The first-ever release of a great live date from pianist Oliver Jones – working here with a hip trio that features Reggie Johnson on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! Jones gets plenty of room to open up in the relaxed format of the performance – often using a strong left hand to set the rhythms going, even before the bass and drums come into play – in ways that do a great job of mixing bluesy undercurrents with some lighter, more lyrical touches as well! Titles include "Up Jumped Spring", "Blues For Helen", "Emily", "Round Midnight", "Snuggles", "Hymn To Freedom", and "Something For Chuck".

One of the greatest albums we've heard from David Murray in many years – a beautifully spiritual set that really reminds us of the promise we first heard in his music decades ago! Murray's working here with a lean, soulful ensemble that includes Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – all in a groove that has plenty of sharp edges, but which is also nicely inside – very focused, and with a sense of depth that's really wonderful! All tracks are originals by Murray – penned with the sensitivity of an older soul jazz recording – and two numbers feature lyrics by Ishmael Reed, sung by Cassandra Wilson on guest vocals. Titles include "Sacred Ground", "Transitions", "Family Reunion", "The Prophet Of Doom", "Believe In Love", and "Banished".

Thoughtfully-crafted work from Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures – a group who draw partially from the global influences of Rudolph's past, but also come across with some more angular modern jazz touches! Players include Graham Haynes on cornet and flugelhorn, Ned Rothenberg on clarinet and flutes, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – and other members of the group bring in a host of more exotic instrumentation – including oud, tarija, bamboo flute, and cajon – in addition to Rudolph's own host of world percussion. Tracks are sometimes quite sort and thematic, at other times more long and ambitious – and titles include "Oshogbo", "The Violet Hour", "Mood", "A Vision Of Pure Delight", "Cousin Of The Moon", "Scintilla", "Happiness Road", "The Sphinx", and "Walking The Curve".

Beautifully understated work from trumpeter Roy Hargrove – an open, laidback session that's easily one of the best he's done in years! Gone are the urban sounds of his RH Factor records, and the more cerebral modes of some of his other jazz sets – and instead, this time around Roy's hitting a warm, fluid groove with plenty of classic overtones and a wonderfully soulful feel! The album's one that would settle in nicely along some of Freddie Hubbard's best later work, and it features a strong quintet with Justin Robinson on alto and flute, Gerald Clayton on piano, Danton Boller on bass, and Montez Coleman on drums. Roy plays flugelhorn as well as trumpet, and titles include "I'm Not So Sure", "Strasbourg/St Denis", "Starmaker", "Joy Is Sorrow Unmasked", "Mr Clean", "Rouge", "Style", "Divine", and "To Wisdom The Prize".

A sprawling set that commemorates the Reggae Golden Jubilee– one that's beautifully put together by VP – and featuring 100 pivotal tracks from the early 60s to the late 00s! Selector Mr. Seaga does a pretty terrific job on the tracklist – which focuses as much on tracks that proved to be among the most trailblazing as it does on big hits. It touches on the styles and subgenres from throughout reggae's history – from ska, to rocksteady, reggae, dub, deejay, dancehall and beyond – with bellwether material by Theophilus Beckford, Higgs & Wilson, Skatalites, U-Roy, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Yellowman, Third World, Dennis Brown, Maxi Priest, Sugar Minott, Beres Hammond, Sizzla, Shaggy and many, many more. Key tracks from a really important time in Jamaican music – the wonderful rocksteady years of the late 60s, when the Kingston crowd were really coming with a unique groove of their own!
