Agitation Free — Malesch ... LP
Music Factory/Made In Germany (Germany), 1972. New Copy .... $15.99
A sublime debut from German prog outfit Agitation Free – a set that's definitely free of agitation, and one that spins out in these long, winding lines with lots of Eastern influences! There's a bit of drone to some of the grooves, but never in a sleepy or sloppy sort of way – and in addition to familiar prog instrumentation on guitar, keyboards, and percussion, there's also some added ethnic elements as well, and even a bit of steel guitar, zither, and live tape work too! Tracks are longish and nicely organic, and although there's some vocals on the record the whole thing's much more of an exploratory instrumental affair – very much like some of the best early work on Brain. Titles include "You Play For Us Today", "Sahara City", "Ala Tul", "Pulse", "Malesch", and "Rucksturz".

Manuel Goettsching — Inventions For Electric Guitar ... CD
OMM/Made In Germany (Germany), 1974. New Copy .... $14.99 17.99
Truth in album titles from Manuel Goettsching – inventive soundscapes from the Ash Ra Tempel founder – played entirely on electric guitar, though it's all about hypnotic layering and effects. It's amazing stuff, evolving guitar notes manipulated into the studio. "Echo Waves" is a 17+ minute, uber-hypnotic piece that's another case of material living up to the title, one that reminds us a bit of some of Tangerine Dream's soundtrack work of a decade later. "Quasarsphere" is atmospheric and spacey, a shorter piece. "Pluralis" is the 20+ minute epic closer, very much akin to "Echo Waves".

Weather Report — Live In Berlin 1975 (CD/DVD) ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1975. New Copy CD & DVD .... $19.99 24.95
A massive mid 70s live set from Weather Report – a record that has the group stretching out even more than on their classic studio albums! There's an undercurrent of darkness here that we really love – an edge that always makes us feel like things are about to go off the rails, or maybe take one of the more avant Miles electric turns – even though the group really keep things tight throughout, and manage to swing searing sounds into soaring solos with effortless ease! Lineup includes Joe Zawinul on Fender Rhodes (a noisy one at that!), Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano sax, Alphonso Johnson on bass, Chester Thompson on drums, and Alex Acuna on percussion – and titles include "Mysterious Traveller", "Freezing Fire", "Scarlet Woman", and the 20 minute long "Badia/Boogie Woogie Waltz".

Weather Report — Live In Offenbach 1978 ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1978. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 17.95
A really sweet side of Weather Report – a rare live performance from 1978, featuring a tight quartet version of the group! Peter Erskine's drums do a great job of propelling the music from Joe Zawinul's keyboards, Jaco Pastorius' bass, and Wayne Shorter's tenor and soprano sax – and the rhythms almost feel like they dominate more than usual for a Weather Report album – giving an especially great chance to hear the magic of Jaco at work! As with other live performances by the group in the 70s, there's some nice free play at points that really pushes things past the studio albums – and this double-length set features titles that include "Black Market", "Scarlet Woman", "Young & Fine", "River People", "A Remark You Made", "In A Silent Way", "Waterfall", "Fred & Jack", "Badia", "Elegant People", "Birdland", and a few medley tracks!

new Ash Ra Tempel — Schwingungen ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1972. New Copy .... $14.99 17.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best early albums from Ash Ra Tempel! Here they bring vocals into to the mix for the first time, though it's still a spacious blend of slow-building atmosphere and spare dynamics that evolve into more feverish and intense maelstroms. The vocals of John L are another instrument, really – with gruff screams and moodier howls that echo the instrumentation impressively. The drums and percussion and incredible, with sax, organ, guitar and electronics. Work that bridges earlier psych to later experimental rock pretty fearlessly! Includes the "Light And Darkness" suite of " A) Light: Look At Your Sun" and "B) Darkness: Flowers Must Die" (originally spanning a side), plus the Schwingungen side "A) Suche" and "B) Liebe".

