new MazeLive In New Orleans ... CD
Capitol, 1981. Used .... $7.99
It's always a sign of how huge Frankie Beverly was during the 80s that Capitol let him cut not one, but two double live albums during the early part of the decade. This one, his first, has the band grooving wonderfully before a crowd going mad in New Orleans. The tracks retain all the charm of the studio renditions – and are stretched out a bit more, with some nice interplay with the crowd. Includes early Maze classics – like "Southern Girl", "Look At California", and the big sample track "Joy & Pain".
(Tray card and booklet have some rippling from water and the booklet is stuck shut.)

MazeMaze ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good .... $4.99 Just Sold Out!
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Chapter 8 — Chapter 8 ... LP
Ariola, 1979. Very Good .... $12.99
The first album from Chapter 8 – a set that's probably best remembered for introducing the world to Anita Baker, but one that's also pretty darn great on its own! Chapter 8 have a sharply soulful focus, one that takes them a bit above some of the other mainstream ensembles of the time – a balance of grooving rhythms and deeper feelings that's just about perfect – about at the level you might get from Maze or LTD, two other groups who both sported equally soulful lead singers! Gerald Lyles sings the male parts alongside Anita, and the blend is perfect – one that should have made the record even bigger than it was at the time, but maybe all that much better, since the lack of hit quality really keeps things fresh. Titles include the singles "Ready For Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl", plus "Don't You Like It", "Let's Get Together", "Come & Boogie", "I Go Disco", and "We Need Love".
(Cover has ring & edge wear.)

Con Funk Shun — Secrets ... LP
Mercury, 1977. Very Good .... $3.99
A great early album from Con Funk Shun – a mix of funkier tunes and some excellent smooth modern ones in step with the mellower work by Cameo or Maze – done with more soaringly emotional sounds that moves beyond their peers! A love for earlier 70s styles might be what pushes Secrets above and beyond – honest, intimate, and at times just more focused in the vocals department than both the funky soul groups of the time and the quiet storm singers of the approaching early 80s – and still doesn't spare the bass, horns and funky interplay! High points include the closing instrumental "Indian Summer Love" and funky centerpiece "Ffun" –plus "Doowhachawannadoo", "Who Has The Time", "Secrets", "Tear In My Eye" and "I'll Set You Out OK".
(Includes the lyric insert. Cover has some wear.)

Herbie Hancock — Takin' Off (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1962. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
Herbie Hancock is certainly Takin Off at this point in his career – stepping into the limelight with an excellent batch of soul jazz tunes, including the first recording of his classic "Watermelon Man", the one track that probably put all his kids through school! Although that one went on to become a standard within a few short years in 60s jazz, it still sounds great here in the original – a very fresh take on the sound of soul jazz in the 60s – offered up here in a 7 minute version that has more sharp soloing than most other takes on the tune! The group here is great too – with Dexter Gordon on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the tracks are all also originals by a young Herbie – including "Watermelon Man", "The Maze", "Driftin", "Three Bags Full", "Alone & I", and "Empty Pockets".

Marcus (Rusty Evans) — Marcus (plus outtakes) ... CD
Kinetic/Lion, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $11.99 16.99
A rare album that Rusty Evans cut as Marcus for the Kinetic label – a beautifully produced set of lushly-accent psych folk – in a great package filled with demos, alternate versions and outtakes – in a 2CD set from Lion! Evans may be best remembered for his San Fransisco Sound production work, late 60s psychedelia that's a perfect encapsulation of the Haight-Ashbury scene of the time. His material as Marcus (which is his real first name) bridged that vibe with gentler folk rock touches, with lots of great acoustic instrumentation and flute in mix. His fragile, quivery vibrato vocals are laidback and unique, as is the spriritually trippy lyricism! Disc One features the original LP, followed by acoustic demos and alternates with the studio band. Includes "(We'll All) Go Together", "Time Of Our Time", "Grains Of Sand", "Royal Maze", "Color Song", "Children Of Aquarius", "Royal Maze", "High Priestess" and more. Disc Two is a full disc of alternate versions and outtakes – many of them quite different than versions that made the album – and often just as great! 42 tracks on 2CDs.

