Joao Donato, Carlos Lyra, Marcos Valle, & Roberto — Os Bossa Nova ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2008. New Copy .... $6.99
A really warm and wonderful little record – one that features the collaborative talents of these four bossa nova giants, all coming together in a really relaxed, intimate setting! Although most of these artists didn't work together in the 60s, they all share a very similar spirit, and come together beautifully here – all four working together on the first and last track in the set, then splitting apart to work in smaller duos, and each take a track or two on their own. Instrumentation is mostly small combo, and warmly jazzy – and Valle, Lyra, Menescal, and Donato all handle the arrangements too – furthering the collaborative spirit of the set. Titles include "Balansamba", "Ate Quem Sabe", "Tereza Da Praia", "Ate O Fim", "Bewitched", "Sextante", "Gente", "Vagamente", "De Um Jeito Diferente", and "Ciume".

Marcos ValleAnos 80 (Vontade De Rever Você/Marcos Valle 1983/Tempo Da Gente/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Som Livre/Discobertas (Brazil), 1980s. New Copy 3CD .... $39.99
Three incredible albums from Marcos Valle – quite different than his 60s and 70s records, but really wonderful too! These 80s sets have Valle coming off of a brief stretch working in the US on soul music – particularly some sublime efforts with Leon Ware for Elektra Records – a great influence on the sound of the music here, as Marcos has picked up a cool, soulful vibe that's a surprisingly great addition to his repertoire! Most tracks often have a groove – kind of a sweet 80s extension of the complicated funk modes that Valle used a decade before – and there's a tight, hook-heavy groove to some of our favorite numbers – almost like the best modern soul of the 80s from the US, but with Portugese lyrics! All albums were only issued in Brazil – and from what we know, the Tempo Da Gente album is reissued here for the first time ever! 3CD set also features 3 bonus tracks – "O Sequestro", "Bicicleta", and "Beta Menina".

Marcos ValleEstatica ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2010. New Copy .... $16.99
An incredible record from Marcos Valle – maybe our favorite-ever of his recent-revival years! The sound here is sublime – a warm blend of funky rhythms, bossa roots, and larger orchestrations – all very much in the spirit of those legendary albums that Valle recorded for EMI/Odeon right at the start of the 70s – soaring, sophisticated, and never without a groove! Valle did all the arrangements for the set, but gets some great help on strings and horns from Jesse Sedoc – whose touches are really a key part of the Odeon-styled sound here – and a number of the tracks feature female vocals duetting with Marcos' lead, in a mode that's just like his classic work with Anamaria! Titles include "Prefixo", "Vamos Sambar", "Novo Acorde", "1995", "Esphera", "Eu Vou", "Papo De Maluco", and "Baiao Maracatu".

Marcos ValleGarra ... CD
Odeon/Light In The Attic, 1971. New Copy .... $13.99
One of Marcos Valle's most strangely beautiful albums – a set that really his him stepping off strongly from his bossa nova years – really moving into mindblowing music with a range of styles that's simply incredible! There's definitely a bit of bossa at the core, but the larger orchestrations are much more complex, and plenty darn groovy – bringing in some complicated jazz changes, a bit of soul, and even a touch of funk – making the first time that Valle ever worked in such a mode. The overall sound's nearly impossible to describe, but that's what makes the record so great – possibly the best place to start if you've ever wondered why Valle's gotten so much attention from the worldwide groove scene over the years! Titles include "Ao Amigo Tom", "O Cafona", "Minha Voz Vira Do Sol Da America", "Paz E Futebol", "Com Mais De 30", "Garra", "Wanda Vidal", and "Black is Beautiful". New reissue features in-depth liner notes, song notes from Valle, and lyrics in English too!