new Weather Report — Live In Cologne 1983 ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1983. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 17.95 Out Of Stock
A soaring set from Weather Report – captured here in an early 80s lineup that features great keyboards from Joe Zawinul and sublime saxophone from Wayne Shorter! The tunes are nice and long, and bristle with that power the quintet had at this point – a well-earned tightness that really made concerts some of their best moments – propelled by rhythms that really let the main solos fly free, especially in a live setting like this. Victor Bailey is on bass, Omar Hakim on drums, and Jose Rossy on percussion – and the set features loads of long tracks – including "Where The Moon Goes", "Fast City", "D Flat Waltz", "Two Lines", "Plaza Real", "Procession", and a great long medley of classics.

new Agitation Free — Second ... LP
Music Factory/Made In Germany (Germany), 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 17.99 Out Of Stock
A nicely trippy effort from Berlin prog maestros Agitation Free – a blend of spacey keys, intricate guitar work, and rewarding sounds that draw as much from hypnotic melodies as they do from spare dissonance! The band was experimenting with a mellotron this time out – tripping everything out just a little bit more and adding a bit of a groovier overall sound. Titles include "First Communication", "Dialogue And Random", "Laila Pt 1", "Laila Pt 2", "In The Silence Of The Morning Sunrise", the 2-part suite "A Quiet Walk" and "Haunted Island".

new Ash Ra Tempel — Ash Ra Tempel ... CD
OMM/Made In Germany (Germany), 1971. New Copy .... $14.99 17.99 Out Of Stock
A landmark set from the German prog scene – the first amazing utterance of Ash Ra Tempel, and a standard-setting album that few others could ever hope to match! The sound here builds beautifully – coming out of abstract, noisy territory, then finding shape as the record goes on – a perfect blend between the instruments and new studio modes that really help the textures and tones come to the forefront! The group features Klaus Schulze on drums and electronics, Manuel Gotsching on guitar, and Hartmut Enke on bass – and Conny Plank worked the knobs, to help the whole thing come together like magic! Each song takes up a side of the record – and titles include "Amboss" and "Traummaschine".
(New remastering – much better than the previous CD version!)

Gene Ammons — Soulful Moods Of Gene Ammons/Nice & Cool ... CD
Moodsville/Universal (Germany), 1961/1962. New Copy .... $13.99
A pair of soulful gems from tenorist Gene Ammons – back to back on a single CD! The Soulful Moods is beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together in that Ammons-made gentle-blown way – using just a few notes to send the message out with a powerful punch, without ever overdoing things the way that a few of his tenor contemporaries might be tempted to do! The group's a great fit too – with the lovely Patti Brown on piano, plus bass from George Duvivier and bass from Ed Shaughnessy – and titles include "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", "Street Of Dreams", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". The second album is Nice & Cool, but not in a west coast way – and instead a set that's got Gene Ammons working some wonderfully soulful magic on a set of gentle ballads! The set's got a brilliant late nite sort of feel – one of those tenor albums that seems to sound even better in the space past midnight – as the warm glow from Ammons' horn seems to sparkle even more strongly in the dark – standing out with that stark, spare approach that always makes his ballad work so special – and unlike just about anyone else. The group here is nice and cool too – with Richard Wyands on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and JC Heard on drums – and titles include "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I Remember You", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Till There Was You".

