A sweet mellow groover from the mighty Lamont Dozier – a set that's not nearly as well known as his earlier work of the 70s, but one that has the Motown man still riding strong! In contrast to the fuller, clubbier grooves of Dozier's ABC work, most of the tunes here are a bit more laidback and mellow – still with a groove, but not nearly as full-on – and with a sophisticated, sensual feel that's a fair bit like Leon Ware at his best! Production is nice and warm throughout, but never too slick – and there's some really compelling keyboard bits, especially some use of Prophet 5, which makes for a nice contrast with Lamont's vocals. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Why", "Playing For Keeps", "Chained", "Cool Me Out", "Working On You", "Starting Over", and "You Made Me A Believer".

A massive album by Lamont Dozier – probably his best ever! Every cut's a winner, and the LP shines with a sharpness and tightness that's missing from some of Lamont's other LPs from the 70s. The songwriting is impeccable – and as the album progresses, you get that eerie "deja vu" feeling you can have when discovering a landmark work for the first time. There's a hint of funk in the mix, but the strongest point is the production – which bowls over the top with a mix of strings, piano, and Lamont's wonderfully honest vocals. Includes the wonderful soul anthem "Don't Leave Me", which comes up again in a very tight instrumental version – plus the tracks "The Picture Will Never Change", "Why Can't We Be Lovers", and "Slipping Away". Great all the way through, and a stunning bit of seventies soul that will have you returning again and again! CD features a massive 10 bonus tracks too – including "Superwoman", "Lady By Day", "I'm Gonna Hijack Ya", "Don't Leave Me Starvin For Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Why Can't We Be Lovers (single)", "Let's Get Together", "I'm So Glad (parts 1 & 2)", and "You Took Me From A World Outside".

Post-Motown magic from the team of Holland-Dozier-Holland – a killer collection of their initial work for the Invictus label, including some of Lamont Dozier's greatest solo material! The set is smoking all the way through – a real high-point in 70s soul, with cuts that have gone onto be underground classics over the years – the kind of music we started Dusty Groove just to help promote! Lamont's vocals are tremendous, and even the instrumental tracks cook brilliantly too – thanks to a sharp punch that the trio never had this well back at Motown – kind of a 70s refinement of their previous groove, with a sound that's completely sublime all the way through. Titles include "Can't Get Enough", "New Breed Kinda Woman", "I'm So Glad", "Super Woman", "Where Did We Go Wrong", "Lady By Day", "Don't Leave Me Starving For Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", and both vocal and instrumental versions of the killer "Don't Leave Me".

Ben E King in a few different modes – all of them great, and a great demonstration of the continuing strengths he brought to his work at Atlantic Records in the 70s! The album features the work of three different production forces – Lamont Dozier, who serves up some sweet warm grooves that further King's great move to modern soul at the time; the team of Jim Stewart and Bettye Crutcher, who add in some deeper Stax-styled roots; and underground club genius Patrick Adams, who really makes some magic on one number! King holds strong in all these settings, and really rises to the top throughout – on titles that include "Wonder Woman", "Let Me Live In Your Life", "I See The Light", "Fly Away", "Fifty Years", "Spoiled", "Sweet Rhapsody", and "Dark Storm On The Horizon".

A nice reissue which brings together 3 LPs by one of the most underrecognized talents of 70's soul! DJ's deep soul voice is smooth and mellow, with the kind of honest heartbreaking quality that you find in the best work by Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. It's Good To Be Alive finds DJ in a strong set of arrangements that have a stripped-down feel, with a little bit of electronics, as on some of Stevie's best LPs from the early 70's. Tracks include "Hold On, Be Strong", "Think I'll Make It Anyhow", "If You Didn't Love Me (Don't Go Away)", "Love You Forever", and "Say You Love Me". On the Road Again is another classic work from DJ – with a soaring, sweeping, righteous soul feel that reminds us of Rance Allen at his best, or of some of the smooth work of Lamont Dozier from the same time. DJ wrote, arranged, and produced all the tracks on this album, and the cuts have a slight nod towards spiritual gospel, with excellent jazzy touches that keep things in a modern vein. Titles include "Let My Life Shine", "Secret Lady", "Girl I Love You", "Say You Love Me, One More Time", and "Holding On To Love". Love Music & Life is as great the other two – with tracks that include "Saved By Love", "Love Will Make It Better", "No Price", "You Against You", "Hold Out For Love", and "Love Is On The Way". 30 tracks on 2 CDs!

Easily the greatest album ever from brothers John and Billy Valentine – a seminal 80s groove classic, produced with a sweet jazzy touch from keyboardist Bobby Lyle! The record's a real standout from the time – a solid soul effort that still manages strong dancefloor appeal – thanks to a range of midtempo numbers that still resonate strongly in the modern steppers era. Strongest among these tracks is the pair's classic "Money's Too Tight To Mention" – offered up here in both instrumental and vocal versions that are better than the later remake by Gwen Guthrie. But the whole album is plenty great too, and features sophisticated vocals that move in the same early 80s territory explored by Leon Ware or Lamont Dozier! Titles include "Money's Too Tight To Mention", "Just Another Love Song", "Just Let Me Be Close To You", "This Kind Of Love", and "I'll Make You Happy" – plus 2 "overture" tracks that make the whole thing come off like a long suite of soul!

Great smooth soul from Wee Gee – a wonderful little record from the dawn of the 80s! The album's a great one, thanks largely to Vernon Bullock, who wrote, arranged, and produced with that uptempo modern style that he brought to his best work of the 70s. The soaring title track is a 10+ minute epic that really transcends – hitting an emotional groove early and holding it throughout – and the rest of the tunes are just as nice! Wee Gee's a pretty decent vocalist – and the lofty arrangements keep him in the groove in a mode that's similar to some of Lamont Dozier's best work. The keys and synthesizers are nice – never oversteeped in ways that mired modern soul later in the decade and they go very will with the larger arrangements! Titles include "Hold On (To Your Dreams)", "Let Me Lay With You", "You've Been A Part Of Me", "Remember The Love", and "Don't Make Me The Reason".

Not 80s hits, but a great collection of lesser-known gems from the left side of the soul spectrum – some cuts by bigger artists that sparkle even more strongly than their hits – mixed with work by some less common acts too – all served up in a double-length package that's filled with surprises! A beautiful collection of all the great and rare material Eddie Holland cut as solo singer in the late 50s and early 60s – including the incredible early Motown material, plus tracks he cut for Mercury, Kudo, Tamla and United Artists! Of course Eddie Holland is best remembered for uber-legendary work as producer, composer and arranger with the Holland-Dozier-Holland super soul unit – for damn good reason, but it's his early work as singer is way too strong to be considered a mere footnote to his greater legacy. Many of the cuts were written and produced by Berry Gordy, along with numbers written and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, some recorded more famously by later acts, so what you truly have here is the foundation for great things to come – it's beautiful stuff that shines brightly in its own light.
