Build An Ark — Dawn ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2007. New Copy .... $18.99
An amazing album from Build An Ark – even more spiritual and far-reaching than their first – and still with a vibe that rivals some of the most righteous jazz ever issued in the 70s on labels like Impulse and Strata East! The ensemble features both older and younger players – coming together in a collective exploration of some of the hipper sides of the jazz spectrum – all in a mode that recalls early genius of Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and others from many years back – recorded in a style that's completely sensitive to the nuances of the music. Carlos Nino produced, and also contributed some of the tunes – and group members include Dwight Trible on vocals, Nate Morgan on piano, Adam Rudolph on kalimba, and Derf Reklaw on congas – but that's only the tip of the iceberg, given the size of the group. Titles include "Sunshine", "Healing Song", "Love Sweet Like Sugar Cane", "Dawn", "River Run", "When Ancestors Speak", "Morning Glory", "In Her Smile", and "You Yourself Are The Key To The Universe".

Build An Ark — Love – Part 1 ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2009. New Copy .... $18.99
A perfect title for a perfect record – especially given all the love we've felt from Build An Ark over the years! The album's a masterpiece through and through – easily the greatest statement ever from this already-amazing band – a contemporary ensemble, but one that we'd seamlessly rank right next to our righteous favorites on labels like Impulse Records, Tribe, or Strata East – with all the political power and sense of social mission those references would imply! The song titles alone will give you a great idea of the beautiful vibe behind Build An Ark – tunes like "Celebrate", "How Do We End All This Madness", "Love Is Everywhere", "World Peace Now", and "This Prayer For The Whole World" – which re-ignite the Love Supreme candle first lit by John Coltrane in the 1960s – burning brightly again in the 21st Century, and almost even more inspiring – given the youthful energy of the group. As always, mainman Carlos Nino deserves a hell of a lot of credit for getting something this great, this right – but the group is also very clearly a collective, and draws amazing energy from members who include Dwight Trible, Kamau Daaood, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Damon Aaron, Jim Lang, and others. In addition to above-mentioned titles, other tunes include "Sweet Thing", "World Music", "More Love", "In The Park", and "Play The Music".

Build An Ark — Love – Part 2 ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2010. New Copy .... $19.99
A brilliant extension of the Love set from Build An Ark – focusing on some of the more improvisational spirit that's integral to their cosmic groove! Love Part 2 is mix of intimate moments and soaring atmospherics from Carlos Nino, Miguel-Atwood Ferguson and the rest of the stellar ensemble, plus guests and fellow travelers such as vocalists Dwight Trible, Carmen Lundy, Leisei Chen and Mia Doi Todd, violinist Michael White and others. The overall vibe and instrumentation are unpredictable from one movement to the next, but there's always a hypnotic mood at play, be it spun by sparely furnished strings and percussion, earthy global jazz influences or far spacier dynamics! Titles include a lively (and live sounding) string jazz improvisational take on "What The World Needs Now Is Is Love" with passionate vocals and pared down lyrics by Leisei Chen flavored with violin, viola, cello and sitar – plus "Cosmic Tuning", "Nature", "Ginger", "Say Yes!", "Improvisation Day 1", "Improvisation Day 2", ""Improvisation Day 8", "Cadence Of The Love Messengers" and wonderfully unique take on Donny Hathaway's "Tryin Times" with vocals by Carmen Lundy and Dwight Trible.
(Limited edition of1000 copies.)

Super Mama Djobo — Festival ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
A sparkling live performance from this West African group of the 70s – an ensemble who hail from Guinea-Bissau, but share most of the best elements of Mali music from the time! The guitar work on these tunes is wonderfully deft – sometimes so quick-fingered and locked in with the rhythms, it feels like another instrument entirely – really matching the pulse of the ensemble's call-response vocals, which are also a really appealing aspect of the music! The sound is bright – West African music on its way to big exposure in the next decade – yet still nice and rootsy, and very spontaneous too – especially on the album's longer tracks. Titles include "Mortos Nega", "Julia", "Sociedade De Malandros", "Tamanco", and "Festival".
(Comes with a nice bonus insert too!)
Also available: Festival (180 gram deluxe edition) ... LP $23.99

