But almost even better is the New York theme of the record – surprising, given the anti-NYC vibe of Torme's classic "California Suite" – but perfect, too, as it really ties the whole thing together wonderfully – creating this beautiful picture of the Big Apple in the postwar years. Titles include the greatest version of "Sunday In New York" you'll ever hear – plus "Let Me Off Uptown", "Autumn In New York", "New York New York", "Manhattan", and "My Time Of Day".

One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess – done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess – but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes. Plus, the other artists on the set really keep things interesting – as the collection features vocal performances by Johnny Hartman, Frank Rosolino, Betty Roche, Bob Dorough, and Sallie Blair. Plus, the whole thing's presented as Gershwin wrote it – complete with narration by Al Jazzbo Collins, and a number of strong instrumental passages. Music is performed by groups led by Russ Garcia, Duke Ellington, Pat Moran, and Stan Levy – and players are an array of the best of both the New York and LA scenes at the time! This unusual 10" LP appears to be a promo – with 6 tracks from the full score.

A killer live album from Uncle Mel! The energy in the recording is great – and the set features Mel swinging hard with a tight jazz group, on nice little numbers like "Love For Sale", "Love Is Just Around the Corner", "Shakin The Blues Away", and "In Other Words". His voice is perfect, and it's great to hear how he keeps his wonderful tone, even in a live setting!

One of the harder to find Sammy records, and one of the best! Sammy takes Mel Torme's drippy "California Suite", an extended work about how great California is – and he turns it into an extended chat between Sammy and a friend in a bar in New York City, with twists and turns that are way jazzier, and way hipper than Mel's version, which features a whiny woman playing the part of the New Yorker. Side two of the record features some great sensitive versions of Mel Torme tunes – like "Welcome To The Club", "A Stranger Called The Blues", and "Willow Road". Arrangements by Marty Paich, too – one of Mel's best arrangers!

A great little live set from Mel Torme – and one that features the same jazzy style as his studio albums for the Bethlehem label from the 50s! The combo behind Mel is a smallish one – Marty Paich on piano and arrangements, Larry Bunker on vibes, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – and the arrangements here all have that great mix of sensitivity and swing that Paich was first showing at the time – an approach that really helped Torme hit new levels in his music! Tracks include "Love Is Just A Bug", "Just One Of Those Things", "The Tender Trap", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", and "One For My Baby".

Upbeat, jazzy, and swinging – two great albums from Mel Torme's years at Verve! I Dig The Duke I Dig The Count is an album dedicated to the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, set to some very upbeat, jazzy backings from Johnny Mandel! The album's quite swinging at points – and given the choice of material, Mel really breaks from the familiar – stretching out nicely to reach the spirit of the famous leaders, but always with that tremendous sense of tone! Titles include "Down For Double", "I'm Gonna Go Fishin", "I Like The Sunrise", "Reminiscing In Tempo", "Oh What A Night For Love", and "In The Evening". On Swings Shubert Alley, Mel Torme takes on the sound of Broadway at the start of the 60s – but he does so in a very groovy way, thanks to hip backings from the amazing Marty Paich! The style here is as swinging and jazzy as the work that Mel and Marty cut together on the Bethlehem label in the late 50s – and the tracks have a nice sort of groove, and an overall lean feel – a sound that takes the music far from its Broadway roots! Players include Art Pepper on alto, Stu Williamson on trumpet, Bill Perkins on tenor, and Frank Rosolino on trombone – all bringing a nice sense of themselves to the set. Titles include "Lonely Town", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Old Devil Moon", "Hello Young Lovers", "Too Close For Comfort", and "Just In Time".

