Bloodstone — Bloodstone ... CD
London/Collectors Choice, 1972. New Copy .... $5.99 12.98
The wild first album from Bloodstone – a much trippier affair than some of the group's later work, as you might guess from the image on the cover! There's a really heavy vibe going on with some of the tracks here – almost an echo of psychedelic soul from the Norman Whitfield camp, with perhaps some of the fuzzy guitars of the Westbound scene too – all a very different change from the sweeter harmonies Bloodstone would drop later in the 70s still a bit rough around the edges here, but in a great way! The album's got plenty of appeal for fans of heavy funk, and there's a definite righteous undercurrent to the music – as you'll hear on tracks like "This Thing Is Heavy", "Dumb Dude", "Lady Of The Night", "Friendship", and "Take These Chains".

new Noel Harrison — Noel Harrison ... LP
London, 1966. Very Good .... $1.99
A charming batch of mid 60s popular tunes done in loungey, sort of boozy arrangements in some places and uptempo mod in others from Noel Harrison – who went on to have a few hits as well as a successful acting career – tackling Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, and more with a really swinging aplomb! Moddish touches abound, with some rocking soul & pop backing in the rolling drums, trippy organ washes, horn punctuation and girl backing vocals! Really cheeky stuff and good fun! "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", "God Bless The Child", "She's A Woman", "Mr Tamborine Man", "A Young Girl (Of Sixteen)", "All Blues", "Like Stranger", "Tomorrow Is My Turn" and more.

Syl Johnson — Diamond In The Rough ... LP
Hi Records/London, 1974. Very Good+ .... $24.99
The great Syl Johnson – doing his thing for Hi Records on a record that's more shiny diamond than it is rough – his second album for the label and a truly underappreciated gem from the Chi soul great! Diamond In The Rough is a much sweeter set of tunes than Syl's Chicago work on Twinight, with warmer production by southern soul guru Willie Mitchell to keep his sound much more in the Memphis soul camp – but still a nice album of bluesy stoked sweetness, and proof that Syl was one of the better talents on the Hi label. Titles include "Keeping Down Confusion", "Let Yourself Go", "Could I Be Falling In Love", "Stuck In Chicago", and "I Hear The Love Chimes", "Please, Don't Give Up On Me" and "Diamond In The Rough".
(Cover has wrinkled corners on the spine.)

Kimiko Kasai — Just Friends ... CD
London/King (Japan), 1970. New Copy .... $19.99
Lovely work from Kimiko Kasai – easily one of the best female jazz vocalists on the Japanese scene in the 70s! Kimiko's got a wonderfully deep range – an ability to dip into lower notes when needed, but not in any sort of gimmicky way – just this full-voiced quality that makes her interpretation of American standards come across with a really rich groove! Backing is by a piano trio, and Kasai's right out front in the arrangements – on titles that include "The Good Life", "Get Out Of Town", "Bewitched", "Just In Time", "Wild Is The Wind", and "Sunny".

Dudley Moore — Dudley Moore Trio ... LP
London, 1969. Very Good+ .... $29.99
One of the many very groovy albums cut by pianist/comedian/actor Dudley Moore. Unlike his films, the album's filled with a great range of emotion and talent – and the set features some stunning original by Dud, played with a nice lively groove by his classic trio. Includes the rolling groover "Amalgam", a tasty jazz dance number, plus "Bags Of Chris", "Chimes", and "120 Plus Optional Magic Exploding Cadence".

Larry Page Orchestra — Erotic Soul ... LP
London, 1977. Very Good .... $5.99
British disco tunes from Larry Page – kind of in a mode that's like work by Cecil Holmes & The Soulful Sounds from the mid 70s, a mixture of blacksploitation funk and smoother Barry White-styled tunes. The overall sound of the album's higher than you'd expect – and there's plenty of nice numbers with a satin soul disco finish! Titles include "Rampage", "I'm Hooked On You", "Erotic Soul", "Chasing", "Body Movement", and "Touch".

