Lijadu Sisters — Horizon Unlimited ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1979. New Copy .... $11.99 12.99
A beautiful album from the Lijadu Sisters to cap off the 70s – and it's among their best ever! Horizon Unlimited is a nice blend of their soulful, harmony-rich vocals with lots of talking drum and electric bass in the mix – along with some other spacey soul touches! Their inspiration is as unlimited as the horizon, as they manage to brilliantly combine traditional and contemporary styles here – even better than on the preceding album – much better, actually! The vocals are as beautiful as ever, and the blend of classic-caliber Afro Beat with tight contemporary funk, pop and soul prefigures diverse global grooves for decades to come! Includes "Orere – Elejigbo", "Erora", "Gbowo Mi", "Gbalo Alogbalo", "Come On Home" and "Not Any Longer".

new Isaac Hayes — New Horizon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Big Break (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great later work by Isaac Hayes – working here in a post-Stax, post-ABC mode that has him forging a smooth soul sound that's really great! The album's not disco, but more of an extension of Ike's baroque approach to arranging – with subtle use of strings and keyboards, in a real Philly soul way. Not surprisingly, the album was recorded at Sigma Sound – which you can hear especially in the massive groover "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois)", a great long deep groove soul track that builds and builds over the course of 10 minutes. It's a great one, and worth the price of the album alone – but you also get the tracks "Out of The Ghetto", "It's Heaven To Me", and "Don't Take Your Love Away"! This Big Break UK remastered edition includes 3 bonus tracks: "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois) (Long Version)", "Out Of The Ghetto (Single Version)" and "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois) (Single Version)".

new Billy Hart — Enchance ... LP
A&M/Horizon, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $7.99
Pretty hip stuff from drummer Billy Hart – and a record that mixes New York loft jazz traditions with a warmer sense of soul jazz that was being forged by some of the players on the record. Players like Don Pullen, Eddie Henderson, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Dewey Redman, and Oliver Lake come together nicely – and the album's filled with original tracks that include "Diff Customs", "Layla Joy", "Shadow Dance", "Corner Culture", and "Pharoah".

Dionne Warwick — Now – A Celebratory 50th Anniversary Album ... CD
Blue Horizon, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 12.98
Dionne Warwick now – a surprisingly great set of contemporary recordings, done without any schlock or gimmick at all – and instead a really back to basics approach that really works well! Instrumentation on most cuts is relatively stripped-down, almost jazzy – which makes the set's revisited Bacharach & David classics come off in ways that are quite different than the originals, yet still retain all their charm. The album's also got a handful of new tracks too – titles written by one or the other of the team – and cuts include "Don't Make Me Over", "Always Something There To Remind Me", "Be Aware", "99 Miles From LA", "Reach Out", "I Just Have To Breathe", and "It Was Almost Like A Song".

new Karma — Celebration ... LP
A&M/Horizon, 1976. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Despite the fact that most of these guys participated in some of the best funky fusion records coming out of the 70s west coast scene, this record's not what it should be – especially when you consider it's got players like George Bohannon, Ernie Watts, and Oscar Brashear. Still, it's not a bad bit of pop funky fusion – in sort of a later Crusaders mode – and it does feature some vocals by Syreeta and Denices Williams. Titles include "Suite Syreeta", "Kwanzaa", "Well", and "Funk De Mambo".
(Cover has a promo stamp and some ring & edge wear.)

new Brenda Russell — Brenda Russell ... LP
Horizon, 1979. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful late 70s effort from Brenda Russell, who seems to have been left by the wayside, perhaps because her wonderful almost Free Soul approach to modern, sophisticated, mellow grooves never quite fit into the commercial radio soul realm, or the slow jam scene, though it veered close enough to them. The album's a sublime blend of understated production and arrangements wrapped around her own self penned tunes, including "So Good, So Right", "In The Thick Of It", "Way Back When", "A Little Bit Of Love" and "Think It Over".
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

new Seawind — Light The Light ... LP
Horizon/A&M, 1979. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jazzy soul from Seawind – breezing along with all the tight finish of their earlier work, heading towards more modern soul territory than before, but still retaining all the fusion grooves that inform their roots – kind of in a summation of the breezy style of the Hawaiian scene of the 70s, but more professionally put together than most of that state's indie groups. Pauline Wilson is on lead vocals – and tracks include "Sound Rainbow", "Follow Your Wind", "Hold Onto Love", "Free", "Imagine", and "Enchanted Dance".
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has edge wear, with light staining along the spine.)