Groovy jazz from 2 very cool labels – the related Skye and Gryphon companies of the late 60s and mid 70s, respectively – home to some very very cool bits! Skye's best known as the home of Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland in their post-Verve years – and the label's got a feel that's very much in the spirit of both artists – often blending together jazz, Latin, and easy grooves with a dreamy floating sort of quality. Gryphon recordings came a few years later – and had a warm and mellow 70s jazz sort of feel – using richer production to deeply color work by a variety of well-known artists who got a chance to stretch out in their albums for the label. Despite the difference of a few years between them, the work from both labels sits very nicely together here – thanks to an expert job of compilation by Toru Hashimoto, the force behind the Café Apres Midi and Free Soul series! Titles include "Mixing" by Airto, "What's Going On" and "My Favorite Things" by Louis Hayes, "Tandoori" by Barry Miles, "Flea Market" and "Suburbia" by Gary McFarland, "Theme From Peter Gunn" by Chuck Rainey, "Don't Fence Me In" by Grady Tate, "Viva Peraza" by Armando Peraza, "La Pasionaria" by Michel Legrand, "You'll Never Get To Heaven" and "Armando's Bossa" by Cal Tjader, "Bluesette" by Mel Torme & Buddy Rich, and "Change Partners" by Phil Woods.

A pretty cool little collection – a Japanese-only set that's filled with various versions of Burt Bacharach classics pulled from the vaults of Universal Music – including a rich array of 60s recordings we might have missed otherwise! The set appears to have been done in support of a 2008 Bacharach tribute tour, but all of the recordings are of older vintage – and the set includes a huge amount of rare numbers from the first years when Burt's music was getting out to the masses. Although the Bethlehem label had some great success with some of its vocal stars – like Chris Connor or Mel Torme – they also had a strong commitment to jazz vocals that stretched way past the big names, to include many excellent under-recognized singers, like Helen Carr. This rare album from the mid 50s is a perfect example of the label's commitment at work – as it features Carr in a beautifully no-nonsense setting, with spare instrumental backing provided by Red Mitchell, Howard Roberts, and Cappy Lewis. The tracks are very well-selected – and move past the usual nuggets found on lackluster vocal jazz sessions, to include nice little tunes like "Symphony", "Lonely Street", "My Kind Of Trouble Is You", "Do I Worry", and "Then You've Never Been Blue". A nice lost vocal jazz treasure!

Not straight soundtrack work, but a wealth of groovy jazz and vocal cover versions – almost all of them from hip 60s movies, presented here in a really wonderful package! The tunes often have the sort of exotic tinges you might guess from the title and cover – an approach that's somewhat loungey, but never in a sleepy or gimmicky way – thanks to an excellent choice of artists for the set! Instrumentation includes vibes, flute, Hammond, and plenty of percussion – and the balance here has a lot more on the instrumental side than the vocal one – although the tracks with singers are still pretty great too. Timeless garagey R&B from The Ballantynes –the third great 45 in a row from the Vancouver's group! "Faith" seems to have a bit of an uptempo Motown influence driving it, especially when it comes to the catchy chorus – but underneath that is rawer, but still soulful swagger that's exciting as can be. It's more of a stormer than you might guess from the picture sleeve – and a damn good one! "Velvet" is another winner – with traded male and female vocals on this one. It's their best couple of songs yet!

Soaring soul from The Futures – a Philly group who'd already worked for years in the underground before cracking the racks with this debut LP in 1975 – schooled strongly in their best vocal modes from previous singles, and ready to unleash the best side of their sound on the world! The set's got a perfectly put-together style that's much more like some of the Philly vocal work on Atlantic of Philadelphia International at the time – although also not as commercial, thanks to a righteous undercurrent in the group's presentation and overall aesthetic – hinted at by their image on the cover! Arrangements are by David Van DePitte and Wade Marcus, who also echo a bit of Detroit styles too – particularly the righteous blend of The Temptations towards the end of their Motown years. The Futures are equally great on mellow cuts and stormers – and titles include Castles", "Do Unto Others", "Ninety Days (In The House Of Love Correction)", "I Had A Dream", "Love Will Be Around Forever", and "Super Love". Plus, the CD features 7 bonus tracks – duets with Barbara Mason on "We Got Each Other" and "Make It Last" – plus "No One Could Compare", "Grade A Woman", "The Way Of A Woman In Love", "Castles (single version)", and "You Better Be Certain".

