Large Professor1st Class ... CD
Matador, 2002. Used ... $6.99
It may not be the BeAllEndAll that the Matador hype machine is trying to cook up, but Large Professor's waaaay too long in the making first LP (first to be officially released, anyway) is a very solid effort, and a strong, raw head bumper all the way through. Nothing fancy, just tried and true hip hop, with a loud and clear, confident verbal flow and stable beats and samples. A welcome trip back to not so distant era of hip hop that the Professor first made his mark (Breaking Atoms, Illmatic, etc) without sounding self-consciously retro. Includes "'Bout That Time", " Kool", "Blaze Rhymes", "Stay Chisel" featuring Nas, "In The Sun" featuring Q Tip, "Born To Ball", "Alive In Stereo", and more. CD

Kool G Rap & DJ PoloStreet Stories – The Best Of G Rap & Polo ... CD
Cold Chillin/Traffic, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $6.99
Prime, hard hitting Kool G Rap & DJ Polo – a killer collection of their pioneering, classic cuts from the Cold Chillin' era! The MC & DJ duo was plenty popular in this period – which essentially covers '89-'92 – but they're one of those combos whose influences on east coast rap to come arguably stretches even farther and wider than their own recorded legacy. Tough street tales, vital golden age DJ skills and collaborations with fellow legends Marley Marl, Large Professor, Eric B, Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane. 5 tracks in all: "Streets of New York", "Truly Yours", "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "Poison", "Money In The Bank" with Large Professor, Freddie Foxxx & Ant Live, "Butcher Shop", "Bad To The Bone", "Road To The Riches", "It's A Demo", "I'm Fly (Original 12" Version)", "Riker's Island (Original 12" Version)", "Rhyme Time (Original 12" Version)" and more. Mad SkillzFrom Where??? ... LP
Big Beat/Atlantic, 1996. Very Good+ 2LP ... $24.99
Overlooked genius from Madd Skillz! He's one of those MCs from the mid 90s (like Supernatural) who everyone was watching, did loads of mixtape appearances, put out something on a LP on a major label, and then just about disappeared. He deserved more! Tuere's some really dope tracks that let you know why everyone was paying attention – most notably "Nod Factor", and some nice tight mid 90s beats, including a couple of early pre-Ummah Jay Dee tracks, plus the Beatnuts, Large Professor, Buckwild and Shawn J Period. 16 tracks including "Doin' Time In Tha Cypha", "It's Going Down", "Extra Abstract Skills", "Move Ya Body" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a partially unglued top seam and a few light creases.)

Herbie MannSultry Serenade ... LP
Riverside, 1957. Very Good- ... $19.99
An early record by Herbie Mann, and one that offers a nice treat – bass clarinet! Although Herbie made his fame in the 60s with his Latiny flute playing, he was also a darn good bass clarinetist, and he plays both instruments on this rare early session from 1957. The bass clarinet doesn't dominate the whole recording, but when Herbie uses it, he gets an incedible tone – especially next to the baritone of Jack Nimitz, who also plays on the album. Titles include "Professor", "One Morning In May", "Sultry Serenade", and "When The Sun Comes Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(White & blue label Bill Grauer pressing with deep groove and microphone logo. Cover has light wear with a large, but light stain on the back.)

NasIllmatic (2CD 10th Anniversary Edition) ... CD
Columbia, 1994. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
Nas hasn't put out a completely successful full length since this all time classic from 92/93/94 – and if his legacy is just a bit tarnished by the hit-and-miss quality of his subsequent albums, and his all too public slaying at the hands of Jay-Z, nothing can take away the impact of this damn near perfect slice of east coast street hop. Nasir, "World Is Yours", indeed. Other tracks include "NY State Of Mind", "Life's A B***h", "Half Time", "One Love" and the rest, with all of that great production by Primo, Pete Rock and Large Professor. Columbia has gone all out with the reverence on this double disc reissue, with remastered digital sound polish and a bonus disc with remixes of "World Is Yours", "Life's A B***h", "One Love" and "It Ain't Hard To Tell", plus bonus tracks "On The Real" and "Star Wars". Columbia, 1994. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.98
20th anniversary edition of Nas's masterpiece Illmatic – which will probably stand forever as one of the greatest hip hop full lengths of its time – maybe even for all time. Nas has had some creative ups-and-downs over the years, but nothing can take away the impact of this damn near perfect slice of east coast street hop. Nasir, "World Is Yours", indeed. The original LP is pure greatness – 100% lean, masterful production by DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock and Q-Tip – and the titles include "NY State Of Mind", "Life's A B***h", "Half Time", "One Love", "Represent", "Memory Lane" and more. Illmatic XX also includes a bonus disc with 10 rare remixes, new artwork and a 24-page booklet, featuring liner notes by Sacha Jenkins, tributes and rare photos. CD