Marcos ValleMarcos Valle (1970) (with bonus track) ... CD
Odeon/Light In The Attic, 1970. New Copy .... $13.99
Some of the most brilliantly baroque work ever recorded by Marcos Valle – an obscure 1970 album that collects together tunes from a few of his odd soundtrack experiments of the late 60s, plus a few others that are in a very similar vein! Marcos is really going over the top here – breaking way way out from his bossa roots, into a mode that has him pushing the envelope of Brazilian music to unheard of heights, with equal parts groove and sophistication, hardly ever matched by any other artist since! Things are funky one minute, groovy the next, and subtly sophisticated at other points – a completely captivating blend that's one of the best illustrations of Valle's genius we can think of. Titles include "Quarentao Simpatico", "Ele E Ela", "Dez Leis", "Freio Aerodinamico", "Os Grilos", "Suite Imaginaria", and "Esperando O Messias". Also includes the bonus track "Berenice"! New reissue features in-depth liner notes, song notes from Valle, and lyrics in English too!

Marcos VallePrevisao Do Tempo ... CD
Odeon/Light In The Attic, 1973. New Copy .... $13.99
An insanely wonderful album that will always remain one of the all-time favorites of the Dusty Groove staff! This beautiful batch of tracks by Brazilian singer/songwriter Marcos Valle has him pushing waaaay past his bossa work of the 60s – into a cool 70s mix of electronics and sexy scoring, for a sound that's a mix of Brazilian rhythms with other styles that evoke Italian soundtracks and French pop backing. That description hardly does the record justice, though, because the whole thing's wonderful – and it's got a feeling that's unlike anything else we've ever stocked – every bit as warmly watery as the image of Marcos in a swimming pool on the cover. It's no wonder that the album was one of Valle's last great recordings – because with tracks as good as "Mentira", "Mais Do Que Valsa", "Nao Tem Nada Nao", "Samba Fatal", and "Tiu-Ba-La-Quieba", it's hard to top yourself!

Marcos ValleVento Sul (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Odeon/Light In The Attic, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $18.99
A holy grail! This is one of Marcos Valle's best-ever albums – and it's certainly the one to best realize the larger scope he was heading for in the years after the bossa – that sublime mix of jazz and more expansive arrangements – a perfect fit for the growing sophistication of Valle's songwriting. The record is fantastic – done with a sweeping sound that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and put together with an approach to composition that is virtually indescribable. There's a huge amount of influences running through here, and the album is proof that Valle was one of Brazil's richest talents, never ceasing to perfect and transform his craft – even long after he could have rested on the laurels of his success! Tracks include "Democustico", "Revolucao Organica", "Vento Sul", "Paisagem De Mariana", and "Pista O2".
(Heavy gatefold pressing – with notes, lyrics, and a great cover that's even better than the original!)

Marcos ValleVontade De Rever Voce ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 1980. Used .... $11.99
Funky soul from the great Marcos Valle – a great blend of mellow grooves and upbeat tunes recorded at the same time Valle was working in the US with Leon Ware! The style here is very similar to Ware's 2 albums for Elektra – both of which feature work from Valle, and include tunes that are also done here in Portuguese versions! Marcos makes a real departure from some of his earlier work here, and emerges as a surprisingly great soul star with plenty of talents for penning two-step tunes and keyboard-heavy tracks that glisten with a sweet California groove. A few tracks recall some of Valle's Odeon work – like the baroque instrumental "Camina Grande" – but we're most partial to the soul tracks that dominate the record, and which include "Bicho No Cio", "Pecados De Amor","Garimpando" and "A Paraiba Nao e Chicago".

Marcos ValleSamba '68 ... CD
1968. New Copy .... Around June 19, 2013
One of the grooviest Verve albums of all time – a rare American session from Brazilian legend Marcos Valle – and his only US album to feature vocals! The album's even dreamier than Valle's early bossa sides from Brazil – and the setting has some nice Verve-like touches from Deodato – who handled the arrangements, and brings a nicely airy, nicely jazzy style to the record. Most tunes are sung as duets with his lovely wife Anamaria – made famous by the album's landmark groover "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" – an English-language version of Valle's earlier "Os Grilos". Other titles are all great too – and sport English lyrics that hardly ever got much exposure. In addition to the great "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", other titles include "The Face I Love", "She Told Me She Told Me", "Pepino Beach", "Chup Chup I Got Away", and "Batucada".

