Bill Black — Smokie ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1959. New Copy .... $26.99
One of the earliest albums on Hi Records – and a full set of heavy instrumentals from the Bill Black Combo! The groove is more R&B than Memphis soul – and is especially heavy on the sorts of rolling rhythms you'd hear from New Orleans – a sound that had obviously filtered north, and which at this time was still helping the Tennessee scene find its groove. Yet there's some definite Memphis touches going in here too – especially in the basslines and guitar, and a bit in the tenor solos – which can be nice and biting, with plenty of soul! Titles include "Smokie (parts 1 & 2)", "Cyclone Boy", "Dee J Special", "Anytime", "Before Dawn", "Special Duty", and "Crankcase". CD features two bonus tracks too – "Smokie (part 2) (stereo)", and "Smokie (part 2) (alternate version)".

Bill Black's Combo — Bill Black's Combo Plays The Blues ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1964. New Copy .... $28.99
A great focus for the Bill Black Combo – an album of bluesy tunes that seem to bring out a bit more soul than usual in their music – at least for this time in the group's history! Many of the numbers are older tracks that fall into the category of crossover blues – tunes played more by jazz artists than gritty bluesmen, which make them a good fit for the instrumental style of the combo – tuned a bit more towards the bluer side of the spectrum by the group's electric guitar and bass, and topped with some especially nice work on horns. Titles include "Basin Street Blues", "I'll Never Be Free", "Birth Of The Blues", "Peter Gunn", "Weary Blues", "St Louis Blues", and "Blues In The Night".

Bill Black's Combo — Bill Black's Combo Plays Tunes By Chuck Berry ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1964. New Copy .... $28.99
A whole set of rocking instrumentals from the Bill Black Combo – their own Memphis instrumental versions of tunes recorded by Chuck Berry at Chess – served up in the group's trademark blend of guitar, organ, and tenor sax! There's a bit more guitar than usual on some of the cuts – an obvious nod to Berry's prowess on the instrument – yet other tunes have the tenor taking this place, and working some cool groovy sounds with the lead instrument lines. Titles include "Roll Over Beethoven", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "School Days", "Carol", "Maybellene", "Thirty Days", and "Reelin & Rockin".

Bill Black's Combo — Turn On Your Love Light ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $26.99
Bill Black and his classic combo – but with a sound that's a lot more Stax Records than usual! The grooves are gritty right from the get-go – no surprise, given that the back cover notes begin with an anecdotal definition of funk – one that Black and his group clearly seem to have read, given that they start the album with a mighty drumbreak! The set's still got that saxy Bill Black sound, but the organ is a lot more deeply burning, and the drums have a nice sort of punch too – maybe more Mar-Keys than MGs, but still mighty darn nice. Titles include "Turn On Your Love Light", "The Horse", "Philly Dog", "Big Boss Man", "Red Light", "Bright Lights Big City", and "Shoo Bee Doo Be Doo Da Day".

Otis Clay — I Can't Take It ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $28.99
A great mix of modes – and a set that represents a real turning point in the career of Otis Clay! The rougher edges of Clay's Chicago soul are warmed up here substantially by producer Willie Mitchell – bubbling up some Memphis soul for Otis, in a style that's similar to some of his backings for other singers on the Hi Records label – in a style that makes for a great step forward from Clay's singles of the 60s! The shift is a big one – the sort that helped make Otis one of the standout singers of his generation – really knocking it out of the park on tracks that include "House Ain't A Home", "Slow & Easy", "Born To Be With You", "Home Is Where The Heart Is", "Pussy Footing Around", and "Too Much Mystery".

Al Green — Al Green Gets Next To You ... LP
Hi Records, 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Al Green's first major album, and a killer batch of Memphis soul tracks with a sound that's a bit rawer than later years. The formula for the hits is firmly in place – and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in very sympathetic production by the great Willie Mitchell. Although Mitchell had worked fine on his own before the record, it's his work with Green that really pushes him to the top of the soul hall of fame – as it's hard to imagine how anyone could have come up with a better showcase for Al's amazing voice. Proof of this can be heard on the record's great original tunes by Green – like "All Because", "I'm A Ram", "You Say It", and the classic "Tired Of Being Alone" – as well as on covers like "Driving Wheel", "Can't Get Next To You", and "Light My Fire".

Hi Rhythm — On The Loose ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $28.99
A great little album of southern funk from the 70s – cut by the team that provided musical backing on many of the classic Hi Records sessions from the time! The groove is a bit different than usual for Hi – not compressed, burning deep soul – but tight, funky, and flanged-out – a bit like what classic P-Funk might have been like, had it been recorded in Memphis! The group's super sharp in their playing – with great bass and electric keyboards – but they've also got kind of a trippy feel that's very surprising, given the more restrained soul quality of much of the stuff on Hi. The album's all original material, and most cuts have cool vocals slinking in and out of the funk – and titles include "On The Loose", "Skinny Dippin'", "Superstar", "Purple Raindrops", and "You Got Me Comin".

Syl Johnson — Back For A Taste Of Your Love ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $28.99
A great second-chapter effort from the legendary Syl Johnson – a sweet little record in which Johnson's raw vocals come into play with the tighter, warmer sound of Hi Records – with amazing results that have made the album a classic for years! The blend here is great – as Johnson's trademark crackle is still very much in place, but the production by Willie Mitchell really helps give him a lot of focus too – especially on some of the more heartfelt numbers, which come across here with a sensual force that Syl might never have hit on his own. Syl wrote a number of the tracks himself too – and titles include "I'm Yours", "Feelin' Frisky", "I Hate I Walked Away", "Wind Blow Her Back My Wan", "I Let A Good Girl Go", and "The Love You Left Behind".

Syl Johnson — Diamond In The Rough ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1974. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99
The great Syl Johnson – doing his thing for Hi Records on a record that's more shiny diamond than it is rough – his second album for the label and a truly underappreciated gem from the Chi soul great! Diamond In The Rough is a much sweeter set of tunes than Syl's Chicago work on Twinight, with warmer production by southern soul guru Willie Mitchell to keep his sound much more in the Memphis soul camp – but still a nice album of bluesy stoked sweetness, and proof that Syl was one of the better talents on the Hi label. Titles include "Keeping Down Confusion", "Let Yourself Go", "Could I Be Falling In Love", "Stuck In Chicago", and "I Hear The Love Chimes", "Please, Don't Give Up On Me" and "Diamond In The Rough".

Syl Johnson — Total Explosion ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $19.99
A wicked explosion from the legendary Syl Johnson – one of his smoking sets for Hi Records – done with solid soulful help from Willie Mitchell! Mitchell's familiar Memphis groove is firmly in place here – tightly compressed rhythms and horns, vamping perfectly for Syl's raw vocals – and the set also seems to feature Johnson smoking some grooves on harmonica too – but in a way that's still a lot more soul than blues! There's a few great funky moments on the set – a nice reminder of the Twinight years – and tracks include "I Only Have Love", "Take Me To The River", "Bustin Up Or Busin Out", "'Bout To Make Me Leave Home", "That's Just My Luck", "It Ain't Easy", "Steppin Out", and "Watch What You Do To Me".

