Association — Insight Out (expanded mono edition) ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99
Fantastic dreamy pop! Despite the fact that this one yielded the super-huge hits "Windy" and "Never My Love", the album's also filled with great 60s pop tunes that you've probably never heard before – all as fantastically well-crafted and delicately strung-out as the big hits. The Association were truly one of the greatest 60s pop harmony groups to come out of the LA scene – and even a big hit album like this is the kind of gem that you'd spend years digging through rare vinyl to hope to find! Other titles include "Happiness Is", "On A Quiet Night", "We Love Us", "Reputation", and "Requiem For The Masses". This great expanded mono edition has 10 bonus tracks (!!!): "Autumn Afternoon", "Windy (Mono 45)", "Requiem For The Masses (Mono 45)", "Sometime (Instrumental)", "We Love Us (Instrumental)" and more.

Prince Lasha Ensemble — Insight ... CD
Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy .... $7.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me".

new Rod Levitt Orchestra — Insight ... LP
RCA, 1965. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Tight hard swinging big band set, with really complicated arrangements and some great writing. Not all of the players are names you'll recognize, but Levitt's talent for arrangement and leadership ensure a tight tight band, and the album wails nicely. Tracks include "Stop Those Men!", "Vera Cruz", "Insight", and "The Mayor Of Vermont Village". Levitt's always talked about in hipster musician circles. Get this and find out why.
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a spot of tape with a rip on the spine, with a bit of pen and WGN Library letters on the back. Label has a small sticker.)

new Zanagoria — Insight Modulation ... LP
Gemelli/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $31.99 Out Of Stock
Amazing electronics from the Italian sound library scene – a record that's far darker and much more moody than other Italian albums of the time – often with complicated tones and elements that rival more important modern electronic composers! Most of the work is relatively spare, and served up in an analogue style that rivals the best BBC Radiophonic material – although here, the passages are even longer, and have a bigger conception overall – with less of the feel that these tunes are supposed to be random experiments or sound effects. The material echoes plenty of Pierre Henry, or some of the Dutch electronic experiments too – and titles include "Su 60 Impulsi I", "Jazz Modulation", "Mono-Tone", "Diorama E Recitativo", and "Condensazioni I".

new Quincy Jones — Complete Quincy Jones – My Journeys & Passions – Photos, Letters, Memories & More From Q's Personal Collection (hardcover) ... Book
Insight, 2008. New Copy Book .... $12.99 45.00 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool book – not just a biography on Quincy Jones, but one that's filled with photos, letters, and other things from his personal collection – plus some very cool "artifacts" as well! The volume's put together like a mini-museum of Q's life – and features pull-out treasures from different periods of his life – little surprises that are hidden in envelopes and jackets, to be discovered as you turn the page – making the reading of the book almost like an archeological dig into Jones' rich career! The artifacts are reproduced wonderfully – record covers, letters, and lots more – all in full color, in this oversized book that's every bit as visually enjoyable as an old Quincy Jones record! 140 pages, hardcover – but with lots more inside to expand the page count too.

Freddy Briggs (aka Coldwater Stone) — Lost Soul Of Freddie Briggs – Defrost Me (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
GSF/Outta Sight (UK), 1973. New Copy .... $16.99
Wow, we knew almost nothing about this record! Freddy Briggs is the main force behind Coldwater Stone – as he wrote and produced all the tracks, and sings lead vocals throughout the record. His style's sort of a mix of funk and soul, and he works in the heavier style that was used by some of the other bands on the legendary GSF imprint – but also has a nice southern soul style in the best moments! Not as grittily funky as the Skullsnaps, but a fitting labelmate – and with a smoldering, geniune soulfulness that's positively killer – a record that's as rare as any other on the label, if not more so! Titles include "End Of the World", "Jefferson Park", "Outside Love Affair", "You're the One", "Biggest Mistake In The World", and "Without The One You Love". This excellent CD version from Outta Site UK packages the remastered Coldwater Stone's Defrost Me album with 2 bonus tracks: "Sound Off" and "I'm So Sorry", with credit and top billing to Freddy Briggs – with notes that provide some insight in the man that we simply didn't have before and we appreciate it!