new Match — New Light (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $26.99
A Sunshine Pop treasure – and a record that perfectly straddles a few different strands of late 60s pop! The quintet have fabulous harmonies – of the sort rooted in The Four Freshmen, and given a sunny finish by The Beach Boys – but they also move here in a way that prefaces soft rock modes of the decade to come – working in arrangements from Jack Pleis that still have plenty of jazz and pop, but which also compress things in a cool way too – giving the whole album a sublime sound that's really unique! The album's not exactly like the Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends, but it's definitely got a similar vibe – and no surprise, the group start things off with a great version of "Don't Take Your Time". Other tracks include "Where Do I Go", "Mornin I'll Be Movin On", "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Love Years Coming", "A Time For Us", and "Free & Easy". Includes two bonus tracks – "Time" and "Mirror Maze Lady".

Tony Williams Lifetime — Emergency ... CD
Polydor, 1969. Used .... $8.99
A seminal jazz rock statement from drummer Tony Williams – one that has him stepping out quite far from his original "new thing" recordings of the mid 60s! The album's got a genre-forming sound that's incredibly fierce – a power trio churning of Williams drums, John McLaughlin's guitar, and Larry Young's free-thinking work on organ. The tunes are long and jamming, but also have a tight rhythmic focus that never gets too sloppy – and which virtually set the stage for a whole generation of 70s fusion players in years to come! Young and McLaughling are especially great – working here with Williams to pound out sheets of sound in a cosmic trippy maze of riffs and grooves, certainly enough to inspire the most addled rocker to head over to the jazz section! CD features the full 8 track original set – with titles that include "Sangria For Three", "Something Spiritual", "Spectrum", "Via The Spectrum Road", "Emergency", "Beyond Games", "Where" and "Vashkar".

new Cecil Brooks III — Smokin' Jazz ... CD
Muse, 1993. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cecil's smoking on the cover, and he's smoking on the record too – really cooking things up in the best old school soul jazz style of his Muse Records years! The album was recorded live in New Jersey, and it's proof that plenty of great jazz was still coming from west of the Hudson in the early 90s – a time not nearly as documented as earlier years on the Jersey scene, but still a time of great players and hip local nightspots like the Trumpets club in which the album was recorded. Brooks' tight work on drums is very firmly at the helm of the set, and other players include Antonio Hart on alto, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, and Lonnie Plaxico on bass – working with Cecil in a set that also includes a fair bit of original numbers by the group. Titles include "Gordon's Maze", "Fried Bananas", "And Another Thang", "2AM In The Village", "The Third", and "Montclair".

new Con Funk Shun — Con Funk Shun/Secrets (plus bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A super-funky set – two vintage albums from Con Funk Shun – back to back on a single CD! The self-titled Con Funk Shun album is quite different than their later, better known hits! The group sure knew how to slap that bass, even back on this first album for Mercury – but then again, they – along with other big Mercury groups like The Ohio Players – were pioneering the bass-heavy sound that would influence countless bands over the next decade in soul. This first album's actually one of the group's best, with some nice rough edges that we like even more than the smoother sound of later albums. And oddly, some of our favorite cuts are the mellower ones – like the smooth jazzy instrumental "Foley Park", which has a nice moogy solo in the middle. Other good mellow cuts include "Another World", which almost has a "Summer Madness" quality to it, plus "Forever Just Ain't Long Enough" and "Never Be The Same". Secrets is a great early album from Con Funk Shun – a mix of funkier tunes and some excellent smooth modern ones in step with the mellower work by Cameo or Maze – done with more soaringly emotional sounds that moves beyond their peers! CD also features a bonus track – "Ffun (12" version)" – a clubby killer!

