Les BaxterConfetti ... LP
Capitol, 1958. Very Good+ ... $3.99 5.99
A groovy Les Baxter album from the pre-exotica years – a set that showcases all the lively, jaunty styles that Les brought to his initial instrumental run on Capitol Records! The mix of sounds is as colorful as the title might imply – some Latin modes, wordless vocal passages, and plenty of instrumental tricks – even a bit of whistling at times, which comes across in this mighty cool way – as Baxter and crew turn out their own version of famous European instrumentals, zinged up in this groovy late 50s California mode! Titles include "Love Begins", "La Panse", "Love Theme From Farewell To Arms", "The Lonely Whistler", "Heartstring Melody", and "Ricordante Marcellino". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Les BaxterSacred Idol ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A real standout set from the end of Les Baxter's run at Capitol Records – originally scored for a film that was never released, but a great set of tracks that more than stands strongly on its own! The theme here is a Mexican/Latin American one – explored by Baxter with his trademark blend of larger orchestrations and lighter exotica touches – often swirling around in an extremely evocative mode that makes us wish the film had been issued to the public, and at a few key moments even hinting at the funkier modes that would follow on some of Les' later work for other labels. Titles include "Aqueducts", "Gardens Of The Moon", "Pyramid Of The Sun", "Temple Of Gold", and "Procession Of The Princes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original rainbow label stereo pressing. Includes the Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo inner sleeve, with some aging a bit of pen. Cover has light aging, some ringwear in back, and small seam splits.)

Les Baxter & 101 StringsLatin Holiday (aka Que Mango) ... LP
Alshire, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
A repackaged version of the album Que Mango – a later album, but one that still features Les doing some great Latiny bits – heading up the 101 Strings ensemble, for a sweeping and groovy kind of sound! The whole album's very similar to some of Les' Capitol work from the early 60s, but has a slightly more modern twist – including the use of electric bass underneath the arrangements, which creates a really nice gently loping groove! One of Les' best – despite the late date – and with tracks that include "Jungle Montuno", "Que Mango", "Bocha Chica", "Affair In Aruba", and "Tropicando". Very groovy, baby! LP, Vinyl record album
(Quad-Spectrum pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ Les Baxter/Mike Curb/The 13th PowerWild In The Streets ... LP
Tower, 1968. Very Good- Gatefold ... $1.99
Hilarious! This is the soundtrack to a goofy late 60s shocker film about the time when hippies and young folks would take over America. Les Baxter handled the musical score for the film, but the real treat is the schlocky rock tracks – written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, with arrangements by Mike Curb in that fuzzy Tower/AIP mode! The lyrics are hysterical, but also oddly catchy, even though they're trying to make fun of 60s rock. Titles include "Psychedelic Senate", "Fourteen Or Fight", "Wild In The Streets", "Sally LeRoy", and "Free Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, spot of clear tape on the top & bottom seams.)

✨✧ Les BaxterMaster Of The World ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A real oddity – a soundtrack on Vee Jay records, the label best known for their groundbreaking work in soul, blues, and jazz. Even stranger, the score is for a schlocky Vincent Price film, based on a Jules Verne story – written by Les Baxter, in the flowery style he used for some of his late 50s, non-exotic work at Capitol. The album is performed by the 100 Men, directed by Cal Carter of Vee Jay – and titles include "Topage", "Flight Concerto", "Philadelphia", "Drifting Clouds", and "Over The Rocks". Nice painted cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(1978 Varese pressing – sealed!)

