John Betsch Society — Earth Blossom ... CD
Strata East/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1974. New Copy .... $18.99
A beautiful session of spiritual soul jazz – and one of the rarer albums on the legendary Strata East label! The obscure combo is led by drummer/percussionist John Betsch – and instrumentation includes guitar, piano, electric piano, and reeds – all used with plenty of warm touches, and a few sharp edges – all very much in the best Strata East mode of the time! The tracks have a soaring sort of sound – similar to some of the Keno Duke material on the label, but also touched with some trippier edges too – a great blend that really brings a lot of depth to the session, and which has made this one of our favorite Strata sides over the years. Titles include "Song For An Untitled Lady", "Ra", "Get Up & Go", and "Ode To Ethiopia".

Donald Byrd — Chant (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1961. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
A Donald Byrd treasure – and an album that was almost left in the vaults by Blue Note, until they briefly released it at the end of the 70s! The cover and title are a bit unfamiliar, but the music is right up there with Byrd's classic sessions with baritonist Pepper Adams – a great player here, with a deftness on his horn that's incredible – matching all the sharp changes and soulful undercurrents of Byrd's sparkling trumpet! There's a nice hard sound to the whole thing – almost the raw power of the pair's albums for the Warwick label – and as with those, Herbie Hancock is on piano – giving the whole thing an excellent soul jazz groove that really kicks the main soloists into action! Titles include "Great God", "I'm An Old Cowhand", "That's All", "You're Next", and "Chant".

Guts — Paradise For All ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99
Dirty beats with some sweet earthy touches – and a record that we like a lot more than usual for this sort of thing! Guts mixes it up with a host of classic influences – bits of spiritual jazz, cinematic soundscapes, 70s funk, dancehall, and electro – but all wrapped into something nicely fresh, especially given their great sense of melody throughout – which makes most tracks a lot more tuneful than you might expect! Titles include "Come Closer", "Ghetto In Paradise", "Freedom", "Lassier Lucie Faire", "What Is Love", "Senza", "Mi Isla Tropical", and "Little Black Cat".

Herbie Hancock — Takin' Off (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1962. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
Herbie Hancock is certainly Takin Off at this point in his career – stepping into the limelight with an excellent batch of soul jazz tunes, including the first recording of his classic "Watermelon Man", the one track that probably put all his kids through school! Although that one went on to become a standard within a few short years in 60s jazz, it still sounds great here in the original – a very fresh take on the sound of soul jazz in the 60s – offered up here in a 7 minute version that has more sharp soloing than most other takes on the tune! The group here is great too – with Dexter Gordon on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the tracks are all also originals by a young Herbie – including "Watermelon Man", "The Maze", "Driftin", "Three Bags Full", "Alone & I", and "Empty Pockets".

Joe Henderson — In N Out (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
A stone killer from the early Blue Note years of tenorist Joe Henderson – a key example of why the label had so much faith in him right from the start, and why Henderson's horn was quite different than so many other players of the 60s! There's a sharp edge here, but there's also a soulful sense of swing – that balance that Joe had more than most of his contemporaries – and which he only continued to develop as the years went on. Echoes of "new thing" modes lie in the background of the record, but upfront things have a sharp 60s Blue Note punch – thanks in part to a great lineup that also includes Kenny Dorham on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Henderson's tone is rough and young – but in a great way, one that's perfect for the exploratory nature of his original tunes on the set, and which matches the mood of Dorham's compositions as well. Tracks include "In N Out", "Short Story", "Brown's Town", and "Punjab".

Andrew Hill — Black Fire (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
Insanely wonderful music from Andrew Hill – a lean, stripped-down session that has Hill working at his firey best – in a space that's somewhere between the "new thing" recordings of Jackie McLean, and the brooding brilliance of Andrew's later Smokestack session! The group here has some key figures fleshing out the sound – a young Joe Henderson, blowing tenor with a very edgey quality – the very versatile Richard Davis on bass – and the great Roy Haynes on drums, very much at his most fluid interpretation of rhythm! The whole set's pretty darn great – one of the more mindblowing Blue Notes you'll ever hope to buy – and tracks include "Pumpkin", "Subterfuge", "Cantarnos", and "McNeil Island".