new Various — Capitol Disco – 31 Disco Tracks From The Capitol Records Archives ... CD
Capitol/EMI (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Smooth and soulful club from the mighty Capitol Records – one of the few major labels to really understand a groove at the end of the 70s! The 2CD package is a wonderful tribute to the hipper soul coming out of Capitol at the time – a set that features some hits, some album tracks, and a fair bit of rarities that we've never seen on CD before – some lesser-known club cuts that sit beautifully here next to the bigger names in the collection. But big or small, the artists here are all pretty darn great – much more soul artists heading for the clubs in the late 70s than quickie disco acts just looking for a buck. The collection features 31 tracks in all – including a few non-Capitol cuts – with tracks that include "A Little Bit Of Love" by Gentle Persuasion, "Expressway To Your Heart" by Margo Thunder, "Sophisticated Lady" by Natalie Cole, "Windstorm" by Gloria Jones, "One Thing On My Mind" by Evie Sands, "Surrender" by Barrett Strong, "Do It Good" by Taste Of Honey, "I'm Back For More" by Tavares, "Save Your Love For Me" by Donna Washington, "Conscience" by Sun, "Party In Me" by Gene Dunlap, "Our Love Is Insane" by Desmond Child, "I'm Going Through Changes Now" by Brown Sugar, "Southern Girl (live)" by Maze, "Adventures In Paradise" by Minnie Riperton, "Man Up In The Sky" by Barrett Strong, "Positive Forces" by Tavares, "Sixty Thrills A Minute" by Mystic Merlin, "Street Corner" by Ashford & Simpson, "We All Need Love" by Troiano, "Annie Mae" by Natalie Cole, "Don't Tie Me Down" by Brown Sugar, and "Ooh Child" by Charles Jackson.

Perfect stuff for fans of 80s groove! This set features 12 killer modern soul cuts pulled from the catalog of the Capitol/EMI labels – home to some of the smoothest most soulful work in the early 80s, lots of which is pretty darn tough to get on reissue these days. According to the notes, all the tracks are taken from the original 12" single mixes – and the times for nearly all tracks is well over 5 minutes, perfect for groovers! Titles include "Just Can't Give You Up" by Mystic Merlin, "Love On A Summer Night" by The McCrarys, "Dancing In The Night" by Lanier & Co, "Working Up A Sweat" by Full Circle, "On The Beat" by BB&Q Band, "Joy & Pain" by Maze, "Rock Me Tonight" by Freddie Jackson, "There Ain't Nothin (Like Your Lovin)" by Paul Laurance, "Love's Comin At Ya" by Melba Moore, "Sound Of Music" by Dayton, and "Solid" by Ashford & Simpson.

new Various — Strut 'N' Get Up – Funky Fat Slices Of Groove Cut From Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy funk from the deeper EMI catalog – packaged with a Blue Note label, but featuring gems from a wealth of related labels too! The assortment of styles here is really wonderful – and runs from gritty deep funk, to warmer soul jazz, to some sweet 70s groovers with a really slinky feel – all laid out in a way that really makes sense, and hardly lets you feel like you're jumping around from genre to genre! Titles include "Momma" by Ronnie Foster, "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow (Baretta's Theme)" by Earl Klugh, "Bring Down The Birds" by Herbie Hancock, "Shack Up (parts 1 & 2)" by Banbara, "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Daisy Mae" by Raul De Souza, "You Are The World" by Donald Byrd, "Movin" by Brass Construction, "Punch Bowl" by Alan Parker, "Ain't It Funky Now" by Jimmy McGriff, "Color Blind" by Maze, "Communication" by Bobby Womack, "Funky Sneakers" by Willie Bobo, "Funky In Here" by Willard Burton, and "Street Lady" by Donald Byrd. 18 cuts in all!

One of Motown's leading hopes in the early 80s soul scene, and for good reason too! These guys have a wonderfully well-rounded approach – great on ballads and even more compelling on groovers – a balance here that puts them proudly in the company of contemporaries like Maze or Slave, with a sound that's sometimes right in the middle of both. Titles include "Don't Take My Love Away", "There'll Never Be", "I Wanna Be Closer", "Best Beat In Town", "I Call Your Name", "You & I", and "My Friend In the Sky".

