and "K-Jee" – but just about every track is a funky winner! These guys fit right in between The Meters & The JBs – and in our book, they're one of the best instrumental funk acts of the 70s! The album's like finding a pile of rare funky 45s, all pressed onto the same piece of wax!

Forget the preview, because Leon Spencer is already the main attraction on this key early album for Prestige! The date may well be one of the organist's greatest – and is a lean, mean session cut with that stretched out funky style that Prestige was really laying down at the time – open-ended tunes that take off from the Lou Donaldson late 60s style at Blue Note, with plenty of room for all players to do their thing! Idris Muhammad plays plenty of funky drums on the record, alongside trumpet from Virgil Jones, tenor from Grover Washington Jr, and guitar from Melvin Sparks – plus some kicking conga at the bottom from Buddy Caldwell. Spencer's sound on the Hammond is full and mighty – burning up from the get-go with a round, wall of sound sort of approach. The vibe is quite similar to Melvin Sparks' albums from the same time for Prestige – and titles include "The Slide", "Sneak Preview", "Message From the Meters", and "First Gravy".

A selection of Warner Brothers-related funk – but featuring some killer numbers that move way past the hits! This is one of the funkiest compilations we've ever heard from a major label – and it's proof that deep down in their catalogs, the majors were working just as hard as the indies to come up with some killer slabs of funk, as you'll hear in this set of 20 gems recorded between the years 1968 and 1974! Many of these numbers were only issued on 45s – or on long out of print LPs – and even though there's a few numbers on here that you may know, the set's also got a number of others that you probably don't, as it even surprised us with some of its funky goodies! A massively expanded version of the original Sehorn's Soul Farm compilation – one that adds in a huge amount of bonus tracks, and makes for an even more essential batch of New Orleans soul! The cuts here all come from the original Sansu empire formed by Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint – a key force in New Orleans soul of the 60s – thanks to Toussaint's amazing ear for new talent, and bold new styles of production in the studio! Toussaint went onto much greater fame on bigger labels in the 70s, but his work here is still his best – a hard-edged, uniquely rhythmic groove that forever changed the sound of soul in the Crescent City. The 2CD set brings together material that appeared on both original Sehorn's Soul Farm collections in the 80s – mostly culled from labels like Sansu and Deesu, plus bits from other sources – and it also adds in 18 more bonus cuts too, which makes for a whopping batch of 50 New Orleans soul classics. Was funk ever this great again? Maybe not – as Mickey & The Soul Generation were one of the greatest groups of their generation – a completely polished gem, in the sometimes rough-edged funky 45 rockpile! The band never cut a full album, but their 7" singles from the early 70s are the stuff of legend – some of the first funky 45s that started passing amongst collectors, prized for their incredibly tight sound – right up there with the JBs, Meters, and other established funky acts for pure "in the pocket" action. Most of that rare early work's never been reissued – save for the occasional dodgy boot – which is why it's even more wonderful to have this double-length set of work by the group, complete with a fuller track listing than we'd ever imagined they recorded, and full notes on the music and band by Josh Davis, aka DJ Shadow! The 2LP set features 19 tracks – including released and unreleased recordings – with numbers that include "Iron Leg", "Football", "Up The Stairs & Around The Bend", "Give Everybody Some", "Joint Session", "Chocolate", "Message From A Black Man", "Soulful Sickness", "UFO", "Hey Brother Man", "Southern Fried Funk", "How Good Is Good", and "We Got To Make A Change".

Tight funky work from Dr John – a second collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint, and a set that follows strongly on their Right Place record of the year before! The groove's not as messed-up as on the first few Atlantic records by the Doctor – but in it's place is a sweet electric funk mode, kind of an update on 60s New Orleans grooves – handled here by The Meters and a host of other key players from the Crescent City scene! Toussaint's production and arrangements are tight, but never slick at all – still much earthier than the later work, especially that on Warner Brothers, that was handled by the producer. And the tunes have a good focus that keeps Dr John on track lyrically – even though we'll admit that our main love of this record comes from the keyboards, bass, and funky drums! Titles include "Stealin", "What Comes Around (Goes Around)", "Mos' Scocious", "Rite Away", "R U 4 Real", "Let's Make A Better World", "Sing Along Song", "Go Tell The People", "Quitters Never Win", and "Can't Git Enuff".

