Their move to Mercury Records from the smaller indie Westbound was a real winning move – as it gave them a smoother soul feel that only expanded their groove, not restricted it! A beautiful follow up to Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield – even if the slow building success of that classic first album ended up literally bypassing the newer Hergest Ridge on the charts at the time! Hergest Ridge, like its famous predecessor, it's the album is of a piece, in 2 parts, and deeply layered blend of disparate instrumentation that works just beautifully. But Hergest Ridge is a different feel, with more a pastoral, meditative experience – building slowing and achieving a kind of intensity more and more as it goes along, particularly in the second part. Innovative use of the studio abound, purportedly employing over a thousand electric guitar overdubs, but it all feels natural. This 2010 CD version includes new stereo mixes by Oldfield, plsu 2 short bonus tracks: the single b-side "In Dulci Jubio (For Maureen) plus "Spanish Tune" (previously unreleased 1974 promotional version) and a nice booklet of notes. The third album from symphonic rock pioneer Mike Oldfield – at this point unable to steer his way out of the engulfing shadow of his massive Tubular Bells album of a couple years earlier – yet still bearing fruit creatively, as Ommadawn is his third excellent and pretty much unprecedented album of layered instrumental mood rock grandeur in a row! It's not only his third album, it's his third 2 part, single piece epic in a row that's woven from acoustic, electric, classic and modern instrumentation – with a choir and and folk instrumentation keeping in something of an earthy realm, even with synthezisers and more otherworldly touches. Influences from Irish folk to African percussion, it's uncompromising, intricate and interesting to this day! Absolutely brilliant numbers from Charlie Rich – one of the greatest and most versative voices ever to come out of the 50s rock & roll and country scenes – his impeccable work for Smash in the 60s, long before he'd hit mainstream country pay dirt (finally) in the mid 70s! Charlie was both blessed and cursed by his gifted vocal chords, in that he could do anything with them – nascent blue-eyed soul, pop, country, rock & roll – which made it all too easy for his labels, producers and handlers to move him onto a new thing if the singles or LPs didn't stick commercially. They couldn't wedge him comfortably into a niche, but damned if he didn't knock everything they threw at him right outta the park. Sir Lord Baltimore may have a British-sounding name – but the group are a trio from Brooklyn, and serve up a blistering pre-metal version of hard rock that maybe blows away some of their English contemporaries at the time! There's a tremendous amount of power going on here – heavy bass from Gary Justin, searing guitars from Louis Dampier, and monstrous drums from John Garner, who somehow manages to also give out these raw, eerie vocals while also completely destroying the drum kit – all with energy that really prefaces a metal generation to come – but with a stripped-down vibe that's completely free of hoke. On the second album the group expands to a quartet, which makes for an even heavier sound than their first album – and the whole thing is one of those lost gems from a group who got a great shot in the studio from a big label – who then let the record languish, as they never knew how to promote it! A landmark album from The Allman Brothers – and a set that forever set the standard for double live albums in the 70s! The expanded format really let the group open up and show the strengths they had already developed as a live act, long before they walked into the studio for their initial album – as the tracks are often quite long, and let you hear the way they approached the process of creation – using lots of jamming energy that's really let loose here on the longer tunes, which are awash in amazing guitar and organ solos! Dickey Betts and Duane Allman are fantastic together – and titles include the side-long "Whipping Post" and "You Don't Love Me" – plus "Hotlanta", "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Statesboro Blues", "Stormy Monday", and "Done Somebody Wrong". Very early work from Cannonball Adderley – recorded way before the funky years, when he was a hard-wailing soulful soloist with a lot of bop in his style! Cannon's paired here with brother Nat, a good companion even at this early stage – and the two of them solo in front of a large group that features Jerome Richardson, Max Roach, Cecil Payne, and Jimmy Cleveland, all blowing away in hard heavy form, similar to that used on other Mercury/Emarcy jazz sessions from the time. Quincy Jones handled the arrangements, and Cannonball holds his own nicely – and serves up a whole new tone that's a lot more measured than in later years. Tracks include "Fallen Feathers", "Song Is You", "Willows", and "Everglade". CD

An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes Arne Domnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". CD

Nice compilation of tracks that features some fine (and famous) moments from one of our favorite Chicago soul singers, recorded for the Vee Jay and Mercury labels. Most of these songs are pretty hard to get a hold of on vinyl any more, and though the package is a bit low budget, this is still a great set of some of the Ice Man's best numbers. A whopping collection of the Dells' classic work – featuring tunes pulled from their years at Vee Jay, Chess, Chi-Sound, and Mercury! The package starts way back in the 50s, and traces the group through their groundbreaking 60s soul sides, their sublime baroque 70s numbers, and their later smooth modern tracks – and as you listen to this stuff, you'll be stunned to hear how great the group remained through all of that time! The early tracks are straight doo wop, with simple production; later work has the great Charles Stepney crafting some majestic Cadet/Concept arrangements; and even the modern stuff has a well-constructed smooth groove. Through it all, though, the real strength is the group's vocals – still wonderful even in the album's one more recent number, "A Heart Is A House For Love". The classic first LP by this stellar Chicago harmony group – and a monster! Heaven & Earth had a wonderful falsetto harmony sound that reminds us a lot of east coast winners like Blue Magic or The Stylistics – and like some of the best east coast groups, this group's vocals work equally well on slow ballads or faster uptempo numbers, both of which are handled extremely well on the record by producer Clarence Johnson. The bulk of the arrangements on the record were done by Tom Tom 84 – one of Chicago's true soul geniuses, and in perfect form on this record. The whole thing's amazingly well put together for an indie soul group album – and is a sure indication of the group's later fame on Mercury. Titles include "Nature's Miracle", "The Message", "I'll Always Love You", "Let Me Back In", and "I Can't Seem To Forget You". CD features the bonus track "Promises". CD

