Joni Haastrup — Wake Up Your Mind ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 1978. New Copy Gatefold .... $24.99
Funky funky solo work from Joni Haastrup – an artist who's also known for his work in Monomono, and who sounds equally great on his own! Joni's got this tight approach that wraps together Nigerian grooves of the 70s scene, and some bolder soul star energy that would be right at home in the US – a kind of powerhouse approach that really sends these tunes home beautifully! The lyrics are in English, which really helps broaden the appeal of the cuts – and the production has these cool compressed elements that are partly like the more psych-inspired modes of other Afro Funk groups, and partly those of the UK soul scene of the 70s. We've never heard a record exactly like this, and the whole thing's a truly memorable treasure from this key moment in African music. Cuts include "Watch Out", "Do The Funkro", "Greetings", "Free My People", "Wake Up Your Mind", and "Champions & Superstars".

Various — Ivory Coast Soul – Afrofunk In Abidjan From 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Hot Casa (France), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
Massive music we've never heard before – a really heavy helping of grooves from the Ivory Coast – an African scene that's hardly been tapped by crate diggers and collectors! There's a really fresh feel to the grooves overall – not just the familiar Afro Funk modes, but a nice range of styles that moves between rootsy local numbers through some great crossover styles, through even a few of the African Disco modes that are better known from other scenes! The tracks here are all massively funky – scoured out over the course of a number of different crate-digging trips to the coast – and the package presents the music with great images of the original record covers, too – so that you can still retain some of the feel of the rarity of the work, even though the collection presents things in an easy to handle format. Definitely one for fans of Soundway and Analogue Africa titles – with cuts that include "True Love" by Rato Venance, "Yatchiminou" by Jimmy Hyacinthe, "Kalabuley Woman" by Pierre Antoine, "Mammy Nia" by Nguessan, "Wazi Doble" by Gougoumangou, "Zadie Bobo" by Ernesti Djedje, "Unite" by Moussa Doumbia, "Mon Falou Nan" by Soro N Gana Et L'Orchestre Guilana-na, "Onginwe" by Prince Dgibs, and "Essemon Moupoh" by Jean Guehi.

Various — Ivory Coast Soul 2 – Afro Soul In Abidjan From 1976 to 1981 ... CD
Hot Casa (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99
Amazing stuff – a stone cooker that almost beats the first volume of Ivory Coast Soul – and further mines the overlooked gems from the West African nation! The album's overflowing with groovers from the late 70s – tracks that often echo some of the Ethiopian styles of the time, yet have a groove that's almost even tighter – especially in the rhythmic commitment to funk, which makes nearly every number here the kind of cut that could easily cross over to an American funky audience too! They've really knocked it out of the park with this one – and the set's one of the best Afro Funk compilations we've heard in years – and is double-length, too. Titles include "Ye Man Noun" by Pierre Antoine, "Me Houe Gnon" by Okoi Seka Athanase, "I Love Music" by Sumo Brothers, "Wouck" by Nguenang, "Labazo" by Bony Castro, "Mansou Djouwi" by Houon Pierre, "Man Moeu" by Docteur Appia Morroh, "Kossopka" by Stanley Murphy, "Bravo Sotra" by Francois Lougah, "Ameniwa" by Assale, "Key Len Fece" by Wey Len Nobel, and "Onguindo" by Charles Atangana & Emitais.

new KG Band (Kiki Gyan) — Disco Train (LP & 7" single) ... LP
Hot Casa (Belgium), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A short, but totally killer Ghanaian disco record from KG Band – which is led and produced by multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan – and recorded at Lagos' Decca Studios in 1980! Disco Train is a rare one – with one long grooving dancefloor stormer per side. Each cut is a really sweet blend of global boogie, funk and soul – with distinctly African elements, too! "Disco Train" rolls beyond the 10 minute mark without coming close running off the rails. The drums don't stop and the bass is nice and funky – with some groovy falsetto vocals sung in English, a nicely vamping guitar groove, horns and Afro percussion. "Loving You" runs just shy of 10 minutes on the other side – and while the title of the song and the quiet opening seconds might trick you into the thinking it's gonna be straight and mellow, it's actually got a surprisingly adventurous groove overall! The drums are a bit feverish, which is a nice foil for the easygoing vibe and romantic lyricism – and it's again anchored by some funky bass, guitar and African percussion.
(Limited edition. Includes a bonus 7" single featuring a radio edit by The Boogie Gentlemen.)

Maria Joao e Mario Laginha — Lobos, Raposas e Coiotes ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1999. New Copy .... $5.99
Wonderful work from Portuguese singer Maria Joao – a vocalist who's worked mostly in Europe, but who's also made some great contributions to the world of Brazilian music over the years! The backings here are more adventurous than some of Joao's straighter jazz sessions – with large orchestrations by Mario Laginha, performed by the NDR Radio Philharmonic – often with a mix of modern tones alongside the warmer elements we always expect from Maria's music. The blend is sublime – and Joao's voice is even more pretty and fragile than we remember it – and it floats over the top of these arrangements in a beautiful way. Titles include a nice remake of "Asa Branca", plus Edu Lobo's "Beatriz", and the originals "Filhotes", "Viarias Dancas", "Chao", and "Uma Casa Com Gente".