Guelewar — Touki Ba Banjul – Acid Trip From Banjul To Dakar ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Mid 70s-Early 80s. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99
Some of the best material from Gambian psych funk pioneers Guelewar – a double-length collection, pulled from stellar albums of the late 70s and early 80s! Guelewar's got a really great sound here – one that brilliantly blends heavy, hypnotic rhythms, passionate vocals, swirling guitars and psychedelic organ grooves – all to create really unique vibe, and more than worthy of the legendary fame the group's gotten over the years! You might know Guelewar from their earlier work in the Supreme Eagles and Super Alligators – both great groups who prefaced the material here – infusing regional traditions with western funk, soul, and psych – to create a wicked groove that eventually evolved into the Guelewar sound! Titles include "Sama Yaya Demma N'Darr", "Sunu Makaan", "Ya Mom Samaray", "Njarama", "Tasito", "Wollou", and "Kele Fasane".

Jungle By Night — Hidden ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
An even cooler record than before from Jungle By Night – a set that still has lots of Afro Funk elements at its core, but which brings them together in some really unique ways! Some of the rhythms are nicely offbeat – not straight, and sometimes moving in weird patterns that really start the tunes off well – getting past easy expectations as the group's instrumental flurry comes into play – tight horns, heavy percussion, and these keyboards that have ways of making sounds that are sometimes a bit unusual. All instrumental – and titles include "Rangda", "Cyclin", "Dawn", "Gallow Street 34", "Night Fight", "Ethiopino", and "The Past Is History".

Le Mystere Jazz De Tombouctou — Le Mystere Jazz De Tombouctou ... LP
Mali Kunkan/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 19.99
Amazing music from Mali – quite different than most other albums we've heard from that scene in the 70s – with wonderful reed work that really lives up to the "jazz" in the group's name! The sound is bold and righteous, but with an other-worldly vibe too – a really haunting quality that grabs us like some of the most evocative Ethiopian sounds of the 70s! At some level, there's definitely a Mali touch going on in the music – some very tripped-out elements in the production, and a way of wrapping things together with an undercurrent of melancholy. Yet there's also a really unique feel to the record too – a sense of complication that moves way beyond the obvious, while still managing to groove in the process – albeit with kind of a droning quality. Titles include "Wale", "Apolo", "Leli", "Teiduma", and "Dina Waliji".

Orlandivo — Orlandivo (1977) (180 gram collector's edition) ... LP
Copacabana/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
A sweet funky classic from 70s Brazil – one of those records that's found thousands of funky fans over the decades – and which still continues to please! The set's the best-eer from Orlandivo – a soulful singer whose set up perfectly here with funky backings from the great Joao Donato – working on organ and Fender Rhodes for the set, and hitting the same soulful styles as his own great 70s albums! Grooves have a sunny feel, but these jazz funk undercurrents that are completely infectious – wicked interplay between the bass and drums, guitar and keyboards – set to vocals from Orlandivo that clearly borrow some of Jorge Ben's soulful influence too. Other players include Sivuca on accordion, Durval Ferreira on guitar, and Helcio Milito on percussion – and titles include "Um Abraco No Bengil", "Palladium", "A Felicidade", "Tudo Joia", "Juazeiro", and "Bolinha De Sabao" – plus the great "Tamaco No Samba", which is a thinly disguised version of "Samba Blim".
(Limited to 500 copies – collector's edition with 180 gram vinyl, and heavy tip-on sleeve!)

Hannibal Marvin Peterson — Tribe ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99
One of the boldest, most righteous 70s statements from trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given his previous body of work! The set's cast in the same large ensemble mode as Hannibal's Children Of The Fire album – and like that one, it features an array of all-star players, all united in the trumpeter's rich vision – artists who include Deirdre Murray on cello, Billy Hart on drums, Michael Cochrane on piano, Art Webb on flute, and Pat Peterson on vocals! Tracks are long, and build with energy that's very much in the Strata East mode – a vibe that Hannibal didn't seem to have down this well in the earlier part of the 70s, but which he more than made up for at the end of the decade with a record like this. Titles include "Now Stand", "A Sacred Multitude", "Returning To The Ways", "Of Live & Love & God", and "The Tribe".

