Har-You Percussion GroupHar-You Percussion Group (yellow colored vinyl) ... LP
1969. New Copy (reissue).... Early May, 2013 (delayed)
A legendary bit of Latin from the New York scene of the 60s – recorded by a host of youthful players working under the direction of percussionist Montego Joe! The group's name is a contraction of "Harlem Youth" – a program in which all players participated, as part of an effort to get kids involved in music uptown – spearheaded by Montego Joe, whose guidance in the set is greatly appreciated! There's a strong Latin Soul vibe running through the set – but one that's different than Joe's other work, a bit more rootsy at times, given all the percussion in the lineup – but warmed up nicely with bits of guitar, trumpet, and alto sax. The album's filled with great groovers – including the classic "Welcome To The Party Jam", and the amazing "Oua-Train" jazz cut, which has a slightly spiritual feel. Other tracks include "Feed Me Good", "Barrets Bag", "Tico", "Ngoma", and "Santa Cruz".
(Limited edition yellow colored vinyl pressing.)

Budos Band — Budos Band ... LP
Daptone, 2005. New Copy .... $11.99
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do".

Cravo E Canela — Preco De Cada Um ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $28.99
A great little Brazilian group from the 70s – one who continues the harmony styles of Sergio Mendes in the 60s, but takes the music into some groovy new directions! The sounds here are more samba than bossa – with guitar and percussion dancing nicely together in the rhythms as group members sing sweetly over the top – and both piano and keyboards adding in some nicely jazzy inflections to the groove, often with the more sophisticated phrasings you might expect in some of the EMI/Odeon work from earlier in the decade. Sivuca joins the group on both accordion and moog (!) – and the whole thing's got a sweetly-grooving style that's totally great! Titles include "Estatutos De Gafiera", "Loteca", "Amor Em Jacuma", " Iboru Iboya", "Beijo Baiano", "O Trem Atrazou", "Asa Branca", and "Fogo Pago".

Experience Unlimited — Free Yourself ... LP
Black Fire, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An early record by Experience Unlimited – better known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". This one's nothing like that stuff – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju. This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness".

new Frank Foster — Loud Minority ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
One of the most amazing albums ever from Frank Foster – a totally righteous set that's light years ahead of his earlier work with the Basie Band! The format here is right up there with the best on Strata East at the time – a large-group session that's filled with some of the hippest players of the early 70s – all coming together with a joyous, spiritual sense of power! Foster's in the lead on tenor and soprano sax, but other players include Cecil Bridgewater and Hannibal Marvin Peterson on trumpets, Harold Mabern on keyboards, Elvin Jones on drums, Dick Griffin on trombone, Stanley Clarke on bass, Airto on percussion, and even Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals! Tracks are all quite long and flowing – spiritual expressions of jazz that rival the greatness of anything recorded for Impules – and titles include "The Loud Minority", "Requiem For Dusty", "JP's Thing", and "EW – Beautiful People".

new Freeborne — Peak Impressions ... LP
Monitor, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the few straight rock records ever issued on the mostly-folk Monitor Records label – a great 60s outing from Freeborne, a group with a sound that's as tripped-out as you might expect from the cover! Instrumentation is heavy on organ and guitars, both acoustic and electric, but there's also some cool percussion too – and interesting use of recorders, in a way that comes across with an ocarina-like charm! Vocals are somewhat soft, but have a dark undercurrent – and there's a really great folk-into-psyche sort of feel to the whole thing. Titles include "Images", "Land Of Diana", "But I Must Return To Frenzy", "Inside People", "Yellow Sky", "Peak Impressions & Thoughts", and "Visions Of My Own".

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound — Want More (plus download) ... LP
Bloodshot, 2011. New Copy .... $15.99 16.98
The second album from Chicago's great raw soul torch carriers JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – their debut for Bloodshot, and a record that's gonna catapult them to the forefront of the live soul scene, in the Chi and everywhere else! The group's proved over the past couple years, via their raw, yet propellant debut album, some great singles, and furious live show schedule, that they're poised to deliver in a bigger way. On Want More they do that and, uh. . .a bit more! JC's a rare singer who can both shout out in a gritty funk mode and coo with charisma on slower soul anthems, and the group delivers on both fronts, too. Producer Jimmy Sutton captures them perfectly. The core group features Billy Bungeroth on guitar, Kevin Marks on drums & percussion and Ben Taylor on bass. Includes "Want More", "Everything Will Be Fine", "I Got High", their great cover of "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "Baaadnews", "I Can See Everything", "Sister Ray Charles", "Awake" and more.
(Vinyl version includes code for free downloads.)