Shirley Horn's definitely swinging here – in a set of tracks that features groovy numbers from two different points in her career! Some of the work on the set is from her early 60s years on Mercury and ABC Records – and the other half's from that great stretch in the 90s when her career had really been revived, thanks to a host of excellent recordings for Verve! The mix of material is really great, and shows a wider range of Horn's talents than you'll normally find on other collections – mixing 60s swingers in with some more mature numbers from the later years. Titles include "Big City", "The Great City", "Mack The Knife", "That's No Joke", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "Peel Me A Grape", "How Am I To Know", "Come Dance With Me", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". An expanded version of an album that was originally issued as Hank Jones' Piano as a 10" LP on Mercury – one that adds some trio tracks to the original solo piano performances! Jones is working solo on most numbers – really getting a chance to stretch out and try new ideas – in ways that have him balancing between sweeter sounds and some sharper modern moments that seem to come in and stir things up, but often in very subtle ways. Additional tunes feature Johnny Smith on guitar and Ray Brown in bass – still pretty laidback overall. Early genius from Sam Jones – the kind of record that showed the world that he was way more than just a bass player – even though he was pretty darn great at that! At the time of the set, Sam was already raising plenty of ears with his work in the Cannonball Adderley group, an outfit that helped Jones find a whole new role for the bass in jazz. But here, he's working with a much larger group – a tentet that's filled with all star players that include Melba Liston, Cannonball Adderley, Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Heath, Victor Feldman, Tate Houston, and Les Spann – soaring through lively arrangements by Heath and Feldman that sit in a space between small combo soul jazz and larger group swing – a bit in the mode of some of Quincy Jones' best early 60s work on Mercury! Despite the large group, Sam's bass gets plenty of room to roam in the album – and titles include "The Chant", "Blues On Down", "In Walked Ray", "Blue Bird", "Four", and "Off Color". CD

Despite the fact that the title's "Introducing Roland Kirk", it's not actually Kirk's first album – but it is a heck of a smoker with a very unusual sound! The session features Roland with a Chicago group that includes Ira Sullivan on trumpet, Don Garrett on bass, and Ron Burton on both piano and organ – the latter of which gives Kirk's playing a very different feel than usual – a bit more soul jazz and gutbuckety than on the later Mercury recordings. In fact, given Roland's use of many different reed instruments (tenor, manzello, stritch, and whistle – all often played at the same time!) – there's almost a Yusef Lateef quality to the album, at last in the style of some of Lateef's more hardbop sides for Prestige at the time. Kirk's tone, as always, is amazing – with that really spacious feel he gets from playing more than one horn at once! Titles include some great originals, like "The Call", "Soul Station", and "Spirit Girl" – plus "Our Waltz" and "Jack The Ripper". CD

Fantastic stuff! This essential CD brings together two of Roland Kirk's best albums from the mid 60's (and two of his hardest to find on vinyl!) Rip, Rig, & Panic is mindblowing work from Roland Kirk – a record that really pushes the boundaries of his music even farther than some of his earlier, and excellent, albums for the Mercury label! Kirk's really stretching out here – finding a space in jazz that's uniquely his own – modern, yet playful – creative, yet never overindulgent – and perfectly balanced to find a whole new sound of soul for the 60s! Things never get too far outside, but Kirk's reedlines are always breaking out into fresh territory – incredible tenor parts, and also some amazing work on manzello and stritch too, both lesser-known reed instruments that Roland employs to incredible ends. Other group members fit his vibe perfectly – Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – each stepping quickly to catch the energy of each new twist and turn in Kirk's music. Titles include the sublime "From Bechet Byas & Fats" – plus "No Tonic Pres", "Rip Rig & Panic", "Mystical Dream", "Black Diamond", and "Slippery Hippery Flippery". Beautiful Edith is a bit mellower, but no less wonderful, and the record features some great early piano work by Lonnie Liston Smith. A rare Japanese session from vocalist Helen Merrill – one of a few key 60s recordings she cut on the Tokyo scene, after initial fame in the US! The album features a great small group arranged by drummer Takeshi Inomata, played by a combo that includes alto, baritone, and trumpet – all used in a cool and laidback mode that resonates nicely with Merrill's more familiar 50s sides on Mercury – but which also stretches out more, too – not as "cool", and with a sense of inflection that's mighty nice. Helen's in great form vocally – often singing in that almost-effortless mode that we love in her classic work – and titles include "It Never Entered My Mind", "Bewitched", "You Do Something To Me", "Teach Me Tonight", "Good Morning Heartache", and "My Favorite Things". CD

