It's good, solid stuff – reinterpreting the material in a way that's very mindful of its influence on classic hip hop – with some tighter beats and other nods to classic 90s hip hop production – but it's done with an emphasis on live instrumentation that's pretty great! Medline plays most of the instruments himself, with lots of Afro percussion and jazzy flute – with guest vocals on a number of tunes by Roni Alkekengi. It's got a stripped to the essentials vibe that reminds us of some of favorite sounds of classic hip hop soul. Really strong stuff! The beats carry a raw soul and hip hop funk vibe and it's given some added depth thanks to strong, hazy vocals by Miles – along with his solid work on flugelhorn. Suff Daddy's debut EP from '08 gets an essential update for '12! The original Efil4ffus has officially been out of print since '10, but it's been tough to 'round our parts for longer than that. Hence, we're thrilled to see and hear this update. The sound is timelessly fresh – thumping funky beats, soulful keys and top shelf guest appearances from Miles Bonny, Kissey Asplund and Oddisee. This version features the previously 45-only "Kill Bill" and "Drama (Pt 2)". Turkish elements collide with Greek, Syrian, and other regional styles – and instrumentation is heavy on oud and violin, both played with very melancholy tones that possibly indicate a longing for the homeland. Spare percussion figures in often too – and the tracks are a mix of vocal and instrumental numbers – working together surprisingly well, despite the range of artists and nationalities. Compiled by Ian Nagoski, who also wrote the excellent notes and worked on the sound restoration!

What can we say? Booker T and crew are always tops in our book – and this album's as strong a batch of their classic singles as you'll ever find! Book's organ is the sound of a generation, and Steve Cropper's sinister vamping on guitar gives even the poppier tracks a hard edge that still sends shivers down our spine!