Richard Pine & Co — Cosmos ... CD
London/King (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $19.99
An overlooked gem from the Japanese scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a great mix of funky and groovy touches, all of which come across like better-known work from the Japanese Columbia label! Reedman Richard Pine leads the group on soprano sax, tenor, alto, and flute – and other instrumentation includes guitar, drums, and bass – plus funky piano and electone – all used in ways that have a groovy/funky sort of vibe overall – somewhere near the coolest late 60s projects on Verve or Impulse, with maybe a bit of Cadet Records thrown in for good measure. We don't know Pine at all, but he's got the soulful edge of a young Tom Scott – and titles include "Left Right", "Cosmos", "Summertime", "Windy", "30 60 90", and "El Condor Pasa".

Roland Shaw — James Bond In Action/Themes For Secret Agents ... CD
London/Poker, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $13.99
Spy themes galore – a full CD of famous James Bond tunes, paired with a whole bonus CD of additional work from Brit maestro Roland Shaw! Back in the 60s, Shaw recorded a host of great spy-styled sets for Decca – two albums of work with Bond on the cover and in the title, and two more with additional spy and secret agent themes! The best of that work's packaged together here, in an ultra-cool 2CD set that features 37 tracks in all – a good number of which were penned by John Barry for original Bond films, then redone by Roland in ways that are swinging 60s, with lots of mod instrumental moments – including some great guitar amidst all the horns. Titles include "Twisting With James", "You Only Live Twice", "Chateau Fight", "Pussy Galore's Flying Circus", "Thunderball", "Dawn Raid On Fort Knox", "Dr No's Fantasy", "James Bond Theme", "Diamonds Are Forever", "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Bond Below Disco Volante", "The Saint", "I Spy", "The Avengers", "Theme From The Man From Uncle", "Casino Royale", and "Mission Impossible".

Roland Shaw — Themes For Secret Agents ... LP
London/Phase 4, Mid 60s. Very Good- Gatefold .... $4.99
Easily one of the best of the Bond-alike albums of "spy" grooves from the 60s – handled by Brit easy maestro Roland Shaw, with a sound that's in keeping with the best soundtrack work of the time! Shaw's got a jazzy mode here that really opens up some of these tunes – letting the horns and piano come into play a bit more on a few numbers, and differing the songs a lot from their more famous versions used in the films. The package has a great kitschy cover, plus a cool montage of film scenes on the back – and titles include "The Saint", "The Ipcress File", "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold", "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Man From Uncle", "Our Man Flint", and "I Spy".

Yma Sumac — Miracles (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
London/Omni (Australia), 1971. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Fantastic! This is Yma Sumac's rock album from the early 70s – and it's got a wild sound that's totally different from any of her work at Capitol! The record includes lots of electric instrumentation, and Yma's voice moves from the exotic to the psychedelic, as she sings along with some great organ/guitar small group backing produced by Les Baxter. Sounds weird at first, but it's great, and almost a bit funky! Titles include "Zebra", "El Condor Pasa", "Tree Of Life", "Flame Tree", "Looke Around", and "Let Me Hear You". This Omni CD version includes 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Savage Rock" (plus an alternate version) and "Parade".

Caterina Valente — Sweet Beat ... LP
London, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A surprisingly great little album from Caterina Valente – a singer we usually don't like much at all! The album's a late 60s effort that has Caterina singing new versions of American pop tunes from the 60s – a range of very groovy numbers all done with a swinging jazz approach by arranger Heinz Kiessling! Kiessling nicely mixes styles together for the album – using the bouncing electric bass that was such a key part of the German easy sound in the 60s, but also topping off the tunes with a slightly hipper range of instruments – including some great electric guitar and keyboards that create a nicely trippy feel from time to time. Rhythms are all a bit odd and slightly offbeat – further enforcing the unusual qualities of the album – and even best of all, Caterina's accented English delivery of the lyrics makes for an especially great style! Titles include "Music To Watch Girls By", "We Can Work It Out", "Waterloo Sunset", "Terrible Feeling", "I Dig Rock & Roll Music", "Happy Together", "San Francisco", "Fascinating Rhythm", and "You've Got Your Troubles".

