Various — Diablos Del Ritmo – The Colombian Melting Pot 1960 to 1985 ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $26.99
One of the deepest digs we've ever seen into the rich array of grooves from Colombia – a double-length page that covers a much wider range of sounds than you might expect! Colombia's unusual amongst Latin American nations, in that it's got kind of a "crossroads" sort of role – a place where other South American sounds come into contact with music from North America, the Caribbean, and even Africa as well – resulting in some mighty heavy styles that are perfectly summed up on these 2CDs! The package is way more than just an armchair look at Colombia – and is heavy on the sorts of funk and offbeat grooves we've come to expect from the Analog Africa label – a key imprint in bringing the sounds of the globe to Anglo groove diggers like us. Rhythm is definitely at the core – as promised in the title – but the package also has plenty of great notes to help us understand the rich cultural history as well. Titles include "Calambre" by Conjunto Barbacoa, "Lumbalu" by Calixto Ochoa & Los Papaupas, "Schallcarri" by Grupo Abharca, "El Caterete" by Wganda Kenya, "Enyere Kumbara" by Julian Y Su Combo, "Wasamaye" by Wasamaye Rock Group, "Bajo El Troupillo Guajiro" by Sexteto Manaure, "Pegale A La Nalga" by Fuentes All Stars, "Juipiti" by Grupo Folclorico, "Shakalode" by Wganda Kenya, "Santana En Salsa" by Crecencio Camacho, "La Motilona" by Los Alegres Diablos, "Pajaro Madrugador" by Alfredo Gutierrez, "La Bulla" by Los Curramberos De Guayabal, "Busca La Careta" by Andres Landero, "La Cascada" by Pianonegro, "Eco En Stereo" by Sonora Dinamita, "La Veterana" by Peyo Torres, "Lluvia" by Sonora Tropical, and "Agoniza El Magadlena" by Ramiro Beltran. 32 tracks in all – and it comes in a great hardbound package with a 60-page booklet.

Medline — People Make The World Go Round ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2013. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98
A contemporary riff on benchmark 70s soul jazz and funky fusion from French producer Medline – who reimagines classics by Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and others! It's good, solid stuff – reinterpreting the material in a way that's very mindful of its influence on classic hip hop – with some tighter beats and other nods to classic 90s hip hop production – but it's done with an emphasis on live instrumentation that's pretty great! Medline plays most of the instruments himself, with lots of Afro percussion and jazzy flute – with guest vocals on a number of tunes by Roni Alkekengi. Includes "A New Day", "People Make The World Go Round", "Wind Parade","Expansion" and "Everybody Love The Sunshine" with Roni Alkekengi, "Eboness", "Red Clay" and more.

Suff Daddy — Suff Sells ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
Heavy grooves from Suff Daddy – but augmented with lots of great guest work too – the kind of collaborative effort that always seems to stem from his great inspiration in the studio! Core grooves are nicely diverse – and filled with funky stuff that draws heavily from 60s and 70s roots – especially on the keyboards, which seem even more magical this time around – and range from piano to Hammond to moog, and more! Guests include Miles Bonny, Flat Pocket, Hulk Hodn, Phat Kat, Vertual Vertigo, and Fleur Earth – and titles include "Jimmy Smith Interlude", "KC Vodka", "Dexter Wansel Interlude", "Det2bin", "Gimlet, "Elephant", "Bo Break", "Cold Lampin", and "Pattern Select".

new S3 (Miles Bonny & Brenk Sinatra) — Supa Soul Sh*t ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
A gritty, genuinely soulful debut from the team of Miles Bonny and beatmaker Brenk Sinatra – and one of the best underground soul-skewing full lengths yet from Mr. Bonny and Melting Pot! With the exception of some guitar, S3 is a 2-man operation – Brenk on the beats and Bonny on vocals and fluegelhorn. It's got a stripped to the essentials vibe that reminds us of some of favorite sounds of classic hip hop soul. Really strong stuff! The beats carry a raw soul and hip hop funk vibe and it's given some added depth thanks to strong, hazy vocals by Miles – along with his solid work on flugelhorn. Titles include "Seein' Doe", "Chakal", "Don't Stop", "Sprinkle", "Dr. Strange", "All I Know", "10 Minutes", "Let It Rain", "Rain Don't Stop Me Now", "Lystics", "Really", "Get This Money", "Stars Shine" and "Moving On" and in a nod to classic hip hop albums, a series of "skits" – but don't think those are filler – these little interludes are purely musical and indispensable!

Melting Pot (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Suff Daddy's debut EP from '08 gets an essential update for '12! The original Efil4ffus has officially been out of print since '10, but it's been tough to 'round our parts for longer than that. This version features the previously 45-only "Kill Bill" and "Drama (Pt 2)". Booker T & The MGs — Soul Dressing ... CD
Stax (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $15.99
A great little record from Booker T and group – often overlooked amidst the range between Green Onions and Melting Pot, but a very strong album of soulful Memphis instrumentals all the way through! Book's organ is bubbling hot, and the band's tight rhythm style works in a perfect laid-back mode to push the group way past the stock grooves of earlier albums – thanks to great work from the rest of the combo too. There's some mighty nice rhythm changes on this one, and a good range of non-pop tunes like "Night Owl Walk", "Chinese Checkers", "Soul Dressing", "Tic Tac Toe", "Outrage", "Home Grown", "Big Train", "Jelly Bread", and "Plum Nellie".

Various — To What Strange Place Vol 1 – Naughty Girl – The Music Of The Ottoman-American Diaspora 1916 to 1930 ... LP
Tompkins Square/Mississippi, Mid 10s-1920s. New Copy .... $11.99
An amazing little set – one that shines a brilliant light on music made in America by immigrants from the dissolved Ottoman Empire – all cuts recorded in New York in the teens and twenties, but with a feel that's definitely got an other-worldly feel! The sounds are very exotic right from the start – unusual percussion, string inflections, and offbeat vocals – a melange of Middle Eastern modes brought together by the expansive power of the Ottoman cultural melting pot – then re-sifted by the cultural shakeup of New York! Turkish elements collide with Greek, Syrian, and other regional styles – and instrumentation is heavy on oud and violin, both played with very melancholy tones that possibly indicate a longing for the homeland. Spare percussion figures in often too – and the tracks are a mix of vocal and instrumental numbers – working together surprisingly well, despite the range of artists and nationalities. Compiled by Ian Nagoski, who also wrote the excellent notes and worked on the sound restoration!

new Booker T & The MGs — Very Best Of Booker T & The MGs ... CD
Rhino/Stax, 1960s. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
What can we say? Booker T and crew are always tops in our book – and this album's as strong a batch of their classic singles as you'll ever find! Book's organ is the sound of a generation, and Steve Cropper's sinister vamping on guitar gives even the poppier tracks a hard edge that still sends shivers down our spine! The set's got 16 tracks than run the gamut of the group's years at Stax – including "Green Onions", "Soul Dressing", "Boot-Leg", "Hip Hug Her", "Mo Onions", "Soul Limbo", "My Sweet Potato", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Time Is Tight", "Slum Baby", and the amazing jazzer "Melting Pot".