It's hard to overstate the influence of Max Roach and Clifford Brown on the west coast scene of the 50s – as the two players helped draw out the bop sound of LA that was quickly getting lost in the cool jazz shuffle of the time, and gave it a strength and focus that not only made the group one of the strongest of the time, but which also sparked new life and a hardbop generation on the LA scene! This classic set of live recordings was one of the first great Brown/Roach moments – recorded during 2 different concerts by Gene Norman Presents, and featuring some great tenor work by LA giants Teddy Edwards and Harold Land, plus some piano by the amazing "sideways" player Carl Perkins, as well as Bud Powell's brother Richie – a key factor of the group's studio recordings on Mercury, and a player who would perish in the same accident that took the life of Clifford Brown. This CD features the full versions of most of the tracks that have been highly edited on the GNP albums over the years – including "Clifford's Axe", "Sunset Eyes", "Jordu", "I Can't Get Started", "Parisian Thoroughfare", and "Tenderly". A few edits persist in a few parts, as the unedited tapes appear to be lost – but many of the tracks are in nice longish versions! CD

Go out of the world with The Three Sounds on this sweet little set for Blue Note – as the trio are at their early best, and working with a care of craft that you won't find on other 60s albums for labels like Verve or Mercury! The mighty Gene Harris is in the lead on piano, moving between a great blend of lyrical and more soul-based styles – given great accompaniment from Bill Dowdy on drums and Andy Simpkins on bass – the latter of whom is an overlooked genius, with this round tone and solid touch that really holds the group together! Titles are a nice mix of exotic standards and gutbuckety originals – and tunes include "My Silent Love", "Just In Time", "Out Of this World", "Out Of the Past", "Sanctified Sue", and "Girl Of My Dreams". Drummer Kenny Clarke's at the front of the group – but all players are great, and the set features work by Cannonball Adderley on alto, Jerome Richardson on tenor, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nat Adderley on cornet, Hank Jones or Horace Silver on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass. The Adderley brothers sound especially great – and the young Cannonball has a quality here that's more soulful and sharp-edged than his work on Mercury – much more in a Prestige blowing session style! An overlooked 60s pop gem from Margo Guryan – probably best known as the writer of the "Sunday Morning" hit for Spanky & Our Gang, but an equally great singer on her own! Margo's got a style that's towards the hipper side of girl pop in the late 60s – but one that's also free from singer/songwriter modes too – an approach that's never too serious, yet which often has a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix. Production is somewhat poppy, but not in a commercial way – and we might well say that Guryan's work here has that same great balance of elements we love in the Mercury recordings by Spanky & Our Gang. John Hill produced, and also handled most of the arrangements – and many tunes here are Guryan originals, with titles that include "Sunday Morning", "Sun", "Love Songs", "Thoughts", "Take A Picture", "Think Of Rain", "Can You Tell", and "Someone I Know". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Timothy Gone", "It's Alright Now", and "I Think A Lot About You". CD

A stone classic from Roland Kirk – and a record that beautifully balances his modern ideas and playful energy – as you might guess from the title! While posing as the "whistleman", Roland's also pushing the boundaries of jazz a few steps forward too – not just in modern terms, but in spiritual ones too – showing that there's a way of letting loose that doesn't always have to be cold or artsy, but personal and soulful too. There's still echoes of the hardbop of the Mercury years, and plenty of inventive reed work from Kirk – on tenor, alto sax, manzello, stritch, and even nose flute too. The album was recorded live with a very hip cast that includes Lonnie Smith and Jaki Byard on piano, Charles Crosby on drums, and Major Holley on bass – and tracks include "Roots", "Here Comes The Whistleman", "Step Right Up", and "Aluminum Baby". The start of a legendary run of records from Queen – a set that's maybe not as archetypically the group's work as mid 70s albums to come – but which is still a hell of a way to put themselves out for the rest of the world to hear! The intensity of their musical performance is already very much in place – heard here on the leadoff stormer "Keep Yourself Alive", which is a great way to begin the record – followed by other tracks penned by Brian May and Freddie Mercury that have a surprisingly diverse array of themes. Previously unreleased work from the legendary group of Clifford Brown and Max Roach – recorded back in the 50s, when Mainstream producer Bob Shad was working on the Brown/Roach dates for Mercury – but not issued until this set in the 70s, when Shad had his own label! The music here is right up there with the best 50s classics by the pair – really showcasing that amazing trumpet style that made Brownie a genius right from the start – next to some of the burning energy he forged with Roach in the group. Every player's tremendous – Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell on piano, and George Morrow on bass – and titles include two Clifford Brown originals – "Daahoud" and "Joyspring" – plus Roach's "Mildama", plus the standards "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "These Foolish Things Remind Me Of You".
