Donald Byrd & Gigi GryceJazz Lab (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Near Mint- .... $5.99
Wonderful work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce! Byrd is at his youthful best here – blowing with a soulful imagination that's surprising, given his young age, and honed to a modern edge by the arrangements of Gryce. Conversely, Gryce's tone on the alto is fantastic – less measured than on other albums, and perhaps given a bit more of a gutsy push by his work here with Byrd. Of course, the rest of the group helps, too – and with Art Taylor on drums, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass, the whole set grooves nicely! Titles include "Little Niles", "Sans Souci", "Nica's Tempo", and "Speculation".

Gigi GryceReminiscin' ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good- .... $11.99
A great lost date from the wonderful Gigi Gryce – a set that features the altoist in an sextet, but often swinging with a looser vibe than on some of his better-known albums from the 50s! There's a mix of soulful and modern here that's not unlike the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – both players of Gryce's same postwar generation, and coincidentally recording for Mercury at the same time. Although the groove here is definitely different – less emphasis on the bottom, and more on the top – not just Gryce's wonderfully raspy alto, but also the trumpet of Richard Williams too. All other players are great as well – and Eddie Costa brings in some sweet vibes – in a lineup that also features Richard Wyands on piano, and either Reggie Workman or George Duvivier on bass, and either Walter Perkins or Bob Thomas on drums. Tracks include "Reminiscing", "Gee Blues Gee", "Blue Light", and "Night In Tunisia".
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear, with underlining in pen on the back.)

new Donald Byrd & Gigi GryceJazz Lab (Jazzland) ... LP
Jazzland, 1957. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a number of recordings headed up by Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce under the Jazz Lab name, and probably the hardest to find. Like the Columbia andJubilee sets, this one's a cooking hard bop side, with inventive solos and nice arranging by Byrd and Gryce, who are joined by Wade Legge on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The tracks include Legge's "Geraldine" and Gryce's "Minority" plus "Love For Sale", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Straight Ahead", and "Wake Up!".
(Orange label Jazzland pressing, with the slightly smaller label and a deep groove. Vinyl is clean, with light marks. Cover has light wear and a bit of seam splitting.)

new Donald Byrd & Gigi GryceModern Jazz Perspective ... LP
Columbia, 1957. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second of two early LPs that the Byrd and Gryce team cut for Columbia – and the more obscure of the two by far! This one features the group's groundbreaking format – a mixture of hardbop and modern jazz, always swinging, but angularly carved, with striking tones and colors that recall the best mid 50s Mingus. The difference, though, is that 4 tracks also feature some vocals by Jackie Paris, a hip singer who's at his best here – vocalizing with way better material than he often got on his own albums, singing on the tracks "Now Don't You Know", "Elgy", "Early Byrd", and "Early Morning Blues". The rest of the group features Wynton Kelly, Art Taylor, and Wendell Marshall – but more than anything else, it's Gryce's unbelievable tone on alto that really makes the record cook. Why couldn't he have played like this forever? We love it to death! Other tracks include "Satellite", "Social Call", and "Steppin Out".
(6 eye pressing with deep groove. Vinyl has a mark that clicks on a few tracks, but is clean overall. Cover has light wear and some light seam splitting.)

Donald Byrd, Charlie Rouse, Al Cohn, & Others — Know Your Jazz ... LP
ABC, 1956. Very Good- .... $11.99
An interesting little session from ABC – recorded as sort of an educational record about jazz, directed by Creed Taylor – but also a session that comes off well in the jam session mode of some of the Savoy sets of the same time! Players are a varied lot – and include Donald Byrd, Oscar Pettiford, Gigi Gryce, Mundell Lowe, Tony Scott, Billy Taylor, and Kenny Clarke – all working together in a set of tunes that showcases a different mode of jazz with each track, and which features a different soloist stepping out to take the lead with each new number. Titles include "In A Mellow Tone", "If I Love Again", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Laura", "But Not For Me", "How About You", and "Stella By Starlight".
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear, with some light staining along the edges.)

Duke Jordan — Trio & Quintet ... LP
Savoy, 1955. Near Mint- .... $19.99
Duke Jordan never made many albums as a leader back in the 50s – but all of them are great, including this classic set on Savoy! As you'd guess from the title, the record features Jordan in two different settings – trio and quintet – the former of which features Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums, working in warmly soulful formation with Duke on the first half of the record. The second half brings in Cecil Payne on baritone and Eddie Bert on trombone – a whole new approach to the music, and one that really shows the depth of Jordan's under-documented arranging skills – which here are almost in the territory of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson. Titles include "Flight To Jordan", "Cu-ba", "Two Loves", "Scotch Blues", "Sultry Eve", "Night In Tunisia", "Summertime", and "Forecast".
(Japanese pressing, with obi and insert.)