Syl Johnson — Uptown Shakedown ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $28.99
A different sound than usual for Syl Johnson – but a record that still has loads of those amazing vocals we love from Syl! The style's mostly modern soul – with a tightness that's different from the grit of earlier Johnson albums – that mode in which other singers of the time were tightening up their bag too. The approach works especially well on the midtempo groovers – which have the bite of Johnson's vocals providing a great contrast tot he smoother grooves of the instrumentation – in ways that really deepen the feel of the tunes, but in ways that are very different than classic work from Syl. Titles include "Mystery Lady", "Blue Water", "Who's Gonna Love You", "You're The Star Of The Show", "Gimme Little Sign", and a 9 minute "Otis Redding Medley".

Willie Mitchell — It's What's Happenin' ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $28.99
A mod little record from trumpeter Willie Mitchell – a set that's as groovy as it is soulful, with a vibe that's somewhere between 60s instrumental outings on Verve and Atlantic Records! Tunes are a mix of soul and pop numbers, handled by Mitchell's combo with some mighty tight drums and good use of organ on most numbers – which creates a fluid feel that really takes off with the album's fresh and inventive arrangements! Even familiar tunes are transformed nicely by Mitchell's great touch in the studio – as you'll hear on cuts that include "634-5789", "Taste Of Honey", "Secret Agent Man", "Bad Eye", "Wooly Bully", "Java", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Hot Cha".

new Willie Mitchell — Memphis Rhythm King ... CD
Hi Records (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99
A smoking selection of work from Memphis giant Willie Mitchell – some of the funkiest tracks he ever recorded, stuffed together in one mighty set! Willie's probably best know for his famous studio work for Ann Peebles and Al Green – but on his own, Mitchell can carve out a cooker like nobody's business – in this case with a great ear for the kind of harder instrumental soul sounds you might hear from Stax or Atlantic Records at the start of the 70s! These tunes have a way harder edge than the compressed, smooth sound of Willie's work with singers – and often feature a sharp solo instrument in the lead – such as tenor sax, riffing guitar, or soulful trumpet. Titles include "Breaking Point", "Six To Go", "Poppin", "Pearl Time", "20-75", "Leo's Mood", "The Champion", "Mercy", "That Driving Beat", "30 60 90", "Everything's Gonna Be Alright", and "Big Power House".

Willie Mitchell — On Top ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $26.99
Willie Mitchell's definitely on top with this smoking little set – a record that seems to allow even freer interplay between the members of his group – in ways that make the album one of Mitchell's jazziest efforts of the 60s! The players of the group are getting a bit of credit on the back cover this time around – a great revelation that the smoking tenor on the record comes from Willie's brother James Mitchell, and that the cool tight guitar lines are from Mabon Teenie Hodges – who we don't think we know from anywhere else! Most tunes are familiar songs, but reworked with hip Memphis instrumental arrangements – on titles that include "30 60 90", "Big Power House", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Come See About Me", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Who's Makin Love", and "Take Five".

Willie Mitchell — Solid Soul ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $28.99
They definitely got the title right on this one – as the set's a solid batch of soulful instrumentals all the way through – one of our favorites from the great Willie Mitchell! Willie's got a lot more bite here than on some of his famous warmer productions in the 70s – a gritty Memphis soul instrumental style that's pretty close to the best of its kind over at Stax Records – complete with tight, punchy drums on the bottom – and a sweet mix of organ, tenor, guitar, and trumpet in the lead! Nothing's ever too forced, and there's a groove that's laidback, but right on the money – on titles that include "San Ho Zay", "Monkey Jump", "Strawberry Solo", "Hideaway", "Up Hard", "The Horse", and "Grazing In The Grass".

Willie Mitchell — Soul Bag ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $28.99
Willie's Soul Bag is pretty darn deep – a tight mixture of trumpet-heavy originals – all given sock-solid Hi Records soul production! The album's one of Mitchell's most smoking – and in addition to a few well-chosen covers, the set's also got some great originals – including some Jackson/Love numbers that have a definite Memphis Horns groove! There's some great Hammond at times – and in a way, the whole thing almost feels more like a Stax instrumental set than the sort of grooves we're used to hearing from Hi. Titles include "Apollo X", "Grand Slam", "Honey Pot", "Hawaii Five O", "Set Free", "Everday People", and "Young People".

Willie Mitchell — Willie Mitchell's Driving Beat ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $26.99
A killer from Willie Mitchell – harder, funkier, and a lot more soulful than most of his other records from the 60s! The groove here is sock-soul, and most cuts have a hard and tight funky 45 approach. Willie was really cut loose on this one – freed from his usual standard of recording hits and pop songs, he wrote all the songs on the set – and they're heavy Memphis instrumentals with a sound that's much more like 60s Bar Kays work on Stax! There's a great sax player on the session, too – not named in the notes, unfortunately, but with a sound that really wails on the best tracks. Titles include "Fat Cat", "Pep Talk", "That Driving Beat", "The Champion (parts 1 & 2)", "Nick O Demus", "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright", and "Stone Face".

Ann Peebles — I Can't Stand The Rain ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1974. New Copy .... $11.99 15.98
Easily our favorite album ever by Ann Peebles – not just for the beathead title track, but also because it seems to be the one record where she brings a bit something extra to the studio! The sound is certainly in the classic Hi Records mode here – thanks to production by Willie Mitchell – but there's also a deeper groove overall, a stronger burning bottom, and an all-soul sound to most tracks that goes way beyond simple cliches of southern soul. Ann's vocals are tremendous throughout – sometimes sweet, sometimes mean – and titles include the sublime "I Can't Stand The Rain", plus "Run Run Run", "One Way Street", "You Keep Me Hangin On", and "If We Can't Trust Each Other".

Ann Peebles — Part Time Love ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1971. New Copy .... $11.99 14.99
A great litle early album from Ann Peebles – rawer than most of her more familiar stuff, with a gutbuckety soul quality that really keeps things fresh! Willie Mitchell produced and arranged (of course!), and the record's got some sweet backing vocals by Rhodes, Chalmers, & Rhodes – very much in a Sweet Inspirations mode. Tracks include a funky remake of The Isleys' "It's Your Thing", plus "Solid Foundation", "Crazy About You Baby", "Give Me Some Credit", and "Generation Gap Between Us".

Various — River Town Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $28.99
A bit blues, a bit soul, and a great document of some under-recorded talents in the Memphis scene at the start of the 70s! The album's got a grittier sound than usual for Hi Records – and shows that at some levels in Memphis, there were still artists carrying the heavier sounds of a decade before – music that's a lot rougher and more unbridled than the sorts of more popular Memphis soul that was fast becoming the stuff of chart hits. The whole thing's a much-needed look at this side of the southern scene – and titles include "Please Don't Leave", "You Better Mind", and "Miss Betty Green" by Big Lucky; "Dog Man", "I'm Gone", and "Going To Vietnam" by Big Amos; and "Please Accept My Love" and "Stormy Monday Blues" by Donald Hines. CD version features nearly twice the music as the original album – with more cuts by each of the above artists – plus addition of cuts by Joe Lee Carter that include "Please Mr Forman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "I Can't Stand It", and "Let Me Know".

new Various — Soul Searchin – Finding Gold In Memphis 1968 to 1979 ... CD
Hi Records/Backbeats (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
More than a decade's worth of music from the legendary Hi Records – and a great little set that goes way past the hits – and uncovers some overlooked singles from the legendary Memphis label! The cuts were chosen by Jaffa – who makes this Backbeats series look so great – and he's definitely got a great eye for an obscure single, especially the sort that shows us that Hi was even still great right around the fringes! Titles include "Pour On The Loving" by Jean Plum, "You Brought The Sun Back Into My Life" by Quiet Elegance with Dan Greer, "Back Into Your Heart" by Majik, "Happy" by Al Green, "Love Makes The World Go Round" by Willie Walker, "Mama Said" by Quiet Elegance, "Still Around" by James Fry, "Stepchild" by Veniece, "Ain't That Sharing My Love" by The Melodics, "I'm Gonna Stay" by Jean Plum, "What Made You Change Your Mind" by Eddie McGee, "It's You That I Need" by The Duncan Sisters, "Slidin In & Out" by The Memphians, "Love Trap" by Bobby McClure, "You Gotta Have Love" by OV Wright, and "Where's Your Love Been" by Donna Rhodes.

