VariousWonderful World Of Depressing Country Music – As Dug By Lux & Ivy & Gram ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A collection of classic country that's got way more to offer than the "depressing" in the title might make you think – not tracks that are purposely over the top and full of bad feeling – but instead the kind of well-crafted work that makes postwar country some of the most carefully emotive music of the time! The set's overflowing with themes of love and loss, but handled with a mature, honest, very human approach – never wallowing too much in depression, and instead often coming across with a slightly redemptive spirit in the realization of the loss. The set features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Letter Edged In Black" by Hank Snow, "Teardrops & Empty Arms" by Texas Ruby, "A Church A Courtroom & Then Goodbye" by Patsy Cline, "Lonely Street" by Don Gibson, "Call Of The Wedding" by Goldie Hill, "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight by George Jones, "Tramp On The Street" by Carlisle Brothers, "The Old Crossroad Is Waitin" by Rose Maddox, "Lonely Side Of Town" by Kitty Wells, "Are You Afraid To Die" by Stanley Brothers, and "I'm Reading Yaur Letter Again" by Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper. ✨✧ VariousChristmas On The Countryside – 27 Honky Tonkin Christmas Country Songs ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the coolest country Christmas collections we've ever heard – but then again, we'd expect no less from the folks at Bear Family! There's a lot of great original tunes here – which are mixed with country-fied takes on more popular Holiday songs from the midcentury years – often served up here by singers that were the bigger names of their generation, caught in a very special setting for the month of December! As usual with Bear Family, the presentation is great – vivid images inside and out – and notes on every single track – supporting a selection of 27 titles that include "I'll Be Walking The Floor This Christmas" by Ernest Tubb, "Senor Santa Claus" by Jim Reeves, "Christmas Dinner" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Snowdeer" by Carl Smith, "They Shined Up Rudolph's Nose" by Johnny Horton, "Santa Claus Jr" by Eddi Cletro, "It's Christmas Every Day In Alaska" by Hank Thompson, "It Was Jesus (undubbed)" by Johnny Cash, "Reindeer Boogie" by Hank Snow, "The Christmas Boogie" by Davis Sisters, "I'm Your Private Santa Claus" by Eddie Arnold, "I'm Gonna Tell Santa Claus On You" by Faron Young, "Captain Santa Claus" by Bobby Helms, "Santa's Big Parade" by The Louvin Brothers, and "Christmas In My Hometown" by Sonny James. Bear Family (Germany), 1930s/1940s/1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If you know us at all, you'll know that we really love a well-themed compilation – and we're especially in love with the sort of collection like this – which can bring together all sorts of weird and unusual singles with the united spirit of a holiday theme! This collection is even cooler and groovier than some other Halloween compilations out there – as in addition to the monster rock and horror film trailers that usually show up, there's some surprising contributions from jazz vocalists, mainstream entertainers, and country artists – which make the whole thing an array of surprises all the way through! The notes and song selection are up there with the best from Bear Family – and titles include "Monster Gonzales" by Tommy Bruce & The Bruisers, "Vampira" by Bobby Bare, "Strollin Spooks" by Ken Nordine, "Dragonfly" by Tommy Dee & The Mellotones "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "Creature From Outer Space" by Sonny Day, "Ghost Trains" by Hank Snow, "The Monsters Hop" by Bert Convy, "Dead" by The Poets, "The Boogie Man" by The Cadillacs, "The Ghost Hop" by The Surfmen, "The Headless Horseman" by Kay Starr, and "Spooky" by George Barnes. VariousFunction Underground – The Black & Brown American Rock Sound 1969 to 1974 ... LP
Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.98
The deepest of the deep from the American scene at the start of the 70s – groups so hip they weren't quite soul, weren't quite rock – and instead kind of a funky hybrid of both! After opening our ears to countless underground sounds from around the globe, the Now Again label turn back to some of the territory of its roots – the hinterland of groups who labored mostly in obscurity, but left behind a few funky 45s that have become the stuff of legend – and which show us that there was a much bigger psychedelic funk underground out there besides groups like Funkadelic or the early Ohio Players! As always with the label, the history is really given its due, thanks to very detailed notes – alongside titles that include "Down By The River" by Purple Snow, "There's A Wrinkle In Our Time" by 1984, "Function Underground" by We The People, "Corruption Is The Thng" by Creations Unlimited, "Jimi's Guitar Raps With The Bass" by Jimi Macon, "I'm A Man" by Cisneros & Garza Group, "Just Got To Be Free" by Black Conspirators, "BL Movement" by Blaclites, and "The Siesta Is Over" by The Revolution. ✨✧ Blue MagicMystic Dragons ... LP
Atco, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Blue Magic getting a bit bolder than before – adding in some heavier funk that takes them past the mellow moments of their earliest years – yet still serving up some great harmonies in the process! The change is a subtle one – heard on some of the album's more hard-grooving tracks, which also bring in some full arrangements that echo the trippy feel of the cover – yet which still always respect that slight heartbreaking undercurrent of the group's great vocals, thanks to arrangements from Bobby Eli! Just about every moment from Blue Magic is totally great, and this album is no exception – with titles that include "Freak N Stein", "Mother Funk", "To Get Love", "See The Bedroom", "Summer Snow", "Making Love To A Memory", and "Spark Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear, and an ink stamp.)