Burt Bacharach — Living Together ... LP
A&M, 1973. Very Good .... $9.99
Quite possibly the greatest moment ever for Burt Bacharach – and that's saying a heck of a lot, considering the greatness of all of his work! The record's a slightly-overlooked gem from Burt's 70s years – a record that steps off the compressed sophistication of his best 60s work for A&M, but pushes things slightly into even more adult territory – a space that's beyond simple instrumental pop, and which features complicated rhythms, amazing songwriting, and a batch of tunes so great, you'll be coming back to this one for years to come! The record leads off with the sublime "Something Big", a building vocal number that always sends chills down our spine – then follows with the skittish rhythm of "Monterey Peninsula", almost drum and bass at times! Even the mellower tracks are great – somewhat soulful, and always touched with unusual phrasings, timings, or jazzy changes that are simply mindblowing. Other tracks include "The Balance of Nature", "Lost Horizon", "Walk The Way You Talk", "Reflections", "Long Ago Tomorrow", and "I Might Frighten Her Away".
(White label promo. Cover has a promo stamp, and some pen on the back. Spine has a spot of old tape & a small rip.)

Dazz Band — Invitation To Love ... LP
Motown, 1980. Very Good- .... $2.99
A killer start to the 80s for the Dazz Band – with great tunes in a funky mode as well as more measured group soul numbers – and it all adds up one of their best albums ever! Tunes like the opener "Shake It", plus "Shake It Up" and "Magnetized" bring the funkier vibes – with a vamping guitar, thumping bass groove, punchy horns, and top notch vocals from the group – while tunes like the title track and "Beyond The Horizon" have a more soaring arrangement of horns and some strings, still with an impeccable core groove. It's not as smoothed out in the production booth as some of their later grooves of the 80s – a total gem! Other titles include " Skate Lovers", "Carry On", "Do It Again", "Do It Again", "Sooner Or Later" and "Beyond The Horizon".
(Cover has a promo sticker, cutout notch, some wear, and creasing.)

new Ben E King — Let Me Live In Your Life ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1978. New Copy .... $15.99
Ben E King in a few different modes – all of them great, and a great demonstration of the continuing strengths he brought to his work at Atlantic Records in the 70s! The album features the work of three different production forces – Lamont Dozier, who serves up some sweet warm grooves that further King's great move to modern soul at the time; the team of Jim Stewart and Bettye Crutcher, who add in some deeper Stax-styled roots; and underground club genius Patrick Adams, who really makes some magic on one number! King holds strong in all these settings, and really rises to the top throughout – on titles that include "Wonder Woman", "Let Me Live In Your Life", "I See The Light", "Fly Away", "Fifty Years", "Spoiled", "Sweet Rhapsody", and "Dark Storm On The Horizon".

Livingston Taylor — Over The Rainbow ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good .... $0.99
A definite change for Livingston Taylor – and a record that has a much fuller sound than before! Liv's shaken off some of the folksier styles of his first few for Capricorn, and is going for a more advanced mode that features fuller backings from producer Ed Freeman – but still in a way that let's Taylor's cracklingly personal vocals come through quite strongly. The approach is never slick or too professional, but the added instrumentation and sometime backing vocals really do help Livingston push himself a bit more strongly here – in a way that should have gotten the record more attention back in the day. Titles include "Loving Be My New Horizon", "Pretty Woman", "Blind", "Rodeo", "I Can Dream Of You", "If I Needed Someone", and "Falling In Love With You".
(White label promo. Cover has a promo sticker. Spine has one spot of old tape. Back cover has WGN Library letters.)

new Azymuth — Crazy Rhythm ... LP
Milestone, 1988. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
While in the post fusion years when lite jazz was beginning to take off a lot of jazz and fusion artists got a bit lost, Azymuth continued to make a number of fine recordings, some of the best of their career. Bertrami and crew continue to groove along in their tight Brazilian fusion mode, with a spacious airiness and a wonderful modern groove. We especially dig the mellow grooves of "Tropical Horizon" and "Diza", while the acoustic and vocal number "Tempo A Bessa" is also quite nice. Also includes "Bossa Nova USA", "O Pescador" and "Hobalala".

new George Benson — George Benson In Concert – Carnegie Hall ... LP
CTI, 1976. Used Gatefold .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet CTI grooving from George Benson – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! In a way, the record returns George to his early years at CTI – particularly the album Beyond The Blue Horizon – as the set's got a stripped down smaller group, working in a tight blend of electric jazzy bits that's very nice! Ronnie Foster lays down some great keyboards on the set, Hubert Laws is on flute, and George himself plays a hollow body with a nice soulful tone – stretching out on some straight jazz on most cuts, but also hitting a few of his smoother notes from the mid 70s. Titles include "Sky Dive", "Take Five", "Octane", "Summertime", and "Gone".

