Hugh MasekelaGrazing In The Grass – Jazz Club ... CD
Jazzclub (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $8.99
A decade's worth of magic from the mighty Hugh Masekela – a sweet little set that brings together some of his most groovy tracks of the late 60s and early 70s – in a collection that's overflowing with goodness! Hugh's got a style here that's unlike anyone else – an approach that's rooted in South African jazz, which is definitely shown in his rhythmic progression – but taken to new heights in the Californian scene, where Hugh's music came into contact with folks like The Crusaders and some of the other cooler cats on the coast at the time. The result is a sublime blend of jazz, soul, and African rhythms – with tracks that include "Sipho", "The Boy's Doin It", "Ha Lese Le Di Khanna", "Kwa Blaney", "Stimela", "Maesha", "Phatsha Phatsha", "Child Of The Earth", and "U Dwi".

Hugh MasekelaHugh Masekela's Next Album ... LP
MGM, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $5.99
One of Hugh's more poppy efforts, but still a nice batch of instrumentals with a good Afro soul groove to them, and the jaunty trumpet sound that was Hugh's stock in trade at the time. Tracks include "Actin' Like A Fool", "If I Needed Someone", "Sounds Of Silence", "Along Comes Mary", "It's Not Unusual", and "From Me To You".
(Cover has some wear.)

Hugh MasekelaJabulani ... CD
Razor & Tie, 2011. New Copy .... $5.99 15.98
Sweet South African soul from Hugh Masekela – a set that shows that Hugh's greatness certainly hasn't dimmed with time! There's a warm, captivating sound to the record that draws us in right away – a maturity to Masekela's approach – a depth that not only stretches back to his roots, but also seems to find a way to embrace other modes of South African music of the previous few decades too! Hugh plays plenty of his famous trumpet on the date, and also sings lead vocals on most titles – and tunes include "Fela", "Sossie", "Iph'Indlela", "Mfana", "Makoti", "Uyeyeni", "No Harvest", and "Scatter My Dada".

new Hugh MasekelaMasekela ... LP
Chisa/Uni, Early 70s. Very Good .... $5.99
One of the funkier albums by African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and a record that's filled with lots of short little groovers that have more of an edge than on previous pop instrumental albums – much more of the hard funky vibe of the Chisa years! The set features loads of great funky 45 cuts – including "Fuzz", "Riot", "Mace & Grenades", "Gold", and "Head Peepin".
(Cover has a cutout hole and light edge wear.)

new Hugh MasekelaPromise Of A Future ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good .... $1.99
Classic work from Hugh Masekela – and the album that pushed him over the top! The record features his version of "Grazin In The Grass", a runaway instrumental hit when it was issued – and a sly little groover that was based upon some earlier South African pop melodies that Hugh copped from his roots. The group's a tight little quintet with Al Abreu on tenor and soprano sax, William Henderson on piano, Chuck Carter on drums, and Henry Franklin on bass. The whole thing's great – and tracks include "Stop", "Bajabula Bonke", "There Are Seeds To Sow", "Vuca", "Almost Seedless", and "No Face, No Name, and No Number".
(Vinyl has marks that click on a couple of tracks. Cover has a cutout hole and a bit of light wear.)

Hugh MasekelaTechno Bush ... LP
Jive, 1984. Very Good .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
Overall, the sound on this album's very 80s, with lots of electro and synth moments poking through, and a very disco base to the rhythm. The best example of that is the big single, "Don't Go Lose It Baby", an awesome club track, popular with the deep house heads and loft scene here in Chicago, and elsewhere too, if we're not mistaken. A number of the other tracks have the same insistent pulse, but often with a more overt African influence in the sound. Like some of Masekela's other records, his trumpet playing takes a back seat to the vocals. Also includes "The Seven Riffs Of Africa Medley", "Motlalepula", "Getting Fat In Africa", "Pula Ea Na", "African Secret Society" and "U-Dwi".
(Includes the original inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

new Hugh MasekelaReconstruction ... LP
Chisa, 1970. Used Gatefold .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
We don't know what Hugh's trying to reconstruct here, because from our perspective, it seems like he's trying to forge a new style – a nice one, with lots of soulful moments, and a strong Afro groove on the best tracks. Some tracks have Hugh singing mellow soul vocals, and others have a tight jazzy groove with cool electric piano! Titles include "Woza", "I Can't Dance", "Make Me A Potion", "Sala Le Mane", "Traces", and "Leave Us Alone". Great players throughout, too – like Francisco Aguabella, Larry Willis, Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Arthur Adams, and Wayne Henderson.
(Cover has a cut corner and some wear.)

new Hugh Masekela & Others — Hugh Masekela Presents The Chisa Years 1965 to 1975 – Rare & Unreleased ... CD
Chisa/BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A decade's worth of groundbreaking funk and African rhythms – all of it recorded by Hugh Masekela for his legendary Chisa label! Back in the 60s, Hugh cracked the American charts with a playful version of South African jazz – but he was also an even hipper cat than you'd guess from his hits, and worked with a variety of incredible acts to expand his sound – a good number of whom ended up recording for Hugh on the Chisa label, in a unique blend of American soul and African inspiration that was years ahead of its time! The Chisa sound was one of the first true forays into pan-global grooving – and it brought the sounds of Africa to the American mainstream at a level that few had managed before. Some groups were unique projects done for record – like the Johannesburg Street Band, which featured members of The Crusaders alongside Masekela – but others featured a variety of ex-patriots living in the US, with key singers and players who shine brightly under Hugh's guidance. This set really digs deep, and offers up some of the most heavily African-tuned tracks from Chisa's catalog – 14 titles that include "Witch Doctor" and "Ahvuomo" by Baranta with Miatta Fahinbulleh, "Joala" and "Za Labalaba" by The Zulus, "Awe Mfana" by Johannesburg Street Band, "Macongo" and "U Se Mcani" by Letta Mbulu, "Tepo" by Baranta, "Aredze" by The Zulus, "Mahlalela" by Letta Mbulu, and "Afro Beat Blues" by Ojah with Hugh Masekela.

