new JonesesSugar Pie Guy (small slice, international, club, inst) ... 12-inch
Mercury, 1983. Used (pic cover).... $3.99 Out Of Stock
The Joneses' revisit their legendary 70s hit "Sugar Pie Guy" – and serve up the tune here with a few nice 80s club touches! The "small slice" mix has a nice bubbling percussion feel underneath the vocals – one that keeps the hook in place, but changes up the rhythm of the tune in a really jazzy way. The "international" mix adds in a few more beats and electro touches – and the "club" mix extends the whole thing out to over 8 minutes long!

new JonesesJoneses ... CD
Epic/Big Break (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A killer for the Joneses – probably their strongest album all the way through, thanks to some great production and arrangements by Bobby Eli! This one's got the group taking the fragile harmony style of their earlier records, and filtering it through the Philly powerhouse groove to create a stronger, more high-stepping sound. A good mix of uptempo groovers and a few mellower tracks, and titles include "Who Loves You", "In Love Again", "Groovin' On Ya" , "Music To My Ears", and "Rat Race".

Dyson's Faces — Dyson's Faces (1975 – pink cover) ... LP
Dimitri, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $2.99
Sublime spiritual soul from Dyson's Faces – a mid 70s east coast group headed by singer/songwriter Clifton Dyson, an ensemble that was equally well suited to uptempo groovers and mellow harmony soul! The vocals here are especially great – handled beautifully by the group with an earnest, honest quality that reminds us a lot of the harmony soul coming out of the Philly and New Jersey scenes a few years before, but which is presented here with a professional approach that only adds to the sweetness of the lyrics. Most numbers step along in a mellow or midtempo mode – with the vocals lifting beautifully up alongside full arrangements – and the more uptempo tracks hit kind of an ensemble funk style that still also works great with the group's approach. Tracks are all originals, and include the spacey "Wait A Minute Girl", which also has a great monologue – plus "We're Two Fools In Love", "Ole Jose What You Gonna Say Today", "Happy Days Again", "Welcome To All This Love Again", and "Don't Worry About The Joneses".
(Beautiful reissue pressing – with a printed inner sleeve and everything!)

Temptations — Puzzle People ... LP
Gordy, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A classic set of psychedelic soul from this fantastic 60s group! The record is one of the groundbreaking albums the Temps cut with producer Norman Whitfield – and it's a landmark session that perfectly showcases what Whitfield's full-on, guitar-heavy, bassy-bottom style could do for the group! A few mellow cuts hearken back to earlier days – but there's some excellent moments that really let the new sound shine – soaring out with trippier touches that are totally great! Highlights include the storming cut "I Can't Get Next To You", a trippy remake of "Hey Jude", the original "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down", and the haunting "Message From A Black Man" – one of the most righteous moments ever in late 60s Motown!

Temptations — Temptations Greatest Hits 2 ... LP
Gordy, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $4.99
During the late 60s, the Temptations career really started to take off – and the group emerged to become a landmark vocal ensemble with a groundbreaking effect on the history of soul and funk. Working with Norman Whitfield, they forged a righteous heavy soul sound that was quite different than that of their Motown contemporaries – filled with politics and social consciousness, laid out in a blend of heavy basslines and full fuzzy guitars that really kicked ass. This second volume of the Temps' greatest hits dips heavily into those key years – and it includes killer cuts like "Cloud Nine", "Ball of Confusion", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Run Away Child, Running Wild", "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down", "I Wish It Would Rain", and "Psychedelic Shack".
(Cover has light wear.)