Beautiful early work by Al! The record is a haunting mix of tender soul tracks filled with love, warmth, and Al's sexy soul. It's hard to distinguish this one from other records of his at the time, because they're all so good – but we can tell you that the album features Al's stone classic "Love & Happiness", plus the tracks "I'm Still In Love With You", "I'm Glad You're Mine", "What A Wonderful Thing Love Is", "Look What You Done For Me", and his great remake of Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times", a country/soul classic if there ever was one!

A stone killer from OV Wright – a record that's got all the raw, deeply soulful vocals we love in his early work – mixed with some wicked 70s Hi Records production from Willie Mitchell! Imagine an Al Green record, but with rawer vocals, and you've got a good idea of the feel of this one – a perfect setting for OV's massive talent, and a great way for him to reach out to a wider audience too! The sound is impeccable – about as classic as you can get for Hi – and titles include a number of great Willie Mitchell originals – including "I Feel Love Growin", "The Time We Have", and "You Gotta Have Love". The set also includes a nice version of "Trying To Live My Life Without You", too!

new Don Bryant — Precious Soul (with download) ... LP
Hi Records/Fat Possum, Late 60s. New Copy .... $11.99 14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure on Hi Records – one of the few albums ever cut by Don Bryant, a singer whose talents seemed to be eclipsed by the rising stars of Al Green and Ann Peebles – but who was every bit as great! Bryant's got a sound here that's still firmly in the Hi style forged by Willie Mitchell – who produces this set – but there's also some nicely rougher edges too, a sound that's almost more Stax than Hi – and which certainly features a bit of a nod to Wilson Pickett down in Muscle Shoals – not exactly funk, but with some nice grit in the grooves! The whole thing's great – and titles include "Try Me", "Cry Baby", "Funky Broadway", "Soul Man", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "She's Looking Good", and "Slip Away".

new Al Green — Belle Album ... LP
Hi Records, 1977. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Al takes over the whole deal with this one – as the record features him writing, producing, arranging, and even playing lead guitar! Of course, he gets a bit of help – from Fred Jordan and Reuben Fairfax, whose names are hidden in smaller type, under the message on the back that says that the record is "something new". Well, it doesn't have Willie Mitchell, that's for dang sure. Al's voice is always nice and pretty, and the record's still got some really nice moments! Titles include "All N All", "Belle", "Loving You", "Georgia Boy", "Feels Like Summer" and "Dream".

Al Green, 1973 – what could be better? The king of Memphis soul is at the height of his powers here – working in a setting that yielded less chart hits than some of his other albums for Hi Records, but which is still as sublime as the rest – thanks to an undeniable studio magic guided by Willie Mitchell! The sound is full, but never slick or smooth – and Al's vocals are tremendous throughout (but honestly, did you expect anything less?) Titles include "Call Me (Come Back Home)", "Here I Am (Come & Take Me)", "Funny How Time Slips Away", and the beautiful "Have You Been Making Out OK?"

Beautiful early work by Al! The record is a haunting mix of tender soul tracks filled with love, warmth, and Al's sexy soul. It's hard to distinguish this one from other records of his at the time, because they're all so good – but we can tell you that the album features Al's stone classic "Love & Happiness", plus the tracks "I'm Still In Love With You", "I'm Glad You're Mine", "What A Wonderful Thing Love Is", "Look What You Done For Me", and his great remake of Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times", a country/soul classic if there ever was one!

new Al Green — Livin For You ... LP
Hi Records, 1973. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard to go wrong with Al Green at this point – 1973, when the mighty one was at the height of his secular soul powers – and when the sweetly compressed production style of Willie Mitchell just couldn't miss! There's a homey, earthy feel to the record that's really great – a sound that kicks back and lets the soul flow magically – never forcing things at all, nor taking them into the sort of easy hit territory that would have been a temptation at this point. And if anything, the album's a wonderful exercise in understatement – the kind of gently flowing soul that Green virtually invented at the time, and which few other singers could hope to match! Titles include the excellent "Let's Get Married", plus "Livin For You", "Free At Last", "Home Again", "So Good To Be Here", and "Beware" – all original tracks written by Green!

new Syl Johnson — Back For A Taste – The Syl Johnson Story 1971-1978 ... CD
Hi Records/Cream (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great 2CD set that brings together 39 tracks from Syl Johnson's years at Hi Records! Although Syl's probably best known to funk fans for his early recordings in Chicago, his 70s sides for Hi in Memphis are also quite nice – mellower, and perhaps bluesier, than his early funkier singles and LP tracks, but touched by the warmth of the Memphis scene, in a way that mellows Syl's vocals nicely. The package features just about every track you'd want from Syl's years at the label – and tracks include "We Did It", "Back For A Taste Of Your Love", "Bleu Water", "Diamond In The Rough", "Anyway The Wind Blows", "I Let A Good Girl Go", "Keeping Down Confusion", "Music To My Ears", "Please Don't Give Up On Me", "I Hear The Love Chimes", "Feelin Frisky", "Watch What You Do", "Steppin Out", and "Funk You".

new Syl Johnson — Mississippi Main Man ... CD
Hi Records/Harmless (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
70s magic from Syl Johnson – a huge collection of his work for the Hi Records label – put together in a set that seems to include almost ever track that Syl recorded at the time! The music is quite different than Johnson's earlier work in Chicago – warmer, with more of a southern soul vibe – thanks to production from Willie Mitchell, who's often putting Syl's vocals in the same sort of setting he used with Al Green – a mode that really opens up some new magic in Johnson's singing! There's a slow-burning brilliance to the set right from the start – and tracks include "Main Squeeze", "We Did It", "The Love You Left Behind", "I Wanna Satisfy Your Every Need", "Come On Home", "Stand By Me", "Please Don't Give Up On Me", "Take Me To The River", "Let Yourself Go", "Anyone But You", and "Could I Be Falling In Love".

new OV Wright — Bottom Line ... LP
Hi Records, 1978. Used .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work from OV Wright – one of the few singers who was still strongly carrying the Hi Records torch at the end of the 70s! Although Wright had sometimes been bluesier in the past, his late 70s Hi sides have a much mellower, mature sort of feel – a ripening of the seeds in his Backbeat label work, taken to nice new heights at Hi in the hands of Willie Mitchell. Mitchell's backings have a feel that's somewhat like his work with Al Green, but OV's style of singing is completely different – not as overtly sexy, but really personal in approach. Titles include "That's The Way I Feel About Cha", "A Little More Time", "I Don't Know Why", "No Easy Way To Say Goodbye", "Let's Straighten It Out", and "The Bottom Line".