Margaret Whiting — Maggie Isn't Margaret Anymore/Pop Country (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
London/Real Gone, 1967/1968. New Copy .... $16.99 17.98
A pair of London Records albums from Margaret Whiting – back to back on a single CD, with bonus tracks too! Maggie Isn't Margaret Anymore is cool crossover pop from Whiting – a late 60s album that still draws strongly on her roots in jazz, but which also has Maggie trying on some younger styles too! The set isn't all 60s pop overall, but there's definitely a nice choice of tracks that goes way past the usual Margaret Whiting bag – although often arranged in ways that still hold more strongly to the sentimental echoes of Whiting's past. Titles include "This Is My Song", "Somethin Stupid", "If This Is Goodbye", "Because","Only Love Can Break A Heart", and "Just Like A Man". Pop Country is exactly what's promised in the album's title – a set of popular country numbers, sung by Margaret Whiting in a style that carries plenty of echoes of Nashville! The style is often soft and dreamy – with Whiting's blue-tinged vocals moving gently over backings that are usually given a slight bit of electric bass, just to step things along slowly. The approach works surprisingly well – a real winner for Margaret – and titles include "I Love You So Much It Hurts", "Release Me", "I Hate To See Me Go", "Am I Losing You", "You Don't Know Me", and "Gentle On My Mind". CD also features four totally groovy cuts – unreleased tracks that include "I'm Losin My Mind", "The Heart Of A Sailor", "Boys Fall In Love", and "Believe In Me".

new Margaret Whiting — Wheel Of Hurt (with bonus tracks) ... CD
London/Real Gone, 1966. New Copy .... $16.99 17.98
An unusual 60s comeback for singer Margaret Whiting – and a set that firmly established her as both a country singer, and a singer of jazz! The set's got full backings from Arnold Goland – often done in a way that carries a slight undercurrent of Nashville – not full-blown country, but the kind of country pop that you might hear from a singer like Kay Starr crossing over big. Other cuts echo some of the better Brit girl modes of the time – such as work by Petula Clark – and these are maybe some of the best, and really seem to open up the best vocal side of Whiting. Titles include "The Wheel Of Hurt", "The World Inside Your Arms", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Time After Time", and "Nothing Lasts Forever". CD features 13 more bonus tracks from singles – including "Where Was I", "Love's The Only Answer", "At The Edge Of The Ocean", "Love Has A Way", "Life Goes On", "I'll Tell Him Today", and "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" – plus two German tracks as well!

new John Mayall's Blues Breakers — Hard Road ... CD
Deram/London, 1967. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer album from one of the most legendary versions of John Mayall's Blues Breakers – a quartet that features drummer Aynsley Dunbar, bassist John McVie, and lead guitarist Peter Green – who's also singing a fair bit on the album as well! The style here is tighter and more focused than before – showing a bit more of a rockish bent, especially on the guitars – but still strongly drenched in American R&B traditions, served up in a way that never waters down the sound for a mainstream audience. While other UK artists were taking American roots and softening them up for the charts, Mayall only seemed to deepen his commitment to more authentic representation of the styles – really only taking a bit more liberties with the strength and length of guitar parts. As before, there's a bit of reed work here that's especially nice – served up by UK jazzers Ray Warleigh, John Almond, and Alan Skidmore – and titles include "A Hard Road", "It's Over", "The Stumble", "Dust My Blues", "There's Always Work", "The Same Way", "The Supernatural", and "Living Alone".

new Neco — Samba E Violao ... CD
London/Think (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Samba and guitar – served up in a really warm and wonderful blend from Neco – a player who never made it big on our shores, but who can play the acoustic guitar in the same best 60s modes as Baden Powell! The session is nice and spare – mostly just light percussion, plus an occasional flute – all dancing in a sweet little groove, and setting up a perfect sort of pattern for Neco's inventive solos on guitar – more than rhythmic enough on their own to swing even without any backings! There's a nice sort of understatement here, but a good deal of complexity too – especially when Neco surprises us by bringing in some jazz-based changes at just the right moments. Titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Samba Do Aviao", "Ole Ola", "Nao Tenho Lagrimas", "Apelo", and "Agora E Onza".

