new Partners — Last Disco In Paris ... CD
Marlin/Henry Stone, 1979. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
A sweet disco set from the late 70s – the only one we've ever seen by the Partners, who we're guessing were some sort of European studio combo! The sound is mighty nice – exactly what you'd guess from the title – the best sort of funky Euro disco style of the time, with some sweet harmony vocals that almost have a Bee Gees vibe – yet never nearly as poppy as their disco tunes! There's a warmth here that marks the Paris in contrast to other European club sounds of the time – and attention to lyrics that goes way past the usual "let's throw a singer at some grooves" – especially on the album's mellower cuts. Titles include "Partners", "Friday", "Dance", "Green Eyes", and "Love Meant To Be".

Quartz — Quartz ... CD
Marlin/Henry Stone, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Sweet spacey disco from Quartz – and a set that definitely lives up to the icy image on the cover! The set's in the best mode of the French club scene of the 70s – a groove that certainly draws complex instrumentation from the progressive moments of a few years before – but which also hones things into a much tighter, funkier groove for the clubs – really the beginning of the Euro Cosmic sound, especially given the great keyboards on the record! Rhythms almost have a pre-house approach at times – although once the instrumentation kicks in, things get a bit more complex – and the vocals are often merely there as another element in the mix – leaving most of the focus on the keyboards! Side one features the extended "Quartz", and other tracks include "Chaos", "For Geromine", and "Beyond The Clouds".

John Tropea — Tropea ... LP
Marlin, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $4.99
The first album from guitarist John Tropea – ace 70s session guitarist, but a surprisingly great leader and arranger in his own right too! Tropea's working here in a vibe that's clearly influence by the CTI sound – smooth but funky fusion – laid down in prime studio conditions, but still nicely soulful throughout, and without any of the BS that crept into other overly-jamming or too-slick records from the time. Guitar's the lead solo instrument on the set, but the album has a lot of other strong work by players that Deodato, Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, and Rubens Bassini – making for a very tight set that's stood up wonderfully through the years. Titles include "The Bratt", "Tambourine", "7th Heaven", "The Jingle", "Just Blue", "Muff", and "Dreams".

Phil Upchurch — Phil Upchurch ... CD
Marlin/Henry Stone, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99
One of the sweetest fusion sets ever recorded from guitarist Phil Upchurch – a set that's less trippy than his earlier albums, but one that more than makes up for that with a tightly soulful groove! Production is by John Tropea and George Benson – and you can definitely hear their touches here – giving Upchurch a strong sense of focus, yet still allowing plenty of room for those cool sounds and odd lines on his guitar. Arrangements are great throughout – partly handled by Leon Pendarvis, who also plays keyboards on the record with Richard Tee – and augmented by string and flute backings from Deodato. Titles include a great take on "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus "Free", "Good Times", "Church Street Station", "It's Almost Five", "Foolin Around", and "Cyrenna".
(Note: although these CDs are legit, they are produced as CDRs with artwork by copyright owner Henry Stone.)

Michal Urbaniak — Ecstasy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Marlin/Clinck (Japan), 1978. New Copy .... $28.99
One of the most soul-based albums in Michal Urbaniak's catalog – a session originally done with TK records during the height of their dancefloor years, fitted up with some really great clubby grooves! The sound here is a mix of fusion and soul – done in a way that still gives Urbaniak plenty of room to solo on violin, sax, and keys – but which also sets up a warmer groove overall and really lets the vocals come center stage. Urszula Dudziak sings on about half the tracks – and other vocals are by Kenyatta and Calvin Brown – and the jazzy inflections of the tune really set this apart from lots of the other Miami disco on Marlin, giving the record a much deeper feel overall, and a quality that's held up very nicely through the years! Dark edges mix with warmer moments nicely, almost in a Roy Ayers way – and titles include "A Day In The Park", "Just A Funky Feeling", "Body Rub", "Ecstasy", "Creation", and "Want's Ta Make You Feel Good".

Voyage — Fly Away ... LP
Marlin, 1978. Near Mint- .... $1.99
The second US album from Euro disco outfit Voyage – a group who manage to bring in some nice progressive and jazzy elements to the mix! There's almost a jamming rock-gone-disco approach to a few of the best numbers – thanks to a strong use of heavy guitars and keyboards, and a real rock-like phrasing at times. All tracks are longish, with TK-styled breakdowns on the better tunes – and lead vocals are handled by Sylvia Mason. Titles include "Souvenirs", "Kechack Fantasy", "Eastern Trip", "Let's Fly Away", "Golden Eldorado", and "Gone With The Music".
(Cover has a torn cutout notch.)