Nice reissue of this one! Dr. John gets backed by The Meters, and the result is a record that yielded his biggest hit – the title cut "Right Place Wrong Time", which has a nice funky break that still sounds great 25 years after hearing it on AM radio. Lots of other nice ones with a good funky feel, too, including "Life", "Traveling Mood", "Same Old Same Old", "Just The Same", and "Shoo Fly Marches On". Allen Toussaint produced, and what more could you ask for?

Heavy funk from the Indy scene of the late 60s – the lost album by one of the funkiest combos in the Midwest! Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul – no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove – using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times – but a lot freer flowing. The album features 2 tracks that formed the basis of one of the group's singles – plus a lot more that were never issued at the time, including a few by other incarnations of the combo! Titles include "Soul Heart Transplant", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Light My Fire", "Vanilla Fudge", "Get Yourself Together", "Drugs Ain't Cool", "Fool Am I", and "It's Too Late For Love". CD contains the bonus alternate version of "Light My Fire".

That's no typo in the title – because the tune's so down and dirty, it's definitely got the "authoritay" it deserves! Alan Evans really knocks it out of the park with this one – heavy drums that set up a perfect Meters-type groove – and this bubbling, burning organ that recalls their great Josie days – as does the jagged rhythm of the tune! "Drop Hop" is a bit more straightforward and groovy – guitar and organ romping along like some mod 60s instrumental!

Damn funk work from Jive Turkeys – a cooking cut that begins with a super-slick guitar riff, then soars into fast drums, romping Hammond, and totally groovy grooves! "Funky Brewster" begins with some great organ lines – almost as riffing as the guitar – then hits this Meters-like groove that's totally great – almost as rough and raw as one of their classic singles on Josie!

Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. Two excellent albums from Funk Inc on one CD! Superfunk is one of the band's greatest albums – and a really tight batch of funky tunes given some stellar production by David Axelrod! The band's a bit tighter than on earlier releases – leaving behind the hard jazz-jam sound for a more together soul-oriented one, heard to best effect on the album's enduring classic, "Goodbye, So Long" – a rolling funky tune that features vocals on the chorus, and an unbelievably catchy instrumental sound that you might recognize instantly from its use as a sample over the years. The rest of the record's just as great – and the band runs through The Meters' classic "Message From The Meters", Barry White's funky "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Babe", and a great rendition of the electric jazz classic "The Hill Where The Lord Hides". Hangin Out features their organ-heavy sound vamping away on some really tight groovers – not as break-heavy as some of the tracks on their first album, but with some excellent modal riffing in a sweet jazz dance mode. The big cuts include "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and "Dirty Red", both groove classics that have a strong Prestige jazz funk sound. Other cuts include a sweet cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love", plus the tracks "We Can Be Friends" and "I'll Be Around".

One of the weird Meters-related New Orleans parade bands from the 70s – similar to the group The Wild Magnolias, but with a sound that's more in a New Orleans mode than a 70s funk one. The Meters play on the record, and the group sings most of the vocals as well – and production is by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, with that 70s New Orleans choppy style that was making them both buckets of money at the time! Tracks include "Brother John", "Indian Red", "Hey Hey", "Hey Mama", "Meet De Boys On The Battlefront", and a version of "Hey Pocky Way".

A really wonderful document of of the Takamba style of music in Northern Mali and Niger – passionate, energetic and hypnotically performed by Ali Ag Amoumine! Ali's home is in Timbouctou, a couple hundred kilometers upriver from the Takamba region, and it was here that this excellent recording by Christopher Kirkley took place. It's essentially traditional regional guitar music, electrified and played in droning, wholly entrancing patterns, while the rhythm is played on the calabash. The songs here are described as being informed by Ali's travels and including his own compositions, and it does have inimately personal feel, while also pulling us in strictly on the basis of the soaring, hypnotic sounds. Includes "Adernibah", "Khomeissa", "Fatimatou", "Damara", "Kalitay", "Hali Diallo", "Taliat Nouhirase", "Nouvelle Annee" and "Mali".