We Produce/Stax, 1981. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Nice compilation of the Temprees' great vocal group sides cut for the Stax/We Produce label in the early 70's. If you don't know this stuff, their harmonies are great, and they deliver up a soulful batch of tracks that sound more like they would have come from the great east coast group recordings in Philly and New Jersey from the time, than they would have come from Memphis. 12 tracks in all "Love...Can Be So Wonderful", "I'm For You, You For Me", "Explain It To Her Mama", "Love's Maze", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "My Baby Love", "A Thousand Miles Away", "You Make The Sun Shine", "At Last", "Come And Get Your Love", "I Love, I Love" and "(Girl) I Love You".

new Various — Cosmos – Outer Space Disco Funk Ignites Blue Note & TK Dancefloors ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A funky explosion of dancefloor grooves – key 70s club cuts from Capitol, Blue Note, and TK Records – all packaged together in a massively upbeat set! Most tracks here move at a pretty quick clip – and represent the funkier side of the 70s disco scene – cuts that draw more from tight instrumental jamming than from smoother tricks in the studio! Almost all numbers have some sort of lyrics, but they usually take second stage to the rhythms – and a fair bit of the numbers are long, with timings that move well past the five minute mark. Titles include "Changin" by Brass Construction, "Do What You Wanna Do" by T-Connection, "Is It In" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" by KC & The Sunshine Band, "Freak In Freak Out" by Timmy Thomas, "Singing Hallelujah" by Queen Samantha, "Caricatures" by Donald Byrd, "Pack It Up" by Gonzalez, "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me" by Peter Brown, and "Time Is On My Side" by Maze.

new Various — Scoctopus – The In Sound From Octopus Records ... CD
Schema (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A legendary set of sound library grooves – and actually one of the first to kick off the genre! The package brings together rare tracks from the small Italian Octopus label – not nearly as well-known as De Wolfe, KPM, or other sound library giants – but an equally great source of rare funky jazz cuts that were never issued to the public at the time – recorded as part of the huge wave of studio activity in Italy during the 60s and 70s! Given that the set was collected by Schema, you can bet that the tracks are right on the money – and titles include "Curly" by Stellio Subelli, "Sculturea Beat" by Angelo Baroncini, "Diacromeico" by Sandro Brugnolini, "Games" by Pasquale Castiglione, "First Black" by Mario Molino, "Maze" by Roberto Conrado, and "Verso L'Infinito" by Alessandro Alessondroni.

Antibalas — Antibalas ... CD
Daptone, 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet".

Michael Barson — Agonizing Love – The Golden Era Of Romance Comics (paperback) ... Book
HarperCollins, 2011. New Copy Book .... $7.99 29.99
A treasure trove of 50s romance comics – brought together in a great-looking package, with helpful framing from author Michael Barson! The core material is great – way more than the soppy romance stories you might think – and instead some really compelling work that really gets at the worries and anxieties of America in the post-war years. Sure, there's certainly tales of gals looking for love in all the wrong places – but you'd also be amazed at how much of this stuff offers up a larger comment on society as well – penned with surprisingly thoughtful prose, and illustrated with relatively mature images too. If we had one complaint, it would be that Barson doesn't give us enough detail about the artists and writers of the material – but that's only because the whole thing's so beautiful, we want to know more! 208 pages, softcover, in full color.

new Earth Wind & Fire — That's The Way Of The World (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1975. Used .... $4.99
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Shining Star (future star)", "All About Love (first impressions)", "Happy Feelin (anatomy of a groove)", "Caribou Chaser (jazzy jam)", and "That's The Way Of The World (Latin expedition)".

Matthew Herbert Big Band — There's Me & There's You ... CD
K7, 2008. Used .... $9.99
Matthew Herbert never fails to amaze our ears, but he does so even more than ever on this stunning Big Band set! The album's more dynamic, more creative, and more experimental than any of Herbert's other work – hardly the slower, cinematic modes of some recordings – or the jazz-meets-groove styles of others – and instead a rich new palette of musical colors, one that pushes Matthew far far from the mainstream! The work's more orchestral than big band – complicated in tone and rhythm at times, but always finding a space for soul – either in solo instrumental passages, or in the great vocals on the record – sung by Eska Mtungwazi in a really beautiful style, echoing out brilliantly over the larger orchestrations – which themselves were recorded in the House Of Commons and London City Hall. Titles include "Pontificate", "The Yesness", "Battery", "Regina", "One Life", "Just Swing", "The Rich Man's Prayer", and "The Story".