new Kool & Together — Kool & Together – Original Recordings 1970 to 1977 ... LP
Heavy Light/Light In The Attic, 1970s. New Copy 2LPGatefold .... $20.99
Blistering funk rock and raw, tightly grooving psych soul from small town Victoria, TX – trailblazing material from Kool & Together. This is an amazing anthology from Heavy Light/Light In The Attic that pulls together material from private press 45s the group put in the early-to-mid 70s and previously unreleased tracks recorded by Texas music legend Huey P Meaux. There's a raw soul, funky drums & percussion core to Kool & Together's style that's really great! Singer Tyrone Sanders doubles as the group's conga player, which is a great touch! There's a demonstrable level of gritty psych soul and rock in the mix, too – wah wah guitar, in particular – but they're much more into a tight, heady groove than the kind of lumbering heft and solo-heavy styles of other Hendrix disciples. It's a family band – the earliest tracks on the set feature Charles Sanders Sr on vocals, with Charles Jr on guitar, Tyrone on conga and Joe Sanders on drums – with the boys trading lead vocals and instrumentation on other later recordings, along with additional players. A great discovery from Heavy Light Records! 19 tracks in all: "Sittin' On A Hot Red Stove", "I Know", "If You Can", "Wino Man", "Magic Words", "Peace Is At Hand", "Better Days", "Fly So High", "Electronic Funk", "Reaching Out", "Hooked On Life", "Blow It Out Your Mind", "Get Your Feet Off The Ground" and more, plus 4 demos: "Escapism Beat", "Hot Pants", "Nassau Beat" and "Wino Man".

Duke Pearson — Phantom (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1969. New Copy .... $26.99
Incredible work from pianist Duke Pearson – a darkly-tinged album of grooves that surpasses all his other gems for Blue Note! The record showcases some great work from Bobby Hutcherson – slid into the mix in a really sly way, so that his jazzy vibes color all the tunes with an edgey feeling that's missing from most of Duke's other albums. The group's slightly largeish – with Jerry Dodgion on flute and alto, Sam Brown and Al Gafa on guitar, plus added Latin percussion on a number of tracks – but although the larger group format often made for softer edges on other Pearson sessions from the time, the mix here is quite different – at a level that works in complicated rhythms, rich colors and tones, and warm harmonics that have a slightly unsettling undercurrent. The album's worth it alone for the mighty title cut "The Phantom" – but the whole thing's great, and other tracks include "Bunda Amerela", "Say You're Mine" and "Blues for Alvina".

Pharoah Sanders — Pharoah Sanders Quintet (aka Pharoah's First) ... LP
ESP, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
If you think that Pharaoh Sanders' genius as a leader first blossomed during his post-Coltrane years on Impulse, you owe it to yourself to check out this early album for ESP – a startlingly great session that offers a whole new side of his talents! The album features 2 side-long tracks – each of them great in their own ways, both in ways that are far different from the later Sanders sound on Impulse! Pharoah's tone here isn't nearly as raspy as on his more famous sides – it's more straightforward, almost Coltrane-esque – and as the long tracks unfold, there's almost a Sonny Rollins-like sense of spontaneous invention, especially on "Bethera", which takes up all of side two. And while we love the spiritual sensibilities of Sanders' classic albums, we also really like the pointedness of this one – not just because it shows a young Pharoah already possessed of greatness not infused by Coltrane, but also because the album's a mostly-inside session that's a real standout in the ESP catalog! The group's unusual too – and features Stan Foster on trumpet, Jane Getz on piano, William Bennett on bass, and Marvin Patillo on percussion. Tracks include "Bethera" and "Seven by Seven".

new Shaolin Afronauts — Quest Under Capricorn ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
A deeper, spacier set from Shaolin Afronauts – and one that goes a bit further into the cosmos, as you might guess from the title and cover art – though it's still firmly rooted in timeless Afro Soul and Funk! Once again, the greatest West African soul, jazz and funk of the 70s provides the most vital inspiration for the group – but the Afronauts go further with the freewheeling jazzy atmosphere on this one – especially on the longer cuts. The majority of tracks run longer than 5 minutes, giving them plenty of evolutionary space to travel, over the funky bedrock that's paved underneath. The horns are fantastic – with nine credited players – along with stellar drums and percussion, guitar, bass, Hammond and Rhodes.Includes "Brooklyn", "Gayanamede Prelude", "Winds Across Gayanamede", "Los Angeles", "Quest Under Capricorn", "End Of A Sun", "Amhara", "Forests Of Io" and "Saturn's Dance". 9 tracks on the vinyl version.