new Oscar Brown Jr & Maggie Brown — We're Live ... CD
Mag Pie/ESP, 2001. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
One of the last albums ever from the legendary Oscar Brown Jr – a set that features the famous vocalist working with daughter Maggie Brown – in a setting that's one of the most jazz-based that Oscar's used in years! Backing us by a hip small combo – and Oscar brings a hell of a lot of personality to the tunes – those soulful inflections we've always loved in his lyrics, augmented by some spoken bits from time to time – and matched with a very deep, spiritual jazz approach from Maggie! The set's a great one – filled with great memories from Brown's many years in music – and many numbers feature this really great creative interplay, as other singers come into the group with the spirit of instrumental voices in a small combo. Titles include "Bird Chase", "Midnight", "All Blues", "Strongman", "Insight", "Young Jazz", "My Little Maggie", and "Brown Baby".

new Joy Division — YMCA 2-8-79 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Acme (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $22.99
Joy Division recorded live at The Prince Of Wales Conference Center, below the YMCA – and a pretty stunning document of the pioneering band's mix of raw intensity with heavy mood – in a rare live setting! It's a legendary set – one that kicked off a 4 night series of shows at the venue that also included Throbbing Gristle, The Teardrop Explodes, Echo & The Bunnyman, Scritti Politti and others. Joy Division brings an intensity that shows their roots in punk rock, but also hints at the moodier sounds to come. It's a soundboard recording and of much better quality than is often found in similarly captured performances by underground heavies of the era. Includes "Dead Souls", "Disorder", "Wilderness", "Autosuggestion", "Transmission", "Day Of The Lords", "She's Lost Control", "Shadowplay", "Atrocity Exhibtion" and "Insight".
(180 gram vinyl – in a textured sleeve, with color insert/poster.)

Tribe Called Quest — Low End Theory ... LP
Jive, 1991. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $16.99
The second album from the immortal Tribe Called Quest – one of the absolute essential hip hop LPs, and a record that should be an anyone's shortlist of the best albums in several subsections of hip hop – just a straight up masterpiece anyway you cut it. The album is so high up on the ladder, we're a loss to add any fresh insight o the critical consensus, so just get it. Classics one after another, steeped in bass note snapping, head nodding funk jazz beatcraft of the first order! Various — Local Customs – Lone Star Lowlands ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $18.99 23.98
Rare rock from the Golden Triangle scene of Southeast TX in the late 60s and early 70s – a well-curated overview of the stylistically sprawling material being cut at Mickey Rouse's Lowland Recording Studio in Beaumont! Texas rock of the late 60s and early 70s justifiably brings to mind acts like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Bubble Puppy – tripped out psychedelia in other words, but Texas is huge, and there was a heck of a lot more going on than just the best remembered cult favorites. The music coming out of just the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Texas "triangle" chronicled here was incredibly diverse. It includes proto TX boogie rock that's a clear precursor to early ZZ Top, harmony flavored numbers that sound closer to Cali than they do The Lone Star State, one track that somehow fuses CS&N with The Beatles and does so with prominent cowbell in the mix (and it's good!!!), punchy psych grit, and swaggering country rock with some twang in the strings that feels a bit more profoundly Texan. You don't need our word that The Numero Group has devoted some serious attention to detail – with a large booklet of notes, photos and histories, plus the impressive Lost In The Golden Triangle "family tree" of the regional musicians involved – as if discovering these long buried regional relics wasn't impressive enough already. Beautiful! 28 tracks on the 2LP version...6 more than on the CD! "Trash One" by the Lowland Studio Band, "Live My Life Today" by Insight Out, "Simple House" by Mother Lion, "Love Of The Morning" by Circus, "Take A Look At Your Friends" by Next Exit, "You Know I Love You" by Roy Briggs & Alton Tew, "Calling Me Home (Demo)" by Donald Thomas and more, plus the LP only tracks "Lizard" by Lowland Studio Band, "Let Me Listen" by Sage, "Groundhog Day" by Boot Hill and more.
(Vinyl version has 6 exclusive bonus tracks!)