Inge Brandenburg — Sing Inge Sing ... CD
Silver Spot (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s/1971. New Copy .... $26.99
A tremendous collection of work from Inge Brandenburg – a German jazz singer who never made it big on our side of the Atlantic, but who cut some excellent English language recordings in the 50s and 60s! The package features a great range of tunes from Inge – pulled together to accompany a recent documentary that's helped folks rediscover her music – with work from a variety of different labels, and an especially strong focus on tracks from the late 50s and early 60s! The style is tight jazz throughout – spurred on by players who include Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Joki Freund on tenor, and Herb Geller on alto sax – plus many others who make the small group recordings on the record really shine. Titles include "The Lonesome Road", "Body & Soul", "All Of Me", "Love For Sale", "Temptation", "Secret Love", "The Man I Love", "The Face Of Love", "Skylark", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", and "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien".,

new Don Byas, Bud Powell, Jimmy Woode, & Others — Americans In Europe Volume 2 ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good- Gatefold .... $6.99
If you read these pages often enough, you'll know that we're big fans of recordings made by American expatriot players while living in Europe during the 60's. The European rhythm sections often bring out new elements of their playing, and the interaction with European soloists hits modes that we sometimes don't hear on American recordings by the same artists. This series of live recordings from Germany in 1963 brings together an array of players that includes Idrees Sulieman, Jimmy Woode, Joe Harris, Don Byas, Bud Powell, and Champion Jack Dupree. The best material is by a group that features Byas, Powell, Woode, and Harris – playing long renditions of two jazz standards, "All The Things You Are" and "I Remember Clifford", in a performance that takes up all of side two.
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has two small stereo stickers.)

Jack DeJohnette — Special Edition (Special Edition/Tin Can Alley/Inflation Blues/Album Album) (4CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $31.99 35.98
A quadruple-header of a set – four great albums together in one cool box! First up is the first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet". On Tin Can Alley, the great Chico Freeman really shines with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody". Inflation Blues is a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! Titles include "Ebony", "Inflation Blues", "Slowdown", and "The Islands". Album Album is a record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. Some of the tunes are wonderfully vivid in approach – and titles include "Festival", "Third World Anthem", "Zoot Suite", "Ahmad The Terrible", and "New Orleans Strut".

Maria Joao e Mario Laginha — Lobos, Raposas e Coiotes ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1999. New Copy .... $5.99
Wonderful work from Portuguese singer Maria Joao – a vocalist who's worked mostly in Europe, but who's also made some great contributions to the world of Brazilian music over the years! The backings here are more adventurous than some of Joao's straighter jazz sessions – with large orchestrations by Mario Laginha, performed by the NDR Radio Philharmonic – often with a mix of modern tones alongside the warmer elements we always expect from Maria's music. The blend is sublime – and Joao's voice is even more pretty and fragile than we remember it – and it floats over the top of these arrangements in a beautiful way. Titles include a nice remake of "Asa Branca", plus Edu Lobo's "Beatriz", and the originals "Filhotes", "Viarias Dancas", "Chao", and "Uma Casa Com Gente".

Charles Lloyd — Quartets (Fish Out Of Water/Notes From Big Sur/All My Relations/Call/Canto) (5CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), Late 80s/1990s. New Copy 5 CDs .... $39.99 49.98
Beautiful music from Charles Lloyd – a great package that brings together all the important Norwegian recordings the tenorist made for ECM in the 90s – music that really helped renew interest in this legendary player! The style here is wonderful – laidback and flowing, in a mode that almost returns Lloyd to that very strong sound he had with Atlantic Records in the late 60s – perhaps a bit less righteous here, but still very powerful and spiritual – at a level that also even seems to bring a new sort of life to that of his bandmates too! The players are a pretty tight lineup throughout – with Bobo Stenson on piano on all tracks, plus Palle Danielsson or Anders Jormin on bass, and either Billy Hart, Ralph Peterson, and Jon Christensen on drums. The set features five full albums, plus a booklet of notes – the titles Fish Out Of Water, Notes From Big Sur, The Call, All My Relations, and Canto.