Sun Ra — On Jupiter ... LP
Saturn/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
Righteous Ra from the end of the 70s – one of the most soulful albums ever by the Sun Ra Arkestra, and a lost treasure that's got some nice funky moments! The vibe here is very much in the Lanquidity/Disco 3000 mode – an extrapolation of styles best known from the Space Is The Place era, tightened up into more of a groove at some points, but also relaxed and more reflective at others. Our favorite track on the set is "UFO", a snapping bit of funk that comes as a real surprise from Sun Ra – and a tune that's got some nicely noisy guitar jamming alongside straighter electric rhythms – all topped off by vocals from the group and some really strong horn work! The tune's a great party funk number that shows the Arkestra at its most joyous – and other tracks include "On Jupiter", which has a great blend of light vocals, spacey moog, and snakey sax – plus the side-long "Seductive Fantasy", a laidback number that unfolds with a really gentle grace.

Sun Ra — Sleeping Beauty ... LP
Saturn/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
One of the most soulful Sun Ra albums ever – very much on the Lanquidity tip, and done with a great mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation! The vibe here is really mellow, spiritual, and warm – and the album actually feels a lot more like a session recorded for the Strata East label than it does for Saturn! Keyboards pervade the session – electric piano and organ drifting around in moody, laidback lines – augmented by occasional vibes, bits of guitar, and some wonderfully well-blown sax solo work by Marshall Allen and John Gilmore! The title track "Sleeping Beauty" runs for all of side two of the album – and it's an amazing little number that mixes instrumental passages with some great mellow Roy Ayers-styled vocals. "Door Of The Cosmos" is a bit of a groover, and even gets a bit funky at times – and the album also features the laidback spacey number "Springtime".

Dexter Story — Seasons ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
A beautiful project from the contemporary underground scene in LA – a record that shares lots of energy and musicians with recordings by Build An Ark and Life Force Trio! Dexter Story's the main force behind the record, but the set's a strongly collaborative effort – and features keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe, flute from Derf Reklaw, strings from Mighel Atwood-Ferguson, vocals from Dwight Trible, and key studio work from Carlos Nino! Story's vocals and overall conception are wonderful – soaring and soulful, with some slight cosmic touches that give the record a bit more crackle than related projects – a sound that's still steeped in spiritual jazz elements, yet which also really opens up as the set rolls on. There's a wonderful sense of variety to the tracks – due to the shifting lineup – but the overall feel is still very cohesive, and an amazing demonstration of Story's bold musical vision. Titles include "Seasons", "Into The Hour", "Love Force Trio (part 1)", "Underway", "Water Bearer", "Paddle Boat", "Bloop Drip", "Gyre Song", "As Is", "God Sun", and "Suijin".

Super Biton De Segou — Super Biton De Segou ... LP
Mali Kunkan/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99
Sublime sounds from the scene in 70s Mali – music that's an amazing hybrid of styles, and which has made this album a collector's treasure for years! There's echoes of familiar Mali modes in the music – especially in the group's use of blue notes – both in the guitar lines, and in the way the rhythms descend deeply – but there's other more exotic elements at play too – especially in the snakey reed lines, which are especially amazing – and almost feel like echoes of 70s Ethiopian music at times! The whole record's got a really unique quality – a blend of modern and traditional styles that's unlike anything else we've ever heard. Titles include "Siseni", "Yere Jabo", "Taasi Doni", "Nyeleni", "Malamini", and "Saajuru".

Jimi Tenor & Kabu Kabu — Mystery Of Aether ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
We've always loved the music of Jimi Tenor – but recently, he seems to get better and better with each new record – hitting a spiritual, soulful depth we never would have expected years ago! This album's one of his best efforts ever – and feels more like some lost 70s Euro/African rarity – as you might expect from the compelling cover! All the jazz elements of previous Tenor projects are in place – but there's also more of a pan-global influence going on – especially in the complicated percussion that graces most tracks, and which provides a wonderful counterpart to instrumentation that includes tenor, flutes, and piano from Jimi – plus trumpet from Julla Eskola and Tero Lindberg, trombone from Jay Kortehisto and Heikki Tuhkanen, and guitar from Kalle Kalima. Tracks are long, and have a feel that's somewhere between Strata East and Parisian Afro jazz experiments of the 70s – and titles include "Universal Love", "Afroeuropean", "Eternal Mystery", "Africa Kingdom", "Dance Of The Planets", "Curtain Of Steel", and "Starstuff".