The set also includes a nice version of "Trying To Live My Life Without You", too!

new Ann Peebles — Ann Peebles – The Original Soul Sister ... CD
Hi Records/Music Club (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing amount of greatness from the legendary Ann Peebles – easily one of the most important southern female soul singers of the 70s! Peebles was a seminal force on the Memphis soul scene, especially in the early part of the decade – working famously here for Hi Records, with lots of help from studio genius Willie Mitchell. Ann's work for Hi was second only to labelmate Al Green – and like Green, she worked in a similar slow-burning style that set a whole new sound for southern soul – one that updated an older Memphis mode into a more sophisticated, more adult groove that made tremendous use of Peebles' magnificent vocals! This 44 track package features some of the best tunes from those years – a great overview that includes "I Can't Let You Go", "I Can't Stand The Rain", "Do I Need You", "Put Yourself In My Place", "Part Time Love", "I Pity The Fool", "Breaking Up Somebody's Home", "I'll Get Along", "Generation Gap Between Us", "Heartaches", "If You Got The Time", "Mon Belle Amour", "Waiting", "Good Day For Lovin", "Beware", "Dr Love Power", and "Come To Mama".

Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $28.99 Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the most successful record Otis Clay ever cut – and a wonderful little set that recasts his bluesy Chicago vocals with a sweeter Memphis soul approach! Willie Mitchell is very firmly in the house for the record – and the approach he uses here with Otis is similar to that he used with Al Green on his biggest hits – slow-burning, slinkily soulful – in a way that infuses older modes of singing with a new level of sophistication and adult appeal! Backing is by the Memphis Horns – shimmering nicely in a trademark Hi sort of way – and titles include the classic "Trying To Live My Life Without You", plus "I Love You, I Need You", "Holding Onto A Dying Love", "I Die A Little Each Day", and "That's How It Is".

new Willie Mitchell — Hold It – Here's Willie Mitchell ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy .... $28.99 Out Of Stock
Very early grooves from Willie Mitchell – a set that's got a bit more R&B than in Willie's later years – with less trumpet in the mix, and more of an overall punch in the rhythms! Guitar is quite strong on most of these instrumentals – and there's some nice tenor, too – and an overall sound that almost seems borrowed from some of the best King Records instrumental combos of the late 50s – including Bill Doggett, as the group seems to borrow the tenor sound of Clifford Scott and the wailing guitar of Billy Butler! Butler's "Hold It" is covered beautifully by the group – and other titles include "The Dog", "Last Night", "Mashed Potatoes", "Percolatin", and "The Crawl" – plus Willie's own "20-75".

Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $28.99 Out Of Stock
Ann Peebles' first album for Hi Records – and the start of a tremendous run of southern soul classics! The set features Ann working with Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's similar to her later Hi work, but rougher too – with more of a hard soul edge than we're used to hearing in her vocals – a great moment in which the Hi Records sound was just coming together, but not as iconic as it was by the mid 70s – territory that really help us get a bit more of a glimpse at Peebles' roots! The album features Ann's versions of a number of southern soul tunes – claiming gems like "Chain of Fools", "Respect", and "Steal Away" for her own! And other tracks include "My Man – He's a Lovin Man", "Crazy About You Baby", "Give Me Some Credit", and "Walk Away".

new OV Wright — Live In Japan ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
OV Wright at the end of the 70s – working live in front of a very enthusiastic Japanese crowd, and in a groove that's right up their with his best work from earlier in the decade! In fact, there's a rawness here that you won't always find on Wright's other records – great live backing from a cool combo of American players, really rich in Memphis soul elements – and served up with funky touches that really work wonders with OV's presentation of the music. So instead of being a throw-off record for the overseas market, the set's instead a key piece of Wright's catalog at the time – seminal work that really stands strongly next to his studio classics. Titles include "Precious Precious", "I'd Rather Be Blind Crippled & Crazy", "Love & Happiness", "Eight Men & Four Women", "Into Something", and a great long "Medley" track.

Chordettes — Close Harmony ... CD
Cadence/El (UK), Early 50s. New Copy .... $6.99
An assortment of early 50s recordings by The Chordettes – easily one of the most heavenly groups ever to record in pop music! The quartet first had their roots in barbershop harmony, but soon stepped into much more sophisticated territory with these recordings for Cadence Records – sides that are perhaps best remembered for the hit "Mr Sandman", but which are pretty darn interesting throughout! The style's a bit sweeter and a bit less modern than work by The Four Freshmen or The Hi-Los from the 50s, but it's also no less compelling – and The Chordettes were one of the few female groups of the time to sing in such a way, making them a real standout. Tracks here sometimes feature additional instrumentation, usually on rhythm – but often the recordings are nearly acapella, and base all the song structures simply on the amazing vocals by the lovely ladies in the group! CD features 16 titles in all – including "Mr Sandman", "We Three", "San", "Oh Baby Mine", "For Me & My Girl", "Down Among The Sweltering Palms", "Hummingbird", "Lovely Lips", and "A Good Man Is Hard To Find".

Geater Davis — Lost Soul ... CD
House of Orange/Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99 15.98
An incredible collection of work from the vastly-overlooked Geater Davis – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! Geater Davis is a tremendous singer from the south – but one who barely ever got his due back in the 70s – even though these recordings for the tiny House Of Orange label are every bit as amazing as work coming out for bigger labels like Stax or Hi Records! Although Davis didn't record nearly as much as his contemporaries, he's got a sound that matches or beats them – a raw, raspy quality that's a bit like Bobby Blue Bland, touched with the depth of feeling we love in James Carr, peppered with elements of other Memphis singers – all produced to perfection with a sound that's got a deep-burning soul that never lets up. This excellent collection features all tracks from Geater's rare album Sweet Woman's Love, plus additional singles from the time – all produced by Allen Orange, an overlooked genius in the southern studio scene of the 70s. Titles include "Don't Marry A Fool", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Love You", "I Know My Baby Loves Me", "I Can Hold My Own", "Cold Love (long version)", "I'll Get By", "I'll Play The Blues For You", "Breath Taking Girl", and a killer long take on "For Your Precious Love".

Marty Gold — Sounds Unlimited/For Sound's Sake ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy .... $16.99
A pair of instrumental classics from Marty Gold – back to back on a single CD! Sounds Unlimited is filled with soaring sounds from RCA maestro Marty Gold – maybe not the totally unlimited record you might expect from the title, but definitely a key 60s entry in the genre of bachelor pad hi fi records! There's a fair bit of horns in the orchestrations, with solos by Don Butterfield, Joe Wilder, Phil Bodner, and Mel Davis – all of whom help to color the tunes with lots of nice jazzy tones – giving the whole thing a bit more depth than the usual instrumental outing. Titles include "Alone Together", "When I Fall In love", "Ballerina", "Skylark", "The Donkey Serenade", and "Tonight". For Sound's Sake has Marty Gold really pushing the needle into the red – using lots of jazzy inflections to expand the dynamic range of the instrumentals on the set – with key solo work by players who include Phil Bodner and Jerome Richardson on reeds, as well as Joe Wilder on trumpet. Titles include "Mood Indigo", "Memories Of You", "Yesterdays", "All The Things You Are", "I Love Paris", "El Cumbanchero", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads".