✨✧ Wes MontgomeryGroove Brothers ... LP
Fantasy, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A 70s set that brings together some nice sides from Wes and his brothers. Side one is taken from the Montgomery Brothers set, the first session to feature the group with Wes on the west coast – caught in the studio at a time when Buddy and Monk had left The Mastersounds, and recorded here with a sound that's quite similar to that group – but with a bit of a harder edge, thanks to the guitar. Side two continues in the same vein, capturing the group on a live set in Vancouver, grooving in a similar style that's a bit like some of Wes' early small group albums from the same time. The final two sides are pulled from the Groove Yard LP, another lively set that has a lot more swing than usual, and which grooves nicely on just about every cut. The drummers on the sides are Lawrence Marable, Paul Humphries and Bobby Thomas, all fitting nicely into the pocket with the Montgomerys. 15 tracks in all, including "Jeanine", "Green Dolphin Street", "Beaux Arts", "Snowfall", "Lover Man", "June In January", "Monterey Blues", "Delirium", "Back To Back", "Doujie", "Just For Now", and "Groove Yard" LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Chilly GonzalesVery Chilly Christmas ... CD
Fontana, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly straightforward Christmas album from Chilly Gonzales – one that features spare piano on most of the tracks, usually handled with this really moody vibe that really gets the complicated spirit of the holiday right! It's as if Chilly knows that the season can be as sad for some folks as it is happy for others – so he created a special record that opens up more melancholy elements in familiar classics, while mixing things with a few original numbers that really fit the mood. There are a few vocal moments – thanks to Jarvis Cocker and Feist – and titles include "The Bannister Bough", "Jingle Bells", "All I Want For Christmas Is You", "Snow Is Falling In Manhattan", "Come All Ye Faithful", "We Three Kings", "In The Bleak Midwinter", and "Last Christmas". ✨✧ Patti PageChristmas With Patti Page (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, 1965. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Patti Page brings a special sort of warmth to these Holiday tunes – an approach that almost feels more postwar than the mid 60s date of the record – thanks to a seasonal sound that's pretty timeless overall! Patti's singing style is a bit different than on her non-Christmas work for Columbia in the 60s – and although the record throws in the odd kiddie voice for exclamation, Page is pretty much out front in the spotlight on her own – with arrangements from Bob Johnston, Vic Schoen, and Belford Hendricks! Titles include the slightly creepy "Happy Birthday Jesus", plus "Christmas Bells", "Pretty Snow Flakes", "Santo Natale", "Little Drummer Boy", "Silver Bells", and "Rudolph The Red Noised Reindeer". ✨✧ Adam ShulmanWe Wish You A Funky Christmas ... CD
Cellar Live, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A definite funky Christmas from keyboardist Adam Shulman – a player who handles Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and organ here – plus additional keyboards as well! Yet despite the many keys, this isn't some Herbie Hancock-styled set – as the groove is lean, and the record has a small combo vibe that's as if an older organ combo has evolved into the 70s – picking up lots of the best currents of funk and soul that have changed things over the years, and woven them into a really wonderful Holiday mix! Most tunes are remakes, but come up with a very unique vibe – thanks to work from a quartet that also includes alto and EWI from Jesse Levit – on titles that include "Christmas Time Is Here", "We Three Kings", "Let It Snow", "We Wish You A Funky Christmas", "Good King Wence", and "Christmas Is Coming". ✨✧ Third WaveHere & Now – Arranged & Conducted By George Duke ... CD
MPS/Crippled Dick (Germany), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredibly groovy! This rare MPS recording features the totally obscure vocal group The Third Wave – five Philippino sisters from California who were discovered and produced by George Duke. The band has this amazing breathy vocal style – similar to work by 60s groups like the Swingle Singers, Anita Kerr Singers, or Les Double Six – but a lot more hip! The tracks have a wonderfully airy sound, but thanks to backing by the Duke Trio, they also have a great groove. The band was lost for years until they appeared recently on the Snowflakes compilation – and their big fame on that one led to the release of this, their one and only LP. This is the kind of thing we stay in business for, and we're pleased as punch to have this one in! Titles include "Waves Lament", "Niki", "Maiden Voyage", "Stormy", "Chloe", "Don't Ever Go", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Got To Get You Into My Life". Great package, and great remastering too! CD

✨✧ VariousIt's Christmas Once Again ... CD
Atomicat, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's Christmas once again – but thanks to this groovy little set, you'll be celebrating with music that's a nice change from previous years! The package does a great job of pulling together rare 50s cuts in a variety of styles – country, R&B, instrumental, and early rock and roll – a blend that works wonderfully as the set steps from one unusual tune to the next – making for a great change from the Frank Sinatra and Vince Guaraldi albums that usually get big play during the 12th month of the year! The set's got 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Snow Man Rock" by Big Bud, "Frosty The Snowman" by Porter Wagoner, "Who Said There Ain't No Santa Claus" by Ron Holden, "Christmas Dinner" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Joy To The World" by The Louvin Brothers, "Swingin Christmas" by Earl Grant, "We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo" by Big John Greer, "Sleigh Bell Rock" by Chuck Blevins, "Santa's Helper" by Joe Poovey, "Jingle Bells" by Chet Atkins, "I'm Gonna Tell Santa Claus On You" by Faron Young, and "Mister Santa" by Dorothy Collins.