Andrew Hill — Lift Every Voice (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
A rare and beautiful Andrew Hill session, and one of the classic Blue Note entries into the "jazz and voices" sound that the label pioneered with Donald Byrd and Eddie Gale. Hill leads a core jazz group that includes Woody Shaw, Carlos Garnett, Richard Davis, and Freddie Waits – and the group is backed by a vocal ensemble with a very spiritual vibe. The sound is a lot more hip than the Donald Byrd & Voices albums, and the playing of the core jazz group is very very soulful – along the lines of Hill's Grass Roots album, which was also from the same period. The record's similar to the Max Roach/Billy Harper vocal work around the same time, and titles include "Ghetto Lights", "Hey Hey", "Two Lullabies", and "Love Chant". A very unique album for Andrew Hill!

Jacaranda Muse — September Sun ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99
A pretty compelling little quartet – a jazz combo from Zimbabwe, and one who play with a lot of spiritual jazz overtones – yet also throw in some occasional vocals in English! Instrumentation is pretty unique – like some of the hipper experiments on Strata East in the 70s – with a mix of piano, mbira, cello, alto sax, percussion, and marimba – all used in shifting rhythmic passages that have a really hypnotic feel – almost the same sort of slow-building energy of some of Phil Cohran's classic recordings, but with a bit more focus on the vocal tunes. Singer Vimbai Mukarati is great – with a voice that makes his lyrics way more than just an afterthought – and titles include "Let You Go", "Thirty Five", "September Sun", "Kunakirwa", "Moonlight", "Free Fall", "Coming Home", and "Underwater Subway".

Lee Morgan — Search For The New Land (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99
A brilliant album that proves that even at the height of his success, Lee Morgan was one of the freest thinkers on Blue Note – always coming up with fresh ideas that continued to grow his talents! The first cut on the album is keep roof of that fact – the title track "Search For The New Land" – a beautiful 16 minute exploration of modal jazz themes, with an unusual stop/start device as a means of ushering solos by different bandmates – including Wayne Shorter on tenor, Grant Green on guitar, and Herbie Hancock on piano! The approach is unlike anything that Morgan ever did before – and unlike most of other Blue Note as well – and it also benefits from great rhythmic help from Reggie Workman on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Other tunes are a bit more conventional, but still pretty special – like some of Morgan's inventive work on the Rajah albums – with titles that include "The Joker", "Melancholee", "Mr. Kenyatta" and "Morgan The Pirate".

Rongetz Foundation — Brooklyn Butterfly Session ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
A stone smoker from Rongetz Foundation – and a record that's even better than anything else we've heard from them! This time around, the sound is very live – recorded in the US, with help from heavyweights like Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax and Bruce Williams on alto – plus killer vocals from Gregory Porter on two tracks that are worth the price of the album alone! The sound is totally smoking – soul jazz, with a spiritual undercurrent – and on the cuts "Hard Bop Merry Go Round" and "Gogo Soul", Porter gets some of his best backing ever – a mode that almost sounds better than his already-great albums! A few other cuts feature vocals by other singers – and titles inclu de "Eunice K", "Sam's Intro", "A Composer Of Modern Day", "The Braggart", and "Freaking Sunshine".

Solis Lacus — Solis Lacus ... CD
EMI/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1975. New Copy .... $16.99
A Fender Rhodes treasure – the one and only album from Solis Lacus – a hip 70s Belgian group who were contemporaries of Placebo – and work here in very similar modes! The album's resplendent in Rhodes lines from Michel Herr – a great keyboardist with an excellent ear for space, sound, and timing – working here in ways that are never too overdone, with a group who know how to take off, but never get too jammingly overdone – nor too rock-fusion either – which really keeps things soulful throughout! The sextet lineup includes trumpet, tenor, soprano sax, Rhodes, and lots of percussion – and as with Placebo, there's a nice structure to the rhythms on most of these cuts – ways of hitting a groove that are very different than American Rhodes work of the time – and which makes a record like this a wonderful new discovery in sound! Titles include "Utopic Cities", "Little Green Man", "Sea Of Tranquility", "Remake", "Open Air", and "Peace Please".

Harold Vick — Steppin' Out (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1963. New Copy .... $26.99
A monster! This is one of the rare few albums that tenorist Harold Vick ever cut as a leader – and it's pretty darn great all the way through! Vick is probably best known as the sax player with Jack McDuff during his mid 60s glory years – and this album captures him a similar mode, working hard and fast in an organ combo with Big John Patton at the keys, Grant Green on guitar, and Ben Dixon on drums. The group's augmented by Blue Mitchell, who solos in the front with Vick – and the album includes a great version of Vick's "Our Miss Brooks", plus "Steppin Out", "Vicksville", and "Trimmed In Blue".