A stormer of a set from Nacao Zumbi – really stepping out here with a bold sound that's miles away from the group's run with Chico Science, and which marks them as a strong force to be reckoned with on their own! The production here is really ramped up – not exactly funky, but really heavy on the drums, in a way that makes the whole album bristle with energy throughout – thumping, bumping, and rumbling with an earthy brilliance that's extremely captivating – transcendent of language and cultural affiliation, and punching out with a power to firmly mark a space for Nacao Zumbi on the growing map of global grooves! Guitars and cool electronic touches color the rhythms nicely – and titles include "Pode Acreditar", "Futura", "Vai Buscar", "Na Hora De Ir", "Hoje Amanha E Depois", "Expresso Da Eletrica Avenida", and "Nebulosa".

A real stormer from Round Trip – a group whose roots go back to the legendary Sins Of Satan album on Buddah, and who also work here with great production from Al Perkins – in a style that's a bit like his music with One Way! We're not sure if "round trip" was an answer to One Way's name – but whatever the case, the group's a great part of the Perker corner of the universe at the time – and really share his wonderfully warm way with a groove! Oliver Cheatham's in the group at this point – and his vocals really help deepen their sound, especially on some of the mellower cuts, which stand as a real surprise for this sort of record – and give the whole thing a much richer vibe than you might expect. Titles include "Woman", "Nothing Wrong With Dancing", "Not In The Cards", "Let's Go Out Tonite", "Lost Inside Of You", and "Higher Consciousness".

A pair of stormers from Sun – back to back on a single CD! Wanna Make Love is one of the greatest records ever cut by Sun – a group whose records never made the charts as strongly as their contemporaries, but not for lack of quality! This set's a great batch of heavy ensemble funk with an edge that's not always heard on other Sun records – lots of razor-sharp guitars riffing away in saw-cut modes, striking hard at the grooves of the record, and chilling out nicely for the mellower cuts. The blend is wonderful – totally tight, and totally top-shelf all the way through – yet never in a commercial way at all. Titles include "Wanna Make Love", "My Woman", "Live On Dream On", "The Show Is Over", "Love Is Never Sure", and "They're Calling For Me". Sun Power is a solid smoker from Sun – the kind of tight funk set that made the group one of the greatest soul acts on Capitol Records during the late 70s! There's a wicked Ohio vibe going on throughout – everything focused together, and right on the money – even despite the large size of the ensemble – and touched with a slightly jazzy undercurrent that carries strong echoes of Earth Wind & Fire! Rhythms are nice and tight, with keyboards, guitar, and brassy horns over the top – and on the mellower cuts the vocals have a nicely compressed quality. Titles include "Conscience", "We're So Hot", "Organ Grinder", "She Lives Alone", "Time Is Passing", and "Light Me Up".

An album with a sweet title, but a very hard groove – a stone stormer from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – put together with these soaring reed lines that almost make the whole thing feel like an early 70s album from Elvin Jones! There's a very spiritual feel to the music at times – a searching quality that comes through especially in the work on tenor from Yoshio Kuniyasu, and additional flute and alto from Kochi Matsukze – as well as in the piano from Fumio Itabashi, who works here with his best modal impulses – really building up the groove in a wonderful way, and helping to keep the whole thing as soulful as some of the best US work of this nature from the mid 70s. Tracks are all originals, in Japanese – save for the group's version of the famous title tune, which offers up one mellower moment.

The record's got some tight harmony vocals, and a rhythmic approach that's more mellow soul than it is uptempo disco – although that doesn't stop the record from having a few dancefloor stormers. A short, but totally killer Ghanaian disco record from KG Band – which is led and produced by multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan – and recorded at Lagos' Decca Studios in 1980! Disco Train is a rare one – with one long grooving dancefloor stormer per side. Each cut is a really sweet blend of global boogie, funk and soul – with distinctly African elements, too! "Disco Train" rolls beyond the 10 minute mark without coming close running off the rails. The drums don't stop and the bass is nice and funky – with some groovy falsetto vocals sung in English, a nicely vamping guitar groove, horns and Afro percussion. "Loving You" runs just shy of 10 minutes on the other side – and while the title of the song and the quiet opening seconds might trick you into the thinking it's gonna be straight and mellow, it's actually got a surprisingly adventurous groove overall! The drums are a bit feverish, which is a nice foil for the easygoing vibe and romantic lyricism – and it's again anchored by some funky bass, guitar and African percussion.