Charlie Mariano — Tango Para Charlie ... CD
Enja (Germany), 2000. New Copy .... $13.99 15.99
Quite an interesting project from reedman Charlie Mariano – a record that shows that his search for new creative settings never ends! As you'd guess from the title, there's a bit of a tango inspiration to the record, but in a format that's very different than most tango jazz – as the album features Charlie on alto and flute, in duets with Quique Sinesi, who plays a variety of acoustic guitars, including 7 string Spanish, charango, and piccolo guitar. This spare sound is quite different than regular tango modes – and the spareness allows Mariano to solo freely – in that wonderful range of tones that's always made his work surprisingly soulful, no matter what the setting. Titles include "Tango Para Charlie", "If Only", "Zephyr", "The Lady", and "Faluseando".

Paul Motian — Paul Motian (Conception Vessel/Tribute/Dance/Le Voyage/Psalm/It Should Have Happened) (6CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 5 CDs .... $39.99 49.98
Music that really made the career of drummer Paul Motian – work that firmly established his power as a leader in the 70s, and showed the world that he had a huge range of music to offer beyond his initial fame with Bill Evans! Motian works here both on percussion and a standard drum kit – often in ways that intertwine rhythmic and melodic elements, in the freer structures that ECM helped unleash in the 70s – modes that often show a spiritual side to Paul's music that would have been unexpected a decade before – wrapped up in the company of some fresh young talents from the underground! Players on the dates include Keith Jarrett on piano, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Becky Friend on flute, Charles Brackeen on tenor and soprano sax, Joe Lovano on tenor, Bill Frisell on guitar, Billy Drewes on alto and tenor, David Izenzon and Charlie Haden on bass, and Sam Brown on guitar – and the 6 CD set features the full albums Conception Vessel, Tribute, Dance, Le Voyage, Psalm, and It Should've Happened A Long Time Ago.

Smash — Smash ... LP
Source, 1979. Very Good+ .... $14.99
Early work from Smash – a group that included the core of DeBarge before they went onto bigger fame! Oddly, the album was first issued in Germany in 1977, but made its US debut here on Source – about time, too, as the record's a nice blend of funky tunes and the sweeter pop soul you'd expect from DeBarge. The funky tunes are actually pretty nice ensemble numbers – grooving in a harder edge than you'd think for the period, especially as so many groups were noodling a bit too much on the bass. Titles include "Pall Mall Groove", "Funk Freak", "Where's the Party", "Your Love", "Don't Waste My Time", and "Anyway".

Barney Wilen — Moshi Too – Unreleased Tapes Recorded In Africa 1969 to 1970 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy .... $22.99
Amazing music from the legendary Barney Wilen – previously unreleased African recordings, done around the same time as his classic Moshi album! Although Wilen was best known as a hardbop giant in both his later and early years, the late 60s also marked a period of really rich experimentation – when Barney, like some of his other contemporaries, was really trying to break out of any traditional formats for jazz – and really take chances with new musical hybrids! In this case, Wilen's blowing with a whole host of different musicians from various African scenes – especially Zanzibar – mixing his own incredible tenor and other reeds with regional percussion, unusual instrumentation, vocals, and even some trippier electric touches too – all served up in a blend of music and sounds that's as much an ethnographic project as it is a conventional jazz album. This special set features 80 minutes of previously-unreleased tracks that never made it onto the first Moshi album – which was issued by Saravah Records in the early 70s – rare tracks that have come from Wilen's private archives, and which are every bit as amazing as the music on the original album. Titles include "Black Locomotive", "Moshi Too","Fullys In The Bush", "Serenade For Africa", "Barka De Sala", "Fete A Tam II", "Leave Before The Gospel", "Zombizar Reloaded", "Bumba Ciagalo", and "Kira Burundi".