Al Green — Back Up Train ... LP
Hot Line/Bell, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Al Green's first LP – with a very different feel than his later work on Hi. The record's got a harder southern soul groove – almost in a Wilson Pickett/Arthur Conley mode, but with some sweeter elements in the backing. Al's voice is still incredible, although different than later, in that he's singing with a really open vibe, letting himself go a bit more, and not keeping in that smooth sophisticated mode of later years. Originally released by the tiny Hot Line label, and issued later by Bell Records when Al started to hit big with Hi Records during the early 70s. Titles include "Back Up Train", "Get Yourself Together", "Don't Leave Me", "Let Me Help You", "Hot Wire", and "Stop & Check Myself".

Clay Hammond — Come Into These Arms Of Mine ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $29.99
An overlooked gem from the equally-overlooked Clay Hammond – a sweet 70s groover that offers up a great mix of modern and deep soul modes! Clay's vocals are still every bit as great as on some of his earlier soul singles, but the arrangements push things into tighter territory that's mighty nice – a lot like some of the later Hi Records work from Al Green – or even better, like that great sound that Otis Clay hit at the end of the 70s! Like Otis Clay's best records from the time, Clay's vocals stay nice and real – wrapped up in a sweet mix of blues and soul – and although the backings often hit a warmer midtempo groove, they're never overdone or commercial at all – just a maturation of southern soul modes – in ways that kind of point towards the later Malaco scene, while avoiding any of its cliches. Titles include "Tuning Up", "Rap On Wood", "Don't Stop Your Love", "Come Into These Arms Of Love", "Part Time Love", "Love Won't Let Me Stay Away From You", and "Women Are Human".

A groovy late 70s outing from the Hi Los – done at the same time that group member Gene Puerling was having a great run for MPS with his group The Singers Unlimited! The style here's a bit like the Hi Los of old, but it's also got some of the smoother, sweeter tones that Puerling developed with the Singers Unlimited – that near-perfect approach to sound, with the vocals wrapped up nicely in pure harmonic bliss! Backings are directed by Rob McConnell, and vocal arrangements are by Puerling – on titles that include "Misty", "Everything Must Change", "I Remember You", "Seems Like Old Times", and "When Sunny Gets Blue".

Rare Memphis soul from David Hudson – work recorded at the Royal Studios with producer Willie Mitchell – issued here for the first time ever! The material is great, and really augments David's too-small catalog of recorded works – with a style that's kind of a modern evolution of older southern modes, as Hudson still stays vocally strong in his roots, yet moves into some warmer modes too. Mitchell's production style is in a post-Hi Records sort of approach – and Willie also wrote all the tracks on the set, titles that include "When I'm Loving You", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Ally My Love", "Be That Way Sometimes", "Let's Make Love", and "Something Good".

new Luther Ingram — Pity For The Lonely – The KoKo Singles Vol 1 ... CD
Koko/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
A treasure trove of overlooked Memphis soul – the earliest work of the legendary Luther Ingram – brought together here properly for the first time ever! Although Ingram's probably best known for his mega-huge hits in the early 70s, he really sounds amazing here in the early days – a vocalist with a bit more grit than we remember, working with backings that have an underground, deep soul take on the Memphis sound of the time. There's a somewhat more down home quality to some of these tunes than on other Memphis work from the late 60s – a style that probably didn't play as big up north as some of the hitmakers from the scene, but which is really worth of rediscovery all these many years later. Unlike other over-cliched work on Stax and Hi Records, most of these tunes have a really fresh, new sort of feel – less-iconic, and all the more appealing because of that fact. CD features 19 tracks in all, pulled from Ingram's first 10 singles – including "You've Got To Give Love To Get Love", "Ghetto Train", "I Can't Stop", "My Honey & Me", "Missing You", "Looking For A New Love", "Pity For The Lonely", "Home Don't Seem Like Home", "To The Other Man", "I'll Love You Until The End", and a rare radio promo of "My Honey & Me".

For the session, Brockington chose a warm, organ-drenched sound that's a fair bit like some of the best work coming out of Hi Records at the same time – although without as much of a southern soul approach overall. Johnson's vocals have a beautifully crackling sort of quality – one that's honest and human, but still smooth enough to fit the mode of the music here – a bit like Al Green, but a little more east coast overall. The set's got some excellent mellow soul numbers that are worth the price of admission alone – tracks that slide out beautifully with a really gentle sound, and bubble up with a tremendous amount of soul. But there's also some fuller, more upbeat tunes too – groovers that have made the album a favorite overseas for years! Titles include "Visions Of Paradise", "Stop Me", "Give It Up", "Second To None", "Won't You Stay", "It's Yours Baby", "Please Come Back", and "I Just Got To Know".

new Syl Johnson — Complete Mythology (6LPs & 4CDs box set) ... LP
Numero, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 6LPs/4CDs .... $62.99 79.98
A really really amazing package – the full story of the early years of Syl Johnson – one of the funkiest soul singers to ever come from Chicago! Syl's music has become the stuff of legend over the years – initially collected in rare funky 45s and two even rarer albums – then sampled heavily, compiled frequently, and spun out to a huge global audience that Johnson never had back in the day. Yet throughout the years, things were never done properly – and certainly with any sense of history or continutiy that would unite the music – until now. The folks at Numero have really outdone themselves this time – not just by including both CD (4 of them) and LP (6 of those) versions of the music in the set – but also by coming up with one of the most attractive, uniquely packaged records we've ever seen! The box and booklet alone are completely beautiful – the latter filled with vintage photos, personal recollections by Syl, and some great Numero writing – not to mention much-needed details on the recordings within. And the LPs each come in their own jackets – two of which mimic the original Twinight albums, the other four of which create Shama, Trip, and Federal label albums of Johnson's music – records that didn't exist back in the 60s, but which look as if they've come from a time machine! The CDs come in a very cool LP-styled jacket – and the whole thing slides together as sweetly as the funky music within. None of the Hi Records material is included – just material from labels that include Twilight/Twinight, King/Federal, Shama, TMP/Ting, Zachron, One-Derful, Cha Cha, Special Agent, and P-Vine – including a number of tracks never issued before. We could write for hours about how great this set is – but honestly, one look, or one listen, and you'll be hooked!

new Herbie Mann — Hi Flutin (aka Flute Fraternity) ... LP
Mode/Premier, Late 50s. Good+ .... $0.99
An excellent little album from the team of Herbie Mann & Buddy Collette – one that has both players using a wide range of reed instruments, and not just flute! Herbie and Buddy are wonderfully paired here – in a way that expands past the usual flute jazz mode by adding in bits of tenor sax, alto, and clarinet – as well as a range of different flutes too – not in a mode that's gimmicky, but which complements the lighter sound of the flute with some heavier notes on tenor at just the right moment – in a style that reminds us of some of Jerome Richardson's best records of the time. Rhythm is by the trio of Mel Lewis on drums, Buddy Clark on bass, and Jimmy Rowles on both piano and a bit of celeste – and tracks are long, with a freshly spontaneous feel that's really great! Titles include "Morning After", "Here's Pete", "Theme From Theme From", "Give A Little Whistle", "Herbie's Buddy", and "Pop Melody". This is a 2nd pressing of the Mode album Flute Fraternity – without Buddy Collette as the co-leader on the cover, and with his name listed in the notes as Bobby Collette!
(Cover has some wear, some staining, a small split on the top seam, and a bitf pen on the back.)