A wonderful album from the young Irish singer/songwriter who went onto become one of the brightest lights in 70s pop! new Heraldo Do Monte — O Violao Do Heraldo Monte ... CD
London/Think (Japan), 1970. New Copy .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
A great guitar session from late 60s Brazil – bossa at its core, but with some other groovy touches too! Guitarist Heraldo Do Monte plays light acoustic, in a style that's right up there with Luiz Bonfa or Baden Powell – but the overall setting of the album also gives a nod towards some of the more advanced changes going on in Brazilian instrumental music at the time – the first inkling of some of the Blue Brazil touches from EMI/Odeon, with a deeper sophistication in some of the arrangements than just straight bossa. A few moments are straight ahead, mixed with others that have a nice degree of darkness – and titles include "Teletema", "My Cherie Amour", "Recit De Cassard", "Que Maravilha", "Casa Forte", and "Moanin".

new Afro Funk — Body Music ... LP
Kabana/Secret Stash, 1973. Very Good+ (reissue).... $13.99
They're not kidding with the name of this group – because the set's a masterpiece of 70s Afro Funk – totally great all the way through! The combo has African origins, but they're recording here in London – which makes for a really wonderful criss-crossing of cultural modes – the same sort of heavy, dark-tinged groups you'd hear from Cymande or Demon Fuzz – both of whom are a great comparison to the sound of this group! Bass is very heavy in the mix – not dubby, but really rumbling right from the start of each tune – and helping to set up the complicated percussion patterns, fuzzy guitar bits, and nicely trippy vocals – all of which are recorded in just the right way to make the sum of the elements sound like way more than the parts. Titles include "Afro Funk", "Tei Egwu", "Hot Love", "Farewell To Ibusa", and "Try & Try".

David Axelrod — Songs Of Experience ... LP
Capitol, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
One of the greatest albums ever by studio genius David Axelrod! The album's one of Axelrod's first on his own – cut for Capitol Records at a time when he was working with some of the label's biggest selling soul acts – like Cannonball Adderley and Lou Rawls – turning their already-successful sounds into super-hit material by adding some nice funky touches, and excellent baroque production. This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements, and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". Reissued with the original gatefold cover, and everything!

Azymuth — Partido Novo ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. New Copy .... $9.99
Warm, wonderful, and incredibly far-reaching in scope – possibly the most ambitious record cut by Azymuth in recent years – a perfect blend of jazzy fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and some of the London broken beat culture that the group have come into contact with through their label, Far Out. The sound is clean and spare – a dance between percussion and keyboards that reminds us how great Azymuth can sound when they keep things simple. A few cuts have vocals, but the overall approach is instrumental – and the record features production and programming by Roc Hunter, and was recorded by Kirk Degiorgio. Titles include "Tempo Classico", "Em Marica", "Partido Novo", "Sudade Do Doutor", "Nome Dele E Joan", "Algoado Doce", and "Rede De Espera". CD has 12 tracks in all.

Vicki Benet — Sing To Me Of Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty (Japan), 1960. New Copy .... $26.99
A much more solidly American album than some of Vicki Benet's other efforts of the time – which were usually more French-styled than this one! This time around, Vicki's got a great breathy style that's right up there with Julie London on Liberty – a late 50s sexiness that perfectly matches her ice blond look on the cover, and her slinky slinky dress! Arrangements are relatively gentle – strings, but never too lush – and Vicki hangs mostly in a ballad mode that's perfect for the breathiness of the recording. Titles include "Our Very Own", "The Boy Next Door", "Love Me", "There's A Small Hotel", "A Shade Of Blue", and "Heartstring Melody".

Big Boss Man — Winner ... CD
Blow Up (UK), 2005. Used .... $6.99
It's been a few years since we last heard from Big Boss Man – but it's been well worth the wait, as these guys know how to cook up a mod groove better than just about anyone else! Winner's got a sound that takes us back to the swinginest days of London in the 60s – Hammond wailing over some snapping mod rhythms – sometimes instrumental, sometimes topped off by slightly psychedelic vocals that expand the sound even more. In the past few years, these guys have really grown a heck of a lot – and have managed to pick up some Latin influences that sit nicely alongside their straighter inspirations from jazz, soul, R&B, and 60s mod rock – making for an album of many surprises, and an expansive sound that's way more than just a quick retro-styled groove! Titles include "Kelvin Stardust", "Fall In Fall Out", "Complicated Lady", "Reach Out", "Oh My Gawd", "Boogaloo", "Fever Special", "Everybody Boogaloo", "The Hawk", and "Got It So Bad".

