JazzanovaUpside Down ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2011. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
Jazzanova upside down – a great little set that features rich reworkings of songs from their excellent Of All The Things album! The core album was probably the greatest thing Jazzanova had done to date – a richly soulful outing that featured some really incredible songwriting – perfect for vocals from singers like Jose James, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech, and Phonte – all of whom make appearances here. Yet this time around, the sound is taken back to Jazzanova's roots – that cool, clear style they first had back in their Compost and early Sonar Kollektiv days – a time when they were one of the most revolutionary acts on the European scene. The step backwards is actually a move forward as well – thanks to help from great collaborators throughout – in a lineup that features "Dance The Dance" remixed by Atjazz, "Little Bird" remixed by Alex Barck, "Let Me Show Ya" remixed by Henrik Schwarz, "Glow & Glare" remixed by Ame, "Lucky Girl" remixed by Neve Naïve, "Lie" remixed by Soldiers Of House, "Boom Clicky Boom Klack" remixed by Mr Scruff, and "Look What You're Doin To Me" remixed by Motor City Drum Ensemble.

Jazzanova with Band & Paul Randolph — Funkhaus Studio Sessions ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
One of the greatest records we've ever heard from Jazzanova – a set that really returns the group to their roots, and features live funk instrumentation, and ultra-soulful vocals from singer Paul Randolph! The sound is unlike anything Jazzanova's done in the past – even tighter, and more soulful than their excellent Of All The Things album – with a lean groove that's light years away from some of their too-electric moments from a decade ago! A number of tunes here are tracks from the group's more electronic years, but redone with much warmer live instrumentation –and the evolution in the music is mindblowing, with stunning results – a record filled with instant classics – as funky drums mix with jazzy horns, and set up a perfect vibe for the complex yet soulful sound of Randolph's vocals. Titles include "Little Bird", "Flashback", "No Use", "Lucky Girl", "I Human", "Let Me Show Ya", "Theme From Belle Et Fou", "Fedime's Flight", and "Boom Clicky Boom Klack".

new Various — Blue Note Trip 4 – Movin On/Looking Back – Mixed By Jazzanova ... CD
Blue Note (Holland), 1960s/1970s/2005. New Copy 2 CDs .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
If there's anyone we'd trust with a trip through the Blue Note catalog, it's Jazzanova – as the group have been a key force in the jazz-inspired sound of the global dancefloor for many years! This set's the 4th in Blue Note's "Trip" series – and it may well be the best, as Jazzanova really know their way around a groove – and manage to get way past the obvious in their selection of tracks from the Blue Note catalog of the 60s and 70s. The hits are pushed aside for some lesser-known gems that stretch out with a wonderfully fluid approach to a jazzy groove – mixing together fusion, Latin, and soul jazz influences with ease – all in a double-length set of tracks that features one mixed batch on each CD! 2CD version features the tracks "You Make Me Feel So Good" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Yu Yo" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Afreaka" by Lee Morgan, "Beatrice" by Sam Rivers, "A Time For Spring" by Nicola Conte, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Congalegra" by Horace Parlan, "Song Of Will" by Eddie Gale, "Hello To The Wind" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Morning Side Of Love" by Chico Hamilton, "Sitting Here All Alone" by Waters, "Quantrale" by Curtis Fuller, and "Baltimore Oriole" by Sheila Jordan.

new Various — Blue Note Trip 5 – Scrambled/Mashed – Mixed By Jazzanova ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2CD .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Jazzanova did such a great job on Blue Note Trip Vol 4, the label decided to have them back for one more journey – and this time around, they've expanded the range of their groove even more than before! In addition to the classic jazz from Blue Note that Jazzanova spun the last time, this collection also features a fair bit of soul, funk, and more – including some unusual bits from left field, all woven into a wonderful tapestry of music! A few of the tracks are even of recent origin, but they sit very nicely next to the older numbers – all stepping around in a spacious approach to the groove that shows that even when they're not making their own music, Jazzanova have ears to help expand other folks' tunes as well! Titles include "Warning (part 1)" by David Axelrod, "Three Is The Magic Number" by Bob Dorough, "Trying Hard To Look Inside" by The Waters, "Dedicated" by Digable Planets, "It's Just The Way I Feel" by Gene Dunlap, "Dindi" by Janet Lawson, "State Of Mind" by Raul Midon, "Chant" by Robert Glasper, "Sanfona" by Egberto Gismonti, "Hey Hey" by Andrew Hill, "Save The Children" by Marlena Shaw, "Open The Door" by Betty Carter, "Hurt So Bad" by Grant Green, "Montara (Madlib rmx)" by Bobby Hutcherson, "This Is Not America (interlude)" by David Bowie & Pat Metheny, "Secret Rendezvous" by Rene & Angela, "Mt Airy Groove" by Pieces Of A Dream, "Light Of The Universe" by Sun, and "I Love You" by Taste Of Honey.