Helen Merrill — Deep In A Dream (aka Feeling Is Mutual) ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $29.99
A wonderfully moody session from Helen Merrill – and an obscure one too! The album was recorded in New York in 1965 – with pianist Dick Katz leading an off-beat group that featured Thad Jones on cornet, Jim Hall on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – a combo that has equal talents for modern moments and more sensitive moods. The groove is much more fragmented than on some of Helen's earlier records for Mercury – with a jagged edge that works perfectly with her strangely detached style of presenting a lyric – a way of looking at familiar tunes almost from the outside, in ways that really come up with something new. Titles include "Baltimore Oriole", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Day Dream", "The Winter Of My Discontent", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Deep In A Dream".

Anita O'Day — Anita O'Day 1975 – Gone With The Wind ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $13.99
An overlooked treasure from Anita O'Day – easily one of her best records of the 70s, and a record that seems to bring together both of the best aspects of her sound! At one level, there's a tightly swinging groove to the set – that great small combo jazz approach that seemed to work best for Anita back in the 50s – but at another level, there's also that more mature, slightly world-weary quality that really helped deepen her sound in later years – giving O'Day's vocals a fleshed-out feeling that she never would have hit back in the day! There's a richness to the record right from the start – and titles include "Opus One", "Gone With The Wind", "It Had To Be You", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Exactly Like You", and "A Song For You".

Johnny Robinson — Memphis High ... LP
Epic, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $7.99
The only album we've ever seen by Johnny Robinson – a rare non-Hi Records set produced by Willie Mitchell, with a sound that's as deeply soulful as some of the best indie work coming out of the Memphis scene in the 60s! Willie's style here is rougher than that used with Al Green or Ann Peebles – and Robinson comes off wonderfully in a nice mix of funk, deep soul, and slower burning backings – all handled with a sense of poise, but also enough of a down-home sense to keep all the raw edges nicely intact! The album's a rare Memphis gem from an unusual source – and titles include "God Is Love", "We Are Gonna Make It", "Slip Away", "Reconsider Me", "Funky Feet", "Lady Doctor", and "Don't Take It So Hard".

Pete Terrace — PT ... LP
Mio, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99
One of the most obscure albums ever cut by Latin vibes genius Pete Terrace – and one of the best, too! The album's got a great mix of jazzy and soulful influences – a sound that's a fair bit groovier than some of Pete's other, earlier records – with a hard swinging on most numbers, thanks to plenty of heavy piano, timbales, and vibes! A number of tracks have vocals in choro style, but the main focus here is instrumental – almost creating a mini-descarga sort of vibe at times, and a Latin Soul groove at others. Titles include "Now", "Carmela", "What", "Arw", "Deadalus", "Hi", "Walkin", "Zee Pee", "Mio", and "Fiebre De Tu Amor".

Various — King New Breed Rhythm & Blues Vol 2 – Irrestible R&B Dance Tracks From One Of The Biggest & Baddest Indie Labels Of Them All ... CD
King/Kent (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
A long-awaited follow-up to one of our favorite compilations of King Records soul music – a set that does a perfect job of showing the label's strong roots in R&B, and it's important force in 60s soul! The package offers up tracks with a really great sound – definitely the grittier edge than you'd expect from the R&B in the title, yet lots of "new breed" styles as well – a more mature, more soul-based approach to the grooves that offers up a great way to harness the raw energy at the core! The set's filled with rare gems from old King, Federal, and DeLuxe label singles – including some overlooked work by bigger name singers – and titles include "Two Hearts" by The King Pins, "I'm Tore Down" by Freddie King, "Send Me A Picture Baby" by Mel Williams, "Love Man" by Hal Hardy, "Geneva" by Eugene Church, "Wild Child" by Donnie Elbert, "Your Letter" by Willie Wright & His Sparklers, "Say Hey Pretty Baby" by Lula Reed, "Let Me Walk With You" by Eddie Kirk, "Stop Talking To Your Child" by James Duncan, "It Hurts Inside" by The 5 Royales, "Let's Have A Good Time" by The Hi Tones, and "When You Move You Lose" by Lee Shot Williams.

Various — Memphis Boys – The Story Of American Studios ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
The first-ever tribute to the legendary American Studios – the late 60s Memphis powerhouse that was as important to the sound of the south as Fame, Stax, and Hi Records! American did work for a number of different labels, and had their own brief imprint as well – and like their better-known contemporaries, they had a core house band who could provide killer backup to just about anyone – as you'll hear from the great range of music in this collection! Like Fame, who started in soul and picked up a lot of rock business as the 60s moved on, American had a great way of crossing barriers between music – and really helping unite the sounds of the time through their legendary production work and super-sensitive instrumentation. The CD's an accompaniment to the similarly-titled book by Roben Jones, but comes with almost enough great notes to make for a book itself – and titles include "Nine Pound Steel" by Joe Simon, "You've Got My Mind Messed Up" by James Carr, "I'm In Love" by Wilson Pickett, "More Than I Can Stand" by Bobby Womack, "Let's Do It Over" by LC Cooke, "Suspicious Minds" by Mark James, "Born A Woman" by Sandy Posey, "The Letter" by The Box Tops, "Shake A Tail Feather" by James & Bobby Purify, "Son Of A Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield, "Skinny Legs & All" by Joe Tex, "Funky Street" by Arthur Conley, and "Suzy Do It Better Than You" by Clay Hammond.

Don Bryant — Don Bryant Singles & More ... CD
New Copy .... Early April, 2013 (delayed)
An excellent compilation of raw Memphis soul – from one of the rarest singers on the famous Hi Records label! In the years before Hi Records had big hits with singers like Al Green and Ann Peebles, and when they were still mostly messing around with pop instrumental tunes, the label was fortunate enough to have the talents of the great singer Don Bryant – a rich-voiced southern singer with a mix of styles who could easily slip into the styles of singers like Tyrone Davis, Otis Redding, Johnny Taylor, and Wilson Pickett. Bryant cut a number of singles for Hi, plus one album entitled Precious Soul – and all his released work is contained here, as well as a number of rare demos, unissued tracks, and titles cut as duets with singer Marion Brittnam. The massive 52 track set is a key glimpse at the career of this underrecognized talent – and the 2CDs worth of material span nearly 10 years of Bryant's work. Titles include "It's So Hard To Put You Down", "Slip Away", "She's Lookin Good", "You're A Wonderful One", "Did You Ever Have The Blues", "The Call Of Distress", "My Baby", "Star Of Love", "You Cause Me To Wonder", "It's So Lonely Being Me", and "What Are You Doing To My World?".