Duke Pearson — Phantom (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1969. New Copy .... $26.99 Just Sold Out!
Incredible work from pianist Duke Pearson – a darkly-tinged album of grooves that surpasses all his other gems for Blue Note! The record showcases some great work from Bobby Hutcherson – slid into the mix in a really sly way, so that his jazzy vibes color all the tunes with an edgey feeling that's missing from most of Duke's other albums. The group's slightly largeish – with Jerry Dodgion on flute and alto, Sam Brown and Al Gafa on guitar, plus added Latin percussion on a number of tracks – but although the larger group format often made for softer edges on other Pearson sessions from the time, the mix here is quite different – at a level that works in complicated rhythms, rich colors and tones, and warm harmonics that have a slightly unsettling undercurrent. The album's worth it alone for the mighty title cut "The Phantom" – but the whole thing's great, and other tracks include "Bunda Amerela", "Say You're Mine" and "Blues for Alvina".

Various — Digging The Blogosphere Vols 1 & 2 – The Best Underground Soul, Hip Hop Jazz & Future Beats Discovered On The Web ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (Netherlands), 2013. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99 Just Sold Out!
Digital music in a physical realm – a great little project that collects together a range of groundbreaking sounds from the online music scene – then puts them together in a well-presented compilation! The music here is all pretty darn fresh – a wicked batch of 21st Century soul, hip hop, nujazz, and more – all the sort that might have been issued on labels like Compost or Sonar Kollektiv a decade ago, but which hardly makes it on record these days! Yet thanks to the great efforts of Heavenly Sweetness, these grooves are getting some great exposure – almost like catching a great slice of Gilles Peterson's radio show. 2CD package features both volumes 1 & 2 – 29 titles that include "Drum Talking" by Mo Kolours, "Grandma" by Bobby Blunt, "Fall In Love" by Badbadnotgood, "Hold On" by KRTS, "Una Peripecia" by Buddy Sativa, "Journey Through My Mind" by Bug, "Conflict Of A Man" by Erimaj, "Kalimba Song" by Abjo, "Controlled Feelings" by Opolopo Voltage, "Where You Gone" by INT, "Journey To The Shore" by Dopegems, "Muscles" by Bonnie Banane, "Freak Out" by Natronix, "YBMJ" by Monkeyrobot, "Dealing" by Up High Collective, "Paintball" by Monster Sneaker, and "All Matter" by Modlee & Vlooper.

new Blundetto — Warm My Soul ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2012. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Blundetto's groove is even nicer than before – honed through their work on singles and remix efforts – and turned towards a rich array of global roots that really deepen the sound of this album! There's as much 70s African and Jamaican influence going on here as there is a spiritual jazz side – both filtered through 21st Century modes that rework the primal elements, and come up with a fresh new groove – yet one that's always respectful to the originators! Guests on the set include the Akale Horns, Shawn Lee, Tommy Guerrero, and Jahdan Blackkamoore – and titles include "Hercules", "Rocroy", "It's All About", "Walk Away Now", "Treat Me Like That", and "I'll Be Home Later".
(Really great limited heavy vinyl pressing – with cool textured fabric cover!)

new Grant Green — Matador (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic mid 60s album from Grant Green – but one that never got its due originally, because it was unreleased at the time – and didn't come out until a Japanese version in the late 70s! Despite that oddly long gap, Matador is truly one Grant's best ever records – a really inventive session that goes way past his standard soul jazz roots – and which really shows the guitarist stretching out towards future styles of jazz! The session's a spare quartet date – with Green's guitar playing modal grooves over rhythm by by his incredible combo – with Bob Cranshaw on bass, Elvin Jones on drums and the incomparable McCoy Tyner on piano – blocking out bold changes that really drive the record strongly. Cuts are long, and there's a freewheeling quality to the material that's only ever matched by some of the Grant Green/Larry Young sessions from the same time – especially the Street Of Dreams Record. Titles include "Matador", "Bedouin", Green Jeans", and a killer version of "My Favorite Things", done in a very Coltrane-esque style.
Also available: Matador ... CD $8.99

new Andrew Hill — Dance With Death (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful session by Andrew Hill – recorded in 1968, but issued only briefly in 1981 – and out of print for years! The session is a key one in understanding Hill's work – as it's a bridge between the arch modernism of his early Blue Note sides, and the more soul-oriented playing of the Grass Roots album. The group features Joe Farrell and Charles Tolliver on horns – both of whom open up the sound at the same time they're giving it a nice bottom – and the rest of the combo includes Victor Sproles on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. The album's an enchanting one – lighter than earlier years, but still with a compelling vision that's all Hill's own. Titles include "Dance With Death", "Love Nocturne", "Black Sabbath", "Partitions", and "Fish N Rice".

