Ledisi — Soul Singer – The Revival ... CD
LeSun, 2003. New Copy .... $13.99
An excellent bit of modern soul – very much in the vein of Jill Scott, Laurnea, N'Dambi, or some of the other current underground divas from the US indie soul scene! Ledisi's got a heck of a voice – very rich and mellow, in a style that reminds us a bit of classic work by jazzy soul singers like Jean Carn or Dee Dee Bridgewater, but with more of a bite, and more of a hip hop sensibility. The tracks on this debut set are wonderfully produced – blending together jazzy instrumentation and heavy beats with some warm soul arrangements that are both totally fresh, yet also infused with a classic approach to the music. The record's a treasure, and will be one of the best new soul albums you've bought in recent years! Titles include "Stop Livin In Ya Head", "Hotel", "Groove On", "Free Again", "Papa Loved To Love Me", "I Wantcha Babe", "Groove On", "Get Outta My Kitchen", and "Take Time". This is "revival" version is remixed and remastered – with the bonus tracks "Hold On To Love" featuring Meshel Ndegeocello, and a live version "Soulsinger".

new Maysa Leak — All My Life (UK pressing) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2000. Used .... $3.99 Just Sold Out!
A great modern soul album – and the new release from Maysa Leak, the lovely voice behind some of Incognito's best albums! If you know Incognito, you can guess the sound here – but the overall approach is different, with a lot more emphasis on soul sounds and jazzy arrangements, all produced by Bluey, in a manner that's great for Maysa's rich soulful voice! The record follows perfectly in the soulful tradition set by some of London's best singers of the past decade, but it also moves to a whole new level, with nice jazzy touches that remind us of some of the recent American underground soul work, like stuff by N'Dambe or Laurnea. Titles include "Blue Light", "Mirrors", "Hooked On Your Love", "Shadows & Light", "Got To Be Strong", "Earth Child", and a great cover of Gil Scott-Heron's classic "The Bottle".