Quiet Elegance — Quiet Elegance Singles & More ... CD
New Copy .... Early April, 2013 (delayed)
The complete Hi Records recordings of Quiet Elegance – a great 70s soul female trio, formed by two former members of The Glories, and one of Martha & The Vandellas, who recorded for Hi with Willie Mitchell handling some of their best recordings! The girls have a style that's similar to Willie's work with Al Green on the first batch of tunes – and which then opens into more of an Emotions-like style on later tracks – all the while sticking to a strong female harmony sound that never falls into the cloying style of other girl groups of the time. This is great stuff – the kind of lost soul that needs further discovering – something that's easy to do, given the set's great notes, and inclusion of rare bonus tracks. Titles include "I Need Love", "I'm Afraid Of Losing You", "Mama Said", "I Need Love", "You've Got My Mind Messed Up", "Roots Of Love", "After You", "How's Your Love Life?", and "Tired Of Being Alone".

new Geater Davis — Lost Soul (with download) ... LP
House of Orange/Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP .... $15.99 19.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Don't Marry A Fool", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Love You", "I Know My Baby Loves Me", "I Can Hold My Own", "Cold Love (long version)", "I'll Get By", "I'll Play The Blues For You", "Breath Taking Girl", and a killer long take on "For Your Precious Love".

new Max Middleton/Robert Ahwai & Dick Morrissey — Another Sleeper/Cape Wrath ... CD
Harvest/Vocalion (UK), 1979. New Copy 2 CDs .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet fusion from the end of the 70s – two great Harvest Records albums, packaged together in a single set! Another Sleeper is a killer from keyboardist Max Middleton and guitarist Robert Ahwai – a set that has a tight funky feel on most numbers – very much in the most soulful American styles of the time, with some of the impeccable placement that you'd also find on Japanese soul fusion classics from the 70s! Ahwai's guitar is nice and compressed – never overdone, and a perfect accompaniment for Middletone's keyboards as they slide alongside some nicely tight grooves. Titles include "Snake Hips", "Plane Sailing", "Pacific Mist", "Soliloquy", "Hi Jinx", and "Dance By The Light Of The Moon". Cape Wrath is an album of similar vintage – again with great arrangements by Max Middleton, whose keyboards slide in nicely alongside the lead solos of Dick Morrissey on saxes and Jim Mullen on lead guitar! Rhythms have a nice soulful groove – lots of inspiration from the best America R&B fusion sides of the time – with less of the progressive elements you might have expected in Morrissey a few years before. There's a great CTI/Kudu vibe throughout – and titles include "Cape Wrath", "Bristol Boogie", "Song For Carla", "Soul Eyes", "Night Song", and a cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day".

new Albert Washington — Sad & Lonely ... LP
Eastbound, 1973. Used .... $48.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure bit of heavy soul – and the only vocal album on the jazz-based Eastbound imprint of Detroit's legendary Westbound Records! Albert's a blues artist, and sings in a soulful electric style that's similar to some of the Stax work of Albert King – but which has a bit more of a funk twist to it. Albert's vocals are definitely in the bluesy mode, but the backing is more in a Memphis soul style, with hints of Stax production styles in the mix, and lots of swirling organ underneath the vocals, in that Hi Records mode from the early 70s. Titles include "You're Messing Up My Mind", "Mischievous", "Feel The Need", "I Can't Stand It No More", "No Matter What The Cost Might Be", and "My Mother's Prayer". A pretty solid soul album all the way through – with a strong deep soul feel that's different than the usual Westbound/Eastbound bag!
(Cover has a cut corner, a bit of splitting, and a stain near the bottom and side edge. Record is a white label, with a few light marks – but is clean overall.)

new Various — This Is My Thing! – Deep Funk/Jazz Breaks/Hip Hop/Afrosoul – Selected By Tobias Kirmayer ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 2007. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Contemporary grooves, but all pretty darn funky – thanks to an excellent track selection by Tobias Kirmayer – the same guy who brought us the excellents Movements collections! A few of the titles here are of older vintage, but most are pulled from the same deep funk underground that Kirmayer services with his Tramp Records label – groups steeped in the styles of the 60s and 70s underground, but who serve up new work that's filled with plenty of funky roots! Despite the wide range of styles promised in the title, most of the titles here are on the grittier side of the spectrum – which is a good thing for us – and even the few tracks that are a bit more programmed still work with plenty of soulful and jazzy elements to keep things real throughout. Titles include "Nothin But A Party" by The Blenders, "Get Clean" by The Nitesounds, "Skins Funk" by Skin Williams & His Dominoes, "Bubbles" by The Boogoos, "Violet" by Hi-Fly Orchestra, "Rhythmo" by Dusty, "Get High" by Dr Sonnenschein, "Barbados Stew" by Caldonia, "First Time Around" by Sagaflex & Rudy Tee, and "Trip To Afrika" by Baccarola.

Starlite/El (UK), 1954. New Copy .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
The first-ever album from the legendary Hi-Lo's – a landmark indie debut that went onto transform the sound of vocal harmony in the 20th century! The record's got a subtle brilliance that's hard to catch at first – a way of putting together the tunes that's often only slightly different than some of the group's contemporaries, but which already shows the rich talents that leader Gene Puerling would bring to later vocal experiments with Singers Unlimited in the 70s. As with most of the group's famous records, backings here are by Frank Comstock – perfectly poised on the gentle tunes, and nicely jazzy on the more swinging ones! Titles include "June in January", "Little White Lies", "I Don't Want to Cry Anymore", "She's Funny that Way", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Island of Desire", "You Brought a New Kind Of Love", "Fools Rush In", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Where Are You", and "You Can't Hardly Get Them No More".

new Sandpipers — Guantanamera ... LP
A&M, 1967. Used .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
The landmark first album from The Sandpipers – a set that not only sent big ripples through 60s pop in general, but which also really transformed the sound of male harmony groups at the time! The trio have a great way of mixing together jazz harmonies learned in the generation of the Four Freshmen and The Hi-Los with some of the folksy modes used by 60s groups of the folk revival – yet also manage their own weird dark space too, partly through the use of some slight Latin and Spanish touches that resonate perfectly with the A&M Records aesthetic of the time! The approach is heard famously in their sublime reading of "Guantanamera" – but the whole album is wonderful, and other tracks include "La Mer", "Things We Said Today", "Strangers In The Night", "What Makes You Dream, Pretty Girl?", and a sublime vocal rendition of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". Arrangements by Mort Garson and Nick DeCaro, too!

new Archie Shepp — Attica Blues Big Band Live At The Palais Des Glaces ... CD
Blue Marge (France), 1979. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 24.99 Out Of Stock
Attica Blues, and beyond – a great late 70s performance that has Archie Shepp turning the clock back towards that famous album – but also making some very new grooves with a richly expanded lineup! The double-length set was recorded in Paris, in front of a very lively crowd – and it's honestly one of Shepp's most dynamic records from the time – definitely inspired by all the freedom he'd had in the French scene for the previous decade – yet also brought together with a great sense of focus too. The lineup is excellent – with vocals from Joe Lee Wilson and Irene Datcher – trumpets from Malachi Thompson, Charles McGhee, and Roy Burrowes; trombones from Charles Greenlee, Dick Griffin, and Steve Turre; reeds from Marion Brown, James Ware, and Marvin Blackman; plus piano from Art Matthews, some added strings, great percussion, and piano, tenor, and soprano sax from Shepp himself! Ray Copeland directs the group – giving it the hip focus of his few key recordings like this – and titles include "Star Love", "Moon Bees", "Attica Blues" (in two parts), "Steam", "Quiet Dawn", "Hi Fly", "U-Jaama", "Ballad For A Child", "Simone", "Crucificado", :A Change Has Come Over Me", "Goodbye Sweet Pops", and "Skippin'".

new Various — Goldwax Story Vol 2 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the greatest deep soul labels ever – the legendary Goldwax Records, a smaller company that languished in the shadows of Stax and Hi Records during their glory years! Like so many small labels in cities that were important to soul music, Goldwax seemed to have an amazing talent for picking up all the bits that Stax and Hi left behind – recording artists who were every bit as good as the bigger stars from Memphis, but who also seemed to benefit even more from the personal sound, and richer recording quality they got from the label. The most legendary figure to record for Goldwax was James Carr, and the work on this set follows very much in Carr's tradition – a deeply burning, extremely heartfelt approach to southern soul – one that even leaves some of the bigger names of the scene in the dust! The set features 24 tracks in all, including a number of unreleased tracks – and it's packaged with a great set of notes on this legendary imprint! Titles include "I Never Loved A Woman" by Spencer Wiggins, "Crying Baby Baby Baby" by Percy Milem, "Welcome Home Baby" by Barbara Perry, "Peace Of Mind" by The Ovations, "Country Style" by Dorothy Williams, "Good Times" by George & Greer, "Toddlin" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "I Ain't Gonna Cheat On You No More" by Wee Willie Walker, "When You Look In The Mirror" by Eddie Jefferson, "The Side Wind" by The Lyrics, "Darling" by The Vel Tones, and "A Man Needs A Woman" by OB McClinton.