Various — Deep Disco & Boogie ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99
They're not lying about the title on this one – as the package definitely overflows with deep disco and boogie! But even more importantly, the whole thing's plenty darn rare, too – really killer tracks that we haven't seen compiled elsewhere – and which really represent the cream of the crop of the underground 12" scene in the late 70s and early 80s. Most numbers are nice and long, and veer towards the warmer sounds of the late disco era, rather than the harder sounds in the decade to come – a great reminder that there's still plenty of soulful club gems out there if you know where to look – and in that respect, this compilation's a great place to do so. Titles include "You Don't Care" by China Burton, "Live For Love (12" Extended Mix)" by GC Cameron, "Hot Thang" by Cash, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Savares Mix)" by TJ James & The Fist-O-Funk Orchestra, "I Need You" by Ricky Womack, "Don't Fight The Feeling (12" Mix)" by Master Force, "Closer" by Chemistry, and "Brotherson" by Ojeda Penn.

Various — Surinam – Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dance Floors 1976 to 1983 ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP .... $19.99
Really rare grooves from an incredibly obscure scene – and that's saying a lot, given how many global sounds have been circulating in recent years! The cuts here represent a unique outpouring of funky club styles from the nation of Surinam – tracks recorded by a handful of groups in the wake of their mid-70s independence – and as filled with as much joy and positive energy as you might imagine from such a political moment! The grooves are surprisingly great – upbeat funk, with lots of jazzy inflections – in a space that's somewhere between the sound of Fantasy Records in the mid 70s, and Capitol soul at the start of the 80s – tight, but never too slick – and as cool as it is classy. Lyrics are in English, and titles include "Sweet Dream" by Alwin Reingoud, "Groovy Weekend" and "Disco Party" by Erwin Bouterse & The Group Roetoe, "Try Try Try" and "You Are Gonna Miss Me" by Solat, "Funkin In Your Mind" and "Going Insane" by Sumy, "Here's To You" by Thunderstorm, and "Waiting For Your Love" by Usje Sukatma.

new Tony Allen & Afrika 70 — Jealousy ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first of the legendary Tony Allen albums – and it's got a killer groove that's very similar to some of the best Fela work of the early 70s! Fela and his group (Afrika 70) are still working with Tony here, and Fela lays down some tenor and piano solos – but make no mistake, it's Tony's show – and it's a great one. Allen's drums are right out front – and from the first note of the record, you know it's his own bag. Two long tracks – "Jealousy" and "Hustler" – make up the set, but that's plenty for us!

new Zelia Barbosa — Brazil – Songs Of Protest ... LP
Monitor/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing record – one we'd easily rank right up there with some of our favorite 60s albums from Brazil – including work by Baden Powell or Elis Regina! This session has echoes of the best of both of those artists, but also predates their key moments too – a groundbreaking record that combines older folkloric themes and groovier rhythms of the post-bossa generation – all with an echoey brilliance that reminds us a lot of Powell's classic Afro Sambas record, but sung with the fierce emotion we've always loved in Elis. We've never seen another record from Zelia Barbosa, but this one moment of genius is more than enough to make us love her – a bold, righteous album that no doubt languished in the 60s in the world/folk underground of the Monitor label, but which would have exploded in Brazil had it been issued on Philips or Forma! Just about every cut's a winner, and titles include "Pedro Pedreiro", "Cheganca", "Nega Dina", "Zelao", "Cancao Da Terra", "Sina De Caboclo", "Feio Nao E Bonita", and "Opiniao".

new Myrian Makenwa — La Extraodinaria ... LP
Discos Machuca/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A Colombian album, but one with a heavy dose of African influence too – a sweet blend of modes that virtually defies categorization, and which makes the record bristle with energy all the way through! There's definitely a trace of more familiar Latin rhythms here – bits of cumbia, and some slight Caribbean elements – but the whole thing's pretty tripped-out too – with some of the Afro-psych production styles that were used more heavily on the other side of the Atlantic in the decade before – a far cry from the cleaner sounds that were beginning to emerge in the more mainstream Colombian scene in the 80s. Percussion is tight, and often very uptempo – and instrumentation mixes offbeat keyboard lines with lean guitar bits – but sometimes drops out so there's just percussion behind the vocals. Titles include "Calambre", "Lady Mankenwa", "El Platano", "Tamba", "Viva Africa", and "Amapondo".