Various — Now's The Time – Deep German Jazz Grooves 1956 to 1965 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $19.99
The cream of modern jazz in Germany during the postwar years – the kind of amazing music that never made it over to our side of the Atlantic, but which was really marking some great jazz development on the European scene of the time! As Germany picked itself up from the ashes of the war, it also experienced an amazing cultural rebirth – in film, literature, and especially music – music like this, which bursts forth with a freshness and urgency that still sounds as creatively compelling here in the 21st Century as it did back at the end of the 50s! The vibe is very much a precursor to better-known sounds from the Saba/MPS scene, and many of these artists later recorded for that label too – but here, the work is nicely early, and pretty darn great – a selection of titles that includes "Domicile" by Joki Freund & Albert Mangelsdorff, "Minority" by Michael Naura, "Lover Man" by Inge Brandenberg, "Night Bounce" by Attila Zoller, "Ease It" by Albert Mangelsdorff, "Madam B" by Die Deutschen All Stars, "Mike's Blues" by Michael Naura, and "Meeting At The Barberina" by Horst Jankowski & Rolf Kuhn.

new Thirsty Moon — Thirsty Moon ... LP
Brain (Germany), 1972. Used Gatefold .... $59.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little record – one that's filled with extended jamming from a German combo on electric piano, saxes, guitars, and plenty of percussion! The style is in the best jazz rock mode of the early 70s – often served up with vocals, but usually with an equal focus on the instrumental stylings of the group – which are tight, almost funky, and filled with modal lines and spiraling grooves! At times, the guitars dominate a bit more – pushing the record more towards familiar prog modes – but overall the sound is filled with creative little touches, made even better by inventive production from Conny Plank! Titles include "Morning Sun", "Love Me", "Big City", "Yellow Sunshine", and "Rooms Behind Your Mind".

An amazing package – filled with loads of rare gems – all vintage vinyl nuggets from the enormous collection of The Cramps! new Petrowsky/Bauer/Gumpert/Sommer — Synopsis ... CD
Amiga (Germany), 1974. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Bold sounds from this German quartet – a group who certainly deliver one of the most striking avant jazz sessions on the legendary Amiga label! The set's got a free frenzy that's right up there with the 70s best from FMP – played by musicians who often made key appearances on that label too – including Ernst Ludwig Petrowsky on saxes and flute, Conrad Bauer on trombone, Ulrich Gumpert on piano, and Gunter Sommer on drums and percussion! The album takes off with a machine gun-like energy at the start – a real blast of sound that shows all the revolutionary power of this generation of German jazz – but then as things progress, the players explore some wonderful tones and textures that reflect a more contemplative mode as well – still very groundbreaking, but in a more subtle way. Titles include "Traumtanzer", "Quartett Diskurs", "Holzland", "Kommit Ihr G'Spielen", and "Post Aus Vogelsang".

Vampi Soul (Spain), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold .... $25.99 Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the Spanish scene of the 60s and early 70s – way more than just a batch of obscure jazz cuts, and instead a true testament to this very vibrant musical community! The package brings together some really special tracks from Spanish labels like Edigsa, Ensayo, Hispavox, and others – and really shows that in Spain at the time, there was musical growth that was every bit as strong as in better-known scenes in Germany, France, and Italy – a really rich step forward from American inspiration of the postwar years – into a world of freshly inventive rhythms, really imaginative solos, and some key local touches that really made the music sparkle! Not all players here are of Spanish origin, as the set also shows the key crossroads the scene was offering at the time – a wealth of wonderful hardbop, soul jazz, and modal numbers that include "El Cant Dels Ocells" by Catalonia Jazz Quartet, "Movimiento" by Lou Bennett, "Psique" by Juan Carlos Calderon, "Tema Per Alicia" by Jazz Group, "Asteriscs" by Nits De Jazz Al Jamboree, "Bosnia Calling" by Dusko Goykovich, "Israel" by Modern Jazz Sextet, "Rememberance To Madrid" by Elia Fleta, "Marcha De Los Dioses" by Tino Contreras, and "Laberinto (2nd part)" by Vlady Bas.