Warner (Brazil), 1992. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A great Marcos Valle appearance from recent years – a set that captures him at the time of his excellent comeback on Far Out Records – but in a way that's different than his recordings for that label! The recording is nice and intimate, in that great Ensaio way – very classic, and a deeply personal retrospective of Valle's years of music in Brazil – in a setting that has him performing mostly unplugged versions of his tunes on piano and guitar. Titles include "Mustang Cor De Sangue", "Samba De Verao", "Gente", "Terra De Ninguem", "Um Novo Tempo", "Azimuth", "Black Is Beautiful", and "Com Mais De 30".

Antonio Adolfo & A Brazuca — Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca (1970) ... CD
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1970. New Copy .... $3.99
A lost treasure from Antiono Adolfo – keyboard player, arranger, and one of the greatest Brazilian talents of his generation! Adolfo's sound and style is contemporaneous with the best work of Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, and others – and like them, he has an approach that mixes together jazz, MPB, baroque orchestrations, easy scoring, and a bit of funk – similar to the best work of the Blue Brazil generation on EMI/Odeon Records. The approach is one that's rarely been matched by any other artist – and it's a strong reason why Adolfo's records from this period are extremely sought after in the world of collectors. This beautiful album from 1970 has Adolfo working with the group A Brazuca – who bring some wonderful vocal harmonies to the set, mixing with strings, guitars, and some great electric piano work from Adolfo. Includes the breezy classic "Transamazonica", plus the cuts "Que Se Dane", "Atencao Atencao", "Claudia", "Panorama", "Tributo A Victor Manga", "Caminhada", "Grilopus No 1", and "Cotidiano".

Rosalia De Souza — Brasil Precisa Balancar ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy 2LP .... $15.99
The best work so far from Rosalia De Souza – a session that features production and guitar from bossa legend Roberto Menescal, and a sound that's deeper and even more classic than any of Rosalia's other work! Most of the instrumentation here is in an older acoustic mode – piano, percussion, and horns arranged by Menescal with that beautifully lighter than air style that he first pioneered in the 60s – an approach that lets Rosalia's vocals drift along on wonderfully gentle rhythms, and dominate the record even more than before. Given that the set's on Schema, there's still a nicely rhythmic component to most numbers – but overall, the record's a bold step forward even for the label – similar to the all-acoustic move made by Nicola Conte in his own recordings! Marcos Valle joins in on vocals on "Que Bandeira", and other tunes include "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", "Voz Da Lapa", "Jogo De Roda", "Rio De Janeiro", "Mar Amar", "Um Novo Dia", and "Vivo Sonhando".

Dee Felice Trio — In Heat ... LP
King/Bethlehem, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A killer album of soul jazz piano instrumentals – produced by James Brown! The Dee Felice Trio were a groovy combo from Cincinnati, and James Brown took a shine to them at some point in the late 60s. They backed James on one record, but their big moment was this album – which had James producing, and the group grooving nicely on some hard piano jammers! The sound's a lot more stripped-down than usual for James, but the groove is very nice! Includes an excellent funky version of "There Was A Time", a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", and the tracks "Summer In The City", "In Heat", "Both Sides Now", and "Never". Darn hard to find, too!

Johnny Mathis — So Nice/Johnny Mathis Sings ... CD
Mercury/Real Gone, 1966/1967. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98
A pair of gems from Johnny Mathis' years at Mercury Records – back to back on a single CD! First up is So Nice, an album that definitely lives up to its title – with a sound that extends strongly from the lushness of Mathis' early 60s recordings, but which also has a bit of a nod to the late 60s scene too – thanks to tunes from Marcos Valle, Michel Legrand, Burt Bacharach, and others! Glenn Osser handles most of the arrangements – in that shimmering strings style that always seemed to work best for Johnny during this period – a mode that never overshadows his vocals, and really lets that Mathis magic unfurl – on titles that include "The Music That Makes Me Dance", "I Will Wait For You", "So Nice", "Elusive Butterfly", "What Now My Love", and "What The World Needs Now Is Love". Johnny Mathis Sings is the final Johnny Mathis album for Mercury Records – and one of our favorites from the time! There's a nice little bounce to some of these cuts that really opens Johnny up – a style that's never too groovy, but which brings in some slight 60s syncopation to the rhythms – albeit in a gentle sort of way. Strings and horns shimmer over the top, next to Johnny's great vocals – which are still the center stage of the session – almost a bit more mature, and sounding wonderful on cuts that include "Strangers In The Night", "Who Can Say", "I Wish You Love", "The Second Time Around", "Sunny", "Saturday Sunshine", and "Eleanor Rigby".