✨✧ Les BaxterPorts Of Pleasure ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A dreamy exploration of south sea ideals from the great Les Baxter – a set that's got a more lightly drifting quality than some of his more percussive exotica albums, and which is awash in dreamy soundscapes penned by Les himself! The orchestrations are large and bold throughout – mixing strings and woodwinds almost in a soundtrack-y mode – but always with the light sense of interplay that makes Baxter's work so great. Titles include "Monkey Dance Of Bali", "Pearls Of Ceylon", "Tahiti: A Summer Night At Sea", "Hong Kong Cable Car", "Tramp Steamer To Singapore", "Spice Islands Sea Birds", "Harem Silks From Bombay", "Bangkok Cockfight", and "Sidewalk Cafes Of Saigon". ✨✧ Les BaxterPrimitive & The Passionate ... LP
Reprise, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Les Baxter's greatest records – and one of his rarest too, one of the few he cut for Reprise after leaving Capitol! The record is a continuation of Baxter's exotica sound of the late 50s – played with some great help that includes Larry Bunker on vibes and percussion, Clare Fischer on celeste and piano, and Leo Acosta on gourd! The sweetly dreamy sound of Fischer is an especially nice addition – and often creates a gentle flow to tunes that have a more driving approach overall – but it's Les' genius with the arrangements that make the album sparkle most of all, because even familiar tunes are transformed by his exotica magic! Titles include "Slave Ship", "Congale", "Via Veneto", "Night With Cleopatra", "Peking Tiger", and "Fiesta Brava". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Les BaxterQuiet Village ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Although Martin Denny had the big hit with "Quiet Village", the tune was written by Les Baxter – a fact that's stated clearly on the cover of this one, which says "Les Baxter's Original Quiet Village"! The album's a nice collection of some of Baxter's best exotica work for Capitol – including a few titles from some of the more hard to find albums in his catalog. Titles include "Sea Nymph", "Busy Port", "Temple Of Gold", "Tahiti: A Summer Night At Sea", "Gardens Of The Moon", "Simba", "Singing Sea Shells", and of course, "Quiet Village". ✨✧ Les BaxterRitual Of The Savage ... LP
Capitol, 1952. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of exotica! Ritual Of The Savage is one of those must-have albums from the 50s – a super-huge record upon its initial release, and an album that pushed the genre of exotica far further than most others at the time! Before this record, most attempts at exotica were simple instrumental pop, colored with slight worldly instrumentation – or too-dreamy recordings, putting over a sleepy version of life on the islands. Enter Les Baxter, who had an amazing ear for sounds, rhythms, and arrangements – one that was the first to record this sort of music in a way that was sonically evocative, and could stand on its own without other referents. Instrumentation is often conventional, but used oddly here – and Baxter's original compositions are all pretty darn great – playful without being goofy, and nicely mixing Latin and Pacific rhythms at the bottom. Titles include "Busy Port", "The Ritual", "Coronation", "Jungle Jalopy", and Les' original version of "Quiet Village". Heck, even the cover is gorgeous – with a brilliant blue illustration of some guy putting the moves on a woman amidst spooky tribal relics! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Les BaxterSkins! – Bongo Party With Les Baxter ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very groovy LP of bongo-oriented tracks conducted by Les Baxter for "young America" (or so says the label!) The overall feel is nice and jazzy, and the tracks have a nice snapping bongo sound. Tracks include "Reverberasia", "Bustin the Bongos", "Brazilian Bash", and "Afro-Deesia" – and they all sound as great as the titles might imply. LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A 2LP set, released in the mid 60's as a "Capitol Record Club Exclusive" – and one that compiles some of Baxter's best work for the label. The inside of the cover has some good notes on Baxter's career, and the record contains many nice moments like "Dancing Diamonds", "Lost In Meditation", "Blue Jungle", "Hong Kong Cable Car", "Bustin The Bongos", "Quiet Village", "Enchanted Sea", "Dawn on the City", and "A Distant Star". ✨✧ Les BaxterSpace Escapade ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums by Les Baxter – and one of the best! The record features an excellent batch of "space exotica" tracks, set amidst some very lively arrangements, all packaged in one of the greatest album covers of the 50s! Les' writing and leading are as excellent as always, and the record has a beautiful sound that never gets as soppy as some of the other 50s space-age albums. Tracks include "A Distant Star", "Moonscape", "Mr. Robot", "The Commuter", and "The Other Side Of The Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Les BaxterTamboo! ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album of exotica! Tamboo was cut with Les' orchestra and chorus – and it's a swirling mass of tribal drums, singing strings, and moody voices that would forever change the face of easy listening. Les' compositions are astounding – filled with all the sophistication of a great soundtrack, but simple enough to evoke the fake primitive charm of the album's cover. Every cut is great – and tracks include "Simba", "Oasis of Dakhla", "Mozambique", and "Zambezi". The cover's got a gorgeous blue painting of natives dancing in the background, while a drummer drums in front. LP, Vinyl record album

