Herman Kelly & LifePercussion Explosion! ... LP
Alston, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The percussion-heavy soul gem from Herman Kelly & Life – recorded in both Brazil & Miami – and awash with killer drum work all the way through! The album's a key part of the Miami sound especially – and really shows the way that city's 70s funk scene used congas heavily – really filling up the middle of a cut with even more energy than usual! The album's best known for the classic sample cut "Dance to the Drummer's Beat" – which is offered up here in a nice extended version, with a long percussion break that makes it even tastier than usual – and the record's also got a few other uptempo cuts like "Who's the Funky DJ?" and "Do The Handbone" – plus the tracks "Time After Time", "A Refreshing Love", and "Share Your Love". New VariousOST – Original Block Party Edits ... LP
EMI (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 2LP Gatefold .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
New edits of older funk tracks – served up here in a mode that go down perfectly in a classic South Bronx street party! The mixers here have gone for a real back-to-basics style of edit – used almost as an homage to the earliest work by American DJs on the New York scene, and often in a way that extends the breaks and extrapolates the best elements of the tunes even more strongly! Titles include "Make Me Believe In You (Ashley Beedle/Phil Asher Black Science orchestra re-edit)" by Patti Jo, "Shack Up (Touche From The Wiseguys bonus chops)" by Banbarra, "Soul Drummers (Tim Love Lee re-edit)" by Ray Barretto, "Family Tree (Norman Cook disco edit)" by Family Tree, "Dance To The Drummer's Beat (DJ Harvey's nite club edit)" by Herman Kelly & Life, "Les Fleur (Fug re-edit)" by Minnie Riperton, "Funkanova (Fat Camp Brass Rubbing)" by Wood Brass & Steel, "I Got Lifted (Mischief Brew re-edit)" by George McCrae, and "Odyssey (Zongamin re-edit)" by Johnny Harris. New VariousTK Records Story Vol 1 ... CD
Gold Legion, Late 70s. New Copy .... Out Of Stock
A cool collection of grooves from the legendary TK Records label – and one that goes way past the obvious hits that topped the charts back in the 70s! The package is less the overall story of TK, than it is a great reminder that there's some really funky nuggets lurking deep in the label's mighty catalog – killer tunes that show that the Miami club sound of the late 70s was firmly rooted in funk and deep soul of the earlier part of the decade – at a level that still stayed pretty funky, even well into the disco generation! There's some great gems here – and titles include "Lady Fingers" by Tony Middleton, "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas, "Funk Reaction" by Lonnie Smith, "Harlem Nocturne" by Wildflower, "Don't Turn Away" by Midnite Flite, "Star Cruiser" by Gregg Diamond, "Funk Machine" by Funk Machine, "Hey Sexy Dancer" by Rocky Mizell, "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly & Life, and "Do What You Wanna Do" by T Connection.