Thelonious Monk/Herbie Nichols — Thelonious Monk & Herbie Nichols ... LP
Savoy, 1952/1955. Very Good+ .... $19.99
The pair of great pianists don't play together – but are featured on a side apiece of the record, pulled from their Savoy recordings of the 50s. The album's most notable for the work of Nichols – some of the few sides he ever cut, and along with his two Blue Note LPs, and one for Bethlehem, a key to understanding his rare and short-lived talent for modern improvisation. The Nichols sides feature Chocolate Williams on bass, plus a bit of vocals, Shadow Wilson on drums, and (possibly) Danny Barker on guitar. Titles by Herbie include "Who's Blues", "Nichols & Dimes", "My Lady Gingersnap", and "Good Story Blues". The Monk sides are cut with the Gigi Gryce Quartet – and include "Shuffle Boil", "Brake's Sake", and "Nica's Tempo".
(70s pressing – with 2 alternate takes. Cover has a cut corner and some wear.)

Oscar Pettiford — Oscar Pettiford Orchestra In Hi Fi Volume 2 ... LP
ABC, 1956. Very Good .... $19.99
Pettiford's second album of big band tracks for ABC during the 50s – a more open-ended set than the previous one, with modernist touches that really make the set sparkle nicely. Part of these are due to Gigi Gryce, who plays alto on the record, and probably had a bit of a hand in arrangements. Other players include Art Farmer, Jerome Richardson, and Al Grey – and tracks include "I Remember Clifford", "Little Niles", "Now See How You Are", and "Seabreeze".
(Vinyl has some light surface marks, but is clean and plays well overall. Cover is nice.)

new Gil Evans & Tadd Dameron — Arrangers' Touch ... LP
Prestige, Mid 50s. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mid 70's 2LP set that combines fantastic early work from Gil Evans and Tadd Dameron. The Gil Evans tracks are shorter and less ambitious than some of Evans' work on Impulse, but the group is excellent – and even in a shorter format, the conception of the work still contains plenty of rich new ideas. Players include Louis Mucci, John Carisi, Steve Lacy, Willie Ruff, Paul Chambers, Nick Stabulis, and Lee Konitz on alto. Titles include "Ella Speed", "Big Stuff", "Jambangle", "Nobody's Heart", and "Remember". Tadd Dameron's contributions here are from a wonderful modernist session – and one that's especially great because it's filled with fresh themes that get past some of his over-reissued standards! Players here include Clifford Brown and Idrees Sulieman on trumpets, Gigi Gryce on alto, Benny Golson on tenor, and Dameron on piano. Titles include "Philly JJ", "Choose Now", "Theme Of No Repeat", and "Dial B For Beauty". Also included are readings of classic Dameron compositions – like "The Scene Is Clean", "Fontainebleau", and "Delerium" – all played by a great little group that includes Dameron on piano, plus Joe Alexander on tenor, Sahib Shihab on alto, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, and Henry Coker on trombone.
(Cover has some wear.)

new Art Farmer — Farmer's Market (2LP reissue) ... LP
Prestige, Late 50s. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the nice Prestige 2-fer's issued in the 70s collecting great hard bop sides by Art Farmer. While we really dig Art's contemplative playing on the Untied Artists and Argo sides, he's displaying a more fire-y approach on these sessions, recording alongside a number of other greats playing at the top of their form, including Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Gigi Gryce, Kenny Drew, Wynton Kelly, and others. 17 tracks in all, recorded between July 1953 and November 1956: 'Soft Shoe:, "Confab In Tempo", "I'll Take Romance", "Wisteria", "Work Of Art", "Mau Mau", "Wildwood", "Evening In Paris", 'Elephant Walk", "A Night At Tony's", "Blue Concept", "Evening In Casablanca", "Forecast", "I've Never Been In Love Before", "Alone Together", "With Prestige" and "Farmer's Market".
(Cover has light wear, small splits on the top seams, and some pen inside the gatefold.)

new Art Farmer — When Farmer Met Gryce ... LP
Prestige, 1955. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Art Farmer's pivotal mid 50s sides – recorded in the company of altoist Gigi Gryce, a great player and a budding young arranger who helped Farmer really formulate the best side of his sound! The tracks are lyrically modern – but still have a nice dose of soul in them – a wonderful blend that really sets the stage for the move that Art was making away from earlier trumpeters in jazz – into that hip territory that was neither too cool, nor too overblown – and which would almost be known as "Farmer-like" in years to come! The album features Gryce and Farmer in 2 different groups – one with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – the other with Freddie Redd on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Titles include "Social Call", "Capri", "Deltitnu", "Stupendous Lee", and "Blue Concept".
(Yellow & black label pressing, with 50th street address and deep groove! Cover is very nice shape – but vinyl is pretty bad – clean, but with some marks and stained spots that cause noise at points. Worth it for cover, though!)

new Earl Coleman — Earl Coleman Returns ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Possibly the strongest album ever recorded by mellow-voiced jazz vocalist Earl Coleman – a singer with a deeper style that's very much in the classic Billy Eckstine mode, but which swings a bit more freely in a small combo! The set's got a nicely open style – with longer tracks than usual for a jazz vocal date, and lots of room for jazz soloists that include Art Farmer on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, and Hank Jones on piano. The backing is in a great small group mode, and in a way, the album's almost unique for the time – and really predates a lot of later male vocal sides of this nature – offering Coleman more of a fresh start than just a standard "return" – and really paving the way for Johnny Hartman sides in the 60s. Titles include "Say It Isn't So", "Reminiscing", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "No Love No Nothin", and a great version of "Social Call".
(OJC pressing.)