Afro Kelenkye Band — Jungle Funk/Mother Africa/Munchin Session/Too Bad Girl (2 x 7" singles) ... 7-inch
Cultures Of Soul, 1977. New Copy 2 x 7" single (pic cover).... $13.99
Rare funk from the Kelekye Band – material recorded after their legendary Moving World album, but never issued at the time! This amazing package is totally great – four tracks of offbeat Afro Funk, with an approach that's heavy on percussion, and topped by jazzy riffs that really complicate the sound – a vibe that goes way deeper than more common Afro modes of the time, thanks to the rich solo energy of the horns! Trumpet is especially nice, and works great with the vocals – especially when they hit a warmer 70s soul mode that almost makes the record feel like Hugh Masekela teaming up with The Blackbyrds. Titles include "Mother Africa", "Munchin Session", "Too Bad Girl", and "Jungle Funk".

Duke Lumumba — Jungle Funk ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Do yourself a favor, and buy this album – you won't be disappointed! The record is a gem all the way through – a really unique mixture of LA soul jazz and African rhythms, with a sound that's almost like Hugh Masekela sitting in with the Jazz Crusaders! Of course, there's a lot of Jazz Crusaders in the set – as Wilton Felder plays electric bass on the album, giving it a fantastic loping groove – but there's also plenty of unique albums on the record, especially its way of approaching the rhythms with a sly, syncopated groove that's immediately infectious! Duke's trumpet solos are great, and they're augmented by tenor work by Chester Washington and trombone by George Bohannon – all nicely grooving on the album's brilliant blend of jazzy tracks. Titles include "Jungle Funk", "Afrikaloo", "Akagruge", "Like It Is", "Mafam", and "Peace Brother". Somebody put this one on CD – and do us all a treat!

Letta Mbulu — Letta (1970) ... LP

Nice groovy Afro soul, recorded by Letta with some hip arrangements by Hugh Masekela. This record grooves much more nicely than her Capitol sessions, and includes some nice tracks that mix African rhythms with 60's LA pop soul production. Blue Mitchell — Bantu Village ... CD
Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1969. New Copy .... $16.99
One of the funkiest albums ever on Blue Note – a set that mixes the trumpet talents of Blue Mitchell with some killer backings from Monk Higgins – all in a groove that more gritty edges than the best funky soundtracks of the time! Higgins keeps the backings full, but always quite lean – fusing all elements together into a sharp, tight rhythm that steps along with some of the slight African touches you might guess from the title – a groove that's not really that authentic, but which resonates with some of the best inspirations that Hugh Masekela was bringing to American music at the time. And while the album might be an attempt to cash in on Masekela's groove, the feel here is really quite different overall – as tracks are nicely stretched out, with plenty of room for jazzy solo work – and a groove that's much harder overall, thanks to Higgins! Other players include Freddy Robinson on guitar, Wilton Felder on bass, Paul Humphrey on drums, and Plas Johnson on tenor – and titles include "HNIC", "Flat Backing", "Na Ta Ka", "Bantu Village", and "Blue Dashiki".

Larry Willis — Inner Crisis ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the few funky albums ever cut as a leader by Larry Willis – a super-hip keyboard player who's best known for his work with Jackie McLean and Hugh Masekela, but who sounds even better as a leader! This album's a gem all the way through – with a free-thinking soulful sound that's head and shoulders above the rest of the work on Groove Merchant at the time. Players include Harold Vick, Roland Prince, and Eddie Gomez – and the overall groove is an incredible array of soulful rhythms, played by Larry on electric piano, in a mode that makes the record feel like a lost gem from Strata East or Black Jazz. Includes the cuts "Out On The Coast", "153rd Street Theme", "Inner Crisis", and "Bahamian Street Dance".

new Friends Of Distinction — Golden Classics ... LP
Collectables, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
Fab pop harmony soul! The Friends Of Distinction were LA counterparts of the 5th Dimension – and at one time, members of both groups had worked under the name of Rex Middleton's Hi Fi's. Unlike the 5th Dimension, who were a bit more pop, the Friends Of Distinction stayed more in the soul vein – using the sweet harmony style they'd crafted earlier to work through some jazzy changes that brought a whole new sound to the male/female soul group mode. This 12 track set features some of their best gems, including the super-huge vocal version of Hugh Masekela's "Grazing In The Grass", and other great ones like "This Generation", "I Really Hope You Do", "Check It Out", "Honey Baby Theme". "Going In Circles", "Time Waits For No One", "Love Shack", "Let Yourself Go", and "I Need You".
