new Rosemary Clooney & The HI-Lo's — Ring Around Rosie ... LP
Columbia, 1955. Very Good+ .... $4.99
Very groovy stuff! 12 jazzy duets between Rosemary Clooney and The Hi-Lo's, one of the most magnificent male vocal groups of the 50s. If you dig the Hi-Lo's as much as we do, you'll find the album to be a key addition to their catalog – as it features some great vocal harmony numbers like "I Could Write A Book", "Everything Happens To Me", "Coquette", "Doncha Go Away Mad", and a wonderfully nutty reading of "How About You?" Backing is by Frank Comstock, who worked with the group on most of their best recordings – so the record's more a Hi-Lo's album than a Clooney one.
(6 eye pressing. Cover has light wear, with a small split on the top seam.)

Hi-Lo's — Back Again ... LP
MPS, 1979. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A groovy late 70s outing from the Hi Los – done at the same time that group member Gene Puerling was having a great run for MPS with his group The Singers Unlimited! The style here's a bit like the Hi Los of old, but it's also got some of the smoother, sweeter tones that Puerling developed with the Singers Unlimited – that near-perfect approach to sound, with the vocals wrapped up nicely in pure harmonic bliss! Backings are directed by Rob McConnell, and vocal arrangements are by Puerling – on titles that include "Misty", "Everything Must Change", "I Remember You", "Seems Like Old Times", and "When Sunny Gets Blue".
(US pressing on Pausa records.)

new Hi-Lo's — Listen To The Hi-Lo's ... CD
Starlite/El (UK), 1954. New Copy .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
The first-ever album from the legendary Hi-Lo's – a landmark indie debut that went onto transform the sound of vocal harmony in the 20th century! The record's got a subtle brilliance that's hard to catch at first – a way of putting together the tunes that's often only slightly different than some of the group's contemporaries, but which already shows the rich talents that leader Gene Puerling would bring to later vocal experiments with Singers Unlimited in the 70s. As with most of the group's famous records, backings here are by Frank Comstock – perfectly poised on the gentle tunes, and nicely jazzy on the more swinging ones! Titles include "June in January", "Little White Lies", "I Don't Want to Cry Anymore", "She's Funny that Way", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Island of Desire", "You Brought a New Kind Of Love", "Fools Rush In", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Where Are You", and "You Can't Hardly Get Them No More".

Nelson Angelo — Caterete ... CD
Adventure Music, 2000/2003. Used .... $1.99
A pretty darn great record from Brazilian singer and guitarist Nelson Angelo – an artist we haven't heard from since his early 70s album with Joyce! Angelo clearly hasn't missed a beat in the time that's gone by – and he's working here in a compelling mode that blends small combo instrumentation with adventurous songwriting – but which also has lots of jazzy touches in the phrasing of the vocals and instruments. There's a lightly breezy feel to some of the best tracks – reminding us almost of early Ivan Lins at his best – but the album also has a more personal approach that comes through in most of Angelo's original compositions. Titles include "Lingerinho", "Caterete", "Delirios Do Mar", "Radio Universe Pedal", "Vera's Frevo", and "Trombone".

Nina Becker & Marcello Callado — Gambito Budapeste ... CD
YB Music (Brazil), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
Great contemporary sounds from Brazil – a collaboration between Nina Becker and Marcelo Callado – done with a really playfully creative feel! Nina's sung recently with Orquesta Imperial, and Marcelo's the drummer in Caetano Veloso's recent group – and the record definitely has echoes of both of those worlds – very creative songwriting, thoughtful interplay between acoustic and electric instrumentation, and a freshly crispy sensibility on the production – which keeps a gentle edge to most of the tunes. Titles include "Cade Voce", "Blues", "Futuro", "Nuvem", "Packing To Leave", and "Essa Menina".

