✨✧ John ScofieldBlue Matter ... LP
Gramavision, 1987. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Warmly chromatic work from guitarist John Scofield – full of tones and textures that shift and shimmer about a soulful center – always as chromatic as you might guess from the album's cover and title! There's certain 80s elements in the instrumentation – especially the use of more electric bits, as was common for the Gramavision label at the time – but Scofield finds a way to keep things interesting by drawing on the deeper roots of his previous work for his solos. Titles include "The Nag", "Time Marches On", "Now She's Blonde", "Make Me", and "So You Say". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has bent corners.)

✨✧ Bernie WorrellFunk Of Ages ... CD
Gramavision, 1990. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe not the funk of ages, but a mighty nice solo set from Bernie Worrell – done at a key stretch when he was working away from George Clinton and the P-Funk universe! The set's got Bernie opening up in a blend of jazz and funk – and some tracks feature lead vocals, in a style that takes off from his earlier solo album on Arista, but tuned here with a bit more of that electro vibe that the Gramavision album was doing so well at the time! Bernie handles much of the music himself, but there's plenty of key guests on the record too – rhythms from Sly & Robbie, more keyboards from Herbie Hancock, guitar from Keith Richards and Vernon Reid, and seven some backing vocals from David Byrne and other old associates from the P-Funk years. Titles include "Straight Ahead", "Sing", "Don't Piss Me Off", "Ain't She Sweet", "V Spy", "BW Jam", "Volunteered Slavery/Bern's Blues/Outerspaceways", and "Beware Of Dog". CD
(Out of print. Traycard has a crease.)

✨✧ John ScofieldLoud Jazz ... CD
Gramavision, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
The sound is never too loud here – and John Scofield's right out in the lead on most numbers, carving out those soulfully-inflected, modern-styled licks that really characterized his sound back in the day! Scofield's emerged as more of a traditionalist in recent years, but on 80s dates like these he was really embracing the bigger sounds of the time – and has a way of mixing his guitar roots with kind of a fuzzier, more electric vibe – of the sort that the Gramavision label could do wonderfully at the time. The group is mostly a quintet, with Don Alias on percussion – and keyboards are by Robert Aries on all tracks, but George Duke steps in with some solos as well. Titles include "Signature Of Venus", "Dirty Rice", "Did It", "Loud Jazz", "Otay", "True Love", and "Igetthepicture". CD

✨✧ John ScofieldStill Warm ... CD
Gramavision, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
John Scofield's still plenty warm on the tones of his guitar – even though the record's got some sharp electric action in an 80s fusion mode – thanks to both acoustic drums and beats from Omar Hakim! The lineup has John's guitar dancing nicely with that airy sense of space he first developed in the 70s – a warmly chromatic mode that brings a sense of humanity to the record right from the start – and which gets equally soulful support from Don Gronick on keyboards. Tracks include "Techno", "High & Mighty", "Still Warm", "Rule Of Thumb", and "Protocol". CD

✨✧ Medeski, Martin & WoodFriday Afternoon In The Universe ... LP
Gramavision/Real Gone, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really transformative album from the trio of Medeski Martin & Wood – a set that helped re-open possibilities for jazz organ expression in the 90s, while also bringing back the instrument in some of his best old school modes as well! Around the time of the set, many folks thought of the organ as an instrument in jazz that was a bit dated – not exactly true, and an opinion that was definitely changed once John Medeski was able to open up on the keys on a record like this –using other keyboards too, in the core trio with Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass. There's plenty of other elements in the mix too – and Medeski can soar like Larry Young one minute, groove like Jimmy McGriff the next – on titles that include "Shack", "Tea", "Chinoiserie", "House Mop", "Paper Bass", and "Chubb Sub". ✨✧ Terry RileyCadenza On The Night Plain & Other String Quartets ... LP
Gramavision, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A unique record for Riley, where he collaborates with and writes expressly for the Kronos Quartet, composing several string quartets with his signature minimalist approach incorporating jazz and exotic melodies and large improvised passages. The first album is made up of 3 shorter pieces "Sunrise Of The Planetary Dream Collector", "G Song" and "Mythic Birds Waltz", while "Cadenza On The Night Plain" encompasses both sides of record 2, and goes through quite a few different movements, including "Where Was Wisdom When We Went West?", "March Of The Old Timers Reefer Division", "Tuning To Rolling Thunder", "The Night Cry Of Black Buffalo Woman", "Gathering Of The Spiral Clan" and "Captain Jack Has The Last Word". ✨✧ Medeski, Martin & WoodIt's A Jungle In Here ... LP
Gramavision/Real Gone, 1993. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from a time when few folks were thinking of funk in jazz – the second effort by a trio who came years after the glory days of soul jazz and funky 45s, but who also paved the way for the Daptone generation to come! Chris Wood plays bass, Billy Martin plays drums, and John Medeski plays organ and piano – yet these guys sound nothing like a Hammond trio from back in the day – as they have a soaring, almost cosmic approach to music – really letting loose with lines that sometimes soar, sometimes play in the dirt – effortlessly shifting things up in a really great way! The album includes a great version of Coltrane's "Syeeda's Song Flute", plus originals like "Worms", "Sand", "Where's Sly", and "Wiggly's Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Medeski, Scofield, Martin & WoodOut Louder ... CD
Indirecto, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Medeski, Martin, & Wood trio is augmented by the guitar of John Scofield – and the result is one of their funkiest records in years! There's almost a back-to-basics sort of style going on here – the kinds of grooves the trio first brought to the table during their groundbreaking years on Gramavision – back at a time when nobody was jamming that much, and few modern groups could ever really get a funky sound right. Back at that point, John Scofield was just beginning to get a bit funky too – so in a way, this record's almost like a merger that should have happened a decade ago – but hey, better late than never, especially when it sounds this nice! There's still plenty of left-field sounds and notes in the mix, even when the style is more directly funky – and Scofield's doing plenty here to match the inventive styles on the keyboard from John Medeski. Titles include "In Case The World Changes Its Mind", "Little Walter Rides Again", "Tootie Ma Is A Big Fine Thing", "Hanuman", "Telegraph", "Julia", "What Now", "Down The Tube", and "Legalize It".