New Kool G Rap & DJ PoloWanted Dead Or Alive (expanded edition) ... CD
Cold Chillin, 1990. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece from one of the greatest duos in late 80s/early 90s hip hop – the classic Wanted Dead Or Alive from Kool G Rap & DJ Polo – a 2CD edition packed with bonus tracks! The original album was the middle one of 3 LPs before Kool G Rap and DJ Polo split up, and the last one before G Rap decided to dive fully into the east coast gangsta persona. Benchmark production by Large Professor, Eric B, Biz Markie and G Rap keep the beats fresh, while the MC with the crisp lisp delivers the lyrical goods on classics like "Talk Like Sex", "Erase Racism", "Streets Of New York" and "Money In The Bank". Also includes "Bad To The Bone", "Play It Kool", "Death Wish and "Jive Talk". Disc 2 features loads of 12" and alternate versions, remixes and instrumentals, many of which are on CD for the first time ever! CD

New NasIllmatic ... CD
Columbia, 1994. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album, with "Life's A Bitch", "One Love" and "It Ain't Hard To Tell" – what more do we need to say? How about beats by Primo, Pete Rock and Large Professor? Did this one get 5 mics from the Source? Didn't that count for something at the time? At any rate, despite the subsequent ups and downs of his career, and battles with Jay Z, amongst others, this album still stands as an all time high water mark for microphone technique and lyrical skills, with production to match. Also includes "NY State Of Mind", "The World Is Yours", "Halftime", "One Time 4 Your Mind", "Memory Lane" and "Represent". CD

Asphodel, 1999. Used (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
More turntable wizardry from the X-Men/X-ecutioner's Rob Swift. "Dope on Plastic" uses that phrase from the Uptown single plus snippets from other classic '80s era hip hop for an ode to – you guessed it – Rob Swift. The remix features a couple verses from the Large Professor. "Do You Dance" has more scratching and uses Mantronix, Spoonie G, and more. The 'acapella' versions feature just the scratches and sample without the underlying beats and basslines. All pressed up on heavy vinyl. 12-inch, Vinyl record

New Pete Rock & INICenter Of Attention – Hip Hop Underground Soul Classics ... LP
BBE (UK), Mid 90s. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A lost relic from Hip Hop's golden mid 90s era! This is the second of two albums from Pete Rock's archives of great unissued hip hop to see release thanks to the knowledgeable crate diggers at BBE/Rapster, recorded during the period Pete Rock & CL Smooth were nearing the end of their contract with Elektra. Pete started putting together some side projects and a healthy archive of top notch productions featuring young & hungry MCs, some of which remained under wraps for years, and achieved legendary status. Of course this set's built on the staple Soul Brother #1 sound: rich and heavy with dense bass, propulsive beats, strong jazz and soul samples, and a tight over all sound, but the INI MC's are no slouch on the mic either, leaving us wonder why this only saw the light of day as a handful of promo singles. Rob O and Grap Luva handle the rhymes on the set with guest appearances by Q-Tip and Large Professor on "To Each His Own". 16 tracks in all, including the intro: "No More Words", "Step Up", "Think Twice", "Square One", "The Life I Live", "Krossroads", "Fakin' Jax", "What You Say", "Mind Over Matter", "Don't You Love It", "Microphone Wanderlust" and more! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has very light creases, otherwise a beautiful copy.)

John WilliamsPenelope ... LP
MGM, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack from Johnny Williams – scored for a goofy heist film starring Natalie Wood, and featuring a wonderful blend of jazzy, bossa, and harmony-styled tunes! The whole thing's extremely lively – and although Williams is working with a larger orchestra on most of the record, there's also some bouncing electric bass on the bottom of most cuts – and nice use of jazzy solo instruments. The title theme "Penelope" is sung in a sunshine harmony mode by The Pennypipers, a group assembled for the record – and other tracks include "Poolside", "The Girl In The Yellow Dress", "Girl Chase", "The Mad Professor", "Penny's Arcade", and "At The Art Museum". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label promo. Cover has a small name in pen on front and a crease on one corner.)