Blo — Chapters & Phases – The Complete Albums 1973 to 1975 (Chapter One/Phase II) ... CD
Rev-Ola (UK), 1973/1975. New Copy .... $13.99
One of the hippest groups of the Nigerian scene of the 70s – presented here in two classic albums, back to back on a single CD! Chapter One is a landmark set of African grooves – very unusual in both conception and execution – with a feel that's unlike anything we can think of! There's definitely a rock influence in the set, but the music isn't rock at all – it's a very dark, almost dubby groove at points – and a bit more straightforwardly funk at others – almost a post-colonial style that clearly comes from a London influence, given to the group by a previous association with Ginger Baker. Rhythms are quite tight, and the bass is as strong as the drums – mixed up nicely with riffing guitar, and moody vocals that color the whole thing nicely. Titles include "Preacherman", "Time To Face The Sun", "We Are Out Together", "Chant To Mother Earth", "Miss Sagitt", "Beware", and "We Gonna Have A Party". Phase II is a critical next step for the group – music that's even deeper than before, but a bit funkier too! There's clearly some touches here of other African funk of the time – especially in the way the guitar parts groove with the rhythms – although those heavy Blo basslines from before are still nicely in place, as are some of the fuzzier production elements too. Titles include "Whole Lot Of Sh*t", "Atide", "Blo", "It's Gonna Be A Good Day", "Native Doctor", and "Don't Take Her Away From Me".

new Graham Bond — Wade In The Water – Classics, Origins, & Oddities (4CD set) ... CD
Repertoire (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $48.99
An amazing collection of work from the legendary Graham Bond – a 60s Hammond player who was incredibly important to the London scene during the best mod years of the decade! Bond was way more than just a jazz musician – and like George Fame, Zoot Money, and a few of his other contemporaries – he had a way of mixing together jazz and soul with a strong touch of blues – almost a new British version of soul jazz, similar to the way that some of the bigger English rock groups were drawing from American R&B! Graham sings on most tracks – with these raspy vocals that are incredibly charming, and downright soulful – and in addition to his own work on organ, instrumentation features lots of pre-Cream work from Ginger Baker on drums and Jack Bruce on bass – plus plenty of tenor from Dick Heckstall-Smith too. If you dig the mod work of Georgie Fame, you'll find plenty to love here too – but Bond also really helps point the way towards more progressive jazz-rock experiments of the future – although this set features mostly tracks from 1966 and before, without any of Graham's later trippier music. The 4CD package is the best collection we've ever seen of Bond's music from these years – and includes rare singles, unreleased cuts, and even some side projects with Ernest Ranglin and Duffy Power too. 98 tracks in all, with a great booklet as well – and titles that include "Cabbage Greens", "Harmonica", "Early In The Morning", "Tammy", "Honey Bee", "Long Tall Shorty", "Soul Tango", "Down In The Valley", "Waltz For A Pig", "Like A Baby", "Please Don't Say", "Walking In The Park", "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf", "Dick's Instrumental", and lots lots more.

Chris Bowden — Time Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. Used .... $8.99
Very, very dope LP by this London studio funk jazz genius. While half the scene's been messing around with blunted beats and weak stuff, Chris Bowden's composed a suite that has the sound of a great blacksploitation soundtrack or a classic album on Curtom. Lots of heavy grooves weaving in and out of deep string arrangements, with hard sax solos cutting in from time to time. A monster piece of wax, and perfect for kickin' back in the wee hours.

Brute Force — Brute Force ... LP
Embryo, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The one and only album by this righteous funky combo from Ohio! Although Brute Force were an American group of the late 60s, they've got a sound that brings in traces of the African rhythms that were bubbling under at the time – similar to some of the best London groups of the post-colonial years, like Cymande, Demon Fuzz, or Asiko. There's often a jagged and jazzy style on the bottom of the grooves, topped with brighter horn flourishes, and combined with a vocal approach that has some slight folksy touches – very hip, progressive, and as righteous as you'd expect from the cover! Sonny Sharrock sits in on some tracks, and the titles include "Some Kind Of Approval", "Doubt", "Ye Le Wa", "Do It Right Now", "The Deacon", and "Monster".