Dreamy bossa pop from the A&M studios of the 60s – the Brasil 66 sound at its best! The style here is a perfect blend of real Brazilian influences and some of the hipper styles bubbling in the LA studio scene of the time – all locked together perfectly by Sergio Mendes, in the twin-voiced style that let Brasil 66 transform any tune they could get their hands on! There's some really great numbers here of Brazilian origin – including Joao Donato's "The Frog", Marcos Valle's "Batucada", and Gilberto Gil's "Roda" – not to mention Sergio's own "Look Around", which is an especially charming number! Other titles include "The Look Of Love", "Pradizer Adeus", and "Like A Lover".

Odeon/Discobertas (Brazil), Late 60s. New Copy 7CD .... $84.99
Legendary work from a crucial component of Brazilian culture in the late 60s – the International Song Festivals of the time – a very important way of presenting both new talent and new compositions as well! This first volume brings together seven different albums from the years 1966 to 1968 – all originally issued on the Ritmos and Odeon labels – with work by artists who include Marcos Valle, Dori Caymmi, Beth Carvalho, Golden Boys, Taiguara, Vocalistas Modernos, Luiza, Clara Nunes, Elza Soares, Doris Monteiro, Maria Creuza, Morgana, Miltinho, Stelinha Egg, Reginaldo Bessa, Agostinho Dos Santos, Maria Jose, Quarteto 004, Milton Nascimento, Maricenne Costa, Zeze Gonzaga, Maysa, Quarteto Em Cy, Tuca, MPB4, Silvio Cesar, Paulinho Nogueira, Carlos Hamilton, Elis Regina, and many others! Jorge Ben — Negro E Lindo ... CD
1971. New Copy .... Around August 1, 2013
A seminal set from Jorge Ben – one that mixes samba soul with more baroque arrangements from the legendary Arthur Verocai! The record's got a different feel than some of Jorge's other work – almost a wider vision of music that ties his usual funky style to some of the more ambitious modes being explored by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo at the time – expressed here in some larger instrumental passages that shade the tunes lightly, while still letting Jorge step out strongly on vocals and the usual mix of tight percussion and raspy guitar. Titles include "Que Maravilha", "Rita Jeep", "Comanche", "Porque E Proibido Pisa Na Grama", "Cassius Marcelo Clay", "Palomaris", "Maria Domingas", and "Negro E Lindo".

Walter Wanderley — Batucada ... CD
1967. New Copy .... Around June 19, 2013
One of our favorite Walter Wanderley albums ever – and a record that moves past the more familiar bossa trio style used on his hits for Verve, into groovier new territory with added players who include Dom Um Romao on drums and Marcos Valle on guitar! And not only is the lineup expanded, but the styles are too – as Wanderley moves away from the straighter bossa and samba jazz of his roots, into the world of more unusual, more complicated rhythms that were showing up in the Brazilian scene at the end of the 60s. Marcos Valle's contribution is felt strongly here – as the album includes a fantastic instrumental take on his classic "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (aka "Os Grilos") – plus other Valle compositions that include "Ainda Mais Lindo", "Batucada", and "E Preciso Cantar". Other tracks include "Wave", "So What's New", and "O Barquinho".

Milestone, 1986. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
We never get enough of Jose Roberto Bertrami's vocoded vocal melodies! Sparkling Brazilian fusion, from the prolific Azymuth, with laid back grooves and light melodies, but not "lite" jazz. One of their more mellow outings, at most these tracks might approach mid-tempo, with a beautiful spaciousness throughout. Eight tracks in all, including "Tu Mi Delirio", "Broken Key", "If You'd Like To Know", Marcos Valle's "Pygmalion", the title track and "Samba Da Barra".
(Cover has a cutout notch.)