new Loose Ends — So Where Are You? (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1985. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album from UK soul trio Loose Ends and the one that really helped them breakthrough! Like their previous album, So Where Are You was produced by Philly producer Nick Martinelli, but this one finds the group tightening up the groove into a more focused modern soul style – mid 80s period production. Dancefloor friendly, but with a focus on the tight focus on the traded male & female lead vocals and really strong songwriting – co-written by the group. Includes "Magic Touch", "A New Horizon", "So Where Are You?", "Golden Years", "Silent Talking", "Hangin' On A String", "Give It All You Got", "The Sweetest Pain" and more. This Soulmusic.com CD edition includes 5 bonus track – including a version of "Magic Touch" featuring Roy Ayers on vibes! Sammy Ayala — Sammy Ayala ... CD
Candela, 2010. New Copy .... $12.99
A great little set from salsa legend Sammy Ayala – an original member of the 50s born Cortijo Y Su Combo orchestra of Puerto Rico – singing warmly and wonderfully on this excellent self-titled set on the Candela label! An all star roster of modern producers and players indebted to Sammy and his style contribute – include Quantic, Nicodemus, Truth & Soul combo Bronx River Parkway, Mo'Horizons and others – but this feels like the work of an old school master, as it should. Timeless stuff and a worthy effort by all! Titles include "Otra Vez", "Invitacion Al Salon", "Corazon" feat Bronx River Parkway, "El La San Sebastian" feat Mo'Horizons, "Huellas De La Ilusion" and more.

Lo Borges — Horizontal/Vertical ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2011. New Copy .... $18.99
Lo Borges looks surprisingly youthful in the artwork for this CD – and his music sounds the same – every bit as fresh and personal as when he first sprang onto the scene with Milton Nascimento at the start of the 70s! As with other recent efforts, the songwriting is superb – as thoughtful as ever, and put together with a gentle sort of cohesion that really makes the whole thing shine – amazingly subtle, and still some of the most naturalistic material you'll ever hear from Brazil! Production is very much up to the task, with a timeless quality that makes the record feel like some of Borges' best material from decades past. Titles include "Antes Do Sol", "On Venus", "De Mais Ninguem", "Xanana", "Da Nossa Criacao", "Quem Me Chama", and "Cancao Mais Alem".

Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble — Afro Straight ... CD
Delmark, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99
One of the greatest albums we've heard from Ernest Dawkins in years – and one of the straightest, too! The set's got a hardbop fury we've not always heard from Dawkins – a tight, soulful energy that's spun out beautifully by the local group in the set – a lineup that includes Ernest on alto and tenor, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Willerm Delisfort on piano, Junius Paul on bass, and Isaiah Spender on drums. Other tracks add in bits of percussion, and Hammond on one tune – and while the music still has all the sharp edges you'd know from Dawkins' time in the AACM, the overall execution feels more like a killer Blue Note or Prestige date from the 60s – particularly in the interplay between trumpet and sax. Titles include "Afro Straight", "United", "Central Park West", "Footprints", "Old Man Blues", and "Juju".

Mauricio Maestro with Nana Vasconcelos — Upside Down ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $15.99
A contemporary set, but one that's unlike any other recent Brazilian recording we can think of – given the very unique vibe that Mauricio Maestro is going for! You might know Mauricio from his mid 70s work with Joyce on Visions Of Dawn – and although this set is a recent recording, it has a same sort of classic feel overall. The sound here has deep rhythms and folksy touches – a warm acoustic mode, but topped with some slight electricity and larger arrangements – a bit like some of the more creative sounds in the Brazilian underground during the post-Tropicalia years – yet with a richness that takes it much farther too! Maestro handled the arrangements, and he brings in a jazz-tinged quality that's not unlike the Milton Nascimento generation – yet the overall approach is earthier too, and vocals are handled by Mauricio, percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, and Kay Lyra – swirled up with a bit of light string backings that really help the record soar to the skies! We'd rank this one right up there with classics from the 70s by Joyce or Edu Lobo – but we also recognize that it's very much it's own record too. Titles include "Jungle Bells", "Agua Clara", "Canto Do Paje", "Todos Os Santos", "Ciclo Da Vida", "Ouvindo Estrelas", "Upside Down", and "Horizonte".

Ira Sullivan — Horizons ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ .... $6.99
A beautiful, and oft-overlooked, album of modal jazz tracks performed by Chicago jazz musician Ira Sullivan – who normally plays trumpet and tenor, but who also shows here his amazing talent on soprano sax! The album's quite different than most of Sullivan's straighter material, and some tracks have a great modal feel too – very hip and groovy, with some electric harpsichord on a few cuts too! Titles include the great original "Ninevah", a sublime version of "Norwegian Wood", and other titles that include "Horizons", "Oh Gee", and "Adah".