new Harry Carney/Harold Ashby & Paul Gonsalves — Rock Me Gently/Two From Duke ... CD
Vocalion (UK), 1960/1961. New Copy .... $16.99
Two rare albums from these Duke Ellington sidemen – both recorded in New York with production from Stanley Dance! Rock Me Gently offers up some rare work as a leader from baritone saxophonist Harry Carney – working here in a swinging smaller group of players from the larger Ellington ensemble – including Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Willie Cook and Ray Nance on trumpets, Booty Wood on trombone, and Rollins Griffith on piano. The set's got a very different feel than the usual Ellingtonian outing like this – as it features songs and arrangements from Kenny Graham – the inventive British leader of the 50s who really knew how to work some fresh sounds from players like these. There's definitely a London modern vibe going on – and tracks include "Mabulala", "Five O'Clock Drag", "Tree Of Hope", "Blues For Blokes", "Baby Blue", and "Rock Me Gently". Two From Duke focuses on the solo talents of two key tenorists – Harold Ashby and Paul Gonsalves, sometimes heard together, sometimes on tunes that just feature Ashby. The set's got a wonderfully warm, laidback small combo feel – very different than the usual Ellington-ish setting you'd usually hear the players on their own – and the groups feature piano from either Jimmy Jones or Sir Charles Thompson, and some tracks also have a bit of trumpet from Ray Nance. Titles include "Backstairs", "Jeep's Blues", "Swallowing The Blues", "My Buddy", and "Oh Shucks".

Chubby Checker — Chequered (with bonus track) ... CD
Sunbeam (UK), 1971. New Copy .... $16.99
Forget everything you know about Chubby Checker – because this album's unlike any of his 60s hits – and instead shows the singer as a hipper, funkier, more soulful talent than before! As you might guess from the spelling in the title, the set's got overseas origins – and really only circulated in the European market of the early 70s – and unfortunately never helped Checker regain his fame over here on our shores. There's some nice tripped-out elements that really work well with the groove – a bit of psych mixed in with funk and deep soul – all kind of that hip London brew that has all the separate elements coming together wonderfully. Titles include "Stoned In The Bathroom", "How Does It Feel", "My Mind", "He Died", "Goodbye Victoria", "Love Tunnel", and "No Need To Get So Heavy". CD features the bonus track "Gypsy".

Freddy Cole — One More Love Song/Right From The Heart ... CD
Decca/Vocalion (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy .... $16.99
Two rare European records from Freddy Cole – best known to most of us in the US as a jazz singer! One More Love Song is surprisingly soulful set from Freddy – quite different than some of the straighter jazz vocals he's cut over the years! This rare gem was recorded in The Netherlands in the mid 70s – and features backings from Jerry Van Rooyen and Tony Noite, both of whom mix jazzy inflections with fuller orchestrations – helping to bring Cole's rich background into a whole new light! Freddy's voice still has that wonderful trademark rasp – familiar to, yet quite different than brother Nat – and the use of some smoother soul modes makes for a really great contrast. Titles include "One More Love Song", "I Loved You", "I Need You So", "Still Wanna Be With You", "Isn't She Lovely", and "Here Is Where Your Love Belongs". Right From The Heart has Freddy Cole taking on a mix of adult ballads and some groovier numbers – set to arrangements by John Gally, Hennie Bekker, and Steve Gray – and recorded in London with a nicely mature feel. There's a bit of polish to the production, especially on the more upbeat cuts – but the mellower numbers still have Cole singing in a great old school mode. Titles include "The Girl From The Piano Bar", "To Be With You", "Teach Me Tonight", "Summer Love", "Somewhere Down The Line", and "Right From The Start".

new Ornette Coleman — Music Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs .... $16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more.