Celly Campello — Estupido Cupido (6CD set) ... CD
EMI/Discobertas (Brazil), 1959/1960/1961/1968. New Copy 6 CDs .... $72.99
A wealth of early work from the lovely Celly Campello – one of the biggest girl pop icons in the Brazilian scene of the 60s! Celly's work is more inspired by American rock and roll than previous Brazilian styles – and as such, these records are a crucial part in the formation of the jovem guarda sound of the pre-Tropicalia years – the bright, bouncy approach to Brazilian music that's perfectly summed up in the sounds of Celly! The package features six full albums from Campello's years at EMI/Odeon – the classic Estupido Cupido (1959), plus Broto Certinho (1960), A Bonequinha Que Canta (1960), A Graca De Celly Campello E As Musicas De Paul Anka (1961), Brotinha Encantador (1961), and the compelling Celly album from 1968 – which shows a surprising maturation of her style. All packaged in a sweet slipcover – with bonus tracks too!

June Christy — Something Cool (Mono & Stereo) ... CD
Capitol, 1953. Used .... $4.99
From its booze-soaked title cut, to its haunting selection of lonely ballads like "Midnight Sun" and "Stranger Called The Blues", this is one of the most fantastic vocal jazz albums of all time – and a record that we'd recommend instantly to anyone! June Christy has an incredibly icy tone on the record, filled with sorrow, regret, and loneliness – all of which are amplified even more deeply by Pete Rugolo's eerie, off-kilter arrangements. Titles include "Something Cool", "It Could Happen To You", "Lonely House", "I'm Thrilled", and "The Night We Called It A Day". Plus, this special CD reissue features the mono and stereo recordings of the album – completely different ones, as the album was originally recorded in mono in 1954, and completely re-recorded again with the same arrangements in 1960!

Criolo — No Na Orelha ... CD
Sterns (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
A really compelling blend of sounds – and a set that's billed as a hip hop album, but which is way way more than that – more a wonderful hybrid of global styles, all wrapped up with the crispness of the contemporary Brazilian underground! The set begins with a number that's straight out Afro Funk, the rolls into tracks that really run the gamut – a hip hop number or two, other African styles, and most especially, some of those cool genre-defying moments that we've really come to love from Brazil in recent years. Criolo's vocals are wonderful, especially when he's singing – with a warmth that takes us back to singers of the samba soul generation – and titles include "Bogota", "Mario", "Subirusdoistiozin", "Linha De Frente", "Lion Man", "Sucrilhos", and "Samba Sambei".

new Sandra Feva — Need To Be ... LP
Venture, 1979. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A great little record from this little-known singer! The record was recorded in New Jersey with arrangements by Tony Camillo, but the sound often has strong echoes of the south – not in a gritty way, but in the warmer, more sophisticated modes that were creeping into southern soul at the end of the 70s. The blend of Camillo's full east cost leanings and some of these rootsier elements gives the record a nice degree of depth – and titles include "If You Want It You Got It", "Choking Kind", "Need To Be", "Pain In My Heart Medley", "Expressway To Your Heart", "Love To Be Your Woman", and "Love Me For What I Am".

Dizzy Gillespie — New Wave/On The French Riviera ... CD
Philips/Universal (Germany), 1962. New Copy .... $13.99
60s cookers from Dizzy Gillespie – back to back on a single CD! New Wave is a lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and Charlie Ventura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". On The French Riviera isn't really French, but actually a killer batch of Latiny tinged tracks from Dizzy & Co – with with great arrangements by Lalo Schifrin! There's a wonderful 10 minute version of "Chega De Saudade", done as "No More Blues" to start it out, and it's got a great loping Latin vibe, in the manner of Dizzy's best sides from the 60s. Lalo's on piano, and the great Leo Wright is on flute and alto, with Tzigane Elek Bacsik on guitar, Chris White on bass, Ruby Collins on drums and Pepitoo Riestria on percussion. Other nice ones include "Long Long Summer", "Desafinado", and "Pau De Arara". A great album, and one not to pass up!

Gladys Knight & The Pips — I Feel A Song ... LP
Buddah, 1974. Very Good+ .... $0.99
Rock-solid Buddah work from Gladys Knight & The Pips – still pretty righteous on the vocal tip, but often a bit fuller and more polished than before! Knight shows a great talent for a mature ballad here – no big hits, but that's part of the charm of the set – as there's a personal, intimate quality to the tunes that also comes from the less-familiar nature of the lyrics. A few more tunes get a bit uptempo – to be expected when Tony Camillo's helping with production and arrangements – and the album features the great sample cut "Don't Burn Down The Bridge", plus the tracks "I Feel A Song", "Seconds", "Love Finds Its Own Way", "Better Go Your Way", "The Goings Up & The Comings Down", "Tenderness Is His Way", and "The Need To Be".

