Cool set that brings together all of the lost funky groove and electro classics by this great New York band. You'll recognize some of these, like "Cavern", in a minute from their samples on classic hip hop records, but just about every track's a winner, and when you hear this stuff, you'll realize how much today's "post rock" crowd is copping from the group. Tracks include "Lock Groove", "Optimo", "Scraper", "Push", "Bell Head", and others – plus a full side of live material! Nice package, too! CD
Nice one! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm committment to funky instrumental backing. Their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves that always seem to get buried amidst all of the tracks with vocals. Now, this excellent collection brings together some of their best tracks in this genre, for an album that's got the sound of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in. The set's a cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel, and a modern committment to the funky break. Every track's a winner, and titles include "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". CD