new Hannibal Marvin Peterson — Tribe ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tracks are long, and build with energy that's very much in the Strata East mode – a vibe that Hannibal didn't seem to have down this well in the earlier part of the 70s, but which he more than made up for at the end of the decade with a record like this. new Hannibal Marvin Peterson — Tribe (180 gram collector's edition) ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
(Limited to 500 copies – collector's edition with 180 gram vinyl, and heavy tip-on sleeve!)

new Salah Ragab & The Cairo Jazz Band — Salah Ragab & The Cairo Jazz Band Present Egyptian Jazz – Ramadan In Space Time ... LP
Art Yard/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves like you've never heard before – the seminal sides by Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band! As you can probably guess from their name, the ensemble was an Egyptian one – working at the end of the 60s in an incredible blend of jazz and more traditional Egyptian-styled sounds – a blend that comes across with all the exotic feel of the pyramids at dawn, but which manages to groove like some of the best funky work from America at the time! Instrumentation includes lot of percussion, heavy piano and horns, and some especially great flute on most tracks – all coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we've heard before. This collection is the first time that this music has been brought together officially, all with the kind of top-shelf production and packaging we've come to expect from the Art Yard label! LP version includes the tracks "Egypt Strut", "Ramadan In Space Time", "Dawn", "Neveen", "Oriental Mood", "Kleopatra", and "Mervat".

new Super Biton De Segou — Super Biton De Segou Anthology ... CD
Mali Kunkan/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s. New Copy .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest groups in Mali during the 70s – a legendary ensemble with a really other-worldly sound! Super Biton De Segou have a way of folding together their horns with their grooves that's really mindblowing – taking all the sharp edges and exotic flavors of the reeds, and having them step in line beautifully with the haunting rhythms of the tunes – often very elliptical and hypnotic, with a quality that's not unlike some of the Ethio grooves of the time – but definitely with the rootsier feel you'd expect in music from Mali! Vocals are every bit as well integrated as the horns – and titles include "So Karafe", "Siseni", "Malamini", "Nyangaran Foli", "Yere Jabo", "Alioune Sissoko", and "Taasi Doni".

new Various — Surinam – Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dance Floors 1976 to 1983 ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lyrics are in English, and titles include "Sweet Dream" by Alwin Reingoud, "Groovy Weekend" and "Disco Party" by Erwin Bouterse & The Group Roetoe, "Try Try Try" and "You Are Gonna Miss Me" by Solat, "Funkin In Your Mind" and "Going Insane" by Sumy, "Here's To You" by Thunderstorm, and "Waiting For Your Love" by Usje Sukatma.

new Build An Ark — Peace With Every Step – Sampler EP (with exclusive track) ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2004. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous albums of the 21st century so far – and an instant classic we'll be loving for years! Build An Ark are a seriously heavy soul jazz ensemble, with roots and traditions that stretch back to the most righteous days of the 70s underground – the brainchild of producer Carlos Nino and vocalist Dwight Trible – and featuring work by soul jazz stalwarts that include Phil Ranelin, Nate Morgan, Derf Reklaw, Adam Rudolph, and others – all coming together in a fresh, new expression of the righteous ideals that first motivated their original work! Under the guidance of Nino, the group really gels together nicely – working in a loose mode that's a nice change from the tighter cosmic 21st century soul of the European scene – and returning to the organic, almost folksy forms that first emerged on 70s independent labels like Tribe, Strata East, and Nimbus. LA luminary Nate Morgan plays some great Fender Rhodes on many of the album's best tracks – and singer Dwight Trible has a soulful range that's somewhere between the style of Terry Callier and Leon Thomas. This EP features 5 tracks in all – including a massively beautiful remake of Pharoah Sanders "You've Got To Have Freedom", plus Phil Ranelin's "Vibes From The Tribe", and the original tracks "Pure Imagination/Tortoise & The Hare", "Door Of The Cosmos (take 1)", and "Marcia" – the last 2 of which weren't on the full LP!

new IG Culture — Soulful Shanghai ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
One of the crunchiest efforts we've heard from IG Culture in awhile – a record that's filled with the cosmic beats we've always loved in his music, yet firmly grounded on earth overall! The set mixes heavy rhythms with lots of vocals and rhymes – efforts from ID 4 Windz, Mr Mensah, Julie Dexter, K Banger, Bilal Salaam, and John Robinson – all wrapped and layered together in ways that are quite different from conventional hip hop, and which really resonate with the kind of collective, collaborative spirit we love in IG's music! There's an even darker feel here than usual – which we really appreciate – and titles include "Catalog Pieces", "Futures Back", "Black Renaissance", "Core Exit", "Truth", "Tangile Dream", "Outsider", "What's Happening", "The Sankofaz Peace Ark-Extra", and "Do The Math".