The great second album from The Bo-Keys – the stellar Memphis combo that's a mix of younger players and veteran session musicians from of the vaunted Hi Records scene of the classic era – who deliver a straight up knockout with Got To Get Back! We dug the group's earlier work, but this one really raises the bar. It's not so much a throwback to the late 60s and 70s golden era of Memphis and other points southern soul as it is a modern statement on the sounds longevity – committed with the purest authenticity. There's funky and smouldering soul instrumentals and vocal numbers with an incredible lineup of guests – including the great Otis Clay, plus Percy Wiggins, William Bell and Charlie Musselwhite. The grooviest work so far from the Hi-Fly Orchestra – a set that moves even farther past the sublime territory of their debut, into a really classic blend of soul jazz and Latin rhythms – produced to perfection with a wonderfully solid feel! Instrumentation here is all live – a blend of sax, flute, trombone, Fender Rhodes, piano, and plenty of percussion – all handled with a feel that takes us back to some of our favorite territory on Verve Records from the 60s, those wonderful records that blended elements from the Latin underground with some of the harder jazz leanings of the period – a legacy these guys are happy to add to with their wonderful grooves. Miriam Aida guests on vocals on two cuts, but most titles are instrumental – and tunes include "Afro Boo", "Carioquinha", "Polonesa", "Mrs Shing A Ling", "Hi Fly Stomp", "Mambo Atomico", and a surprisingly groovy cover of "Crosstown Traffic".

new Carol Sloane — Little Girl Blue (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1959. New Copy .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from vocalist Carol Sloane – material recorded with a very groovy guitar-based group, in the years before her better-known sides on Columbia Records! The style here is quite intimate – as Sloane's mostly singing in a small combo with guitar from either Chuck Wayne or Bucky Pizzarelli, both players with an open-toned sort of sound that really helps color in the vocals nicely. Marky Markowitz plays a bit of trumpet, but usually in a laidback way – and as on the album Hush-A-Bye, these sides were originally recorded by Larry Elgart, but never issued at the time! The material's making a first appearance here on the CD, augmented with one track that features Elgart's full orchestra – and titles include "Bewitched", "I've Got The World On A String", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Mood Indigo", "Walkin", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "Danny Boy", and "What's New".

new Various — Snowboy Presents Hi-Hat – The Worlds No 1 Real Jazz Dance Session ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 1990s. New Copy .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Snowboy returns with another batch of grooves in the Hi Hat series – the first volume we've heard under that name in awhile – and while the sound is still great, the format here is a bit different than before! The style this time around is heavily jazzy – and pulled from records that are even more obscure than those used on previous volumes – mostly relatively recent recordings from the past decade or so, but those which were ignored the first time around – making the music here seem even more fresh! Most of the numbers are titles that were buried in more conventional records, but which stand out as modern jazz dance tracks – keeping the spirit of modal, hardbop, and Latin-styled jazz grooves alive and well on the dancefloor – as testified by the album's photos from Snowboy's Hi Hat club night! Titles include "Sunny Day (live)" by Jon Lucien, "Speed Trap" by Peter King, "If I Perish" by Terrell Stafford, "Our Man In Havana" by Cubana Bop, "Seven Steps To Heaven" by World Saxophone Quartet, "Caribbean Fire Dance" by Bobby Sanabria & Ascension, "Blue Bossa" by McCoy Tyner Latin Big Band, and "Fical Mal Com Deus" by Airto.

There's never been a record of such scattered, skittish darkness – and even though short songs like "The Fox", "Forced Laugh", "Felch", "My Spirit", and "Loss" are arresting, the whole thing's magnificently capped off by the extended percussion jam "Winter Hill" – a tune that sounds like a batucada group trying to drum their way across a post-apocalyptic landscape!

ECM (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Spare sonic textures and mellow musical moments from Eivind Aarset – a great session for ECM, and maybe one of his most compelling records in years! This ECM album has a feel that's a bit warmer than some of Aarset's previous work for the Jazzland – not in a way that's commercial at all, given that the music is still pretty darn abstract – but just somehow more organic – in ways that almost feel acoustic at points, even though most of the instrumentation is electric – possibly because of these bass-heavy shapes that often move at the back and bottom of the mix. Eivind plays guitars, electronics, samples, and percussion – with help from Jan Bang on dictaphone and additional samples – on titles that icnlude "The Beauty Of Decay", "Homage To Greene", "Black Silence", "Close", "Reactive", and "The Whispering Forest".

Ahmed Abdul-Malik — Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik ... LP
New Jazz, 1961. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Amazing stuff from Ahmed Abdul-Malik – one of the early 60s most enigmatic jazz talents! Malik was Thelonious Monk's bassist for a few years, but by the time of this record, he was working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz, and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues".

Muhal Richard Abrams — Complete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint & Soul Note (8CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 8CDs .... $39.99
Some of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – an amazing run of eight records for the Black Saint/Soul Note label – rich in fresh colors, tones, and new musical ideas! There's a sensitivity to some of these records that you don't always get with Abrams – a personal feeling that brings in a much-needed warmth to his complex compositional forms – often in collaboration with other players on the Chicago scene, but also with a wider range of avant players, especially from New York – where Abrams would have a great influence in the 80s. The lineup of musicians here is wonderful – a virtual who's-who of the jazz left at the time, at least from an American perspective – with performances from George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Amina Myers, Thurman Barker, Baikida Carroll, Andrew Cyrille, Craig Harris, Stanton Davis, Marty Erlich, Dick Griffin, Cecil Bridgewater, Fred Hopkins, Dierdre Murray, and so many others. The set features 8 full albums, each in a tiny LP-styled sleeve – and titles include Siphumonesty, Mama & Daddy, Blues Forever, Rejoicing With The Light, View From Within, Hearinga Suite, Blu Blu Blu, and Think All Focus One.

Cannonball Adderley — Accent On Africa ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good .... $14.99
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. And oh yeah, David Axelrod produced the whole thing too! Titles include "Gumba Gumba", "Up & At It", "Hamba Nami", "Ndolima", and "Lehadima".
(Rainbow label pressing. Side 1 has marks that click a bit on tracks one and two. Cover has light wear and some staining.)

Cannonball Adderley — Somethin' Else ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used .... $2.99
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark".
(BMG Direct pressing.)