new Deodato — First Cuckoo ... LP
MCA, 1975. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries! The vibe here is a bit tighter than before, but in a way that makes many numbers even funkier – played by small combos on all tunes, with players that include Hubert Laws, Steve Gadd, John Tropea, and other early 70s fusion heavyweights – all jamming with Deodato's great work on electric piano and clavinet! There's a great variety of material here, but as usual with D, even familiar tunes get really transformed – in this case into soulful fusion numbers with a sound that we never would have expected! Titles include "Caravan", "Funk Yourself", "Crabwalk", "First Cuckoo", and versions of Marcos Valle's "Adam's Hotel" and Led Zep's "Black Dog"!
(Cover has a bit waviness on the front.)

new Various — Story of Bossa Nova ... CD
Hemisphere, 2000. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the full story of Bossa Nova (for that, we might suggest the Trip To Brazil CD) – but a good compilation of rare tracks from the EMI/Odeon catalog, home to some of the best work ever recorded in Brazil! The set's got more than a few hits, but it also features a number of tunes that we've not had easy luck finding on CD – and at this price, the 20-track set's a great little set of bossa tunes whatever way you slice it! Titles include "Voce" by Milton Banana, "Samba De Verao" by Marcos Valle, "Corcovado" by Joyce with Gilson Peranzzetta, "Fotografia" by Sylvia Telles, "Copacabana" by Nana Caymmi, "Se Todas Fossem Iguais A Voce" by Lucio Alves, "O Barquinho" by Pery Riberio, "A Ra" by Joao Donato, "Vivo Sonhando" by Marcos Valle, "Ao Amigo Tom" by Doris Monteiro, "Meditacao" by Luiz Eca & Astor, "Amor Em Paz" by Dick Farney & Claudette Soares, "Samba De Uma Nota So" by Walter Wanderley, "Chega De Saudade" by Lelia Pinheiro, and "A Felicidade" by Agostinho Dos Santos.

new Sergio Ricardo — Arrebentacao (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Equipe/Discobertas (Brazil), 1971. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from Sergio Ricardo – a Brazilian artist we barely know at all, but who really won us over with this incredible album from the early 70s! There's a complicated vibe to the record right from the start – rich arrangements by Theo Barros that lie somewhere in a space between the Forma Records work of Jose Mauro and some of Marcos Valle's most inventive styles of the time – inventive, yet never too lofty – and bringing in some rootsier elements as the set moves on – all a perfect accompaniment to Ricardo's great vocals! At points, the record has a mix of folksy and sophisticated that almost reminds us of Geraldo Vandre – but at other times, there's a spacious quality that's almost more in the territory of Edu Lobo or Milton Nascimento. Titles include "Asuencia De Voce", "Labirinto", "Arrebentacao", "Conversacao De Paz", "Canto Do Amor Armado", "Bezerro De Ouro", and "Mundo Velho Sem Porteira". CD features 7 bonus tracks too – including "200 Milhas", "Amazonas", "Berimbau", "Improviso Tema 200 Milhas", and "Voce Nao Sabe Quem Sou Eu".

new Arthur Verocai — Arthur Verocai ... CD
Luv N' Haight, 1972. New Copy .... $9.99 15.98 Out Of Stock
Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela".

new Yesterdays New Quintet — Sound Directions – The Funky Side Of Life ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
A fresh serving of genius from Madlib – served up here in yet another manifestation of the Yesterday's New Quintet combo! Sound Directions have a groove that's quite similar to YNQ, but which focuses a bit more on the skittish percussion of Otis Jackson and "Sloppy" Joe Johnson – a live but spacey approach to rhythm, and one that often has the drums recorded in this gritty way that's nice and crunchy – and which is a perfect "bottom" to the tighter horns and electric keyboards of the set! Madlib's got help from guest players who vary from track to track – fleshing out his unique musical vision that includes new takes on Billy Brooks' "40 Days", Marcos Valle's "Wanda Vidal", Oliver Sain's "On The Hill", Lesiman's "Play Car", and David Axelrod's "A Divine Image" – as well as the original tunes "Theme For Ivory Black", Directions", and "Dice Game". Great stuff all around – with a groove that's as wild as Madlib's trip into the Blue Note vaults!