new Sorry Bamba — Sorry Bamba Vol 1 – 1970 to 1979 ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 1970s. New Copy Gatefold .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful testament to the legacy of Malian singer, flute player and group leader Sorry Bamba – documenting his years leading the Kanaga Orchestra Of Mopti throughout the 1970s – and a great, vital release on Thrill Jockey! The region's musical heritage is intergral to Sorry Bamba's music, but it's also relevant and contemporary to its period and ours – with guitar, bass, organ and horns along with more earthy percussion. His style of songs is pretty amazing, too – and often done with a sense of humor that could be easy to overlook to outsiders – but there's no overlooking how great the music is. Beautifully done by Thrill Jockey, compilers Alex Minoff & Ian Eagleson – with input and insight from Sorry Bamba himself. Includes "Yayoroba", "Boro", "Gambari", "Astan Kelly", "Sekou Amadou", "Sayouwe", "Porry", "Aisse", "Bayadjourou" and "Sare Mabo".

new Wilton Felder — We All Have A Star/Inherit The Wind ... CD
ABC/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind".

new Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet — Illumination! (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1963. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way".

new Atmosphere — Overcast EP ... LP
Rhymesayers, 1997. Used .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Definitely up there with the best of 1997, this 8 track ep starts off with the amazing "Scapegoat", an interesting look at blaming the world, where Slug runs through a list of things that are causing strife in life. "Primer" has hilarious and insightful verses from the perspective of the dead-end life of a white trash trailer park resident beating up on his wife/baby mother with the chorus "I own the Camaro and the mobile home, so where you gonna go." "Multiples" is another highlight, a dedication to underground MC's, b-boys, graffiti writers, and DJs. Quality mid-west hiphop from the indie heydays.

new Various — Wayfaring Strangers – Ladies From The Canyon ... CD
Numero, Early 70s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet collection of early 70s female post folk revival material – independent and long lost recordings from unknowns that used folk and psychedelia as offerings to each singer's idiosyncratic muse – and another incredible collection of deeply sought rare tunes from the Numero Group! Numero really blows us away with their ability to seek out and lovingly reissue lost recordings – and package them in beautiful and insightful collections – and this one is as impressive as anything they've done to date. It features singer songwriters from sleepy midwestern Illinois and Minnesota, to the enlightened, heightened Bay, and points between and beyond – with songs from records originally pressed in runs of 500 to 5000. The thick booklet includes a page of notes for each artist in the collection, really rich stuff with photos, original single/album art, etc. The music is warm, groovy and sincere as can be, much of it surprisingly timeless! 14 tracks in all: "A Special Path" by Becky Severson, "Cricket" by Collie Ryan, "Sunlight Shadow" by Linda Rich, "Engram" by Caroline Peyton, "And I A Fairytale Lady" by Carla Sciaky, "Window" by Judy Kelly, "Dedication" by Mary Perrin, "Rain" by Marj Snyder, "Wildman" by Ginny Reilly, and a cover of the Stones/Marianne Faithful treasure "Sister Morphine" by Ellen Warshaw.

new LD Beghtol — 33 1/3 – The Magnetic Field's 69 Love Songs ... Book
Continuum, 2006. New Copy .... $5.99 9.95 Out Of Stock
A "pocket guide" to 69 Love Songs – the wildly ambitious mid 90s art pop breakout effort from Magnetic Fields – and possibly the most sprawling single project profiled in the 33 1/3 series! 69 Love Songs is such an ambitious project, they probably could have eked a 3 part series of 33 1/3 releases, but LD Beghtol does an admirable job here penning a fun print companion piece, rather than a "making of" or "behind the scenes" tome. He was also a collaborator on the actual album(s). He sort of profiles the language and culture that inspired 69 Love Songs more than anything else – and the book also has notes for each individual song with insights from friends and collaborators. A fun read!