Les Baxter conducts a set of string-laden ballads with a sweet dreamy feel. Titles include "Dawn On the City", "Rush Hour Romance", "Afternoon Affair", and "Hot Summer Night". Capitol, 1956. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lush romantic reading of Les Baxter's extended suite "La Femme", a bunch of Frenchy sounding compositions designed to fit nicely with Capitol's "Capitol Of the World" series. Pourcel conducts the work in a rich European style, with the usual overblown number of musicians in the orchestra, and a heavy heavy sound that leaves not a second of silence in the entire work. Titles include "Les Cuisses", "La Nuque", "Les Bras", "Les Yeux", and "Les Doigts". LP, Vinyl record album

Martin DennyForbidden Island (2nd cover) ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Martin Denny's music always takes us away to the tropics – and this set is a whole Forbidden Island of exotica tunes! The record features the classic Denny exotica quartet with Augie Colon and Julius Wechter – plus some additional guest players on flute, percussion, and guitar – rounding out things very nicely. The expanded sound works nicely for Denny's style – and the mood incorporates plenty of easy lounge arrangements of the fairly standard instrumentation in the backdrop – broadened wonderfully in the arrangements! It's sort of a blue-eyed tropical feel – one that makes it a cheeky classic! The set includes some good originals like "Goony Birds", "Cobra", "Exotica", and "Primitiva", plus the Les Baxter tunes "Port Au Prince" and "Sim Sim", as well as a perennial exotica fave, "March Of The Siamese Children". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing with deep groove in the foil cover, with splits on the top & bottom seams and some clear tape, with light surface wear & aging.)

Liberty, 1959. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
An undisputed classic in the exotica genre – and the record that yielded Martin Denny his biggest hit! The title track "Quiet Village" was originally written by Les Baxter, but it was Martin Denny's approach that really managed to send the tune over the top – using spare percussion, rhythmic piano, and just the right amount of vibes and bird calls to give the track a really haunting feel. That approach is echoed throughout the set – with shifting instrumentation that includes celeste, bongos, marimbas, and marimbula as well! Titles include "Quiet Village", "Paradise Found", "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic! This is Yma Sumac's rock album from the early 70's – and it's got a wild sound that's totally different from any of her work at Capitol! The record includes lots of electric instrumentation, and Yma's voice moves from the exotic to the psychedelic, as she sings along with some great organ/guitar small group backing produced by Les Baxter. Sounds weird at first, but it's great, and almost a bit funky! Titles include "Zebra", "El Condor Pasa", "Tree Of Life", "Flame Tree", "Looke Around", and "Let Me Hear You". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1950. Very Good ... $9.99
Legendary vocal work from the postwar years – some of the earliest recordings from the enigmatic Yma Sumac – an artist whose records really laid the groundwork for an entire generation of exotica records to come! Sumac's authenticity has been debated over the years – but there's no denying that she's got this incredible vocal range – a many-octave approach that almost makes her sound like a human theremin – as she works with exotic backings from Les Baxter to offer up a take on Peruvian roots, styled towards a 50s bachelor pad listener! Titles include "Xtaby", "Wayra", "Taita Inty", "Monos", and "Tumpa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve ShehanIndigo Dreams ... LP
Kvox/Silent River Runs Deep (Japan), 1995. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Steve Shehan's often a mini musical force unto himself – a percussionist by trade, and one who's worked with many other artists – but who can also open himself up well on a project like this, by layering acoustic and electric elements in an evocative style that might even be thought of as exotica work for a new generation! There's plenty of percussion here that would be right at home on a classic record by Martin Denny or Les Baxter – mixed with some of the 90s advances in keyboard and sampling technology, so that the acoustic and electric elements have a really good balance in the mix, while Shehan goes off searching in all sorts of global directions. Titles include "Southern Attitudes", "Caravan In Kachgar", "Spiritus Cantus", "Indigo Dreams", "Amok", "Tonkinoise", and "Tjuringa". LP, Vinyl record album

ABC/Geffen, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album from Steely Dan, and a really nice chapter in their career – one that's maybe a bit less iconic than the late 70s records, but in a way that really keeps things interesting! There's definitely less jazz and polish than on the later albums – but already, the group are writing the kinds of songs that nobody ever seemed to pen before, and which few other groups could match later – despite the countless legions who tried! The guitars are all nice and strong – that sharp Skunk Baxter edge that helped get the group firmly onto the charts right away – on titles that include their classic singles "Do It Again" and "Reelin In The Years", the oft-showcased "Dirty Work", and other cuts that include "Kings", "Midnite Cruiser", "Only A Fool Would Say That", "Fire In The Hole", "Brooklyn Owes The Charmer Under Me", "Change Of The Guard", and "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again".
