Sublime 70s work from Darrow Fletcher – a singer we mostly know for his early soul singles in Chicago – but one who really hits his stride on these rare sessions from LA! The music was mostly recorded for Ray Charles' Crossover label – although a few singles also appeared on Atlantic too – and the work has Fletcher's wonderful sweet soul vocal approach coming into play with these warmly flowing grooves that are mighty nice – almost a west coast take on the style that Leroy Hutson was doing in Chicago on Curtom! In the setting, Fletcher's even more appealing than before – a mature singer with a hell of a balance between class and soul, poise and swing – more than enough to rival his hippest contemporaries. Pianist Andy Laverne has some strong help on horns here – Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Jerry Bergonzi on tenor sax – both working together to give the album a very strong sound! The tunes are all originals by Laverne, and filled with the right sort of color to bring out the best in Alex and Jerry – players who really complement each other with their sense of phrasing. Laverne's chord structure is also a key part of the album's sound – given a nice bump by the bass of Mike Richmond and drums of Jason Tiemann – who keep things crisp and crackling, and really encourage the colors of the horns to ring out. An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! One of the most unique musical talents we've heard in years – finally given his due in this wonderful collection of work from the late 70s and early 80s! Alain Peters works in a style that's beyond description – a global mix of elements from both the Caribbean and Africa, but often given a slight South Asian spin, given that Alain spent a fair bit of time exploring the cultures of the Indian Ocean – which he weaves here into a hypnotic blend of percussion, guitar, and extremely evocative French language lyrics! Rather than stepping on and pilfering from a range of cultures – Peters is instead a unique citizen of the post-colonial world, and allows himself a boundary-less space to stretch out beyond any simple generic descriptions. If we had to try to relate this music to anything, we might say that it's at the level of some of the most perfect experiments on the Saravah Records label – with a similarly haunting, live-changing vibe. Tempting sounds from the great Piero Piccioni – two late 60s horror scores on a single CD! First up is Temptation – a soundtrack that's got some wonderful organ lines and slow-moving grooves – of the sort that were covered by the Easy Tempo series years back, when we first fell in love with Piccioni's music! There's a slow swell and soft step to the music that's mighty nice – almost a perfect distillation of the Italian bossa influences that made for some of the best film scores of the time! The CD features 13 numbers from the film – all of them great, and the kind of variations on a single groovy theme you might find in Armando Trovajoli's La Matriarca. La Figlia Del Capitano is a bit richer, with more strings in the music, and a few more dramatic spots too – yet overall, the mood nicely fits that of Temptation – with a sense of holding back, then running forward – which suits the music very well. A sweetly sexy soundtrack from the great Berto Pisano – one that really lives up to its image on the cover! There's a gently grooving feel to the music that's right up there with the best erotica work from Morricone – handled by Pisano with light strings, keyboards, bits of flute, and some especially nice vocals from Edda Dell'Orso, who's definitely on the warmer side of her talents with a record like this! The tunes glide along nicely, and are supported with some great artwork from the film – and titles include "Orchestra For Edda", "Piano Dreams", "Free Hammond", "Sound For A Child", and "Voice In The Night". A weird and wonderful little record – one that combines noisy industrial moments with acoustic folksy elements – all in a way that's not unlike the direction Current 93 would take later on in the 80s! Regrelh somehow manage to evoke both a primitive pagan past and an eerie apocalyptic future – working in some of the same genre-crossing styles as the hipper side of their French scene a few years before – but with a vibe that's completely their own, and completely stunning throughout! The vocals at times are almost medieval, yet the record also uses guitar and electronics too – which makes for a stunning blend of modes that's unlike anything else recorded at the time. As with most French underground work of the time, the record's very much in its own space apart from trends in the UK or US – as you'll hear on titles that include "Esmai", "Del Sieu Tort Farai Esmenda", "Pois Tals Saber Mi Sortz E'M Creis", and "Elogi De La Guerra". Mongo Santamaria at the height of his Latin Soul years – working on a cool Columbia session titled after an earlier hit, but served up with his new lean sound of the late 60s! The album's got that perfect Santamaria combo from the time – a group that features trumpet and these wonderfully sharp arrangements from the great Marty Sheller – plus very smoking reed work from a young Hubert Laws, wailing away on flute and tenor, and Bobby Capers on alto and baritone – both players who mix jazz and soul instrumental modes, to bring a hell of a lot of feeling to the overall sound of the band – in ways that really get past more familiar use of trumpet or trombone in other Latin combos. Freaked-out fuzzy work from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – all with a sound that's quite appropriate for a film that was also known as Hallucination Strip! There's a lot more guitar in here than you'll hear on other Italian 70s scores – often used in fuzzy, psychedelic ways with a definite rock influences – but also laying out in more spare, open-ended styles too – almost spacey at points, with some really weird sounds mixed in alongside keyboards and percussion! The music has some touches of darkness, but not really any of the atonality of some of the horror work of the generation – and even though many tracks are short, they pack in plenty of punch, and plenty of fresh ideas too. A classic album of jazzy tunes from the British pop scene of the early 80s – and the kind of work that really helped set the stage for the later Acid Jazz movement in London – but which is equally enjoyable as one of the loveliest moments in the post-punk generation! A surprisingly sensitive score from Henry Mancini – much more so than we'd expect for this famous film about Joan Crawford's child-rearing habits! Mancini's at his mature best here – and there's lots of lovely, beautiful little tunes that kind of unfold like gentle flowers – slight strings and light woodwinds that move slowly, but with this really evocative quality – one that builds up a bit more strongly as the score progresses towards the end. Really great stuff – and a rich reminder that Mancini has so many great moments that go way beyond his familiar hits. The only album ever issued by Matadi – a hip French group from those key post-colonial years on the Parisian scene, and one who serve up this wonderful blend of late 70s club and West African roots! The style is almost a few years ahead of its time – especially when compared to some of the groups who would break big on that early 80s moment of global circulation of new Afro-styled sounds – especially when some of the keyboards almost seem to hint at electro styles from years to come! Yet the overall approach is nice and warm, very 70s funky on most tracks – upbeat, and laced with guitar solos from Sammy Massamba, who put the whole thing together – on titles that include "Afro", "My Own Style", "Lode", "Viva Afrika", "Bola Bola", and "Timawok". Randal Fisher blows tenor with a tone that's really unique – one that we can't easily explain in words, but which has a sense of individuality that marks the record right from the start, and continues to delight as the set rolls on! There's kind of a crisp, higher-tone in his instrument – yet still a great degree of warmth, and never any attempt to sound too avant just to set himself apart. Instead, Randal has this way of blowing at a very personal level, matched in the group by these beautiful expressions on guitar from Nadav Peled, who illuminates the tunes gently but importantly – next to the bass of Michael Alvidrez and drums of Evan Greer – all younger players from the LA scene that we hope to hear plenty from in years to come. Ike's got the distinction of being one of a number of 70s soul artists who were in prison while recording their debut efforts – and we're not ever sure if he made it out of the pen after this album came out. Whatever the case, the album's a surprisingly nice album of mellow soul tracks – endorsed by Stevie Wonder on the back, and clearly coming out of a trajectory that follows the best of Stevie's early 70s albums on Tamla. The album includes a killer long slow funky instrumental called "Antoinette" – with spacey keyboards, nice drum fills, and a bit of fuzzy guitar breakdowns. The cut's a monster – more than enough reason to buy the record – but the other tracks are nice too, a bit out there and spacious, and kind of in the same high concept soul territory as work by Eugene McDaniels.
