Phil Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass EnsembleKelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $9.99 15.99
An amazing bit of music – and an incredible document of generations of creative jazz energy as well! The legendary Phil Cohran teams up here with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a collective made up of Cohran's sons, who follow strongly in the rich legacy of his own Artistic Heritage group – yet in a very different way! Hypnotic Brass have caught the ear of many during their bright rise to fame – with a fluid, horn-heavy groove that's really amazing – echoes of Sun Ra and other Chicago creative legends – yet played almost entirely on brass instruments, which gives them an even bolder vibe. Here, working with their progenitor brings the group even more depth than before – an excellent sound that really spins things out wonderfully – percussion layered underneath the horns, solos taking jazzy flight, and an overall righteous vibe that holds things together beautifully. The album's way more than the sum of its parts – and those parts are already rich indeed – and titles include "Stateville", "Cuernavaca", "Ancestral", "Spin", "Zincali", "Apsara", and "Frankincense & Myrrh".

Hypnotic Brass EnsembleAlyo/Flipside (10 inch single) ... 12-inch
Honest Jons (UK), 2009. New Copy (pic cover).... $12.99
Massive work from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a combo who manage to pack more music into a 10" single than most groups do a full LP! "Ayo" is a romping groovers that has plenty of bumping bass and drum rolls on the bottom – then lots of the group's really wonderful horns on the top – a blistering blend of brass that stretches up from New Orleans to Chicago, where the group have roots in the world of the legendary Phil Cohran! The tune's easily one of their most grooving numbers – and it's backed by the even more beautiful "Flipside" – a slower tune, but one that still moves – and unfolds with a spiritual jazz quality that's really tremendous.

new Hypnotic Brass EnsembleBulletproof Brass EP ... CD
Pheelco (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
It always feels like we're waiting a long time for a new record from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – but it's always well worth the wait! This time around, they've found a way to focus their energies even more than before – still sticking strongly in the horn-heavy groove that we love, but also opening things up a bit more on the rhythm tip, too – and going for production that, if anything, makes them sound even more earnest, honest, and spontaneous than before! The record really preserves the live energy that makes the group so compelling – that razor sharp criss-crossing of jazz traditions and styles – steeped in a Chicago legacy that includes Sun Ra and Phil Cohran, but coming across with a hell of a lot more groove than either of them too. Titles include "Touch The Sky", "Kryptonite", "Pluto", "Black Boy", "World Champions", and "Starfighter".

new Hypnotic Brass EnsembleHypnotic Brass Ensemble (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 2009. Used Gatefold .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. The set features guest appearances from Malcolm Catto, Tony Allen, Flea, and Damon Albarn – but the real strength of the record lies in the group's amazing horns and rhythms – on titles that include "War", "Gibbous", "Alyo", "Ballicki Bone", "Jupiter", "Marcus Garvey", "Party Started", "Sankofa", "Satin Sheets", "Hypnotic", and 2 versions of "Rabbit Hop".

new Hypnotic Brass Ensemble/Salah Ragab — Tony Allen Reworks ... 12-inch
Honest Jons (UK), 2007. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
The best Tony Allen project we've ever heard – largely because of the work by both artists involved! Hypnotic Brass Ensemble take on Allen's "Losun" – but they play the tune anew, as if it were one of their own – in an amazing style that features stepping rhythms from the horns, and soaring solos that glide beautifully over the top – definitely the best illustration of the HBE groove we could think of! Salah Ragab provides new versions of the tunes "Ole" and "One Tree" – again transforming them completely from their roots with Tony Allen, and making the new tunes sparkle with a jazzy, exotic sort of groove!

Tony Allen & Others — Lagos Shake – A Tony Allen Chop Up ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $19.99
A long-awaited full length set – one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff – not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well – a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally – and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk! The choice of artists here is key to the set – as players from other Afro-influenced genres really take a new spin on Allen's music – and are allowed to strongly bring their own sounds to the set. Titles include "Ole (Cairo version)" by Salah Ragab, "Sankofa" by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, "Kilode (rmx)" by Carl Craig, "Awa Na Re (rmx)" by Bonde De Role, "Mark's Disco Dub" by Mark Ernestus, "Reggae Land Dub" by Wareika Hill Sounds, "Samba" by Son Palenque De Colombia, "Kilode (rework)" by Wajeed, "Ole (rmx)" by Moritz Von Oswald, "Fuji Ouija" by Diplo, and "One Tree (TP's spirit of unity mix)" by Terrence Parker.

Rocket Juice & The Moon — Rocket Juice & The Moon ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
Kind of an amazing collaboration – a core group that features Tony Allen, Damon Albarn, and Flea – with guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Fatoumata Diawara, M.anifest, Cheick Tidiane Seck, and Thundercat! The sound of the set is surprisingly wonderful – hardly a cloying collection of common elements in the trio's music – and instead a rich new territory that's almost a 21st Century re-invention of older Afro Funk modes! Allen's drumming is razor-sharp, and gives the record an acoustic energy that's really excellent – and Flea's basswork is astounding too – rough, rootsy, and really dynamic – in ways that have us unexpectedly complimenting him for his talents. Titles include "Lol", "Night Watch", "Forward Sweep", "Extinguished", "Rotary Connection", "Worries", "There", "Check Out", "Benko", and "The Unfadable".

Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy (pic cover).... $14.99
Amazing sounds from Rocket Juice & The Moon – a cut that features the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble working some incredible horn magic over the tune's dubby groove! The approach is almost like Kingston meets Lagos – with an instrumental vibe that's really wonderful! The flipside features "123456", which sports heavy drum work from Tony Allen – and "Forward Sweep", which blends more great drums with fuzzy electronics!