Corduroy — Out Of Here ... CD
Acid Jazz/Hollywood, 1994. Used .... $0.99
A harder-edged set than before from Corduroy – a record that's still heavily steeped in the 60s territory of previous releases, but one with a bit more of a mod feel overall! There's lots of heavy Hammond and guitar in the mix, and the vocals have a warm appeal too – kind of a blue-eyed soul take on mod London modes – served up here with a sound that's arguably tighter and more soulful than lots of current work of this nature! Corduroy was always a group that never fully got its due – and with records like this under their belt, they were easily one of the hippest acts on the Acid Jazz imprint at the time. new Corduroy — Very Yeah – The Director's Cut – Complete Compositions 1992 to 1996 (Dad Man Cat/High Havoc/Out Of Here/Quattro) (4CD set) ... CD
Acid Jazz/Cherry Red (UK), 1990s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $24.99
Four classic albums by this hip UK group – all with rare bonus tracks too! First up is the wonderful Dad Man Cat – our favorite record by one of the best funk records to ever come out of England! On this great debut album, Corduroy are a tight funky combo, with an organ and clavinet mod sound that still holds up damn well over the years. Their songwriting is great, and the groove on the set push way past the stock acid jazz riffing of the early 90s. Best example of this is "Skirt Alert", a cut that begins with an amazing drum break, then grooves into a Brazilian-inflected funk number, in the manner of Earth Wind & Fire's use of the idiom. Other tracks include "Chowdown", "How To Steal The World", "Electric Soup", "Money Is", and "Six Plus One". CD also features six bonus demo tracks! High Havoc is a real shift for Corduroy, who are opening their sound a lot here from earlier releases – showing that the group was way more than just one of London's many retro funk combos at the beginning of the 90s. The set includes the sublime track "Something In My Eye", a breezy bossa number that would almost put Brasil 66 to shame, and which we can guarantee will have you hitting the repeat button on your CD player again and again! Other tracks include "The Corduroy Orgasm Club", "Breakfast In Love", "Nobody Move", "Very Yeah", "Clearing Up Music", "Lovely Lonely & Loaded", and "The Frighteners". CD features 9 more bonus tracks – some previously unreleased! Next is Out Of Here – a record that's still heavily steeped in the 60s territory of previous releases, but one with a bit more of a mod feel overall! There's lots of heavy Hammond and guitar in the mix, and the vocals have a warm appeal too – kind of a blue-eyed soul take on mod London modes – served up here with a sound that's arguably tighter and more soulful than lots of current work of this nature! CD features 7 more bonus tracks – a number of unissued demos! Last up is Quattro – Live In Japan 1994 – a great little live set from Corduroy – recorded late in their career, but with the stripped down funky feel of their best early work! The album was recorded in Japan – but the groove is pure London jazz funk all the way, with a tight mix of keyboards and riffing guitars, electrically grooving in a very soulful way. Includes versions of "Skirt Alert", "Something In My Eye", "Mini", "Money is", "London, England", "Electric Soup", "E Type", "The Frighteners", and "Chow Down".

new Dantalion's Chariot — Chariot Rising (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $31.99
An amazing step sideways for London's Zoot Money – a move from mod to psych, with a trippy quality that's quite different from his jazzy sound a few years before! The group's got legendary fame – not just for the shift in styles by Zoot, but also for the fact that it features key work from a young Andy Summers – later of The Police – who works here with some great tones on guitar, and plenty of fresh ideas in all the songs he penned on the record! Money's vocals are wonderful – almost as if Georgie Fame were singing on a psych album – which is as unusual and compelling as you might think. These sessions were recorded in the late 60s, but mostly unissued at the time – but really rank with the best of the early Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers generation – with titles that include "Coffee Song", "Madman Running Through The Fields", "This Island", "High Flying Bird", "Four Firemen", "Soma (parts 1 & 2)".

Dave Davani — Fused! – Swinging Soul Sound Of Dave Davani ... CD
Parlophone/Big Beat (UK), 1965. New Copy .... $11.99
Mod mod 60s jazz – and 20 tight-as-can-be instrumentals from London's Dave Davani combo! Dave's a Hammond player with a great mix of soul jazz and R&B in his grooves – very much the best sort of instrumental work you might expect from London in the swinging 60s – a great blend of American influences and UK mod styles. The rest of the group includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus a bit of vocals and Latin percussion from Beryl Wayne. The groove here is clearly a precursor to the James Taylor Quartet, and the overall sound is better than some of the more famous groups from the time – such as the combos of Brian Auger or Graham Bond. The set features tracks from Dave's Parlophone album, a few other singles, and even 4 previously unissued tracks from the same time – with titles that inlcude "Big Bossa Man", "Working Out", "Funky Mama", "Sack O Woe", "Boot Leg", "Harlem Waltz", and "Pig Foots".

Francesco De Masi — Concerto Per Pistola Solista ... CD
CAM/Beat (Italy), 1970. New Copy .... $16.99
A wonderfully complicated soundtrack – one with many moods, and some really great work overall! The set starts out a bit strangely – pushing the "concerto" aspect with some overly-dramatic classically-styled themes – but as the work unfolds, a range of different influences come into play – including some jazzier themes, some sparer instrumental ones, and a few really nice lighter and groovy numbers that almost have a love comedy sort of approach – one that's much more in keeping with the 1970 date of the film! Instrumentation on these gets nicely electrified, and titles include "Tema Di Barbara", "Seduzione E Incubo", "Sweet Barbara", "Thorpe Overture", "Isabel & Tom", "Cercando Un Fantasma", "90 Miles To London", "Good Night Anthony", and "Georgy & Mamie". CD features much better art than the previous version – and a total of 11 more bonus tracks – which makes for a mighty sweet package!