Various — Eccentric Soul – A Red Black Green Production ... CD
Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 18.98
A killer collection of east coast soul from the 70s – work that originally appeared on a handful of different labels, but which was all put together by Robert Hosea Williams – an unsung producer working out of a small studio in Silver Springs – with an incredible ear for up-and-coming talent! The music here is totally deep and righteous throughout – the hippest of the indie label scene on the east coast – and work that really lives up to the progressive, righteous reference you'd get from the Red, Black, & Green in the title! There's plenty of group soul here – of a type that mixes older harmony modes with hipper 70s references – creating a really badass approach to soul music that's simply mindblowing – and way different than the mainstream variants that were hitting the charts at the time. The whole thing's great – one of the best Numero comps in years – and titles include "Phoney People" and "I Really Really Love You" by Father's Children, "Sleepwalking" and "Let's Do It Over" by The Summits, "Don't Worry About The Joneses" and "We're Two Fools In Love" by Dysons Faces, "Day By Day" and "It Must Be Love" by The Exceptions Featuring Mark Greene, "Town Called Nowhere" and "I Need Your Love" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, and "Summer In The Parks" and "Generation" by East Coast Connection.

Various — Spirit Of Philadelphia 2 ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
A tremendous follow up to the first Spirit Of Philadelphia collection – released many years after that seminal set, and with an even farther-reaching selection of music! The first Spirit set focused on the best mellow and midtempo soul efforts of the Philly International label – but this one expands the groove even more to show the wide influence that Gamble & Huff had on the sound of Philly soul on other labels – especially the major labels, who'd begun following the indie lead in their productions by the mid 70s. There's a fair bit of work here by bigger names at the time, but all of it's got a stone Philly sound – and is either work by artists who first sprung out of the Philly scene directly, or others from different points around the country, and who'd made a trip to Philly in the 70s to record in a hipper groove! Titles include "Do You Remember Yesterday" by New York City, "Falling In Love With You" by Jimmy Ruffin, "It's Not What You Got" by Eddie Kendricks, "We Got Love" by Ben E King, "Don't Take Your Love" by The Whispers, "Can't Accept The Fact" by Gateway, "Straighten It Out" by Anglo-Saxon Brown, "Midnight Lady" by David Morris, "You Make Me Feel So Good Baby" by The Temprees, "It's Love" by The Persuaders, "In Love Again" by The Joneses, "Let's Go All The Way Down" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "Walk Away From Love" by Jackie Moore, "I Don't Have Time To Worry" by Little Anthony & The Imperials, and "That's What Love Does" by Vince Montana & The Philly Sound Orchestra.

Various — Steppin Across The USA – Vol 2 ... CD
Steppin Muzak, Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy .... $9.99
Modern soul, R&B, and smooth grooves – the sound of the Stepper's scene that's been big in Chicago for years, and which seems to be having a bit of pull outside the Windy City these days! Tracks include "Rising Cost of Love" by Loose Change, "Sing A Simple Song" by Identiy Crisis, "The Joneses (12" Mix)" by The Temptations, "Sweet On U" by Lo Key, "Never Say Goodbye To Love" by Rene Moore, "Special Kind Of Fool" by Basic Black, "Mr Fix It" by Jeffree, "Love's Gonna Last" by Jeffree, "Don't Look Any Further" by Dennis Edwards, and "Don't Know Why" by David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks.
(Note: Some of the titles here were mastered from vinyl sources – but we've been assured that the collection is legit.)

new Oscar Brown Jr — Brother Where Are You ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of comments on the changes in society in the 70s, mixed with a few more heartfelt, personal moments too. There's still a bit of jazz in the mix – thanks to work from Seldon Powell on reeds, and Joe Sample on keyboards – and arrangements are by old friends Floyd Morris, the underground Chicago soul genius – and Sivuca, best known for his Brazilian music, but a great choice here to expand the groove. Brown wrote all the tunes on the record – and titles include "From My Window", "Like A Flower", "Brother Where Are YOu", ""The Lone Ranger", "If You Come Back", and "The Joneses".