new Various — Break N' Bossa – Chapter 5 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2002. New Copy 2CD .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
The 5th volume in this great series is bigger than ever! Back when volume 1 first came out, the idea of modern bossa dancefloor tunes was a strange concept – now, thanks to the work of the Schema crew, in releases like this one, the groove is here to stay – and strongly! The set offers a 13 track overview of the best of recent years – mostly groups from Europe, and all firmly in the Schema Records style. Most tunes are remixed versions, and titles include "Mastered The Art (Jet Sounds rmx)" by Greyboy, "On Line" by Marcos Valle, "O Preguicoso" by Intuit, "Salsin" by Amalgamation Of Soundz, "Penso Ascoltando" by Mondomo, "Meu Samba (Nicola Conte's bossa ahead rmx)" by Eli Goulart & Banda Do Mato, "Puutarhassa (Milk Snickars ext version)" by Pekka Streng, "Good Morning As Usual (Senor Coconut rmx)" by Snooze, "Existentialism (Milano bossa mix)" by The Dining Rooms, "In The Mood For Bossa (alt)" by S-Tone Inc, "Dance Naked Under Palmtrees" by Mo Horizons, and "Honesty" by Soulstance. new Airto — Touching You, Touching Me ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
One of Airto's most polished records, and an album that we've really grown to love over the years! There's a pretty strong modern soul/R&B component to the album – but at the core, there's still a strong feeling for Brazilian rhythms, and the record's got a wonderfully warm Brazilian fusion component. Marcos Valle arranged many of the tracks with Airto, and the record's similar to some of his excellent R&B-ish work from the early 80s, particularly the stuff he did after working with Leon Ware. Great players and singers on the sessions, too – including George Duke, Herb Alpert, Flora Purim and The Sweet Inspirations. Tracks include "Heartbeat", "Amajour", "Partido Alto", "Open Space", "Tempos Atras", and "And Then We Touched The Sky".

new Jorge Ben — Negro E Lindo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $38.99 Out Of Stock
Titles include "Que Maravilha", "Rita Jeep", "Comanche", "Porque E Proibido Pisa Na Grama", "Cassius Marcelo Clay", "Palomaris", "Maria Domingas", and "Negro E Lindo".

new Jorge Ben — Salve Simpatia (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Som Livre/Bomba (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
Late 70s funky soul from Jorge Ben – not as totally all-out funky as his classic work from earlier in the decade, but still pretty darn nice! The tracks bounce along with a tight samba soul approach that's built very much on Jorge's earlier experiments – handled with a bit more modern soul on the arrangements, but in a way that only makes the grooves come across more directly – in ways that are a bit like that of some other Brazilian artists who shifted so soul at the time, including Marcos Valle. Titles include "Salve Simpatia", "Ive Brussel", "Waldomiro Pena", "Adelita", "Occulatus Abis", and "Menina Crioula".

new Egberto Gismonti — Egberto Gismonti (1973) (aka Arvore) ... CD
Odeon/Bomba (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $38.99 Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds from Egberto Gismonti – a record that's unlike anything else we can think of – and quite different than any of Gismonti's later, better-known records! There's still some of Egberto's inventive acoustic guitar in the mix – but the instrumentation really opens up far past just that element – a beautiful blend of voice, strings, Fender Rhodes, and more – wrapped up with a sense of majesty and creativity that we'd rank right up there with the most inspiring work from Marcos Valle or Hermeto Pascoal from the time! And the record's got a bit of both – the modernism of Hermeto, mixed with the personal warmth of Marcos – yet is clearly Gismonti's very own, very individual expression as well. Titles include the massive cut "Salvador" – plus "Luzes Da Ribalta", "Variacoes Sobre Um Tema De Leo Brouwer", "Encontro No Bar", "Adagio", and "Memoria E Fado".

Looking for funky Brazilian grooves? You'd have a hard time doing better than this tasty little set – 20 slices of rare soul, funk, and jazzy tunes from the Brazilian scene of the 70s – all hand-picked by Patrick "Da Lata" Forge! The set's a tremendous introduction to the wealth of great music from this time – and brings together a number of cuts that have crossed over big on the global groove scene inspired by Forge and Gilles Peterson, plus a number of other tracks that are lesser-known but equally great as the rest!