new Bobby Hutcherson — Oblique (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Bobby Hutcherson's greatest records ever – and a session that never got released at the time! The album's an excellent quartet session, one that's very much in the best spirit of Bobby's great Happenings album on Blue Note – and it features a similar group that includes Hutcherson on vibes, Herbie Hancock on piano, Albert Stinson on bass, and Joe Chambers, one of Hutcherson's best accompanists from the 60s, on drums. The format's a bit more modal than Happenings – and the set features 6 wonderful little tracks that mix together the "new thing" sound of earlier Hutcherson Blue Notes, with some of the nascent soulfulness that started creeping into his work at the end of the 60s. The album was recorded in 1967, but only first issued in Japan in at the end of the 70s – and then later in the US, and even then only briefly – but we'd still rank the set as one of Bobby's best for Blue Note! Titles include "Til Then", "Mr Joy", "Subtle Neptune", and "Theme From Blow Up".

new Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band — Rubber Orchestras ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2011. New Copy 2LPGatefold .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice one from soul poet Anthony Joseph and his expansively stylistic, yet tightly grooving Spasm Band – bits of calypso and otherwise tropically toasted funk and Afro Soul – produced by the great Malcolm Catto! We've never seen the band in action, but this album has a very live feel – and it's a great approach. Joseph's storytelling style is great, too – the lyricism is impressive, but so is his charismatic delivery. Includes "Griot", "Started Off As A Dancer", "She Is The Sea", "Cobra", "Tanty Lynn", "Speak The Name", "Bullet In The Rocks", "Generations" and more.

new Jackie McLean — Hipnosis (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal record for Jackie McLean – a set that still has some of the spirit and lineup of his "new thing" years, but which also takes on a more spiritual vibe as well – clearly pointing the direction towards McLean's music in the 70s! The album's one of those unusual Blue Notes that was recorded in the 60s, but wasn't issued until many years later – but given the date and the sound, we'd put this one right alongside Jackie's Demon Dance album. The group features excellent trombone from Grachan Moncur, plus Lamont Johnson on piano, Scotty Holt on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and titles include "Slow Poke", "Hipnosis", "The Breakout", and "Back Home".

new Sam Rivers — Fuchsia Swing Song (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest modern moments on Blue Note – ever! From the cover, to the compositions, to the playing on the set – the whole album crackles with an unbelievable fire that was hardly ever matched again. A young Sam Rivers leads a quartet that includes Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Anthony Williams on drums – coming together in a sound that's got lots of sharp edges, yet which also beats with an undeniably swinging heart. Rivers blows incredibly on the session – held in check by the rhythm section, and never getting too free (or sloppy, as on some later sides) – and instead hitting these hard tones that really push the envelope of 60s jazz without rewriting the rules entirely. Brilliant all the way through, with tracks that include "Beatrice", "Ellipsis", "Cyclic Episode", and "Downstairs Blues Upstairs".

new Duke Ellington/Charles Mingus/Max Roach — Money Jungle (180 gram pressing) ... LP
United Artists/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1962. New Copy .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
Rarely are such "meeting of the minds" sessions worth any fuss at all – but in this case, the masterful talents of the players turn what should be a snoozy "common denominator" session into a modernist classic that still crackles with excitement after all these years! The real success factor here is Ellington, who was hitting a point in his career when he was really beginning to experiment again – as you'll hear in the beautifully angular piano lines that he lays next to Mingus' bass and Roach's lively drums. The set's nearly all originals, and titles include "Money Jungle", "Le Fleurs Africaines", and "Wig Wise". Very nice!