new Dizzy Gillespie — Jambo Caribe ... LP
Limelight, 1964. Used Gatefold .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful original pressing of this great session that focuses on Diz's committment to Latin and Carribean rhythms. The set features Diz's great mid-60's combo with James Moody (on tenor and Latin flute), Kenny Barron (on piano and bass), and Chris White (on bass and guitar) – plus some added Latin percussion and occasional backing vocals by the group. Dizzy's sound is sparkling and shining, and soars ahead of the arrangements nicely – especially on groovers like "Fiesta Mojo", "Jambo", "Trinidad, Hello", and "Don't Try To Keep Up With the Joneses". Very groovy stuff, and packaged in an amazing gatefold cover, with very cool graphics, and a great booklet!
(Original deep groove stereo pressing. Cover has a light stain on front.)

new Elvin Jones — And Then Again ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet early date as a leader from Elvin Jones – one that has him working strongly away from a John Coltrane setting, with some hip arrangements by Melba Liston! Elvin brings in some excellent accompaniment from two other Joneses as well – Thad on cornet and Hank on piano – both of whom show their modernist tendencies more strongly here than in other work from the time – and the group also features great work from Charles Davis on baritone, Hunt Peters on trombone, and Frank Wess on flute and tenor sax! Most of the tracks on the album – such as "Azan", "Elvin Elpus", and "All Deliberate Speed" – are tightly snapping Melba Liston arrangements with a good mix of bop and modernist ideas, but one track – "And Then Again" – is a very nice improvised piece by the group.

new Various — Soul Of Disco Vol 2 – Compiled By Joey Negro & Sean P ... CD
Z Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive set of underground club – 2CDs worth of rare disco and boogie put together by Joey Negro and Sean P – with nary a familiar track in the lot! Both Joey and Sean really know their grooves – and they've gone way past conventional club for this package – digging deep for records that were rare even back in the day, most of which were issued on tiny little labels, and received little or no distribution outside their local scenes – making us even more impressed that two blokes from London could come up with such a good set! The style here is joyous, buoyant, and very much in the soulful spirit of the new work coming out on Z Records in recent years – a groove that's often topped by really wonderful vocals, and not just some lyrics cooked up in the studio. 2CD set features 21 titles in all – including a few rare mixes – and titles include "Disco Party" by The Escorts, "Maintain" by Steve Marshall, "Summer Groove" by The Joneses, "Sho Nuff No Funny Stuff Love" by Charles Mann, "Giving My Love" by Janice McClain, "Love To Live" by Moses, "How Can I Tell Her" by Curtis, "Come Down To Earth (David Todd mix)" by Choice 4, "Feel The Reel" by Adrenalin, "Keep Me Dancing" by True Image, "When Your Jones Come Down" by Sugar Bear Johnson, "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Gladys Knight, "Slide Into Your Heart" by Time Spectrum, "Man For My Lady" by Sabatta, and "Can I Take You Home" by Mel Shepperd.

new Various — Spirit Of Philadelphia ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Simply the best Philly 70s collection we've heard – ever! This one goes way past the hits, and moves into work from a variety of labels – not just the famous tunes on Philly International, but all of the Philly-produced gems that were coming out from other sources and other singers during the 1970s – a decade when the Philly sound had a golden touch that could transform the work of any singer into pure genius! The tracks on the set are really well thought-out – a sampling of work from a variety of different artists that you might not think to associate with the Philly groove at first glance, plus others who had their only really truly strong success through a brief link with the City of Brotherly Love. 18 tunes in all – and all of them warm clubby grooves with a perfectly smooth feel! Titles include "Look On The Good Side" by The Invitations, "Make It Last" by Barbara Mason & The Futures, "Good For The Gander" by Jermaine Jackson, "Stay With Me" by The Futures, "Who Loves You" by The Joneses, "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" by Touch Of Class, "Hurt So Bad" by The Philly Devotions, "Will You Be Mine" by The Whispers, "Now OR Never" by Little Dooley, "One More Time" by Dianne Steinberg, "Where It's Warm" by Revelation, and "A Little Bit Or Love" by Charen Cotton.