Sylvers — Showcase/New Horizons ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy .... $15.99
Two gems from The Sylvers – back to back on a single CD! Showcases is filled with great groovers from The Sylvers – a set cut when the group were firmly in their disco years – a great setting for their playful family-style vocals! In fact, moving to disco may well have been one of the greatest things the group could have done – because it really set them apart from the rest of the pack, and helped them find a way for their maturing vocals to really stretch out! Foster, Leon, Angie, and the whole Sylvers gang sound mighty great here – as they groove hard on their classic "Boogie Fever", plus other tracks that include "Ain't No Good In Goodbye", "Free Style", "I Can Be For Real", and "Ain't Nothin' But A Party". New Horizons is hard grooving work from The Sylvers – LA's favorite family soul act of the 70s, really burning strong here for the Capitol club years! The album follows nicely in the mode of some of their bigger chart hits of the time – using the group's surprisingly well-crafted harmonies in a playful mode that often has some nice uptempo dancefloor touches, but which still manages to lay back at just the right points for a mellow cut. The album's self-produced by the group, and titles include "New Horizons", "The Party Maker", "Another Day To Love", "Star Fire", "Any Way You Want Me", "Dressed to Kill", and "Lovin' Me Back".

Various — Funk Rock – Rock Breaks And Guitars For Funky People ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used .... $9.99
An excellent collection of funky tracks – with a groove that's slightly different than the usual comp! This set focuses on funky rock tracks that have been sampled over the past decade – moving past the soul and jazz racks to find some tasty grooves that you might have missed had you not been willing to expand your horizons further! And if the sound of the package might be enough to put you off if you're a funk fan, don't worry – because this one's filled with heavy beats, riffing guitars, and more funky grooves that you could hope to find in a van full of dodgy wax! There's a few soul tracks thrown in to open up the groove, but even those are far in the leftfield style. Titles include "Elegy" by Colosseum, "Down By The River" by Buddy Miles, "Tiger" by Brian Auger, "Vitamin C" by Can, "Aquarius" by Headhunters, "Life is Just A Passing Paradise" by Santana, "Indian Ropeman" by Julie Driscoll, "The Mexican" by Babe Ruth, "Yellow Sunshine" by Yellow Sunshine, "If You Lose Your Woman" by Zoo, and "Your Love Been So Good To Me" by Ruth Copeland.

Titles include "Afro Straight", "United", "Central Park West", "Footprints", "Old Man Blues", and "Juju".

new Jim Hall — Where Would I Be? ... LP
Milestone, 1971. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums we've ever heard from guitarist Jim Hall – a set of free-thinking, open-ended tracks that show him really expanding his horizons at the end of the 60s! The album's drenched in Jim's warm, chromatic tones – whether gently played on a few mellow numbers, or falling over themselves like cascading water on the more upbeat tunes. The record's got some great drums and percussion from Airto, plus piano by Benny Aronov, who also plays electric on a few tracks as well. Titles include a great version of "Vera Cruz", plus "Minotaur", "Simple Samba", "Careful", "Wehre Would I Be", and "Goodbye My Love".
(Original pressing. Cover has very light wear.)

new Jeff Parker — Like-Coping ... CD
Delmark, 2003. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty wonderful set of tracks led by guitarist Jeff Parker, one of the most enormously talented, and one of the busiest guys in Chicago! Jeff spends time working with a number of avant garde jazz and rock combos like the Chicago Underground Quartet, Aesop Quartet, New Horizons Ensemble and Tortoise – but steps into a pretty straight up bop-learned jazz mode for his first full length as leader. He's leading a trio with Chad Taylor on drums and some light guitar, and Chris Lopes on bass and a little flute. Parker's sprays warm, fluid guitar lines throughout that really light the thing up. It's really warmly captured by producer John McEntire, too. Tracks include "Like-Coping", "Miriam", "Days Fly By", "Holiday For A Despot", "Omega Sci Fi", "Roundabout" and more.

new Sun Ra — Sun Song (aka Jazz By Sun Ra) ... LP
Transition/Delmark, 1956. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99 9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any similarities to work going on in New York or LA – a voice that was all his own, and already quite boldly stated, even in these early years! The format might be somewhat familiar – an ensemble with horns and rhythm – but the overall execution really starts to open up as the album moves on – with odd phrasings, timings, and unusual moments that live up to all the promise you might expect from Ra. Even Mingus and some of his better-known contemporaries weren't heading in these directions in the mid 50s – and the record is a proud showcase of the freedoms that players were often accorded in the less-trafficked Chicago scene of the time. Horns include Art Hoyle & Dave Young on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone, Julian Priester on trombone, and James Scales on alto sax – and rhythm includes Jim Herndon on tympani, Robert Barry on drums, Wilbur Green on electric bass, and a young Richard Evans on acoustic bass! Titles include "Brainville", "Call For All Demons", "Transition", "Lullaby For Realville", "Street Named Hell", "New Horizons", "Fall Off The Long", "Possession", and "Future".