Ledisi — Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue ... CD
LeSun, 2001. New Copy .... $13.99
Killer work from Ledisi – one of the best underground soul singers alive! This album has Ledisi opening up her bag a lot from her Soulsinger debut – moving into some more jazz-based material, sung with a sweet mellow vibe that still retains all the soulfulness of earlier work, yet which also has her using some more complicated phrasing, more sophisticated modes, and great backings that really help the set groove! As with Soulsinger, this one's got some great electric piano at the core of most of the cuts – and the tracks are a mix of originals by Ledisi, plus some surprisingly great versions of jazz standards, done in a way that's very different than any other vocal interpretations of them we've ever heard. Originals include "Meeting Marcus On A Thursday", "I've Got It", "So Right", "Land Of The Free", "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue", and "If You Go" – plus great covers of "Autumn Leaves", "Straight No Chaser", "Round Midnight", and "Sugar", done in a medley with D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar"!

David Liebman — Lookout Farm ... LP
ECM, 1973. Very Good+ .... $11.99
A great example of the sound of ECM in the early 70s, with Liebman playing in his post-Miles band angular modernist style with warm electric and acoustic accompaniment from Richard Beirach, Frank Tusa and Jeff Williams rounding out the quartet . The set is made up of three long, spiralling numbers, with the players intersecting and weaving together their lines, blurring the difference between solos, group improvisation and head melodies, and there's a large host of guest players, including John Abercrombie, Don Alias and Badal Roy. Titles include "Pablo's Story", "Sam's Float" and "MD/Lookout Farm".
(US pressing. Cover has some wear & a stained corner.)

Major Lazer — Free The Universe ... CD
Secretly Canadian, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99
Diplo's back as Major Lazer – which is now a full-fledged all star project – and still steeped in big, boundary-busting, floor-shaking dancehall influences – with appearances by Santigold, Bruno Mars, Vybes Kartel, Amber from Dirty Projectors, Elephant Man, Wyclef, Shaggy, Opal, Ms. Dynamite, Flux Pavilion and more! There's a real love for genuine digital dancehall and diverse avant dancefloor, but with some tricked out atmosphere all its own and wildly unpredictable, yet still infection vibe that's pure Diplo. Titles include "You're No Good", "Jet Blue Jet", "Jah No Partial", "Scare Me", "Jessica", "Keep Cool", "Sweat", "Bubble Butt", "Reach For The Stars", "Mashup The Dance", "Watch Out For This (Bumaye)", "Playground" and more.

Louis Moholo — Bra Louis Bra Tebs/Spirits Rejoice ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1978/1995. New Copy 2CDs .... $19.99
A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Utshaka", "Maybe Of Cause", "Moegoe", "Sonke", and "Lakutshona Ilanga".

Louis Moholo & Alexander Hawkins — Keep Your Heart Straight ... CD
Ogun (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99
A smashing set of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a set that shows that after all these years, he's still a richly creative talent on his instrument! The album has Louis duetting with pianist Alexander Hawkins – a younger player who'd caught his ear a few years before, and who turns out to be a perfect partner for the record – graced with just the right kind of free-thinking, yet spiritual elements as Moholo's own music – able to stretch out strongly with a lot of freedom, yet never lose sight of the overarching goal! The tracks are all long and open – and almost recall some of the interplay between Moholo and Chris McGregor in years back – especially some of the freer work on the 70s London scene. The album's a beautiful extension of the Ogun Records tradition – and titles include "Lakutshon Ilanga", "Hear Our Hearts", "Heavy Manners", "Amaxesha Osizi", "If I Should Lose You", "Pure Vision", and "Catch You On The Rebound".