new Don Ellis — Soaring ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1973. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
A well-titled album from trumpeter Don Ellis – as the set soars to the skies from the very first note! The album's got a dynamic energy that almost beats Don's American work of the time – lots of funky rhythms, and a cool MPS groove that shows the label's strong 70s legacy of larger group jazz recordings! Like other MPS dates of the time, there's a nice mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation in the lineup – bass and guitar that kick the rhythms up strongly, plus keyboards and electrified strings that bring in their own unique sounds. Milcho Leviev handles the keys on the session – and titles are a fresh batch of numbers that include "Sidonie", "Image Of Maria", "Sladka Pitka", "Go Back Home", "Whiplash", "The Devil Made Me Write This Piece", and "Invincible".

new Mitchbal & Larry Williams — Jack The House (Frankie Knuckles rmx, voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Mitchbal/Still Music (Germany), 1988. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
A great rare tune from the Windy City – and another entry in the great run of jackin cuts to come from Chicago! The main side here features a great Frankie Knuckles remix – one that has all the classic soulful undercurrents that made Knuckles such a key link between disco and house – and the mixes on the flipside have more of that "burst" of sound that was coming into the scene a lot in the late 80s – almost a Todd Terry vibe at times.

new Mop Mop — Isle Of Magic (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Agogo (Germany), 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.99 Out Of Stock
Some of the deepest grooves we've ever heard from Mop Mop – still in the cool, jazzy mode of previous records – but a lot more organic too, with great percussion that really helps shape the sound of the set! As before, there's some excellent work on vibes and keyboards – but many of the rhythms also have a tribal vibe that seems reflected in the album's cover image – a groove that's made even better by live instrumentation that includes trombone from Fred Wesley, and some well-chosen vocal moments that include guest work from Anthony Joseph on three tracks. Titles include "Kamakumba", "Heritage", "Phantom Of The Panther", "Run Around", "The Golden Bamboo", "Damballah", "Mojomamy", and "Afro Jojo (parts 1 & 2)".
(Heavy vinyl pressing – with bonus download of album!)

new Various — Feten – Rare Jazz Recordings From Spain 1961 to 1974 ... CD

new Beanfield — Seek ... LP
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used 2LP .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
Another masterful set from Beanfield – an even better album than their great Human Patterns, if you can believe that – and one with much more of an adventurous soul feel than we've heard from the boys before! The fractured electronics and broken beats feel that the group made sound so melodious in their previous work is still here, but Beanfield takes a huge step here as far as cohesive songwriting goes! Four of the album's 11 tracks feature vocals by Ernesto – the opener "Chosen", "Someone Like You", "Close To You" and "Kiss" and it's those cuts that give the album it's smooth and soulful overall feel. It's not that beats don't bump – they still skip and pulse along on the soul-based tunes, but it's all laid down with an amazing tunefulness that really kind of caught us off guard! Two of the other tracks feature vocals by Bajka, and those have a stronger club groove, but still go down very sweetly. Another great one on Compost! Other tracks include "Mr. Park", "Vertigowheel", "Welcome" featuring vocals by Marzenka (one of the more pounding club tunes in the set), "Cargo" and more.

Jutta Hipp — Jutta Hipp – The German Recordings 1952 to 1955 – Lost Tapes (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Jazz Haus (Germany), Early 50s. New Copy .... $25.99 29.99
Rare work from female pianist Jutta Hipp – an artist who's probably known to most for her Blue Note sessions of the 50s, but who's heard here on some German recordings from younger years! Most of the material is live, but well-recorded – and even at this point, Hipp's touch on the piano is sublime – very fluid, yet focused and hard-swinging too – at a level that made her one of the best hardbop pianists on the European scene of the postwar years. Other players on these tracks include Hans Koller on tenor on four tracks, Joki Freund on tenor on two more – plus a bit of guitar from Atilla Zoller and some trombone from Albert Mangelsdorff. Titles include "Serpentinen", "You Go To My Head", "Sound Koller", "Daily Double", "Gone With The Wind", "Erroll's Bounce", "Blues After Hours", and "What Is This Thing Called Love".