Parliament — Motor Booty Affair (picture disc) ... LP
Casablanca, 1978. Sealed .... $19.99
Cool picture disc of the Motor Booty album, with a photo of George Clinton water skiing on two dolphins on one side, and a sketch of him fighting a bird on the other. Housed in a sleeve that lists the tracks on the album, but which doesn't have the same pop-up landscape as the non-pic disc version. Very cool.
(In the die-cut cover, with a small cut corner and a small hole in the shrinkwrap.)

new Parliament — Osmium (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $26.99
An insane bit of fuzzed-out funk! This is Parliament's rare first album – a trippy batch of tunes that come off of Clinton's experimentation in the Detroit soul scene, infused by the rock-heavy energy of the city at the time – and probably a heck of a lot of cannabis, too! The record is quite different than the slick funky sound of the group's later work for Casablanca – and has the psychedelic funk sound of the early work of Funkadelic, which was also recorded during the same period. The album's filled with funky classics – including "I Call My Baby Pussycat", "Little Ole Country Boy", "My Automobile", "Funky Woman", and "Nothing Before Me But Thang". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 7 more numbers that include "Red Hot Mama", "Come In Out Of The Rain", "Unfinished Instrumental", "Loose Booty", "Breakdown (mono)", "Fantasy Is Reality", and "Breakdown (stereo unedited version)".

Donna Summer — On The Radio – Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Casablanca (Japan), 1979. New Copy Gatefold .... $42.99
Ahh, the dancefloor soul perfection of the beautiful Donna Summer – and classic late 70s production by Giorgio Morodor and Pete Bellotte – songs that are played often, even to this day, but will never be played out! Was this the one that coined the phrase "shipped gold, returned platinum?" We can't remember, but whatever the case, it's one of those sets that used to be ubiquitous, but which now we can hardly ever find in good shape! Includes shorter mixes of "Love To Love You Baby" and "I Feel Love" – plus the hits for the album "On The Radio" and "Enough Is Enough". Other cuts include "Last Dance", "Hot Stuff", "Bad Girls", and a shortened version of "MacArthur Park".

new Brooklyn Dreams — Joy Ride ... LP
Casablanca, 1979. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brooklyn Dreams recorded in Munich and LA, but the album's got a surprisingly soulful club feel that almost matches its New York reference! Teutonic disco maestro Thor Baldursson handled the arrangements on the record, and we were a bit suspicious about it at first – but apart from a few colder electric keyboard parts, the main groove here focuses on the vocals of the male trio – and they trade leads and harmonize in a way that's clearly inspired by lots of east coast groups from earlier years. Titles include "Hot Lovin", "Too Much For The Lady", "Take Me Back", "Your Love's So Good To Me", "Love Love's Desire", and "One & Only".
(In the embossed cover, with some ring & edge wear, and a sticker on the back.)

new Giorgio Moroder — From Here To Eternity ... CD
Oasis/Repertoire, 1977. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic from the electro maestro – arguably the greatest American album from Giorgio Moroder! The set's got a great mix of disco and electronics that was years ahead of its time – and is surprisingly fresh and edgey, despite Moroder's fame over the years. Electronics are really at the core of all the tunes – bubbling, dipping, crackling around the groove – with only slight additional disco touches – and an overall sound that leans much more closely towards Kraftwerk than it does other work on the Casablanca label at the time. And we're really not fooling about this one – because it's got a raw electro vibe that still holds up beautifully, and which is more and more of a delight the farther we get from the 70s. Titles include "From Here To Eternity", "Lost Angeles", "Faster Than The Speed Of Love", "First Hand Experience In Second Hand Love", "I'm Left You're Right She's Gone", and "Too Hot To Handle".

new Three Times Dope — Original Stylin' ... LP
Hilltop/Arista, 1989. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Proof that Philly was well represented even in the early days of hip hop. 3XD are still part of the Hilltop Hustler's crew on this first album, and have the same sort of stripped down approach that you might expect from Steady B during the same period. Kind of like Superlover Cee & Casanova Rud both in their rhyme style, and that they were largely forgotten for a number of years, but have managed to finally get their due. 10 tracks in all, including "From Da Giddy Up", "Greatest Man Alive", "Original Stylin", "Funky Dividends", "Once More You Hear The Dope Stuff", "Improvin Da Groovin" and "Believe Dat". And a bonus for the sneaker fiends – some nice shots of OG Jordan III's on the back cover. Fire Reds? Yes, please.