Louis Moholo's Viva La Black — Freedom Tour – Live In South Africa 1993 ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1993. New Copy .... $14.99
An incredibly spiritual session from percussionist Louis Moholo and his ensemble Viva La Black – recorded on the occasion of a series of concerts in Moholo's homeland of South Africa – and done in a way that's as much a document of the group's trip as it is a recording of the music in the concerts. Many of the tracks are shorter passages that flow together with longer ones – piecing together the warm spirit and soulful expression allowed to the group during the tour. And the music itself shares in a heritage that runs back through the 60s work of Mingus and Roland Kirk, the 70s experiments of the AACM, and the rich jazz-in-exile work of Moholo himself! Instrumentation includes percussion, trumpet, saxes, piano, and bass – plus vocals from all the members of the group – and titles include "Use Less Sugar & Stir Like Hell", "Volunteered Slavery", "Woza", "Nikosi", "End Of Man", "Dudu P", "I'll Look All Over Afrika For You", "Drum Choir", and "Joyful Noise".

new Augustus Pablo — King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown (3 x 10" vinyl set) ... LP
Yard Music/Get On Down, 1975. New Copy 3 x 10 Inch (reissue).... $26.99 29.98
Truly, truly one of the most essential reggae albums of all time, and without a doubt one of our top dub albums. While we may be known for our hyperbolic comments on LPs here at Dusty, this album is very much deserving of the praise, and if you don't own it, you need to. Basically a collection of dubs of rhythms for some of Pablo's most popular productions as vocal cuts on 45s that had rocked the sound systems, this set features a mighty rockers rhythm team and mixing courtesy Errol Thompson and King Tubby. Includes "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub" "Satta Dub" and "Frozen Dub". new Othello Robertson/Steve Flanagan — So In Luv/I've Arrived ... 7-inch
Era/Outta Sight (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $7.99
A great blast of horns starts things out on "So In Love" – then Othello's vocals soar right over the groove – really finding the right sort of way to step along with the complicated bassline of the rhythm, all without every losing her cool! Steve Flanagan sounds great on "I've Arrived" – an unusual tone that has this chugging rhythm that's a mighty nice fit for the dark, deep, echoey mode used to record the vocals!

Carlo Rustichelli — Rosamunda E Alboino ... CD
Sugar/Digitmovies (Italy), 1961. New Copy .... $19.99
Plenty of drama here – in a vintage Italian peplum soundtrack from the great Carlo Rustichelli! Carlo's a composer who really knows how to bring a lot of feeling into his music – and here, he's definitely at the height of that power – scoring things with colors and tones so vivid, you almost don't need the images on the screen to tell what's going on! Some tunes have this dramatic progression that's almost narrative in scope – others move slower, as if Rustichelli's painting a musical picture of the backdrop for the movie. Reissue includes a whopping 28 tracks in all – all beautifully remastered!

Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer — Gingerbread Men ... LP
Mainstream, Mid 60s. Very Good .... $4.99
The team of Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer shouldn't work so well together – but although Terry's always been an optimist, and Brookmeyer's had a history as a modernist, the pair cut some great records together! This set's one of the best of a short run the Terry/Brookmeyer group cut for Mainstream in the mid 60s – a quintet session with Hank Jones on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – all players creative enough to match the playful spirit of the leaders, muting their rhythms one minute, and grooving them up the next! The mix of Terry's flugelhorn and Brookmeyer's trombone is especially great – a breathy approach to the horn parts that still swings hard, but with a fluid grace that's more pulsating than punctuating. Titles include a great version of Gary McFarland's "Milo's Other Samba", Jimmy Heath's "Gingerbread Boy", and the titles "Haig & Haig", "My Gal", "Naptown", and "Morning Mist".
(White label promo. Cover has some wear and a Demonstration stamp on back.)

Yello — You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess ... LP
Mercury, 1983. Very Good+ .... $11.99
The first rumblings of the pop genius in Yello's music – a record that still has all the best quirky electronics of their first two sets, but which also focuses that energy into a sound that's often more direct and oddly hook-oriented on the best numbers! There's a really percussive vibe going on here – a quality that makes the album almost more darkly rhythmic than other efforts, but which also pushes some tunes ahead with quite a sense of drive – mixing early samples, analogue electronics, and Dieter Meier's always-great vocals into a sound that's still better than many of the countless groups who sprung up in Yello's wake. Titles include "I Love You", "Swing", "Heavy Whispers", "Crash Dance", "Lost Again", "Smile On You", "Pumping Velvet", and "Salut Mayoumba".

new Dave Brubeck — Time Out ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Very Good- .... $13.99 Just Sold Out!
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks".
(6 eye stereo pressing, with deep groove. Vinyl has some marks that click on a couple of tracks. Cover has the remnants of a sticker, some small marks on the front, stained corner, and a small center split on the bottom seam.)