Archie Shepp — Magic Of Ju-Ju (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $14.99
Beautifully balanced 60s work from Archie Shepp – a record that mixes newer freedoms with sharper vision – all wrapped up with some wonderfully intense solo work! As with some of Shepp's other great dates for Impulse at the time, the group's a largeish one – a nonet of players who are arranged tightly at some moments, but set loose on their own at others – in a style that many other leaders would copy in years to come, but never really match as strongly! Trumpet is by Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin, the latter of whom also plays trombone – and other players include Reggie Workman on bass, Beaver Harris and Norman Connors on drums, and added percussion from Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles, and Dennis Charles. Shepp wrote all titles for the date – and there's a great mixture of soulful undercurrents and more angular modern edges in every tune. Titles include "The Magic Of Ju Ju", "You're What This Day Is All About", "Shazam", and "Sorry 'Bout That".

new Swell Maps — Trip To Marineville (with bonus 7" single & download) ... LP
Rough Trade/Secretly Canadian, 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 17.98
A seminal set from The Swell Maps – at one level a record that's completely of its moment, and at another, a completely unique set that's never been matched since! The Swell Maps were part of the UK scene of the punk years, but were already embracing a lot of post-punk energy in their sound – or, in a way, some pre-punk experimentation – as they mixed in some prog-like instrumentation, creative studio production, and a great ear for mixing up modes – in ways that make the record way way different than just the usual full length set from the time! There's lots of odd percussion at times – occasionally quite cacophonous – and a sense of drone that's years ahead of its time – or maybe leftover from the psych years, too – thanks to the presence of Nikki Sudden in the group, who'd explore that side of the music more on his own during the 80s. Epic Soundtracks provides amazing inspiration on drums – and titles include "Vertical Slum", "Spitfire Parade", "Harmony In Your Bathroom", "Don't Throw Ashtrays At Me", "Midget Submarines", and "Bridge Head (part nine)".
(Comes with the inner sleeve and bonus 7" that were with the original record – and a bonus download of the album too!)

new Antibalas — Who Is This America? ... LP
Ropeadope/Daptone, 2004. New Copy 2LP .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The most outwardly political album to date from Antibalas – and quite possibly the funkiest one too! The set's got the group really grooving hard in their 70s Afro Funk-inspired vein – jamming at a level that would make Fela Kuti blush – working together with a fierce array of percussion, horns, keyboards, and guitars to jam up a groove that stretches back to the best days of the African-styled funk of the classic years. The whole thing's wonderful – every bit as essential for any fan of 70s Fela as it is for the current deep funk underground of which Antibalas are a part – and if you had any fear that their move to a semi-major label would hurt them, rest assured that they sound better than ever! Titles include "Big Man", "Obanla'e", "Elephant", "Sister", "Pay Back Africa", and "Who Is This America Dem Speak Of Today?"
(Finally available on vinyl – thanks to the funk saviors at Daptone!)

new Sabu Martinez — Palo Congo ... LP
Blue Note, 1957. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most unique sessions ever cut for Blue Note – an album of very traditional Afro-Cuban jamming, led by percussionist Sabu Martinez! The music on the album's comprised mostly of percussion – plus some occasional guitar, bass, and vocals shouted by Sabu, and group members that include Arsenio Rodriguez, Ray Romero, and Willie Capo. The whole thing's incredibly haunting – and about as different from the average Blue Note hardbop set as you could get! Titles include "Simba", "Aggo Elgua", "Tribilin Cantore", "Asabache", and "Billumba-Palo Congo".

new Pharaohs — Awakening (with download) ... LP
Scarab/Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $13.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary album from Chicago – recorded by a group with ties to Sun Ra, Phil Cohran, and Earth Wind & Fire! The set's got a sound that more than lives up to all those references – a vibe that's jazzy and soulful, yet often quite righteous too – imbued with the sort of spirit you'd guess from the group's name and the album's cover image – but often served up with a tight enough groove to make the set a favorite for fans of funk as well! There's a really special mix going on here – and unlike other ensembles of the time, The Pharoahs never go too far out – and instead really have the great sort of focus you'd hear even more strongly with Earth Wind & Fire. The lineup features Louis Satterfield on bass, Willie Woods on trombone, Don Myrick on saxes, Black Herman on drums, and Derf Reklaw on percussion and flute – and titles include "Ibo", "Somebody's Been Sleeping", "Damballa", "Freedom Road", "Great House", and "Black Enuff".
(Great new reissue pressing – heavy tip-on cover, and bonus download too!)