Other players include Sivuca on accordion, Durval Ferreira on guitar, and Helcio Milito on percussion – and titles include "Um Abraco No Bengil", "Palladium", "A Felicidade", "Tudo Joia", "Juazeiro", and "Bolinha De Sabao" – plus the great "Tamaco No Samba", which is a thinly disguised version of "Samba Blim".

new Sun Ra — Antique Blacks (180 gram vinyl deluxe edition) ... LP
Art Yard/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing work from Sun Ra – record that really features a great range of sounds and styles, and a heck of a lot of soul as well! Ra plays some especially nice rocksichord on the set – that freaky, fuzzy keyboard that comes off sounding like a guitar, even though it's played with keys – and there's some spiritual undercurrents to the set that are different than some of Ra's other albums with the instrument – some deeply feeling rhythms and soulful, spiritual expressions that really belie the Space Is The Place generation in which the album was cut. A few recitations imbue the record with a bold sense of poetry, which seems to be carried through strongly in the instrumentation too – especially on John Gilmore's tenor lines, which almost have a Shepp-like quality at points. Other players include Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto, Ahk Tal Ebah on trumpet, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Sly on electric guitar – and titles include "Song No 1", "There Is Change In The Air", "Antique Blacks", "Would I For All That Were", "Ridiculous I & The Cosmos Me", and "This Song Is Dedicated To Nature's God".

If this is disco, point us in the direction of Studio 54! The album's one of Ra's greatest from the 70s – recorded in Italy in 1978, and featuring some incredibly otherworldly keyboards that are some of his most enigmatic on record! The track "Disco 3000" is an incredible workout on synthesizer, with a tiny bit of drum machine, a little "Space Is The Place" breakdown, and all of the wild sound you'd expect from a Sun Ra album. The cut goes on for quite some time, and is really fantastic. Side two of the record features two more long tracks – the sweetly soulful "Friendly Galaxy", a great soul jazz number, and "Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens", which has spooky organ, frenetic bass, and somber percussion!

new Sun Ra — Lost Arkestra Vol 2 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Kindred Spirits/Art Yard (Netherlands), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
A limited edition vinyl nugget – one that brings forth three rare tracks from the Cosmo Earth Fantasy project! First up is the beautiful "World Of Africa" – a tune that's partly chanted vocals over percussion, partly skittish guitar that dips and turns all over the groove – in a really exotic, hypnotic sort of way! "Love Is Always" is this sublime ballad – with Ra playing echoey piano lines over slow percussion, which then opens up to a soulful tenor solo that's incredible – the Arkestra at their spiritual best! "Space Is The Place" completes the record – but done here in a very offbeat, upbeat version that features lots of chanting and changing up the groove – much more live and spontaneous than any other take we've heard of the tune – almost as if they're forming the track out of spoken ideas between members of the Arkestra!

Super-dope sounds from Venice Dawn – a sweet 7" single that packs the punch of their much longer releases! "Turn Down The Sound" is a wicked harmony soul cut, but one that's laced with lots of psychedelic elements – including the production – and set to these slow funk rhythms that are really outta sight! "1969 Organ" is a tune that really lives up to its title – another trippy track that's built around a breakbeat with spacey elements – and a cool Yes-like organ line in the middle!

new Various — Deep Disco & Boogie ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Titles include "You Don't Care (Long Version)" by China Burton, "Live For Love (12" Extended Mix)" by GC Cameron, "Hot Thang" by Cash, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Savares Mix)" by TJ James & The Fist-O-Funk Orchestra, "I Need You" by Ricky Womack, "Don't Fight The Feeling (12" Mix)" by Master Force, "Closer" by Chemistry, and "Brotherson" by Ojeda Penn.

new African Brothers Band — Tribute To DK (180 gram collector's edition) ... LP
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99 Out Of Stock
A rare treasure from 70s Ghana – a record that's incredibly hypnotic right from the start – and a set that may well be the best album ever from the African Brothers Band! The rhythms intertwine with the guitar lines in this really beautiful way – flowing and bubbling, with a pulsing quality throughout – yet a groove that's also gentler than some other African work you may know of this vintage. The vocals provide another layer of magic – themselves dipping, turning, and changing with the rhythms in really complicated ways – yet coming off with this incredibly "right" feel that makes this modern music feel extremely organic! Tremendous stuff throughout – with tracks that include "Kyeremirekuku", "Ma Me Nsu Ma Wo", "DK Nyarko", and "Owuo Nye".

