Tia Fuller — Angelic Warrior ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 17.98
Tia Fuller's always a player who really grabs our ears – and an artist who always manages to work with a surprising degree of depth, despite the sometimes sexy look of her album covers! Take this set – which has kind of a "smooth jazz" look on the front, but burns with intensity right from the start – a soaring, righteous style that's right up there with the most soulful indie jazz around – served up by Fuller on alto, soprano sax, and flute – in a hip combo that features Shamie Royston on Fender Rhodes, Mimi Jones on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. The set boasts a bit of guest work – Terry Lyne Carrington on three tracks, John Patitucci on six, and Dianne Reeves on one – but the real star here is definitely Fuller – a wonderfully soulful talent, especially on the alto – and a heck of a great leader too. Titles include "Ralphie's Groove", "Body & Soul", "Lil Les", "Angelic Warrior", "Tailor Made", "Core Of Me", and "Simpli-City".

Tim Ries Quintet — Live At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2010. New Copy .... $9.99 14.99
A batch of long, extremely inventive tracks from the quintet of reedman Tim Ries – a group that features just the right sort of heavyweight talents to make the whole thing work! The lineup features Chris Potter on tenor, alongside Ries' tenor and soprano sax – plus John Patitucci on bass, Kalman Olah on piano, and Billy Drummond on drums – players that have some wonderful interplay together – enough to really open up some new spaces for themselves, but manage to keep things swinging as well. Titles include the Ries originals "New View", "The Last Kabbalist Of Lisbon", and "A Summer To Remember" – plus a great jazz reworking of "Death & The Maiden".

new Wayne Shorter — Footprints – Live! ... CD
Verve, 2002. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most adventurous records we've heard from Wayne Shorter in years – a collection of live recordings made in Europe in the summer of 2001, featuring a free-thinking group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The sound here is almost end-of-the-60s Shorter – as the tracks have an incredible amount of space, and might at times almost be dubbed "out". Shorter returns to his angular genius on tenor and soprano sax – crafting long, complicated lines that have a lot more edginess than we've heard from him in years! Titles include "Go", "Valse Triste", "Sanctuary", "Masquelero", "Footprints", and "Atlantis".

new Wayne Shorter — Without A Net ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great title for this Wayne Shorter set – given the free flights and soaring lines served up throughout! There's no need for a net, since Wayne's hardly likely to touch the ground – really loose and free right from the start of the album – less driven by the rhythms than pulling them along with his own boundless energy on tenor and soprano sax! But the rhythm players are plenty great, too – and definitely add to the sound of the set – with Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums – all players with just the right sort of boundless drive to match Shorter's imagination. The whole thing's great, less dark and obtuse than some of Wayne's other work of the past decade or so – and titles include "Orbits", "SS Golden Mean", "Plaza Real", "Flying Down To Rio", and the extended "Pegasus", which features a guest wind quintet!

new Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, & Roy Hargrove — Directions In Music – Live At Massey Hall ... CD
Verve, 2002. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
We have to admit, we had a lot of misgivings about this project before we gave it a chance and listened to it all the way through – but after all was said and done, we were quite impressed! While Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove and Michael Brecker all have the chops, recognition and reputations to make as many new recordings as they'd like, without resorting to pandering tributes, this project actually works beautifully and makes great sense. The group is rounded out by the elastic rhythms provided by John Patitucci (who seems to have graduated well beyond the sort of 6 string noodling he usually purveys) and Brian Blade. In most cases, we'd rather hear Miles doing Miles and Trane doing Trane, but this group manages to capture both the dark, brooding beauty of Miles' music and the deeper, soulful vein that Coltrane mined. Herbie sounds the best we've heard in ages and the highlight of this live set is a medley of Miles' "So What" and Coltrane's "Impressions", while the rest of the set is made up mostly of originals (2 more Coltrane pieces, "Naima" and "Tansition" are included) composed by members of the group like Hancock's "The Sorcerer" and Hargrove's "The Poet".
(CD case has a cutout hole.)