Drumtalk — Airbourne EP (with download) ... LP
Soundway (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
One of the most contemporary sets we've ever heard on the Soundway label – a record that's much more in line with the London base of the label than most of its other global projects! Drumtalk definitely lives up to his name here – working on some hard, raw grooves that are heavy on percussion patterns – not really house or club, but with echoes of the sharper sides of Detroit and London. Most beats are pretty bassy, and mixed with some pretty bass-heavy sounds too – and titles include "Airbourne", "Strata", "Petro", and "Realm".

European Jazz Quartet — New Jazz From The Old World (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Pulse/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $24.99
A beautiful combination of piano and vibes – performed here by a hip German combo from the postwar years! The quartet features piano from Wolfgang Lauth and vibes from Fritz Hartshuh – the latter of whom plays with a nicely hard-edged, chromatic sound – a great link between some of the first jazz players to pick up the instrument and some of the key modernists to emerge later in the 60s. Lauth's piano work is great, and the record is a wonderful early example of his standout skills on the instrument – one that also features bass from Wolfgang Wagner and drums from Joe Hackbarth. The album's recorded with a bit of an echoey tone, which brings out some of the darker elements in the music – and the set includes a few really great original compositions, plus more familiar standards. Titles include "La Cave", "Miniature", "Darn That Dream", "Visions Of Cathy", "London Bridge Is Not Falling Down", "Near You It Was Always So Beautiful", and "Everything Happens To Me". (Note: there appears to be a slight imperfection on track 3 – causing a musical dropout for a brief moment.)

A brilliant criss-crossing of group from this cool trans-global group – a set recorded in London, but with roots in Venezuela, LA, and Ghana – served up with a sound that's even greater than the sum of its parts! Malcolm Catto recorded the record – and really helps bring a funky energy to the record, by working alongside lead studio help from Jack Yglesias of The Heliocentrics – pushing here into a space that's even more offbeat than the grooves of that group! There's loads of rich acoustic instrumentation – especially percussion – and Mulatu joins the record at one spot, furthering the exotic appeal of the set. Some tracks have an almost ethnographic vibes, while others are a bit more contemporary – although the overall sound is more than worthy of placement on the Soundway label. Titles incude "Arena", "Cumbacutiri", "Fly Through The Lightning To Speak With The Sun", "El Negrero", "Escape To The Palenque", "Manicero", "La Familia", and "Speak To The Spirit Of The Sea".

Here's a group who definitely live up to their name – a damn funky 70s act from Nigeria, with a tight, righteous groove that's completely outta sight! The Funkees have an approach that's a lot more compact than Fela, and a lot more soulful than some of their more tripped-out contemporaries – and they also had some recording experience in London, which possibly gave them an even hipper focus – like some of the great post-colonial combos that were brewing up sounds on the British scene of the 70s! This wonderful package brings together the best of the group's work – their rare early Nigerian 45s, and key cuts from the UK albums – all with the incredible Soundway ear for a groove – meaning that The Funkees sound pretty darn funky all the way through. Titles include "Mimbo", "Dancing Time", "Break Through", "303", "Life", "Ole", "Akpankoro", "Abraka", "Acid Rock", "Slipping Into Darkness", "Point Of No Return", and "Dancing In The Nude".

France Gall — Baby Pop ... CD
Polygram (France), 1966. New Copy .... $8.99
No baby pop here, as France Gall is all-woman throughout – one of the best of the French female pop singers of the mid 60s, working here with an upbeat, groovy sound throughout! Backings are by the great Alain Gouraguer, who gives the record a tightly jerking kind of feel – a sound that's the Paris contribution to the same sort of mod grooves that were coming out of the London scene at the time. The album's filled with classics by Gall, all sung in a sweet voice that's a great contrast to the music – wonderful stuff throughout, with titles that include "Baby Pop", "Cet Air La", "L'Amerique", "Mon Bateau De Nuit", and "Deux Oiseaux".