Kluster — Klopfzeichen ... CD
Schwann Verlag/Bureau B (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $12.99
A mindblowing moment from the trio of Dieter Moebius, Hans Joachim Rodelius, and Konrad Schnitzler – an incredible studio exploration that initiated a rich generation of German experimentation! The trio are much harder and darker here than on any of their later recordings – especially solo sides – coming up with new sounds, powerful tones, and waves of sonic energy that never fail to amaze us, even after all these years! The original notes call the music the sound of the machine – which is definitely true, but in ways that are even more abstracted – and, dare we say, more powerfully resonant than any later work from the industrial generation. Each song spans a side of a record – and titles include "Kluster 1(Electric Music Und Texte)" and "Kluster 2 (Electric Music)".

Bobby Lyle — Genie ... CD
Capitol/Soul Brother (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $16.99
A funky fusion classic – and quite possibly Bobby Lyle's most perfectly realized album! The set was Bobby's first full US outing, and it's filled with soaring, riffing keyboards that stretch out into territory explored a few years before by Johnny Hammond and Lonnie Liston Smith! The real difference, though, is the album's sweet soulful production from Wayne Henderson – who hooks in the best bits of Bobby's sound, and fuses them with a modern soul-styled groove that creates the same blend of jazz and R&B that you'd get on some of Eddie Henderson's best records from the time, or some of the best Ronnie Foster work on Columbia from a few years later. Bobby's keyboards are capable of hitting both a soulful groove and a deep jazzy vibe – and the record's got a rich palette of tunes that never fail to amaze us! Titles include "Mother Nile", "You Think Of Her", "The Genie", "Pisces", "Magic Ride" and "Night Breeze".

Frank McComb — Straight From The Vault ... CD
Boobeescoot, 2004. New Copy .... $8.99
Incredible work from neo soul maestro Frank McComb – the kind of a record that will have you saying "dang, what's that classic jam" – and then being amazed that it's a brand new set from Frank! The record surpasses even the quality of Frank's amazing album The Truth – and sparkles with a deeply soulful approach that we'd rank right up there with the best work by Stevie Wonder and Donnie Hathaway! (And mind you, we're not making that comparison lightly – as we know the risks of ranking Frank so highly!) The keyboards on the set are every bit as great as the vocals, too – and dip, turn, and sneak around with all these seductive little touches – like bending notes that seem to "sing" of their own accord next to the vocals. We've got Frank to thank for finally letting this record free – and these copies come from the maestro himself, sent to the world on a pillow of soulful love. Titles include "I'd Be A Fool", "To The Left", "The Thing I Failed To Do", "Each Day", "King Of The Open Road", "Morning Glory", and "The Things That You Do".
(This is Frank McComb's own version – a self produced CDR in a slimline case, with color copy cover.)

Mostly Other People Do The Killing — Slippery Rock ... CD
Hot Cup, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
Marvelous work from Mostly Other People Do The Killing – and a record that's quite different from its cheesy looking cover! The quartet never fail to amaze us with their creative energy – and this time around, they're paying homage to that moment in 80s jazz when the underground was brimming up in the mainstream – that great point when creative musicians were finding wider exposure on labels like Columbia, Novus, or Blue Note – yet still serving up sounds that were true to their roots. The cheesy packaging is a nod to the visual aesthetics of the time – and the music is a great contrast, which was not uncommon for the period – lots of sharp reeds from Jon Irabagon, percolatedly soulful trumpet riffs from Peter Evans, snapping percussion from Kevin Shea, and these warm, round, deep lines on acoustic bass from Moppa Elliott – who also wrote and produced the set. Titles include "Sayre", "President Polk", "Can't Tell Shipp From Shohola", "Hearts Content", "Jersey Shore", and "Dexter, Wayne, & Mobley".