Voyage — Voyage ... LP
Marlin, 1977. Very Good .... $1.99
A standout classic of the French disco scene of the 70s – and a record that found a perfect way to bridge the gap between spacier grooves and tighter rhythms for the mainstream! The 70s French scene was often known for plenty of great keyboards – kind of an offshoot of earlier prog, focused towards the dancefloor in the disco generation – and Voyage were one of the greatest groups to put this whole groove together – working here on some nice long tracks that build in a really organic way – often from fast-running drums and basslines, peppered with riffing guitars and keyboards – and often touched with some cool exotic elements as well! There's just a bit of vocals on the set, but most of the focus is instrumental – rolling out beautifully on cuts that include "Latin Odyssey", "Bayou Village", "Scotch Machine", "Orient Express", "Lady America", "Point Zero", and "From East To West".
(Cover has some wear, a cutout notch, and a small split on the top seam.)

new Beautiful Bend/Caress — Make That Feeling Come Again/Caress – Disco Recharge – Boris Midney Vol 1 ... CD
Marlin/Harmless (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two disco killers – together in one single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is Beautiful Bend – a classic album of stripped-down disco grooves – featuring spacey keyboard work from Boris Midney, and lots of heavy congas by Larry Washington! The real focus here is the instrumental work – those long, stretched-out grooves that seemed to be the trademark of the Miami scene in the 70s – especially given the use of percussion here. And although the vocals are mostly of the chorus type, they do a good enough job to emphasize the grooves – and help get the tracks moving forward in all the right ways! Tracks are all quite long – and titles include "Make That Feeling Come Again", "Ah Do It", "That's The Meaning", and "Boogie Motion". CD also features the bonus tracks "That's The Meaning/Boogie Motion (12" mix)" and "Make That Feeling Come Again/Ah Do It (12" mix)". Next up is the self-titled RFC album from Caress – a pretty great set done in a top-shelf clubby mode! Keyboards, horns, arrangements, and production are all by Boris Midney – who'd be working here almost as a one-man show, were it not for the added strings and vocals by Kevin Owens and Chequita Jackson. The set features 4 long jams – and includes "Catch The Rhythm", Charmed", You Got It Too Uptight and "Love Spell". CD also features bonus tracks – "Catch The Rhythm (promo only 12" mix)" and "You Got It Too Uptight/Love Spell (promo only 12" mix)".

new Ralph MacDonald — Path ... LP
Marlin, 1978. Used Gatefold .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ralph MacDonald's two great albums of the late 70s – and a complicated mix of jazz, soul, and a variety of roots elements. MacDonald shows a lot of sides of his personality here – stretching out in the ambitious "The Path" suite, which takes up all of side one, then hitting some more laidback jazz funk on the shorter tracks on side two. "The Path" traces a wide development of percussion – from African styled drumming on the intro, to some tighter clubbier jazz funk by the Bamboo Steel Band on later passages. Side two features a great percussive jammer called "It Feels So Good" – done with almost a Latin Jazz feel, and some sweet electric piano – plus the tracks "Smoke Rings & Wine", "I Cross My Heart", and "If I'm Still Around Tomorrow".
(Cover has ring & edge wear and a peeled spot from sticker removal.)

new Uncle Louie — Uncle Louie's Here ... CD
Marlin/Henry Stone, 1976. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tight bit of dancefloor funk from the duo of Frank and Eddie Dillard – one on guitar, one on bass, and both on vocals – both working here with some great clubby production from Walter Murphy! The set's got a bit more edge than Murphy's own records – thanks to the emphasis on the Dillard instrumentation – and the rhythms are often nice and sharp, in that disco style that's almost hinting at a break at points – and which might have been at home in a South Bronx mix as much as in the clubs! The set includes the single "Full Tilt Boogie" plus other tracks that include "I Like Funky Music", "Sky High", "Everybody's Got One, "We Came To Play", and "Bad Motor Folk".

new Betty Wright — My First Time Around ... CD
Atco (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A late 60s southern soul gem from then 14-year-old belter Betty Wright – her early singles for the Alston label that eventually became her debut album for Atlantic! Clarence Reid wrote most of the tracks, with arrangements and production handled by Steve Alaimo's Marlin Productions. It's done in the raw southern soul style which made that organization's name at the time – and Betty carries that groove incredibly well – as well as a woman of any age group! Essential! Cuts include "I'm Thankful", "The Best Girls Can't Always Win", "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do", "I'm Going To Hate Myself In The Morning", "I Can't Stop My Heart", He's Bad, Bad, Bad", "Funny How Love Grows Cold", the incredible "Cry Like a Baby", "Circle Of Heartbreak", "Just You" and more!
