A lost piece of New Jersey hip hop, with some excellent production by Tony D, around the time he was working heavily with Poor Righteous Teachers. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Our favorite track from the Likwidation LP. Spare beats with a staccato piano line throughout plus the sound of rolling bottles as percussion, with a great appearance by the late great ODB! 12-inch, Vinyl record
A classic electro groove – and one of the tracks that's a contender for the origin of the word "hip hop"! A very nice groove with an early Arthur Baker feel, and the kind of cut that we slept on during the 80s, but which sounds totally great today! 3 different edits. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Amazing production as always from Premier that works nice with the more laid-back flow KRS adopts on this one from the "KRS-One" LP. B-side features Das EFX. 12-inch, Vinyl record
An excellent groover from Love Unlimited – proof that neither they, nor Barry White, had lost their touch! The tune's got a snapping bassline that really grooves the track right away – pulling in some soaring strings, but still keeping up the beat as the vocals come in. The instrumental still has a bit of chorus vocals, but seems to add in a bit of piano to fill things out! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Includes "Girls" by The B-Boys, "Get Fresh" by PC Crew, "Jimbrowski" by Jungle Brothers, "Def Fresh Crew" by Roxanne Shante, "Wrath Of Kane" by Big Daddy Kane, and some beatbox skits from Biz Markie. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Includes "Rock The Bells" by LL Cool J, "Eric B Is President" by Eric B & Rakim, "Top Billin" by Audio Two, "Brooklyn's In The House" by Dr Fresh, "Rockin It" by Fearless Four, and "Latoya" by Just Ice. 12-inch, Vinyl record
The insane debut of Big Stick – a record that came out around the same time that Sonic Youth were really taking off, and Pussy Galore were first getting their feet wet – and a set that's as equally noise-filled as the early work of both! The group are a duo – John Gill on guitar and Yanna Trance on drum machine – and the sound is very spare, but very noisy – heavy beats that are almost hip hop meets industrial – colored with lots of freaky, fuzzy guitar lines – and topped with lyrics that have this offbeat sense of wit – all with an approach that's in that mid-80s moment when underground music and performance art were somewhat comfortable bedfellows. Titles include "Shoot The President", "Drag Racing", "I Look Like Shit", "Hell On Earth", and "Jesus Was Born (On An Indian Reservation)" 12-inch, Vinyl record
Two tracks from the Toronto hip hop compilation Mad Fiber, with Frankenstein, Kardinal Offishall, and Marvel on "Internal Affairs". 12-inch, Vinyl record
"Got To Be Real" is one of the most amazing tracks of all time. Not only did it bridge the disco and soul worlds at the time, but through hip hop sampling, it also became an essential old school classic. Still sounds great today, and it's a cut that we can never get enough of. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Canadian pressing in a pink Columbia sleeve.)