Tony Allen steps out onto his own – moving away from the Afrika 70 group who accompanied him on his first three solo albums – nicely cooking here into a whole new groove! The tracks are a bit shorter than the side-long jams of previous records, but no less funky – as Tony somehow manages to pack all the great bits he learned while working with Fela into a tighter space – coming up with the nicely offbeat grooves we've always loved him for – in a large lineup that's heavy on guitars, keyboards, and percussion – with some nice trumpet and baritone sax as well! There's vocals on most tracks – but mostly in the sing-song chorus mode – and titles include the classic "Ariya", plus "Road Safety", "Love Is A Natural Thing", and "No Discrimination".

Really amazing music from this very unique group – a Malian ensemble who mix together elements of Dogon roots with 70s electric touches! At the core, the sound here is very rootsy – lots of percussion and quick stringed instruments – played in cyclical rhythms that are extremely hypnotic. Yet there's also some weird production on the guitar and organ that space things out nicely – never too trippy, but with a slightly cosmic undercurrent that lifts the music up into space – giving things a slightly ethereal quality, even when grooving! Titles include "Kanaga", "Gambari", "Sory Bamba", "Sare Mabo", "N'Do N'Do", and "Kulukutu".

new Sun Ra — Lost Arkestra Vol 1 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Kindred Spirits/Art Yard (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
Tremendous lost work from Sun Ra – three previously-unreleased tracks from the archives – all of them great! Side one features this wonderful spiritual number, "Along Came Ra" – performed live with some great lead vocals from June Tyson to start things out – then given a cool recitation by Ra in the middle, over ensemble vocals and loads of great percussion! Next is "The Sky Is A Sea Of Darkness" – a spare keyboard tune that mixes up a "Space Is The Place" organ riff with some great vocals (from Ra?) – beautifully, soulfully sung with a poetic feel that's wonderful! Last up is one of the most soulful versions of "We Travel The Spaceways" we've ever heard – slow, with piano in the background underneath the vocals – which themselves are deeply personal, and some of the most moving we've ever heard on a Ra tune. All three tracks are on the inside, spiritual side of the Arkestra spectrum – and all mighty nice!

Horace Silver — Serenade To A Soul Sister ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Good+ Gatefold .... $11.99
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still pen a hit when he wants – and gave the world the tune "Psychedelic Sally" with this set – but he also displays a penchant for more complicated rhythms and freer horn expressions on beautiful tunes like "Kindred Spirits", "Rain Dance", and "Jungle Juice". The group's filled with great players – from tenor work by Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, trumpet by Charles Tolliver, and drums by a young Billy Cobham!

Larry Jon Wilson — New Beginnings/Let Me Sing My Song To You ... CD
Monument/Omni (Australia), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Country rock and blue-eyed southern soul from Larry Jon Wilson – his New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song released by Monument on '75 and '76 – together here in a single package from Omni! New Beginnings is Wilson's first for Monument is a total gem that doesn't fit comfortably in any one genre, which may have limited it's commercial potential, but it's a warm, soulful southern effort that deserves some love. Wilson has a deep, smoky voice, playing over arrangements by Bergen White that balance introspective sweetness with a bit of funky southern country rock. Title include "New Beginnings", "Lay Me Down Below", "Bertrand My Son", "The Truth Ain't In You", "Broomstraw Philosophers And Scuppernong Wine" and more. Let Me Sing My Song To You has even more stylistic range, from country funk to mournful, Waylon Jennings level balladry, to numbers sweetened by strings. Again, the songs are great, and make us wish that Wilson would have stuck around longer in the industry and gave us a bunch more them! Includes "Drowning In The Mainstream", "I Remember It Well", "Kindred Spirits", "Farther Along" and more. 20 tracks in all.
