Manfredo FestBrazilian Dorian Dream ... LP
T&M/Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
A sublime little set – quite possibly the greatest album ever from Brazilian keyboardist Manfredo Fest! Manfredo first cut his teeth on the bossa scene of the 60s – but by the time of this rare indie session, he'd moved up to the US – and was working with sweet keyboards to really electrify his groove! The record's a wonderful blend of 70s Brazilian fusion modes and just a dash of American soul – and in addition to Manfredo's wonderful work on Fender Rhodes, the set also has these brilliant vocals from Roberta Davis – a singer who works wordlessly, using her voice as an instrument in this really cool way – sliding along with the grooves, and making the album sound unlike anything else we can think of. The overall feel is a bit like Joao Donato's excellent Quem E Quem album – and titles include "Jungle Cat", "Facing East", "Who Needs It", and "Brazilian Dorian Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Os Sambeatles (Manfredo Fest)Os Sambeatles ... CD
Fermata/Braz Bossa Roots (Brazil), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bossa nova take on The Beatles – served up with plenty of great keyboard work from the legendary Manfredo Fest! Fest is well known to bossa fans for his killer combo sides of the 60s – and although this album's a much more obscure effort, it follows in a very similar vein – instrumental and strongly jazz-based, with piano or organ as the main solo instrument, soaring over the top of some tightly crackling rhythms! The tunes are all Lennon/McCartney compositions – played with lots of inventive touches that really take them from their roots, and open them up as new groovers filled with keyboard improvisation. Titles include "All My Loving", "Help", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Michelle", "Hard Day's Night", and "Ticket To Ride". CD

✨✧ Ken NordineStare With Your Ears ... LP
Snail, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ken Nordine's trippiest albums! This was released on Ken's own Snail Records label in the late 70's, and it's got a very different feel than his classic Word Jazz LPs on Dot. There's still a lot of cool processed vocals, and weird production in which Ken talks with himself in many different voices, but there's also some added instrumentation, and even a few tracks that you could call "songs". The musicians are an odd batch of players from the Chicago scene, including Odell Brown and Manfredo Fest, and Kitty Haywood also sings vocals on some of the album. Titles include "Smelts", "Scratch", "Angel's Lament", "Island", "Mister Blister", and "Cracks In the Ceiling". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing with Diskwerks stamp. Includes the folded lyric insert. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ VariousFrom The Archive – Compiled By Volcov ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The archive here appears to be Volcov's own record collection – but that's A-OK with us, because he's got some wonderfully groovy, wonderfully soulful, wonderfully under-discovered records he wants to share with us! The set's got a wicked blend of obscure tracks from decades back, and some contemporary cuts that share a similar vibe – music that's in a really special place between soul, jazz, and fusion – often with a cosmic vibe that gives the whole collection a very righteous sound! Liner notes are by Patrick Forge, who points out how obscure most of these tracks are, and what a special collection this is – and we definitely agree with his words, as most of these tracks are new to us, too. Titles include "Keep The Same Old Feeling" by Hot Quisine, "Do The Right Thing" by JOB, "Go (Chez Damien classic mix)" by The Urban Cru, "The Sound Of The Memory Of Many Living People" by Are & Be, "Arigo (Volcov edit)" by Manfredo Fest, "Turning On To Me" by Oneness Of Juju, "Footprints On The Sand (Shannon Harris Urbanicity reinterpretation)" by Chanan Hanspal, "Sophisticated Disco (Volcov edit)" by O'Donel Levy, "Simon's Melody" by The Antilles, "Part 4" by Shakazulu, and "Sun On My Back" by Bembe Segue. ✨✧ VariousInfluences Vol 2 – A Selection Of Drum N Bass, House, Brazilian, & Disco – Compiled By DJ Marky ... CD
BBE (UK), 2017. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Rare club cuts from a few different generations – all brought together here in a really wonderful collection! The set's supposed to tip us off to the influences on the music of DJ Marky – but even if you don't care about him at all, you'll find plenty here to love – as the package shows the way that great funky tracks can span the globe and space of decades – yet still manage to come together with a really unified feel! Tracks start in the club underground of the late 70s, then move through points overseas to incorporate some great modes that work together wonderfully – in a set of rare grooves that includes "Got To Get Your Love" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, "Futebol De Bar" by Manuel Azevedo Quartet, "Jungle Kitten" by Manfredo Fest, "Cosa Nostra" by Pasito All Stars, "Meant Love" by Influx Datum, "Dream Come True (Joey Negro reality mix)" by Brand New Heavies, "This Is Acid (K&T dance mix)" by Maurice, "Last Night Changed It All" by Esther Williams, and "Truly One (rmx part 1)" by Origin Unknown. 2CD version is overflowing with great music – 18 mixed tracks by Marky on the first disc, and 12 unmixed tracks on the second disc!