new Horace Silver — Cape Verdean Blues (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A classic set from Horace Silver – one in which his quintet is expanded by some great guest work from trombonist JJ Johnson! Johnson's at the height of his 60s powers here – blowing with that lean, soulful style that always made any record sparkle – and although he's only on half of the tracks on the date, his presence is more than worth the heavy billing he gets on the cover! Other great members of the group include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, and rhythm from Bob Cranshaw on bass and Roger Humphries on drums – all coming together with that wonderful 60s Silver groove. The set's filled with sweetly grooving originals by Horace – a blueprint for the exotic style of soul jazz he helped to forge at the time – great writing all around, on titles that include "Mo Joe", "Nutville", "Bonita", "The African Queen", and "Pretty Eyes".

new Various — Freedom Jazz France – Spiritual Jazz From The Hexagon 1968 to 1986 ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
One of the hippest, deepest collections of European jazz we've ever heard – a really wonderful set that opens up a whole new side of the French scene of the 60s, 70s, and 80s – filled with music that we've never heard before! Unlike other sets of this nature, which focus on American players overseas – this one is filled with homegrown talent, often working in styles that echo the spiritual and modal sounds of the US underground of the post-Coltrane years – very rich in feeling and righteous in message – freely expressive, but never going too far out to lose their groove! We know some artists here, but not from these recordings – and others are pulled from the kind of totally obscure French albums you'd only find after years of digging around in Paris flea markets. Titles include "Colchiques" by Eddy Louiss, "Doorstep" by Octet De Dreux, "Notes So High" by Stella Levitt, "Ricardo" by Michel Roques, "La Musique D'Orphee" by Chene Noir, "Le Musichien" by Francois Tusques, "Creole Girl" by Noah Howard, "Israel Suite" by Rupture, and "Lido" by Les Prospections.

Blundetto shares compositional credits with the guest, and it has the feel of collaboration with that atmopherically soulful core groove. Really nice work for the Heavenly Sweetness label! Titles including the Blundetto cover of the Bob James classic "Nautilus" plus "Voices", "Mustang", "Mi Condena", "Cuban Shirt", "Party Animals". "White Birds", "Ken Park", "My One Girl", "Bad BadThings" and "Sunset Stroll".

new Elvin Jones — Coalition (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A stunning early set as a leader from Elvin Jones – both a tremendous demonstration of the free energy he let loose after the passing of John Coltrane, and a set that's also still got some key Coltrane-esque elements! As with other Jones albums to follow, Elvin's got some key reedmen on hand – George Coleman on tenor, and Frank Foster on tenor, alto, and bass clarinet – both given plenty of room to run around with long solos on the open space of the record – yet without ever blowing off their heads as much as some of the younger players who'd work with Jones. There's no piano at all on the set – just the rock-slid bass of Wilbur Little, and additional congas from Candido next to Elvin's drums. The tracks have a haunting quality that mixes modal grooving with spare moments, and titles include "Simone", "5/4 Thing", "Shinjitu", and a nice version of "Yesterdays".

This album is far and away one of the greatest ever cut by Brother Jack McDuff – and it's a baroquely complicated batch of funky jazz cuts that's still light years ahead of any other record! The tracks are much longer than you'll find on Jack's other work – and the group plays these lines that are laidback and trippy, yet which still have a tremendous amount of funk in them. Guitar sets the tone, spacing out over the drums of the great Joe Dukes; electric bass rumbles at all the low, dark spots; flute and tenor sax cut some sharp edges in the void; and the organ of Brother Jack comes in over the top, and soars with cosmic lines of sound! The album includes the monster cut "Oblighetto", sampled by Tribe Called Quest years back – plus other amazing groovers, like "Flat Backin", "Moon Rappin", and "Loose Foot".

new Grachan Moncur III — Evolution (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $25.99 Out Of Stock
Landmark material – one of Grachan Moncur's two classic albums for Blue Note, and a session that ranks as one of the best examples of the "new thing" moment in 60s jazz! Grachan's leading a sextet here that includes a number of players that he cut his teeth with in Jackie McLean's great mid 60's group, including McLean himself, Bobby Hutcherson, and a young Tony Williams. Lee Morgan joins in on trumpet – playing with a surprisingly modern tone for the time – and the group works their way through 4 stunning Moncur compositions – "Air Raid", "Evolution", "The Coaster", and "Monk In Wonderland". It's hard to describe the power of these recordings – but thankfully, we don't have to, as one listen to the album will blow you away!

new Various — Freedom Jazz France – Spiritual Jazz From The Hexagon 1968 to 1986 ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