Orchestra Super Mazembe — Mazembe at 45 RPM Vol 1 ... CD
Sterns (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
A cool collection of singles from this Kenyan group of the 70s – one that focuses on the group's long singles of the time – and features tracks that not only never appeared on full length albums, but which also haven't ever been reissued on CD! Most numbers are well past the five minute mark – despite their origin as singles – and the tunes often have these snakey grooves with beautiful guitar parts ringing out – quite melodic, almost more so than the vocals at points – which themselves engage the rhythmic component of the tunes strongly. Titles include "South View", "Okova", "Amina", "Izabela", "Kingo Mwambe", and "Naleki Na Ba Zone".

new Parliament — Funkentelechy Vs The Placebo Syndrome ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Ahhhhh . . . By this point, George Clinton and the P-Funk team were on top of the world! The record is a masterful dose of slick mothership jamming – perfectly woven together with that tightly compressed style that really served Clinton's production work well. The tracks are long, but never too loopy – and thanks to help from the Bernie Worrell, Jerome Brailey, Gary Shider, and the Horny Horns, the album stays very tight instrumentally all the way through! Loads of Parliament classics, including "Bop Gun", "Funkentelechy", "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk", and the massive "Flash Light", which we've heard a million times, but which never ceases to amaze us!

Sam & Dave — Soul Men/I Thank You (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Stax/Edsel (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
Two classics from this legendary team – packaged here with bonus tracks too! First up is the self-titled Sam & Dave album – one of the best ever albums by this incredible soul duo! Sam & Dave may have been one of the bigger names on the 60s scene, but they also had a sheer raw soul approach that blew away most of their contemporaries – a way of trading vocal lines then combining them that infused their songs with a tremendous amount of power – and which gets past any easy cliches you may have about Atlantic or Stax soul of the time! The album's virtually a blueprint for countless other acts that cropped up to steal the duo's style in years to come – but it's still one of the best of the bunch, and almost without equal. Titles include "Soul Man", "May I Baby", "Hold It Baby", "I'm With You", and "Rich Kind Of Poverty". I Thank You is a killer by Sam & Dave – recorded in Memphis with crack work by the team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and unfortunately a record that was recorded by Stax, but stolen by Atlantic in their 1968 takeover of the label! Sam & Dave are at the height of their powers here – hitting on all burners with that tight funked-up southern soul style that made them one of the most popular acts of their generation – and although the pair may be familiar, they've got an energy that never fails to amaze us on a record like this! Titles include "I Thank You", "Don't Turn Your Heater On", "Love Is After Me", "Talk To The Man", "Don't Waste That Love", "Wrap It Up", and "You Don't Know What You Mean To Me". 2CD package features 9 bonus tracks – including "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down", "Soothe Me (live)", "This Is Your World", "Can't You Find Another Way Of Doing It", "Still Is The Night", "Soul Sister Brown Sugar", "Come On In", "Born Again", and "Get It".

new Lol Coxhill — Alone & Together ... CD
Emanem (UK), 1990s. New Copy .... $15.99 19.99 Just Sold Out!
Partly solo work, partly duet material – hence the title – and a rich demonstration of the continued greatness of Lol Coxhill into the 90s! Coxhill never fails to amaze us – and his work here on both soprano and sopranino saxophone goes way past the obvious – always inventive in its phrasing, and able to come up with sounds and shapes we've never heard from any other player – not just blowing for blowing's sake, but a really sensitive, conscious, and sometimes witty approach to the process – great enough on its own, but even more amazing on the duo tracks on the set. These include one totally cool number that has hurdy-gurdy from Stevie Wishart, who also plays violin on two more numbers – and another track with cello and live electronics from Marcio Mattos. All titles previously unissued – and titles include "First Rare Duet", "Third Rare Duet", "A Rare Sopranino Solo", "The Festival Solo", "A Little Bit More", and "Les Folies D'Ossette".

new Antibalas — Antibalas (with bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
(Vinyl version includes code for full album download.)

new David Boykin — Eye Of The Beholder ... CD
Dreamtime, 2004. New Copy .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real departure for saxophonist David Boykin – an album of solo material, performed on soprano sax and Bb Clarinet – in a style that recalls the most experimental work of Roscoe Mitchell, and which also has ties to the solo recordings of Evan Parker and Steve Lacy! Boykin's really concerned with sound in space on the album – and blows with a freely creative vibe that surpasses even his best earlier work. The tunes start out slow, and spare, but then unfold as the album goes on – and demonstrate some incredible tone and control that we never expected from Boykin! Originally part of a live performance with a dancer, but more than compelling enough on its own – and with tracks that include "Transfixed", "And Amazement", "Of Wonder", "With A Gaze", and "Upon The Beloved".

new Earth Wind & Fire — That's The Way Of The World (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1975. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Out Of Stock
