Leon Haywood's best album from the 70s! After working as a keyboardist and sometimes vocalist for a number of years – making some strong and some tentative entries into the soul genre – Leon really exploded with this album, an electric funk classic that gave the world his fantastic "I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You" (a track that had new life years later when Dr Dre sampled it to great fame.) The rest of the record holds up nicely, too – and is a mix of smooth soul and wicked funk, with tracks that include "Consider the Source", "Who You Been Giving It Up To", and "This Feeling's Rated Extra". Classic!

Cali funk revivalists The Incredible Say Whats! pay tribute to a rare late 60s treasure by Leon Haywood's group The Soul Machine – covering both sides of funky 45 from 1968! Each demonstrates real love for the original versions, ably replicating the vibe, without mimicking it – a tricky thing to pull off, but the fresh funky life breathed into these too little heard gems is, well. . .kinda incredible! "Twitchie Feet" is built around a stable, funky drummer and wicked guitar and bass sound, nicely cooking organ and really great use of a solid horn section – that latter element may be even a bit more prominent than the version that inspired it! "Bag Of Goodies" is, natch, another goodie – again with some great use of jazz funk organs, guitar and horns. Recorded in San Francisco with vintage mic & amps, giving it the wholly classic vibe the group was shooting for. Direct hit!

A classic album of bluesy funk – one that features the guitar of Johnny Otis' young son Shuggie, in a slightly tighter setting than he'd been getting on some of Johnny's own LPs! Shuggie here is still very much under the guidance of his dad – working in a mode that really emphasizes the fuzzier side of his guitar, in a style that was clearly an attempt to hook Shuggie up with the Hendrix audience. Not that that's a problem, though – as the record also features some stone funky playing too, as well as organ work by Leon Haywood, sax by Preston Love, and some other great studio work by members of The Crusaders! Tracks include "Hurricane", "Shuggie's Boogie", "Bootie Cooler", "Funky Thithee" and "The Hawks".

Nude women on the front, and some great grooves on the set! The collection is a long-awaited addition to the Mood Mosaic series – one that follows the previous volumes' style of funky grooves, but which also presents some of the cuts in edits that really extend their funkiest elements! The new versions are surprisingly great – hardly muddled with at all – and titles include "For Real (extra long version)" by Flowers, "Closer Closer (edit)" by Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch, "Put Your Foot On The Ground" by Morris Wilson, "Feel The Heat (edit)" by Kathy Baker, "Want A Do Something Freaky To You" by Leon Haywood, "Body Fusion" by Starvue, and "Are You Lonely" by Hipnotic.

Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out!
