new Michel LegrandLe Mans/Le Chasseur (The Hunter) ... CD
Universal (France), 1971/1980. New Copy .... $12.99
Steve McQueen and Michel Legrand – a wonderful combination, represented here in two great soundtracks! First up is Le Mans, from 1971 – a soundtrack that's quite different than most of Legrand's work from the time – in that it's kind of a collage of music, sounds from the film, racing bits, and other material – all fused into a beautiful blend that's still quite musical, and which acts almost as an aural representation of the film itself. Legrand gets out some great melodies that rank with his other work of the time – but they sound different, with racing cars blasting through them! Includes 2 vocal numbers with lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman – "The Shooting Gallery" and "A Face In The Crowd" – plus the tracks "Delaney's Arrival & Memories", "The Race, First Laps", and "The Race, Final Laps". Le Chasseur is also known in English as The Hunter – and it's McQueen's last film ever – scored by Legrand with a brilliance to match his earlier efforts for the actor! There's almost a Thomas Crown feel to the music at points – fast jazzy bits that have that great Legrand sense of humanity – mixed with a few warmer themes that bring a slight touch of sentimentality, but never too much. The music's easily one of Legrand's best soundtracks from this period – one we'd rank right up there with his glory years of the late 60s. Titles include "Ralph Thorson In Action", "Chicago Chase", "Dotty's Pregnancy", "Houston Flight", "The Final Chase", and "Looking For Tommy Price".