Gang Colours — Keychain Collection ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 Just Sold Out!
Melodic and atmospheric sounds from Gang Colours – fragile and tuneful material that’s somewhat of a surprise from the Brownswood label! I guess we shouldn't really think of what Gang Colours does here as that much of a departure for the label, given their unpredictable oeuvre is never all that easy to pigeonhole, yet it still caught us off guard – in the best kind of way. Piano and synth float over intermittently spare and busier beats, vocals and textural waves of sound. What really sets it apart is the mood – we don't want to call it somber, but it's definitely got a haunting feel! Includes "Heavy Petting", "Forgive Me?", "To Repel Ghosts", "Pebble Dash", "Tissues & Fivers", "Botley In Bloom", "Fancy Restaurant", "On Compton Bay", "Rollo's Ivory Tale" and more.

Excellent early west coast material – and some of the greatest work that Shorty Rogers ever put on record! Unlike some of Rogers' other sides for RCA, which were often a bit gimmicky or strangely-themed, this one's a straight grooving session of west coast jazz, played by some of the finest players in LA, all arranged by Rogers with the kind of razor sharp precision that made him one of the city's most exciting talents in the early days. Try this one – a great record that takes off from the concept of the first, but which goes in some very fresh new directions – using the same great group with Paul Desmond on alto, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums! Dave's still working out some nutty time signatures here – but apart from the science, the thing that really makes the record cook is Desmond's alto – icy, edgey, floating, and always a treat – almost even more amazing in the space of some of these offbeat numbers. new Manu Dibango — Kusini ... LP
Delta Sigma Theta, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of rare funk from Manu Dibango – originally scored for a film that starred Greg Morris, Ruby Dee, and Ossie Davis – but every bit as funky as Manu's own work of the time! The tunes are all very firmly in the best style of his earliest work of the 70s, with loads of great rhythms and choppy instrumentation – some tracks in the upbeat "Soul Makossa" mode, but others in a slower, snakier, funkier mode – one that he wasn't showing much on other studio albums by the end of the 70s. The whole thing's great – and just when we thought we knew everything there was to love about Manu Dibango, we turn up this sweet little gem from the 70s! Titles include "Go Slow Streets", "Motapo", "Jam Session", "Bokolo's Boogie", "Marnie", "Liberations Song", and "Blowin Western Mind".

new Pseudo Intellectuals — Resourceful Illery (180 gram vinyl with bonus 45) ... LP
Lo Do, 2008. New Copy 2LP & 7 Inch .... $28.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Solid jazzy hip hop from Buffalo's Pseudo Intellectuals – the trio of Tone Atlas, DJ Cutler and Nick Zero – rocking jazzy soul beats & samples behind ample group rhymes – really ramping up the tightly thumping jazz accents in the manner of classic hip hop productions from coast to coast! Tone handles the beats, Cutler handle the cuts, and the whole group raps – and the rock it like Tribe Called Quest, early-ish Gangstarr, and the jazzier elements of the Cali scene, ala early 90s Hieroglyphics – but they have a unique perspective afforded by cloudy, blue collar Buffalo that's way nicer than you'd probably expect! Kind of in the throwback vein, but hey, we still love that stuff – and you should, too. Titles include "Resourceful Illlery", "Septemberfest", "No Money, Mo Problems", "Autumn Leaves", "Abide", "Novemberfest", "Uptown Wednesday Night", "Lullaby Of Lyndale", :The Impudent Date Rap", "Decemberfest" and more.
(Limited handnumbered edition of 199 copies! Includes a bonus 45 featuring the tracks "No Money, Mo' Problems" and "Blue Collar Funk" remixed by Scott Down & DJ Cutler.)