new Senor Soul — It's Your Thing ... LP
Double Shot, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
This album's like a funky 45 party! Senor Soul first started out as one of those fake Latin acts in the LA scene – kind of a soul jazz version of the Tijuana Brass – but by the time of this album, they've turned into a hot funky combo, with a really wonderful sound! The groove here is a wonderful blend of piano, vibes, percussion, and some totally great funky flute – with a blown-out sound that reminds us of the way the instrument sounds on later work by groups like SOUL or The Duke Of Burlington. The group groove hard on the album's cuts – a great mix of original funky 45 type numbers, plus a few well-chosen covers that keep the groove hard. Titles include "The Mouse", "It's Your Thing", "Soul Sermon", "Make The Funk Jump", "Hypnotizer", "Soul Fiesta", "El Loco", and "Love Has Two Faces".

new Fanga — Natural Juice ... LP
Cosmic Groove (France), 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
There's plenty of Afro Funk combos working today, but these guys are one of the greatest – a totally hip French ensemble with a really amazing sound! Fanga has a groove that's really a cut above – a way of pulling together all the best elements of the 70s generation of Afro Funk, and sifting them out with a new sense of power – a boldness that grabs you right from the get-go, and which makes the album way more than just a simple copycat of Fela modes! The percussion is especially great – nicely gritty on the bottom, and played with a sharp sense of focus – and the keyboards also stand out too, with a haunting quality that spooks things up nicely and unsettles some of the best tunes. The group also have plenty of space in their egos for outside help from others – and the album features key guest work from Tony Allen and Segun Damisa. Titles include "Crache La Doleur", "Noble Tree", "Natural Juice (Ashanti mix)", "I Didn't Know", "Kononi", "Iba", "Bolli", and "Ni I Matoro".

new Sons & Daughters Of Lite — Let The Sun Shine In ... LP
Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99 Out Of Stock
Beautiful material from this legendary Bay Area soul jazz combo! The Sons & Daughters of Lite have an incredibly spiritual sound – one that sounds sort of like the best groups on the Strata East label, with touches of Roy Ayers or James Mason-esque soulfulness, but with a little less polish. Many of the cuts have sweet female vocals in the lead – with backing that includes vibe, electric piano, tenor, alto, and percussion by Babatunde. The record's a great one if you dig spiritual jazz funk – along the lines of Gary Bartz, The Pharoahs, or Oneness Of Juju – and Luv N Haight have done a stellar job of repackaging the album! Titles include the classic mellow groover "Let The Sun Shine In", plus "Fly Away", "Operation Feed Yourself", "Darkuman Junktion", and "Ju Ju's Door".

new Bombay Royale — You Me Bullets Love (with download) ... LP
Hope Street (Australia), 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
BBombay the Melbourne way – a funk, disco and Bollywood loving collective from the Aussie scene – they're no pretenders, either! The group does a great job with Indian cinema-enamoured, though diverse tapestry of 70s funky soundtrack influences – the lead up 45 was a gem and the full length delivers in full on the promise. The vocalists – Parvyn Kaur Singh (as The Mysterious Lady) and Schourov Bhattacharya (as The Tiger) – really help get it over thematically, but the band is excellent. Horns, funk & psych keys, tabla, sitar mandolin and dilruba at the core – plus some guest violins and percussion. A win from the reliable Hope Street label! Includes "Monkey Fight Snake", "You Me Bullets Love", a funky cover of unlikely advert/pop culture-invading "Jaan Pehechan Ho", "Sote Sote Adhi Raat", "Mahindra Death Ride", "Oh Sajna", "Dacoit's Choice" and "Phone Baje Na".

new Edzayawa — Projection One (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Soundway (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Super-rare Ghanaian funk from Edzayawa – one of the most unique and insistently appealing Afro Rock albums we've heard in years – with a hypnotic groove all its own! The album shares some of the same influences and instrumentation as many other groups from the time, but, there's really nothing else quite like it – a wicked blend of rhythms and sounds that's completely compelling! The percussion and the rhythms pull you right in and hold on tight – with thick layers of organ floating throughout. The vocals are great, too, mixed with some occasional flute – and overall, there's a heavy vibe, but it's not an ominous one – kind of an undercurrent of rock mixed in with the funk – although never totally tripped out. One of the most amazing albums from Soundway in a long time! Includes "Darkness", "Gondzin", "Edzayawa", "Naa Korle", "Amanehun", "Abonsan", "Obuebee" and "Adesa".
Also available: Projection One (LP style sleeve) ... CD $15.99