Lou Blackburn — Complete Imperial Sessions (Jazz Frontier/Two Note Samba) (RVG pressing) ... CD
Imperial, 1963. New Copy .... $11.99
Pure genius from the hipper side of the LA scene – 2 rare early sessions from trombonist Lou Blackburn, both cut in collaboration with a young Horace Tapscott! The style here is quite hard to peg – a unique blend of soul jazz and modernism – handled with a key focus on unusual rhythms and timings. Blackburn's work on trombone is nicely matched with trumpet by Freddie Hill in the frontline – and the pair work together perfectly in a recasting of some of the modes explored by both instruments in the more mainstream side of the LA scene of the 50s. Tapscott's piano is not nearly as unbridled as in later years, but his presence here is clearly felt on the record – as there's a similar collaborative feel here to some of his later, larger, more spiritual groups. The albums are filled with great original tunes – and titles include "Harlem Bossa Nova", "New Frontier", "The Clan", "Scorpio", "Two Note Samba", "Grand Prix", "Jean Bleu", "Blues For Eurydice", and "Jazzanova". 19 tracks in all – and incredible throughout!

Various — Break N' Bossa ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1999. New Copy 2LP .... $16.99
The start of a legend – and a key compilation to document the rich reworkings of Brazilian sounds in the 90s global scene! The collection is the first in the legendary series – and has a wider range than some of the others – as Schema moves past just their own recordings, and incorporates some key sounds from other labels as well – a number of which are now out of print. Given that most numbers here – at least these mixes – were only around on 12" singles, the collection is especially essential – and filled with gems that stand up well – and really set the blueprint for grooves in years to come! Titles include "Atabaque" by Jazzanova, "Servus Mr. Bond" by Les Gammas, "Outboard Jeopardy" by Modaji, "What's Your Number" by Ian Pooley (remixed by Jazzanova), "The Will Of Life" by DJ Matsuoka, and "Galacia" by Rainer Truby Trio.

Various — Wizard – Rare Jazz Fusion Gems From The Czechoslovakian Vaults Vol 2 ... CD
Cosmic Sounds (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99
Excellent funky jazz work from Eastern Europe – very much in the spirit of recent compilations on the Jazzanova label, or similar sets on Cosmic Sounds. The album collects sublime material from the vaults of Supraphon, a hip Czech label that cut records so cool they're beyond description. The 8 tunes on the set are a mixture of Latin jazz, big band grooves, and funky electric fusion – but they all share a wonderfully fresh approach to arrangements, with modal bits hitting straighter jazz bits hitting choppy rhythmic grooving, in a blend so cool it'll have you digging through record shops for all things Czech. There's a lot of similar styles to some of the best 70s MPS work on the record – and you can also hear the influence of the music on some of the current European groove scene. Titles include "Presage" and "Wizard" by Jazz Q, "Memory" and "Dance For Two" by Gustav Brom, "Cubano Chant" by SHQ, "Dew Drop" by Kamil Hala & CZ Radio Jazz Orchestra, and "Wait For Me" by Milan Svoboda & Prague Big Band.

Expansion (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Soul sounds that work perfectly together – on a set that's maybe the most compelling of the Soul Togetherness series so far! There's loads of great contemporary numbers here – some nuggets from the underground, a few more mainstream tracks, and even a few mixes that really transform the tunes – making their key appearance here in CD format. The vibe is deeply soulful throughout – as the set's put together by folks who also have a strong ear for classic soul and funk – and titles include "Turn It Up" by Kenny Thomas, "Don't Give Up" by Aaries, "Taking It Too Far" by Big Brooklyn Red, "Don't Wanna Wait" by Lew Kirton, "Save Our Freedom" by Bah Samba, "Running Around" by Cool Million, "1960 What (Opolopo kick & bass rerub)" by Gregory Porter, "Woo" by Anthony Hamilton, "Let It Go" by Jazzanova, "Thinking About You" by Maurissa Rose, "Share My Love" by R Kelly, and "You Did It Again" by Soulpersona & Princess Freesia.