new Pseudo Intellectuals/Scott Down & DJ Cutler — No Money Mo Problems/Blue Collar Funk ... 7-inch
Lo Do, 2008. New Copy .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mighty funk & hip hop from Buffalo's Pseudo Intellectuals and Scott Down & DJ Cutler! "No Money Mo Problems" is a rugged & raw hip hop number from Pseudo Intellectual – with a jazz funk bass groove at the heart of it, and a conversational flow from the MCs. The funky hip hop remix "Blue Collar Funk" spun by SD & DJ C is a straight funky number at the core – cut up with heavier drums and hip hop vocal bits. It's a busy, disjointed funk jam in the best sense of the word!

new Pete Rugolo & His Orchestra — Adventure In Sound - Reeds In Hi Fi ... LP
Mercury, Late 50s. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Pete Rugolo's greatest albums – and some of his most groundbreaking work away from Stan Kenton! The album features Rugolo arranging for a tight group of west coast reed players – including Bud Shank, Dave Pell, and Bob Cooper – and the tracks are angular, complicated, and dosed with that right mixture of modernism and swing that made Kenton's best work from the early 50s so great. Titles include "Theme For Alto", "Igor Beaver", "Impressionism", "Our Waltz", "Polytonal Blues", and "Collaboration".
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Vinyl on Side 1 has cosmetic sleeve marks. Cover has discoloration due to age and some stains on the back.)

new Lalo Schifrin — Black Widow ... LP
CTI, 1976. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky 70s work from Lalo – with a bit of a disco twist, and plenty of the electric jazz funk elements that were showing up in his soundtracks at the time. Lalo's on keyboards, playing a cool host of electric ones that give the record a nice spacey sound over the top of the funky arrangements. There's plenty of nice guitar work – either by Eric Gale or John Tropea – which gives the cuts some nice choppy funky bits that drive them a bit harder than you might expect. Includes an amazing funk remake of "Quiet Village", plus "Dragonfly", "Black Widow", "Baia", "Turning Point", and a version of the "Jaws" theme!
(Includes the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has a gold promo stamp and a small bit of tape on the spine.)

new Lalo Schifrin — Cincinnati Kid ... LP
MGM, Late 60s. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
This one's got a bluesy jazz approach – set by Ray Charles' version of the title theme, and followed through by Lalo's great instrumental tracks – which mix strings, soul, and just the right jazzy touches to keep things moving along with a subtle groove. Ttiles include "The Chase", "Dialogue In The Rain", "Melba", "The Game", "The Cinncinnati Kid", "The Cock Fight", and "Shooter".

new Lalo Schifrin — Gypsies ... LP
Tabu, 1978. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An ambitious set of funky jazz tunes from Lalo – cut in the proto-disco style of some of his later CTI work, but also done with some interesting instrumental flourishes from track to track. The album's got a "gypsy" spirit in the compositions – sometimes touched with a bit of acoustic guitar – but overall, the main groove is electric, laid down by lots of keyboard grooves from Lalo and Mike Melvoin. A few tracks are a bit hokey, but overall, the album's as strong as most of Lalo's other work from the time – and tracks include "Fortune Tellers", "Ring Around The Moon", "Prophecy Of Love", and "Pampas".
(White label promo. Cover has a promo stamp and tracklist sticker.)

new Lalo Schifrin — There's A Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin' On ... LP
Dot, 1968. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crazy album of funky tracks from Lalo Schifrin – very different than most of his other jazz and bossa work! This set's got some very tripped out styles that mix together funky backings, jazzy riffing, and even some nice electronics – a sweet little groove that's even more wild and hip than even the best of Schifrin's soundtrack work from the 60s! Some tunes certainly show the deft talent for arranging woodwinds and rhythms that first caught the ears of so many listeners on famous soundtracks – but in the setting of this record, away from any directorial needs, Lalo's also free to explore some groovier music ideas – and he really lets loose tremendously as the set rolls on! The titles alone should tell you the feel of the record – with names like "Secret Code", "Dissolving", "Vaccinated Mushrooms", "Wheat Germ Landscapes", and "How To Open at Will The Most Beautiful Window".
(Cover has moderate ring and edge wear, and a split top seam held with clear tape.)

new Los Sospechos — Postales ... LP
Colemine, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
Deep funk, but with a compelling twist – bits of South American styles filtering into the mix from time to time, but in subtle ways that never lose the groove! The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door".

new Paul Quinichette — Moods ... LP
EmArcy, 1955. Used .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Perhaps the best-known (and arguably the best) record by Paul Quinchette, and an album that brings his rich tenor solo style into contact with a very tight, very swinging batch of arrangments by a young Quincy Jones. Quincy's got an all-star batch of players backing up Q, including Sam Most, Charles Thompson, Paul Chambers, and Barry Galbraith – plus players like Willie Rodriguez and Manny Oquendo, who bring some added Latin percussion to the session. The tracks are short, but with a very open approach to soloing, and although Quinchette's in the lead, some of the other players get their licks in quite a bit. Titles include "Pablo's Roonie", "Shorty George", "Grasshopper", and "Tropical Intrigue".
(Blue label Mercury pressing with deep groove. Cover has a name in marker, some wear, and masking tape on the top & bottom seams. Cover & labels have two drillholes.)

new Carlo Rustichelli — Divorzio All'Italiana (aka Divorce Italian Style) (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1962. New Copy 2 CDs .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A classic Italian score from Carlo Rustichelli – penned for a famous early comedy from Marcello Mastroianni! The mood of the film is a bit lighter than some of Marcello's with Fellini – and as a result, so is the soundtrack – put together with a mixture of sprightly melodies and older, warmer modes that really the Italian film score mode of the previous decade – but which are masterfully handled by Rustichelli with a tongue-in-cheek approach that's more of a parody of them than anything else! The blend is quite nice – and almost visual enough even without the images on the screen. Titles include "Divorzio", "Canto D'Amore", "Traffico", "Marcia Funebre", "Musica D'Amore", and "Serenata". This massive 2CD version is filled with material – 14 tracks from the original soundtrack, plus an insane 37 more bonus cuts!

new Various — Mood Mosaic Vol 11 – Feeling Funky! – The Cult Tracks Given Birth By The Superheroes Of The 70s ... CD
Partners In Crime (Italy), 1970s. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
What a subtitle – "The Cult Tracks Given Birth By The Superheroes Of The 70s"! And if you're thinking that the tracks are by Wolverine, Firestorm, and other 70s comic book creations, that's not the case – as the superheroes here are funky ones! More specifically, the tracks are great little groovers from the funky 45 underground – the kind of groups that really bubbled under in the charts at the time, many of whom never cut a full LP, but who released some monstrously great singles that made more than a bit of impact at the time. The set's got 20 tracks in all – all hard and funky – with titles that include "Super Soul Brother" by Timmie Rodgers, "Stand Up (part 1)" by Maskman & The Agents, "Spanky's Day Off" by Swingin Soul Machine, "It's The Real Thing (part 1)" by Electric Express, "Get It" by Wilmer & The Dukes, "Feelin Funky" by Brother Soul, "Cramp Your Style" by All the People, "Can't Get Satisfied" by Brother Jack McDuff, "Dynomite" by Tony Camillo's Bazuka, and "Foxy Lady" by Don Thompson.

new Ted Harris — Ted Harris Presents More Giants Of Jazz ... LP
Harris & Dyer, 1982. Used .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A really wonderful little album – a session of indie soul jazz from the early 80s, and proof that quality straight jazz recordings were still being made in the underground! Harris himself is the leader of the session – which features a loosely shifting ensemble of players that includes Hank Edmonds on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, Vernel Fournier on drums, Richard Williams on trumpet, Charles Williams on alto, and Kiane Zawadi on trombone – all players with credentials on better-known recordings, working here in an informal setting that really captures the sort of energy they must have had working in a small group setting at the time. The album's got a few great originals that really step out nicely – "Song For Joyce", "Lo's Delight", and "Rhonda" – all of which have a nicely grooving, but easygoing quality – one that brings out some especially nice notes in Harris' raspy work on tenor and baritone. Other tracks include "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Hey There", and "Stella By Starlight".
